    exercising

My doctor cleared me for whatever exercise I wanted 2 weeks post op. I've been doing boot camp 1-3x/week since, and I go fishing at least every two weeks. I've started doing a little yoga, and I've been using my Wii Fit Plus now that I under the weight limit on the balance board (yay!) Be well…

Did You Have To Do 6Mos Supervised Diet

I had to do the supervised diet, and also had to lose 5% of my starting weight. If you don't have to do it, that's great. But if you do, just go with the flow because the doctors you will work with know exactly what to do! The six months is great for getting your head in order as well. While we have surgery on our stomach, our heads need a lot of work and prep too! Good luck!

Did You Have To Do 6Mos Supervised Diet

I had to complete the six month supervised diet also. I was fortune because intially I wanted to have the LapBand. However, after learning of the gastric sleeve I changed my mind, and other issues I was experiencing with the LapBand program. The insurance allowed me to use those six months towards the sleeve requirements. Either way my insurance, Cigna, did require a six month supervised weight loss program. They were the longest six months. Good luck
  4. I was banded in 2003 in TJ. At my highest weight of 310 (I am 5'7"). The band worked great for me - I lost a total of 170 lbs and went from a size 32 to a 6. I got some plastics done (TT, BA, Lipo and face lift) Really loved my new body and most importantly I was no longer obsessed with food. I ran a marathon, started swimming and walking. This continued for 6 years! Then I lost my saiety - and was able to eat more and more. I tried to stay with the program but it wasn't working. Went back to TJ and OCC says - stretched pouch. Took out all my fill (gained 10 lbs) got a bit of fill back - nothing. We did this 3 times - resulting in a total of 30 lbs...plus a few more I managed to pack on...I started beating myself up - why couldn't I do this..I had been so successful. My clothes didn't fit..my tummy tuck hurt...Holy Heck fire...Back I went to OCC and we talked about revisions - Plication seems to be my best bet - lower BMI - didn't want to cut anything out..So I start the second leg of this journey on July 1st- hopefully I will lose the 38 lbs to get back to my lowest weight and use this new tool to help guide me back to where I want to be..
  5. sounds like a lot but it really needs to be measured to tell. It looks like you are dong well with your weight loss. If you were not able to eat this much you might loose too much weight. Maybe the surgeon left you a larger size stomach. I am about 8 months out and I can eat about 3/4 of a lean cuisine. but not all of the mashed potatoes.
  6. Out of control! I was doing so good on my diet with the nutritionist, lost 23 pounds as of 2 weeks ago.. surgery is in 13 days and it seems my appetite is crazy.. I have the feeling Ill be gaining it back by the time surgery is here... Ugh I guess its Im in the state of mind of thinking well I can just have this one more time.. one more time.. one more time... HELP!

    Sugar?

I use Splenda Brown Sugar Blend in moderate quantities and I'm fine but I do count it in my daily calories to keep me honest. Lap Band patients should NOT have any dumping or diarrhea or other unpleasant side effects from sugar like gastric bypass patients but nonetheless, too much sugar = less than desired weight loss. That's enough to keep me in check.
  8. Banded in 4/09 - lost 60 lbs so far - doing well, except I notice that I can't eat solid foods very well and oftentimes am eating things that I know can just slide through - ie. Beans, sour cream, Soups, etc. chicken, Steak, Fish is all almost IMPOSSIBLE even when I chew chew chew..... Even eggs are quite impossible, especially in the morning. I don't want to screw with my weight loss and I am certainly feeling "full" although not for many hours. I am thinking a SLIGHT unfill to allow for more solid food, thus helping me feel "fuller" longer?.?.? Agree or disagree? Thanks!!!!!
  9. My husband and I have been trying to get pregnant for a couple years. My Obgyn said when I lose weight it should help. Have you guys heard anything from your doctors about how long to wait before trying?? My surgery is September 11th.
  10. It really depends on your starting weight /BMI. Weight loss can't be predicted. Everyone is different. Follow your plan and you're losing at the rate that's right for you.

    Gallbladder & Lapband at 64??

Brian, Since the Gallbladder surgery and lapband surgery can be done at the same time, it makes sense to me to go ahead with the lapband too. You recover once instead of twice. The recovery is a breeze. It seems like your doctor is okay with the risk since he said it can be done at the same time. The question to be answered is "are you prepared to change a lifetime of poor food decisions and the pychological loss of your best friend?" You are going to have to find new ways to entertain yourself that doesn't involve a stop for fast food. For me it was easy to make the decision because I was finally hopeful that the Lapband was the answer to 18 years of dieting and weighing 100 pounds more than I did at 38. I am 56, female and enjoy excellent health. ( other than achey knees and lower back from extra weight. ) The hardest part for me was the head hunger which was pretty strong in the first few weeks. I am now, one month post op and no longer struggle with that. In fact, I am hardly ever hungry. It may even be helpful for my grandkids because I am not dragging them to fast food and restaurants for treats and entertainment to feed my own habit. Good luck in your decision and finally, I would ask myself..."What do you have to lose?"

    When can I start exercising

I feel awesome! The liquid diet gives you the strength of 10 men-LOL. Weight is still coming off pretty regular although I feel soft and flabby, would like to work in some exercise soon. I stopped taking pain meds afert 5 days, I walked a lot at the hospital and believe that really helped my recovery. I go to the doc tomorrow to find out what the deal is on the exercise-I'll post answers here.
  13. No, you can continue to lose weight after 2 years. If you exercise and watch your calorie intake the weight continues to come off. What happens is if you aren't careful you will began to eat more and start to gain it back because your stomach is completely healed and you get to where you can eat anything you want. It becomes a case of disipline on your part. Head hunger still plays a great part in your struggle to lose and keep the weight off. I am nearly 2 years out and am beginning to have to use self control more than I have in the past. Remember this sugery is a tool, we choose to use it correctly.

    September banders

Banded sept 30th. approx 12 lb weight loss in 3 weeks. My incision where my port is burns and still having slight amount of drainage anyone else have this?
  15. I had some things that "helped" me accelerate my weight loss, including a stricture that kept me from eating solids for several weeks and a two week bout of stomach flu, so I know that it's not quite typical. Things are slowing down for me and I've been losing and regaining the same 5 pounds for the last two weeks XD, so I understand your frustration. When I stall, I usually try a couple things. First, I go back to basics. I write down everything I eat, down to the last bite. I focus on Protein first with no extras and getting all my Water in and I find that somewhere along the line I've been adding a snack here or there mindlessly. Get a little extra exercise, too. Some people swear by upping caloric intake to get out of a stall. I've also heard that people have good results with Diva's Boot Camp, if you search for that post. Nobody knows for certain why we stall when we're all eating next to nothing. Sometimes it's glycogen related, but sometimes we just don't lose. Keep perspective that even though it doesn't seem like a lot... it really is. Could I have lost weight without the surgery? Certainly not so much and certainly not without being absolutely miserable. I think sometimes the hardest part is just keeping perspective on our weight loss because after so long we finally feel it's going to work and we just want to be successful already and so we get frustrated even when we know it's not a magic weight loss surgery.
  16. I am only 9 weeks out of surgery, I am feeling great however for the past 3 weeks I have stalled. I have gained a pound, lost a pound, for 3 WEEKS!!! I am eating my 'soft' foods, getting in my Proteins, my Water, upp'd my exercise (walking) and still no change. I know all about the 3 week stall, that lasted about 6 days for me but not this 9 week stall. It's so frustrating and I feel like I am already a failure ..... anyone else experienced this?
  17. I went in to see my PCP having been sleeved on 12/5. I told him I was disappointed with my weight loss compared to others. I know. I know. We should not compare ourselves but we all do. I weighed 280 when I was there in his office in November. The day I was in his office I weighed 252. Today I am down to 247.6 I am thrilled to be loosing but when I read about the people who lose 70-100 lbs in 3 months I just have to wonder what am I doing wrong. My PCP shook his head and ask me to consider my journey in its entirety My biggest recorded weight in his office was 386lbs in 2006. I fought down to 270 by 2008 and then bounced around 260 to 300 until I received by sleeve in 2012. All you dieters know that in order to lose over 100 lbs and keep it off for years I had already made major changes tommy eatting patterns. My PCP explain to me that because the surgery was not a big shock to my body I did see the big change. I most definitely eat less calories on a continued bases now but my NUT actual ask me to up my calories from the 900 I was doing to 1300-1500 pre surgery. Does anyone else think that is kind of comical. I have seen many stalls over the years even when doing the right things. My PCP say the body has set points where it will not want to let go of more. That is when I need to up calories a day or two the back off. Also I must up what I am forcing the body to urn during a stall. That is very hard for me I am no fan of exercise but I press on. My PCP told me to realize had I not already had made so many changes before surgery I would have seen a bigger difference but I would have been at a much higher starting weight to begin with. So I guess it all evens out in the end. This made me feel better about the lost post surgery. My hope with surgey was it would take me down the next hundred as my body seemed unwilling to go down below 260 even after that 6 month supervised 900 calorie diet the NUT complained was to low. So I do feel an accomplishment to be at 247.6 it is my lowest adult weight. I certainly hope to keep moving down the scale. My current limits 800 calories 50 carbs and 70 Protein. I try to walk uphill at 3mph for 30 mins 5 times a week. Yes it is a journey but I feel like I am running the hardest marathon ever!
  18. I think you're doing great! That's a lot to lose in just two short months. I think a lot of those huge fast weight losses are also with folks who started off heavier than you did at your sleeve weight. I've read in medical journals that the overall average loss with the sleeve tends to be 10 - 15 lbs per month. Upping the calories makes a lot of sense. I read somewhere about the science behind stalls, Water weight and the like. Sometimes it takes a calorie increase to get back to losing. You're to be congratulated on your success! Also, just think that pre-sleeve how much would you have gained during this past holiday season? Best of luck on your continued success.

    Spare Tire??

Tara is right. When burning fat, there is no way to isolate a target area to lose from first. The only thing you can do is a get in a good cardio workout. 30 mins is sufficient as long as your heart rate is elevated and you maintain your Target Heart Rate (THR). Here is a link to a THR calculator if you don't know what yours should be: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/target-heart-rate/SM00083 Additionally, circuit training (weight lifting) is optimal for maximum fat burn and overall body toning. Many people confuse weight lifting resulting in huge manly muscles, when in reality that's far more difficult to achieve (due to nutritional demands and heavy lifting opposed to # reps). Circuit training should be viewed as muscle strengthening ordinarily. Most gyms, for safety reasons, require all members to undergo a machine orientation where they teach you how to use the machine appropriately. See if this is offered by your gym. Sure it may be boring for them, but who gives a ****, they signed up for the job. In reality, it's your safety. Some of these machines may look easy, but they actually require specific postures or specific angles of compression etc for optimal results. Otherwise you won't get the results you are looking for. Additionally, pick up any SELF magazine, or go online for some workout regimens. Let those guide you if you are unsure of how many reps to do, what your target weights should be. Unfortunately exercise is not a wing it task, it needs to be done correctly.

    December 2005 bandsters

HI Janice, Scherry here I was banded Dec. 28, 2005 in Houston Texas Dr Spiegel. I also go to Weight Watchers and have been for over a year, that's my support group like you said the band is only a tool. I am 2.6 lbs from my goal. It's been slow but good I've had my problems adjusting to what I can and can't eat but I can at least have a bit of anything I want. I also have been going to Curves for over a year. I've lost 91 lbs to day. I'd love for us to be e-mail buddies. Scherry in Texas

  24. It has been a while. I have been banded since 02/2008 and at my lowest weight ha lost 111 lbs. I had thyroid cancer that was caught by my lap-band doctor when I put on 30 lbs in a few months and had trouble swallowing. I am now down 86 lbs but struggle to lose again. I had to have an unexpected surgery in May and didn't even think about what effects it might have on my band. I am in my 6th week f recovery and I have started feelig like my band is too tight. I can drink slowly but most all foods just find their way back up. It is not horribly painful like the "stuck" feelig but lots of pressure. I have days I can eat anythig and days I can't swallow my own spit. It is very bothersome and I worry that it could be something more. Thinking of going back on liquids for a few days and seeing if it helps any. Has anyone else had a surgery like this that an share the effects on the band? Also, what did you do to jump start the weight loss again after everythig settled down? Thanks for the support and advice.
  25. Heidikate, I had my orientation first, they weighed me in , then they scheduled me for the dietician and the surgeon ( Dr. Hahn- he is awesome ). At that appointment he gave me a goal weight and said when I come within 5 lbs of that to call in and they would schedule me for my psychiatric appointment. Following the diet in the binder they gave me I lost the weight within a month and completed the psyc. And then had to wait for the last 5 lbs to come off before they would schedule me for the surgery . Then I had to do an ekg. All together it took two months from start to finish. My friend went to Kaiser SSF and got it done with within a month and half. She didn't need to loose weight but had to attend a lot of classes. Did the DR say you had to loose weight? Did you get the binder? Good luck to you !
