My doc's office recommended 60 grams per day. I actually have better weight loss if I get around 80 per day. 2 shakes a day give me approx. 50 grams, so it's pretty easy to get.

I'm New & Few Quick Questions
BigChrisATX replied to MsVeDub's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have UHC as well. My surgeons office did all the communicating with them. Weight loss surgery was an approved benefit through my employer, and since my BMI was higher than their thresh hold I was approved quickly. However, I did need to do the 6 month physician supervied diet and the psych consult before hand. What I would do is look at the benefits UHC provides through your employer. If you see weight loss surgery as a benefit and you are above their BMI thresh hold you should be approved. If you don't see that benefit, it will be more difficult to get approved. -
2010 Lapband Removed, 7/11/12 Rny Completed...

Glad you're doing well. I am in that situation right now.. dstollery said it all. Your info is very informative and I need to hear that right now. My band has stopped working. Wheather I contributed to that or not (I don't know) but my Dr.said that it is no longer working for me. I've had my issues with it and no weight loss in 2 yrs I still have the co-mobilities I had before banding and My insurance will pay for the bypass, but BOY Oh BOY am I afraid. As you said I've done every diet too! over and over w/o success. Oh well, as soon as I can get the band taken out I'm almost sure of regaining some weight back. At that point I would give the bypass a serious thought. I hate to sound so negative about regaining, but thats one of my biggest fears. Because of my diabetes, for me I don't lose w/o help. It's been proven in the past. -
Is Lap Band a Cake Walk To Losing Weight?
BandedInBama replied to NewMeDebbie's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I say modified just because I had never even heard of the "5 Day Pouch Test". I was studying for finals-- stress makes my reflux worse-- I chose to start a liquid diet just so I could focus on studying and not barfing. I did nothing but liquids (mostly cream based soups because they were comforting to me-- and this wasn't a weight loss attempt, I was just trying to make it through finals) for 4 full days and then slowly added back in mushies and then regular protein. I found out about the Trademarked 5 Day Pouch test after the fact when I was researching my band and if it was possible that it could truly be helping me even though it's completely empty at the moment. -

Is Lap Band a Cake Walk To Losing Weight?
B-52 replied to NewMeDebbie's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Have to say, speaking for myself...the first 4-6 months were "Hell"..pure frustration, thought I made a big mistake.... Then after my last fill, things got better, although very confusing with many stuck episodes.... Eventually, say after 1 year to be sure, a little earlier perhaps, I figured it all out...found what worked for me, found what rules I had to adhere to to make it work, and began to make all the changes second nature.... The weight just started to come off consistently, and it was, and still is the easiest thing I could have ever done...it still is. So the first few months were very hard, after that it became a "Cake walk" as you say, easy as can be......I felt sorry for all those around me always talking about having to loose a few pounds.... Most of the posts I read here from people struggling, IMO, and I stress it is only my opinion, (have no way of ever knowing what people are really experiencing) it sounds like they are trying to find that "Groove" As far a the 5 day pouch test...I do my own mini-version of it every 6 weeks or so, but not for the reason(s) many here feel it is for. And my Dr. thinks it is a great idea for maintenance. (if there is such a thing with surgery) -
Is Lap Band a Cake Walk To Losing Weight?
NewMeDebbie replied to NewMeDebbie's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Thanks guys!! I have no intention of giving up and I must admit maybe it's not as bad as I make out. I do follow the rules most of the time. Exercise is a real problem right now because I live outside Vegas and the temp as been in the 100s so it's just too hot!! The walking in the pool is a great idea!! I will use that! But otherwise, I was walking 3 miles 5 days a week and will return to that as soon as the weather cools back off. That will help with my feelings of not doing enough. I have to remind myself that I have lost weight and I am much healthier than I was 10 months ago. I do make better choices and eat smaller portions so it has been a good decision. I just need to learn patience and figure out why I can't stop snacking... There has to be an answer! It must be in my head - I just have to figure it out! Once my husband is better from his surgery next week, we are both going to start eating better. If i get him on board to healthier eating, it may make it much easier for me. Having you all is really helpful!! It's great to know others are going thru the same things, or have in the past and have suggestions on ways to deal with these issues. -
Liquid Diet Prior To Surgery
frazzledmomof2 replied to frazzledmomof2's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So you have had around 6 drinks a day plus snacks if needed? How big are these drinks? Have you had your procedure? Did you lose alot of weight on liquid diet? -
Wear compression garments. The ones they give to people who gave plastic surgery or spanx all of the time(even while working out) it helps with gravity while in motion. Loose skin's worst enemy: gravity. Take a collagen supplement/vitamin c. They aid in New collagen growth. Aldo helps with skin and nails. Dry brushing also exfoliates skin, which promotes renewal as well. Use sulfate free body wash and find a moisturizing cream lotion, such as Nivea firming. Exfoliation is essential. Also take omega 3/6/9 like flaxseed oil with borage. It's good fat. Helps aid in maintaining lean muscle mass as does protein. Lift weights to build lean muscle mass. And hear me out. As you get closer to goal, if you have loose skin that you can squeeze in your hands, it's not loose skin. It's stubborn fat. You literally have to starve(go into ketosis) in order to lose that fat. Most suggest the master cleanse or lemonade detox to do the trick. I'm not a doctor, so do you're own research. You have to do a liver cleanse as well to help the liver function properly. This will rev up your metabolic engine and help lose stubborn/adipose belly fat. I just recently learned this in my quest to prevent loose skin. Mark Sisson talks about the paleo diet. Google him and loose skin. It's an interesting read. Also, Go to Www.terrygivens.com. His a friend, he's in amazing shape and he reinforces a lot of what I'm saying.

Hey everyone so I'm new to the vsg world. And I have been having trouble loosing weight. I have PCOS. So this makes it extra hard. I was looking in the keto diet. Has anyone tried it. And how successful are you or have you been. kira marrie ♡

I was banded May 15th as well. I also use MFP and I'm just now making it to 700 cals a day. You are doing great in my opinion and if you're eating 800 cals and are losing weight, then I'd say that's evidence enough. Do what works for you

Hi there, Sorry to hear you have a bump in the road but congrats on your plastics! It sounds like you did very well on the program to begin with. I would suggest getting back to what got you to lose the weight in the first place. It will be important to get back on track. There is a 5 day pouch test that I would recommend trying. You can google it and it will help you get back on track. Good luck and keep us posted!

New but not new
Arabesque replied to aprilmarie817's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Congratulations on your weight loss & maintenance. To lose more, go back to the basics of what you were eating & doing when you first stabilised. Your old protein & fluids goals, watch portion size, keep your carbs, fats & sugars low & track your food. You’ll then need to reduce your calorie intake to lose weight. (Remember, exercise only accounts for about 10% of your weight loss so upping your activity to help your weight loss will only help with the loss of about 2 lbs in your case.) Given that you’ve been stable all this time, the weight you’re at may be your body’s set point - the weight it is happiest at & functions best at. It’s easer to maintain this weight & much harder to lose more & then maintain a lower weight simply because your body doesn’t want to be at a lower weight. To maintain weight lower than your set point will require you to always work at it & to eat fewer calories than you do now to maintain. Will this be sustainable & manageable? Will a lower weight & reduced calorie intake limit or restrict your lifestyle? Just something to consider. -

It is very normal to be hungry before your first fill. I just tried to make really good choices about what i ate and i exercised a lot. I still lost weight. It will be better when you get one or two fills. Donna -
I was told by my psych doc that most ins. will cover part of the consult but not all, meaning they will cover the consult itself but not the report that the psych has to type up to be submitted by your bariatric surgeon to ins. He said the key to getting them to cover the small part of the consult is when you call for precert you HAVE TO SAY that you need a consult for "weight related issues" ie. depression, not a consult in preparation for bariatric surgery. He told me that this would get the precert but I would have to pay out of pocket for the report, which was $150 plus my copay for the small part that they would bill ins for. so I basically would just be paying for the whole thing anyways. Hope this helps, you know it is all in how you word it with ins.

A couple of pre-op questions......help please
Grayorm replied to Grayorm's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am surprised to be honest about the fact that people are saying that so much effort has to be put in after the band is fitted. However, I am soooo glad that I joined this forum and found this out, because absoloutly no-one has said this to me. They have told me that the band represents 70% of whats required to lose the weight, and that is about it. I am now prepared. Had I gone into this and not had the info that I have read here I would have been disspointed, de-motivated and struggling. Thanks to all. -

I also have a 14 cc band, surgery feb 09. I think I have about 8cc in there and I am down 110 pounds. I am too brain damaged to move my chain( I will have to ask my teenager). My weight loss is slow but steady. Peg:smile: -
i was on 600 calories a day for 10 weeks pre-op and i never went anywhere near starvation mode .. if u arent hungry on 800 or so calories then thats fine too.. everyone is different some count calories as that is how we monitor our food, some just eat smaller portions, some just weight everything .. the most important part of this is 'You just do what works for you ' !.

Newbie not familiar with WLS terms and acronyms
Tiffykins replied to CLASYLDYT's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Restriction is just what we say when talk about being full faster than we were pre-op or how much our stomachs can hold. Restriction is different for everyone, and it changes as the months go by. I can eat 3 times as much today than I could at 3-4 months out, but I still can not consume more than 1500 calories a day, and that's with grazing, and trying to maintain my current loss. With the band, good restriction only happens once you get a decent fill level in your band and you get to what is considered the "sweet spot". Restriction with the sleeve is immediate. There is no fills, unfills, maintenance. It just happens because of how the surgery performed. Slimies/Foamies are pretty much what happens when you eat too fast, or do not chew your food well enough and then swallow. Digestion starts in the mouth with chewing. Early out, you'll want to eat slow, chew very well, and pace yourself. The best way to explain the slimes is think about a time when you got really nauseated and you knew that you were going to throw up. Your mouth overproduces saliva, and that's what I consider the slimes. Foamies kind of happen if you eat to fast and something needs to come up, again overproduction of saliva happens then you may regurgitate that bite. 5 day pouch test is commonly used to get back on track if you are having a stall due to eating too calories or carbs. Many patients use it to get the carbs out of their bodies since for some patients eating carbs causes them to crave more carbs. I've been lucky and haven't dealt with that phenom. I know a lot of RNY and band patients use the 5 day pouch test to break a stall. Essentially, it's just 5 days of pure Protein and liquids. I've never done it, and probably never will bc I do not tolerate Protein drinks. Also, we do not have a pouch like RNY/band patients. Our stomach functions normally post-op, it's just smaller. So, when you read about the 5 day pouch test, it's geared more towards RNY patients. But, it VSG patients use it as well to get back on track. Surgical Weight Loss 5 Day Pouch Test Hope this helps, and if you have any other questions, post away, we'll help as much as we can. -
My girlfriend is trying to get lap-band surgery. My insurance company, PHCS is requiring "the dread-ed 6 month diet". I am wondering if there is anyway out of this? She is ~250lbs, 5'8", and BMI ~39. She has other medical issues that is causing problems with this is the main problem. She has severe Fibromyalgia to the point that she is sometimes to tired or hurting to bad to get up and go to the bathroom and just holds it. She is pretty much bedridden now due to both pain and fatigue. Because of the fatigue and pain it is absolute hell for her to get up to go to doctors appointments and that is generally the only thing she leaves the house for. She misses those appointments often as well due to this. She has other comorbid issues to go with her 39BMI. Moderate sleep apnea, arthitus in her feet, body pain, and is teetering on diabetes. From what I understand of this 6mo diet, you have to see a nutritionist once a month every month and a physciain every 3 months. I and she are pretty skeptical that she can make these appointments regularly and would atleast miss one or two at which point the 6mo supervised diet is basically restarted ending up with her never getting this surgery. I and she believe that if she were to lose weight she would gain back much of the energy that she has lost over the past 4 years since she began symptoms of fibro, alleviate some of the pain, as well as her self esteem which has suffered terribly. I am trying to search for any cases where an insurance company requires a 6 month medically supervised diet and someone was able to bypass it and any details about such cases. If anyone knows of anything like this or has any advice please reply.

I'd get one. If you're able to eat too much, experiencing a lot of hunger and you're not losing weight, then it sounds like it's time for a fill. For me, I want the weight to come off and I need the band to work for that to happen. I've needed my fills to get to proper restriction. Best of luck to you!

I am getting sleeved on 4/22. I just went through my pre-op last Friday. Everything went well. I have my insurance approval, my FMLA for work, enough time needed to take 4& 1/2 weeks off. A great surgeon & team of weight loss management people. Plus I love being a patient!!!! I am very excited about the new me that's about to occur. Is this strange not to have any doubts about this. I have some stresses going on in my life & somehow this is going to seem like a relief for me. Something to focus my energy on. And by the way 4/22 happens to be my birthday
