Artificial sweetners?!?
BLERDgirl replied to twinmomC's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You don't have to eat the jello or any of the artificial food subs. It's more challenging but you can do it. I don't eat jello. I am allergic to several things and vegetarian. Besides the fact that I dislike jello, the artificial food coloring is also an allergy trigger for me. However, you have to have a frank discussion with the nutritionist about alternatives. Post op I was give ProSource no carb, I was also allowed tea and veg broth. I also used Isopure unflavored whey Protein powder and added that to veg broth and greek yogurt. One of the few flavored protein powders I could tolerate was CVS brand whey protein. It comes in vanilla, chocolate canisters and also Cookies n' creme and strawberry packets. Additonally I drank Kefir (a yogurt drink). It was 2 long weeks but I made it. Thankfully I didn't have a pre-op diet. -
Post Op - (6 months +) what is your calorie intake
Rebecca Jo Ragon replied to cadladykim's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have been wondering the same thing and have the same response from my drs. office. They want me to focus on getting in the Protein and Water and nutritious food and not worry about the calories. However, I have had a day here and there where I was at 1300+. I have had several at the 1100 range. I went on a website and put in my age, height and activity level. It gave me the calories needed to maintain weight, lose weight (1-2 lbs/day) and to lose weight rapidly (2+ lbs/wk). I can't find that website right now or I would put the link here. However, it gave me a good target to shoot for. I think the further out we are and the more we can tolerate, it becomes increasingly important to make smart food choices. There are many choices that I have that are good for me. Some are higher in calories. If I choose a lot of cheese and nut Snacks, I might choose to end my day with an 80 calorie greek yogurt rather than Peanut Butter. I hope this makes sense. I am 5' 4" and feel I need to stay below 1300 to continue to lose 2 lbs a week with a light activity level. I am not exercising as much as some. I had a complicated sinus surgery procedure a couple weeks ago and my dr. does not want me straining, lifting, breathing heavy (as with cardio), etc. for a couple more weeks. -
One week post-op HOW ARE WE DOING?
wascott replied to PChayy05's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was sleeved on Monday. I'm doing awesome! All of my pain is gone and I can drink liquids with no problems. I'll exceed 100 ounces today. I go slower when I drink protein shakes. Maybe 30 minutes for an 11 ounce shake. My problem is that I want some real food. I'm allowed drinkable yogurt and protein shakes now. -
Stage 2 diet / full liquids & pureed food
lauraellen80 replied to edithf71's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved on 6/15 as well. I'm on full liquids at this point and am doing well on strained broccoli-cheese soup, a Campbell's roasted poblano queso soup (chiles strained out!), and Imagine brand creamy potato leek soup. Sugar free pudding is good, but jello is not, and I tried Greek yogurt the other day and felt weird and gurgly with it. I've been making my protein shakes with light soy milk (started with almond milk but got really tired of the taste after a few days). -
Stage 2 diet / full liquids & pureed food
BizzyB replied to edithf71's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am in soft food now, been struggling a bit with it. Not really because of my sleeve, but more of my own fear. I've been having various soups, greek yogurt, SF applesauce... I tried oatmeal, that went poorly. I ended up in bed with some crazy nausea with that. I tried a baked potato last night and that went fine. Scrambled eggs have also been successful. Next week I hope to move on to some egg salad and chicken salad if I can increase my bravery levels I was sleeved on 6/10/15. -
Glad to hear that WL Warrior! I have started eating greek yogurt, applesauce, soups and had some scrambled eggs so far along with my shakes. I am happy at that right now. I tried oatmeal the other day... I ended up bed with nausea the rest of the day. Ugh.

My surgery was on the 17th. I am feeling pretty good. I am taking just the Prilosec and gas strips occasionally, but I am not having any real issues with that anymore. I was Clear Liquids days 1-4, and now on full liquids until 2 weeks post op. I have been doing zero Vitamin Water, tomato basil Soup, squash soup, mushroom soup, greek yogurt, and Protein shakes. I add unjury chicken soup flavored protein to my Soups, a little milk or almond milk and blend. I also blend Jay Rob vanilla egg white protein into my greek yogurt. Because I've been adding Protein powder into anything I can, I am able to get about 50-60 grams of protein per day. The hardest thing for me is trying to drink enough fluids. I am doing ok, but I get full just on water. Drinking water feels the same to me as having soup or yogurt. What about you ?
-
I started pureed on Monday. Some days are hard to get all fluid in. I try 3 protein shakes (1 with almond milk and 2 with water). I ordered the sample pack from Syntrax. 15 samples of Nectar for $15. I also try to drink 8 oz of V8 and a 12oz bottle of Powerade Zero or Vitamin Water Zero. Thats 5 of my 8 servings of fluids. So that leaves 3 more for water. For food I usually try cereal in morning. My favorite is graham cracker and milk. Also tried oatmeal which was ok. I try to get either fruit or veg at lunch and a protein for supper. Each of these is usually 3 oz. Then in the evening I have yogurt, pudding, or a sugar free fudgecicle. Thats about all I can manage so far. I did buy ingredients for the cheese bake to try and also roast beef hash. Went back to work today and I was really tired after only a 4 hour shift.

Call your nutritionist. I was allowed yogurt on full liquids which would be the same consistency.

First bad food experience :( - Guess it's too early for tuna
Daisee68 replied to Daisee68's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have been eating Fat Free Refried Beans with a little bit of unflavored Greek yogurt and shredded cheese. That has been my favorite so far. Also, the Ricotta Bake from theworldaccordingtoeggface website. It is wonderful! I had scrambled eggs this morning and they stayed down fine but didn't taste good without salsa I usually put on them (and wasn't sure if it was too early for spicy). I have also had sugar free/fat free pudding cup mixed with unflavored protein powder. Still drinking my shakes too to get in enough protein Still experimenting. -
How to stop losing weight without gaining it back
VSGAnn2014 replied to Rogofulm's topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
OK, this is ridiculous. I can do this. This afternoon I went to the grocery store and bought for the cupboard / refrigerator: Nuts (almonds) - offers some Protein and a lot more fat Ground round and black Beans - for delish, high-protein beef chili Greek yogurt - I can surely eat more than one a day 2% milk (instead of skim) for morning skinny lattes Two small Hagen Dazs chocolate ice cream containers (270 calories each). Hey, desperate times call for desperate measures. For lunch today, I had a sweet onion chicken 6" sandwich on half of the flat bread and a whole bag of Sun chips (220 calories). Yeah, chips for lunch -- haven't done that in a while. For dinner tonight (meeting my niece at Ruby Tuesday), I'll have a 5 ounce glass of chardonnay and the Thai Phoon shrimp appetizer -- all of it! I'll total out at 1,771 calories and 90 grams of protein for the day. And we'll just see what the damn scale says tomorrow morning. -
I think I would compare the nutrition labels and see which is better for you. Personally, I'm looking at sugar right now. Some of those yogurts are crazy high.

I am not certain, but I believe that the flips have a reduced Protein amount. I disagree with CatLu86 regarding yogurt. There are many beneficial digestive enzymes in it. It is also high in protein. That being said, you do need to watch your dairy intake. I suspect that it contributed to my awful constipation issues. It is interesting to me that your caloric goal is 500 - 600 calories a day when you are (according to your signature column) more than 6 months out. Is this your goal for calories, or your nutritionist's? My surgery was 2/10/15, and my NUT has encouraged me to eat between 800 - 1000. You may be getting too few calories.

I personally do not count calories or fat. Just carbs and sugar. My goal is always 0 carbs a day but i probably eat about 10-20 a day. Yogurt has so many carbs and sugar, even light ones, to me it is not worth the carbs. My suggestion is Cottage cheese, full fat has less carbs and sugar. If you wanna make it sweet add a little bit of Cool whip, again, don't get the fat free or light, they add sugar to it, regular is your best bet. and if you want to add a flavor, sprinkle a little bit of sugar free Jello powder on it. I use to be a huge yogurt fan, but haven't touched it since the surgery, the nutritional value just seems off to me. Oh and of course add a little flavorless Protein powder to anything to boost your protein, it goes well with my cottage cheese concoction, i don't put a ton, just a bit, a few extra grams of protein is always good! This is all just my opinion and what i have done since my surgery, hopefully it helps?

Can sipping too much/taking pills stretch your sleeve?
NikkiDoc replied to xxjosettexx's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You are supposed to sip, sip, sip and sip some more on that Water. I drink a minimum of 64 oz a day but generally more like 80-90 oz a day, sipping all the way. Sipping liquids will be your new normal. No guzzling. My surgeon had me swallowing pills day 3 after the surgery. His guideline was smaller than an M&M. If they are bigger than that I need to break them to smaller pieces. He prescribed Actigall which comes as a capsule and we wants me to take it with dairy like cottage cheese or yogurt and to swallow with warm water. The dairy keeps it in the stomach longer so it can dissolve and the warm water softens the capsule so it will dissolve quicker. Since the surgeon prescribed it I doubt it will stretch it. Disclaimer: Before breaking, dissolving or crushing any pills please check with your pharmacist. Some pills that are enteric coated or extended release should only be taken whole. Since you are newly sleeved you probably still have a lot of stomach swelling and that is why you can feel the pills. It is my understanding the portion of the stomach left after VSG is very hard to stretch. You should be fine with both the pills and sipping liquids. Keep on sipping. -
How many calories are you getting?
maggie409 replied to Sara51692's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My first week postop I was getting between 350-450 calories per day on clear liquids. I added smooth liquids on Tuesday which included puréed creamed soups, drinkable yogurt, ect. I have gotten between 600-800 calories a day by adding those. I intentionally chose some of the higher calorie soups because I felt I needed the extra calories. Such as a bean and bacon cream soup and New England clam chowder. I am also adding a tablespoon of unflavored protein powder to my 1 cup serving to that extra little 5 gr of protein. -

Protein Bars not feeling so good

I also love the Triple 0 Oikos yogurt ... They are heaven ! -
I understand following the plan, but sometimes the plan doesn't follow you. I will call my surgeon tomorrow and ask him what he thinks. Meanwhile I'm having my protein shakes and a little yogurt. I'm happy now
-
I am so happy! I am officially a week out of surgery now and never could have imagined that I would be here today, sleeved and recovering. I am still sore but feeling pretty good. However, I am having a hard time getting all my Protein in because I am SO SICK of the Protein shakes. I am having no pain drinking and can drink just fine, so I was thinking I could try some cottage cheese or yogurt or something. I see the doctor Monday, but dont think I will last that long on protein shakes, I gag just thinking of them. I called my nurse and she said that I should be able to move to the third stage soon because I am healing so fast. What do you guys think? Do you think I can eat a little protein so I at least get some or wait until Monday and not get enough protein from the shakes? Help!!!!

Protein Bars not feeling so good
jjwhitman replied to TRexMom6525's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I LOVE the Marigold protein bars @ marigoldbars.com I can only eat 1/2 a one because I will dump, but one bar has less sugar than 3 cherries, and as much protein as 4 eggs. Made with very healthy ingredients. I ordered the sampler box and found many I'd like to order again. I've also enjoyed snacking on beef jerky in moderation (too much salt), and love the new Triple Zero Greek Yogurts. They have like 15 grams protein per 1/2 cup. No sugar, no fat, no artificial flavor, but very good.
