  1. Hello everyone. I'm new to this forum, but hope to connect with others to get support, information, etc. I'm scheduled for my surgery 10/22 with Dr. Peter Billing at Eviva in WA State. I'm excited but a bit nervous, since this will be such a life changing thing. Any words of wisdom for me from those who've gone through it? Thanks!
  2. Also Jazzy I recommend the liquid calcium citrate, it's brand name is Wellesse, tasted just like orange pushup sherbet you have as a little kid, well into my second bottle, it does cost about $10 but I think worth it. I also like the B12 melts I got from Bariatric Pal store, super reasonable price, delivery is very quick. I choose black cherry but they also come in mint.
  3. Not bad , I have Barimelts from Bariatric Pal Store. Except for being a little grainy as they dissolve they are fine. I like that it's 1 prenatal versus most everybody else that are 2. And I got Spring Valley, one of Wal-Mart's house brands so very reasonable price. I got the blend with folate. Maybe $6-7 I forget now, but certainly below $10.
  4. I’m here . Surgery next week 10/9 😱

    Dumping Syndrome 2+ years Postop

My dumping and my gall bladder/bile duct stones were extremely different symptoms. Not sure if that is the same for all. Dumping from sugar - sweats, fatigue, some diarrhoea, yawning, maybe nausea but pain free or very mild cramps at worst, lasts 30-45 minutes and suddenly stops. Unpleasant but manageable. Occurs as a set of symptoms but in degrees - mild for small sugar overdose, stronger for big sugar eating screw-up. Gall bladder - extreme pain- seriously painful. Worse than labour pains! Nausea and retching, esp just before bouts of diarrhoea, pain level at 6/10 for 45 minutes then 8/10 for 15-20 minutes when I cannot sit on the toilet even, just would lie on the floor groaning. Hot sweats from the pain, that stop in the lower-pain parts of cycle. Repeat cycle every hour or so for 12-36 hours. In my case, the difference was chalk and cheese. Mostly - gall bladder = overwhelming symptom is bad pain; dumping = nasty but almost no pain.

    2 days post op

Hello all I'm new here. I was just sleeved on 10/04. So far I am doing okay. I have a lot of gas pain and am a bit sore. My surgeon wants us to drink 1-1.5 bottles of clear isopure a day and I can't even choke that stuff down without wanting to throw up. What else can I drink to get my protein in? Sorry things are not going as smoothly as you like so far. I surgery 10/2 and have had some good days and some bad. Yesterday, I had to take the hydrocodone they sent me home with because I decided to walk around the mall and it was way too much for me. Today, I've been taking it easier and havent felt as bad. Each day gets a bit easier which is what is keeping me positive. Also checked the scale and was 4 pound lighter than when I went into surgery which is nice. Tmi, I also have had diarrhea since day 2 post OP. I figure it's better than being constipated. Sent from my SM-G960U using BariatricPal mobile app

Just back to vent!! Had surgery Monday 10/1. Surgery was more involved than they thought. I had a large hiatal hernia that needed to be repaired and a lot of scar tissue adhesions that had to be removed. I went home Tuesday and felt pretty good. Wednesday I felt really good and was excited. Well Thursday I woke up feeling like shit. I couldn’t drink and had the diarrhea. Of course I had to get my period also (tmi) which really put me over the edge. After being sick all day Thursday I was sent back to hospital Friday for iv fluids, nausea meds, and stronger pain meds because of the severe stomach cramps. I slept most of yesterday and woke up this morning feeling good again. Now as they say has gone on I feel like shit again. I am totally regretting this as I just want to feel better and eat a friggin meal. Since 830am I’ve only been able to get in 20 oz. then I get the diarrhea again!!!!!! I have 3 kids and I have to go back to work Tuesday. I guess I just wasn’t expecting to feel this bad at this point. Just feeling sad.
  10. Viffer, I have to adjust all of my stated weights down by 10 lb as I found out that the barbell I've been using is only 35 pounds. That being said, I did do a couple of one rep max tests this week and have found my max one-rep deadlift is 305 and squat is 295. I tried like hell to get to 300 squat so I can say it's at 300, but it just wasn't happening LOL

How long does the chest pain last?

@sleevemebaby7781 Feeling miserable: yes normal. Chest pain: For me it was 3 days of chest pain which went away day 3 after I slept on my left side to get the gas to move through. Walking helps too (still does). Water intolerance: I couldn’t consume any fluids or swallow anything until the chest pain dissolved. Consuming water can be difficult, but I liked caffeine-free hot tea, vitamin water zero and other things. Dehydration? If you don’t get something, yes. But take your time and be patient. Take SMALL SIPS. Also try sugar free popsicles to get fluids in. Room temperature beverages still nauseates me (sleeved 9/19). Tired and constantly sleepy: 100% normal! #1 side effect of the procedure is fatigue. I was constantly tired for about 2.5 weeks. I just started to perk up after moving to soft foods. Good luck

My bedroom is on the third floor, relative to where we park. I'll be real: the drive home (just a few miles, though the roads here are crappy), followed by the trip up the first flight of stairs, nearly made me throw up. I didn't, but it was very close. I didn't enjoy the trip to the third floor, that evening, either. Today is my second full day home (surgery 10/3), and I don't notice the stairs especially much, now. I haven't been outside to walk yet. I just do laps around the living room and pace up and down the hall. I didn't have enough sugar-free Jello in the house when I left for my surgery. I sent my spouse to get more. I like the premeasured cups, because it's easier to know how much I'm getting. I don't have enough premade protein drinks, either, but that was kind of by design, since everyone said "your tastes will change." I also wanted to know what would settle. I'm doing well on Unjury. I haven't tried the one Muscle Milk I have left in the pantry, yet. Quest powder mixed with water might be OK, but I think it's going to be too thick if I try it with milk--I'm definitely going to hold off another day before risking that.

    Health expert panel ranks diets

I think it depends on the individuals genetic make up or health conditions. The diet you list is great for my uterine fibroids, but bad for my hypothyroidism. Keto was great for my thyroid, bad for my fibroids. The only thing I know is when I eat gluten and carbs my body smells and I'm sluggish, so I HAVE to keep my total carbs below 30 / 20 net. Sugar below 15 for day, try to keep it at 10.

Please give me your meal plan

My 7 weeks starts Monday, but I eat 4-6 small meals per day avg 100 cal per serving. I only have shakes now if I know I won't meet my protein goals or want to add some to my coffee (1/3 bottle with decaf coffee). 40cal, 10 gr protein My breakfast is often light and fit dannon yogurt 80cal, 13 g protein with 2 Tbsp of ground flax 70 cal Lunch Tuna creations 70 cal, 15 gr protein. 2 oz cottage cheese 40 cal, 8 gr protein 2nd lunch 2 oz deli turkey 12g protein cheese stick , 5 gr protein Dinner 2 oz chicken, 14 gr protein, cottage cheese 2oz 8 gr protein If I'm still short I add peanut butter or other high protein snack. I mix up my meals, but work day lunches tend to go tuna just because I don't have to measure. My daily cals are 600 - 700 pending day of week.

It’s interesting to see the different requirements pre and post op from others. My surgeon had no pre op diet changes and strictly only clear liquids first 7 days after surgery Protein introduced day 8. Getting my mind ready for 10/15. Big changes coming 🙂

    Being wasteful.......

I bought lots of 10 calorie jellies (or do you call them jello?) to eat during the immediate post op phase, but I've got loads left over, because I'm finding them unbearably sweet. I didn't initially believe what was said about tastes changing post op, but that has actually been my experience. I'm even finding grapes a little too sweet. I take a flavoured protein shake to work for lunch, but that's just for convenience and to get enough protein down my neck. I don't really enjoy the flavour. The rest of the time I eat proper food. I can even manage a tiny portion of steak now! 😃

    Hair Loss! OMG!

Biotin, protein, vitamins, Rogaine...naked chants under the moon....virgin sacrifices....none of this is going to save you from hair loss. Until you are 3-6 months post surgery....you really don't know what it's going to be like for you. Wait until you get there. I remember thinking...I'm doing everything right! The Biotin will save me. I'll eat extra protein. I'll use super expensive hair preserving supplements and shampoo. I'll use Lady Rogaine just in case! It will never happen to me! Bahahahaha....oh yes....yes, it did. Tellogen Effluvium, you are an evil beeyatch...and Yes, you are part of weight loss surgery that almost no one escapes. (I've asked at live support groups...so far, it's pretty universal...in spite of how much it's downplayed) I had hair loss between month 4 to month 8 post surgery, but also had lots of baby hairs coming in...could feel a fleet of them poking up under my hair.....which was pretty encouraging. (you can kinda stick your fingers under your hair and pat your scalp...you'll feel all sorts of tiny hairs regrowing, little stubbles and then little pokey hairs.....but it takes them a while to get as long as the rest of your hair) The new crop of little hairs coming in under the long hair has made from some funky hair days. LOL. My hair is weirdly fluffy and oddly full close to my head and stringier and thinner in the longer parts, which I've been cutting a little shorter to kinda "help" the new growth catch up and blend my newer and older hair back together. I have never experienced bald/thin spots on my scalp. Just a lot of aggressive shedding, followed by aggressive regrowth. It's gonna look weird for a while, particularly if you really love wearing your hair longer. For a healthy person, hair grows about a quarter inch to half an inch a month...faster in warmer months, slower in cold. I keep my hair about 7-10 inches long depending on the layer....so it's gonna be a while until all the old thin hair is trimmed out and the new full thickness is achieved. Might take about two years for mine to be like it was, but I can definitely tell it's much thicker in the couple inches next to my scalp already. Should turn out awesome:) If you like your hair long...you're gonna need patience. Shorter styles will fill back in quicker:) We were told eating enough calories is important in controlling hair loss.. My clinic recommended 1000-1200 calories per day starting at 3 weeks post surgery.

    Am I eating enough.

I recommend loggin your food in myfitnesspal, so you can track calories, carbs, protein, fats. My surgeon tracks almost 2000 patients. A year after surgery, most are still eating under 1000 calories a day. They are healthy (some need just vitamins, some also need folic acid and B12 supplements). Did you put on weight at surgery time? Often people do and it takes a bit to shed that. And many many people have a ‘three week stall’ where the weight loss slows at the 3 week (but can me 6 or 8 or 10 week) mark. Stick to your programme. At first blush your eating sounds fine at this point - you can’t help but lose. Are you walking? That helps too...

    Food funerals?

I'm going to try. Monday is my big trip to buy a ton of shakes and puree baby foods. I've already gained 10 or 15lbs since my first appointment. I am scared of when I go back, which is the day before my surgery, and I will have gained even more. Hopefully if I can stick to the preop, I can get closer to my starting weight. Hey everyone! Just wanted to check in :) had my surgery Monday 10/1 and I feel great :) just went for a short walk with my dog and got some gas out lol but I took Percocet once in the hospital Tuesday, Tylenol Tuesday night, and since then no pain meds. A few days were tough I won’t lie, but I feel really good and you will too!!!! I’m able to sleep on my side now (game changer as I hate sleeping on my back) and can’t wait to start something other than protein shakes etc in a few days :) stay strong all!!!!

    Just had intake appointment

I agree with @MargoCL so much. The first clinic I went to (not as medical as claimed) was going to fast track my surgery for 3 months. There was a very limited concept of prep. They also kept focusing on how I was gonna die young because of my weight and forged a lot of false conditions in my chart. I left them after 2 visits. Second place was associated with a hospital, they were doctors, weight management and endocrine experts, by the book, and helped me pace myself by learning (and unlearning) during my 6-mo insurance mandated period. I learned SO MUCH st a speed I could consume it. All of those questions you had, I had. The time frame really wrapped my head around this. I joined this group three months into that process. Once I found my stride, from April to September - I lost 28 lbs on my own (including vacations, dinners out, and more cooking at home) BEFORE surgery. It wasn’t easy and my family and friends know that. I learned what protein rich meals looked like. I learned how gooood healthy food can be. I met with my surgeon 3 times and my psychologist who prepared me for: (1) deciding on this step (2) side effects to consider and hobbies to start/maintain (3) options for support since my loved ones are 3,000 miles away (4) managing other people and how to not care (5) how to get help if traumatic memories resurrect. You have to do what’s right for you, but I’ve been in those shoes and I could have easily posted your post in February when I started. Just know that whatever you decide, choose health. You want to make a change - make the change that’s right for you. And BTW, it’s *not* easy. Once you put in the pre-surgery work, you’ll soon realize that. Lastly, my mind wasn’t TRULY made up until the week before surgery. In March, I said “I’ll go through this prep time and see how I feel. If I feel like I want to continue on my own AND BE SUCCESSFUL, I’ll call it off.” But the most important thing was to just start. I knew I’d need a support group no matter what though. I realized that I wanted to be out of pain and wanted to be able to start working out again. So, I was sleeved 9/19. I’ve had some recovery bumps because of co-morbid conditions, but my plantar fasciitis and knee pain is gone. Good luck! 🍀
