  1. So guess what? After three weeks on the same pound the scale finally started to move again!! For me I think the trick was eliminating carbs to shock my system and drinking a lot. I also added a probiotic and stool softeners to get my digestive system back in order. Hoping I could ride this wave for a while now! Good luck to all of you!

    Pre-Op Liquid Diet Woes

    I had a 2-week liquid only diet, consisting of 4 Premier shakes, unlimited broth, sugar-free popsicles, caffeine-free sugar and tea. So, as you can see, surgeons differ radically in what they permit you to eat. 300 calories/day seems excessively low to me, though - you may want to confirm/clarify this with your surgical team.

    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

    Hi everyone, I’m in my 3rd week post op and very hormonal due a period and for the first time I’m experiencing real hunger, help! Has anyone else experienced the usual hormonal hunger that you had before op? I’ve lost 14lbs in total but not lost anything for 4 days. I’m on soft foods a week earlier as soups were going straight through me. I don’t know how to control this hunger when I can’t eat.

    Pre-Op Liquid Diet Woes

    I am one week into the liquid diet. My dr. allows: protein shakes, greek yougurt (sugar free, fat free), soup (chicken, non-starchy vegetables), but the soup has to be liquified (no solids / chunks).. sugar free popsicles, pudding / jello. Natural apple sauce and vegetable juice. I am doing between 600-800 cals/day. You should definitely talk to your medical team and ask them what else you can eat.

    Three month stall

    Stalls are fun. NOT! The shocking with extra calories seems to work for me. If I hit a couple of weeks with no real loss, if I splurge on something, I drop like 5 the next week. I think it has something to do with Leptin levels, but I'm not a medical pro or a nutritionist so take that for what it's worth.

    Pre-Op Liquid Diet Woes

    I had a two week liquid diet without a lean meal so I feel you!! I tracked mine in my fit pal because I was supposed to get 750-900 calories a day and I wasn't even clearing 500 with 3 shakes a day plus soup. After talking to my nutritionist, I started making my own shakes in the morning with unsweetened vanilla almond milk. Somedays it was almond milk, chocolate protein powder and PB2 powder. Other days it was almond milk, vanilla protein powder and frozen fruit. The almond milk really helped to bulk it up with some extra calories and it was super helpful. Some of this you DO just have to tough out. Your body is going WTF! Where's my goodies?!!! But you are stronger than that. If you do "mess up" just shake it off and move on. Don't fall into a guilt spiral. I'm really bad about that and then one little slip becomes the whole house on fire. You can do this!

    Pre-Op Liquid Diet Woes

    I had a one week liquid diet before surgery where I could only have shakes/broth/water and I feel your pain ☹️ I would definitely contact your medical team to see if there’s anything you can have that will help. I was quite dizzy and out of it too by the end of it, and someone told me to just have some salt (what I did was lick my hand and sprinkle some like doing a tequila shot) and that did help the nausea and feeling like I was going to pass out any minute. But I really don’t know if that would be okay for you to try as some people need to be careful with salt! Take good care of yourself, drink plenty of water and rest! 🤗
  10. Hi everyone! I am having surgery in exactly one week from today (Nov. 2) and I couldn't be more excited. However, I am one week in on my pre-op liquid diet and I am crashing... bad. I can't even stomach food anymore. I get approx. 300 calories a day from protein shakes, and even that leaves me nauseous. I feel super dizzy and exhausted all the time. I am so sick of broth and shakes! Any advice on new "liquid" foods to try? Or even how to manage this stage? So far I've had: broth, protein shakes/powder, skim milk, sugar-free jello, and baby food once (🤢). I know I will probably have to just tough it out, but it can't hurt to try to get some new meal ideas, right? 🤷‍♀️ I am going through this process completely alone, so if anyone is currently dealing with the same issues right now, I would love to hear about your experiences!

    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

    I was sleeved on October 13! I am 36/F living in Ohio. I have 2 kids, a soon to be 11 year old girl and a 4 year old boy. My high weight was when I was pregnant with my son, over 300 lbs. Starting weight was 288, got down to 271 before 2 week liquid diet, then got down to 253 day of surgery. I am almost 2 weeks post op and am down to 238.

    Bariatric surgery and keto?

    the first few weeks/months you should follow your clinic's food plan. I do know people who've done keto once they're a few months out, though (or in maintenance - if they're dealing with a few lbs of regain).

    Bariatric surgery and keto?

    Always a good idea to get feedback from others. I was put on keto for the 2.5 weeks before surgery but that was all I did. Some will likely swear by it but personally I wouldn’t go back to it. Good to kick start a diet but not long term. Your surgery is the best kickstart you’ll ever find. The high fat intake on keto is the real issue for me. I’ve never enjoyed high fat foods & now I don’t have a gall bladder to help process all that fat. You may find your cholesterol temporarily increases while you are losing (it’s released from your fat). I believe it’s one of the reasons most surgeons & dieticians recommend low fat while you’re losing so you’re not adding to the risk. Losing large amounts of weight & high cholesterol levels also put you had a higher risk of developing gall stones. It’s why many of us end up having issues & have our galls removed post weight loss surgery. I’ve read keto can also screw with your blood sugar levels so if you have issues with diabetes it may not be your best option. Usually best to stick to your surgeon’s plan & dietician’s recommendations while you are losing. Slowing adding in new foods as you go. You’ll lose doing that & you will go into ketosis as well - bad breath & a smelly body awaits you 😉. You may find you end up developing your own eating plan which works for you & which incorporates aspects of many eating styles once you’re close to or in maintenance: keto, vegan, vegetarian, Atkins, intermittent fasting, etc. Whatever way you go it has to be sustainable & complement how to want to live your life. Good luck whatever you choose to do.
  15. I use my weight at the start of the 2-week pre-op diet. That was my highest weight ever and an even 200.0 lbs. Makes the calculations easy! 😉

    What do you consider "Starting Weight"?

    I use both. My weight at my GP when I asked for my referral to the surgeon (91kg) cause it was my weight when I officially started the process. I sometimes refer to my weight on the day of surgery (85.8kg 6 weeks later) because that was what I was right before I started benefitting from the surgery.

    How long for hospital weight to drop off?

    My doctor (my primary) told me to take my blood pressure/water pill combo the day after surgery and I peed like a freaking racehorse. I was under surgery weight by day 3. Now, six weeks out, I'm done with the first stall (it was more like a slowdown) and am losing relatively steadily at around 3 lbs/week, which is elating.
  19. I'm 4 months post-op sleeve and I have had several stalls. One thing that helps me is not seeing the scale go UP! I stay at the same weight for a couple of weeks and then I might lose a pound. I totally celebrate that pound and I say, even out loud: "I'll take it!" Reason: I got to this point in my life because I did stupid fad diets and wrecked my metabolism and my body. This is my last chance to get this right. I figure it will take me a year to get to 50 lb weight lost and then another 6 months to a year to get to my goal. But, I WILL GET THERE in the end! [emoji23]

    How long for hospital weight to drop off?

    I opted not to weight for a full week post-op. Surgery was on a Tuesday, I stepped on the scale for the first time the following Tuesday. Everyone will shake off the IV fluids at their own pace, so no point weighing sooner than is realistic. Staying on top of your fluids, walking as much as you can, and getting adequate sleep will all help healing tremendously. Congrats! You're going to do great!

    Get back on track

    Get back to basics. Focus on getting in your fluids. Weigh and track everything you eat. Eat your protein first and aim to hit your protein goal every day. Get back to moving your body for at least 30 minutes a day. If you are struggling with those, or after a few weeks don't see improvement, reach out to your surgery center. Getting back to basics can be hard, but small steps add up, you can do it!

    What Was Your Biggest Challenge

    I am going for work. I live near Boston. I'll be staying near Eaton Centre, near where I'm working. I love all the Asian restaurants there, but I haven't figured out what I'll eat now that I've had surgery. Last time I was there was about a week before my pre-op diet and I ate EVERYTHING!
  23. I use the weight I was when I decided to pursue WLS because that's when I started my weight loss journey. My highest recorded weight was actually in 2017, but I didn't start my weight loss journey until 2019 so I use the weight I was in 2019 rather than 2017 (i.e I use 389 instead of 392) because I had too much stuff going on in 2017 and wasn't focusing on weight loss at all (I had brain surgery in 2017 and my sister also had a really traumatic miscarriage when she was at 19 weeks).

    What do you consider "Starting Weight"?

    Since my surgeon's clinic doesn't use the two-week liver shrinking diet, giving patients a narrow range of weight loss in a specific time period instead, I count my starting weight as my first visit to their office.

    Get back on track

    How do I get back on track? I was able to get down to 170 with my goal 160. The last month I’ve ate whatever and went from 5 times to 2 times a week at the gym. Which has resulted in 5lbs regain in a month. I can’t go back to old habits but it’s hard to get back on track .
