    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

Hey all! I’m three weeks post op today from bypass. I’ve been very lucky with easily getting down the required liquids and my small blended meals. I’m suddenly struggling with food obsession again. I was okay the first while bc I knew I couldn’t, but now I’m trying actual food and really want the “bad” food. I want pizza and creamy pastas and the chocolate. I’ve held off so far, but have been creeping over the calories. It doesn’t help that I’m not losing much weight. “Only” 5 lbs in the last two weeks. I think the amount of free time isn’t helping. I’m still off work and most of my friends/family are busy this time of year. Any suggestions?
  2. I lost 16 lbs the whole first month, and i started out at almost 400 lbs. People lose at all different rates due to a bunch of different factors, many of which you have little to no control over, including age, gender, starting BMI, metabolic rate, percentage of your body that is muscle, whether or not you lost a bunch of weight before surgery, etc. The only two things you have a lot of control over are your activity level and how closely you stick to your clinic's program. If you do well with those two things, you WILL lose the weight, whether fast or slow. I was a slow loser from the get-go and ended up losing 100% of my excess weight. if you havent' lost any weight in a week and you're following your program, then you're just in a stall. Happens to most of us - and you're likely to have more along the way. When you hit one, just stick to your program and stay off the scale for a few days - and know that it'll eventually break and the weight loss will start up again. They typically last 1-3 weeks.

    Post VSG Regrets?

Nope. Some brief stalls but pretty consistent loss all along. Now two months past my 2 year mark I’ve dropped another 5 lbs. I’m now making a concerted effort to maintain. I’m happy, healthy, fit, and have zero ill effects from surgery. I followed the plan I was given, I now eat a slightly higher carb content diet, but still focus on protein first.

ProCare Health One A Day Vitamin

I have been taking this for two months now and I just got my labs back and they were right in line with what They were three months before taking the bariatric advantage. Just FYI for those considering it. I like iT because it’s truly one a day and it’s cheaper.
  5. I don't have sugar cravings unless I see some tasty looking treat, but I'm hungry all the time, and have been since a week after surgery. I've tried more fiber, more fat, more protein, more liquid... basically the only thing that helps me personally is to drink hot tea with milk or sugar free hot chocolate between meals (usually hot tea). If you find something that helps, please post it here so maybe I'll find something else to try!!!
  6. I would apply for insurance in the market place online. This is so unfortunate. At six weeks I was eating ground meats (and like one green bean if I had room after 4 oz.). Most of the time I could tolerate 3oz. and would snack on low-fat cheese or chicken bone broth LS to make up the protein. I smeared veggies into a sauce to put on the meat, average amount 1 teaspoon.
  7. Hi everyone. I had gastric bypass on September 28 and so far, things are great. I'm down 31 lbs., I feel fantastic and I've already been able to eliminate some medications. Here's my question... I was very constipated after surgery (which I know is to be expected) and had only gone 2 or 3 times in 3 weeks, even when using benefiber every morning and evening. After discussing with my doctor, I started fiber chews at twice the normal dose (2 chews twice a day) until things started moving normally, and two days ago knocked it back to 1 chew twice a day. Now, my poops are regular (usually once a day) but I'm concerned that they are very light colored and they float. I've done some research online and this can indicate several different things, including liver disease (I did have non-alcoholic fatty liver prior to surgery) or malabsorption (not getting enough nutrients). I'm just starting my soft foods phase, so I wasn't able to have much fiber until now but I'm curious if any others had experienced this particular issue, and if it turned out to me anything major. I feel better than I have in years and have so much energy, so I think if it were something serious I would know. I'd just like to see if anyone else had any insight. Thanks! Missy

    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

I’m ok now as not hormonal but I got irritated when I couldn’t do what I would normally do before a period. I don’t regret it now. my surgeon said that our hormones are out of whack when we have surgery because as we burn fat the hormones react differently? I’ve been very emotional some days. anyone that thinks this is an easy walk in the park are very mistaken. you have to work for it. I’ve lost 15lbs in 2 weeks and 3 days and before op I lost 16 pounds on the milk liver shrinking pre op diet so I can’t complain although everyone loses differently. I think we all think sometimes it should be faster but losing this fast has never happened before and for that I’m grateful.I’ve been doing walks again finally I feel so much better other than pain on one side the incision where they take the stomach out. I know every day will get better, change isn’t easy but it will be worth it.
  9. Hi! I am going on 6 weeks post op and am only down 18 lbs. I feel like I am failing as well, I haven't lost for a full week. I can get all of my liquids down but am unsure of how many carbs I can consume with canned fruit and other easily consumed carbs like sugar free pudding. My company recently went on strike and my insurance has been cancelled so no dietician appointments for the near future. Does anyone have any suggestions? Anything would be great! I am tolerating 1/4 cup meals of canned chicken and veggies...
  10. I'm not entirely sure what you mean, either, but if you mean you've stalled this week, then you're experiencing the infamous "three week stall" that probably 90% of us experience. Just so you know, this will likely just be the first of many. To get through it, just stick to your program and stay off your scale for a few days. Your weight loss WILL start up again (although probably not 30 lbs - losses really slow down after the first month). if you want to read more about the stall, do a search of this site on the three week stall. Last time I checked, there were over 17,500 posts on it (and no, I am NOT kidding..)

    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

Hello! I received gastric sleeve surgery on October 13th. It has been very re-assuring to read all of your stories and questions. Knowing that many of you are having the same pains and issues has helped calm a lot of my concerns/fears. I will admit that these first two weeks were very challenging. I had many “why on earth did I choose this?” moments. I am seriously grieving the loss of my favorite foods. Lord please help me control myself if I have to watch another gooey cheese pizza commercial! But, I decided to have gastric sleeve when my blood pressure kept creeping up to dangerously high levels (190s). I was scared I would have a heart attack any day. This surgery has renewed my hope in my future long life. Since I started working with the nutritionist at the end of July, I have lost 46 pounds. After surgery, my blood pressure has reached normal healthy numbers (110) for the first time in years! So, I am trying to remain focused on the positive reasons rather than my loss of gooey cheese pizza.

    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

Oh wow! They let you have food so soon! Maybe this is why I'm so hungry! I received my surgery at the Univerisity of Kentucky Hospital. And yeah, I've been noticing everyone's pre/post-op diets are so different. My pre-op diet was only a week-long (clear liquids only) and I continue clears for a week post-op. Tomorrow I can do "full liquids" which is pretty much creamy soups for a week, then pureed foods for a week. From there it's soft foods, then adding in the rest by Week 6.
  13. I'm sorry... can you clarify your post? You said you lost 30 pounds in a week but haven't lost any weight? Am I not reading it right? Regardless, you have to give yourself time to heal. What food are you eating? On my plan, I was just starting the pureed stage. The focus for me was water and then protein.

    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

Yes we are in this together, I had a caesarean with my son too but I found this pain far worse than that. everyone is different though. what hospital did you have yours? It seems every hospital does things differently 1-4 weeks pureed. 4-8 weeks soft foods 8-12 weeks normal foods. but also told it’s our journey and it’s just a guide. We don’t get an appointment post op for 6 weeks so literally have to get on with it. it’s so nice to know someone who’s going through it around the same sort of time as me. I’ve posted the guide they gave me. xx

    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

Hiya, I was the same the first few days to a week was very hard to get sips down and wasn’t drinking enough, I’m still not and I’m 2 and a half weeks post op. my Bariactric nurse suggested soups in between meals to up my fluid intake. we are supposed to have at least 1.8 pints a day, 1 litre, I’ve only managed it once but I’m trying. mist a learning curve. you will get there, it gets easier, my nurse actually told me to add no added sugar squash to make it easier to drink and it has seemed to work. We are told to start soft foods like flaked fish etc after 3 weeks and now until then puréed food. I get down about 1- 1 and a half table spoons worth of food but because I was due a period I struggled the last few days of actually feeling hungry although probably head hunger as when I’m hormonal I normally feel more hungry and eat more so that was a struggle. I’ve not feeling sick but have suffered a lot with the runs and had to take Imodium. im trying to eliminate what food it might be. I was told to stop taking the Zoton as it can cause diarrhoea so got to wait until it’s out of my system. I have recovered quite well as incisions are nearly healed and I’m able to sleep on 1 side now rather than on my back. my stomach inside where they pulled my stomach out is the most painful but believe me day by day it does get better. I was given 9 days to prepare for the gastric sleeve and I’ve found most support online, I really was walking in the dark with it. I have PCOS and metabolic syndrome so needed to have this done. I wish you a healing recovery and any help or questions you need to ask feel free to ask me. we can help each other through this change. vicky x
  16. I am 3 weeks post op and I lost about 30 pounds in the last week. I haven't lost any weight and I have a hard time eating food, especially getting protein in. Did anybody else have issues? I am Really discouraged? My rheumatoid arthritis is flaring up so bad walking is killing me and I am starting to regret my choices.

    Get ready for my surgery

I bought those little bathroom cups and set up some that I would constantly refill with water to get me through the first couple weeks. Helped a ton to visualize that “ok, I’ve emptied 3 of them, one more won’t be so bad” instead of what seemed daunting in a big water bottle. Also, invest in good shoes. You’re worth the miles you’ll put on them and your feet with thank you!

    food

Not yet. I'm only 6 weeks out, but I was told to minimize carbs for now. I'm not a huge fan of rice, pasta, etc. I do prefer brown or wild rice to white rice, but most of the time, I would only eat rice with curry or other Indian food, which I haven't had yet anyway.

  20. Hi, On day three post op and the pain is excruciating. I can’t drink or eat or even take my medicines without the pain becoming unbearable. This morning I can’t sit or stand or lie down because it hurts so much. They have me paracetamol but taking it makes the pain worse. I’m really scared and In pain- what’s gone wrong?

    Bariatric surgery and keto?

My surgeon's plan was very low-carb but also low-fat. It wasn't working for me, and my weight loss slowed and then stalled. My new NUT and I put together a plan that was a little higher in carbs, and it worked—apparently my body needs carbs to prepare for working in the beet fields of the gulag or whatever. Added in about 100 calories of carbs a day (that's 25g, math people) and the weight loss resumed its 3-4 lbs. a week swoosh. Every body is different.

    Get ready for my surgery

I was ALL up in my feelings before surgery and just had to be reassured constantly. But here's the thing. The weight is going to come FLYING off you. The first few weeks are hard while you work off the fluids and gas and get used to the new way of things. But once you pee away the extra surgical fluids, you are in the serious honeymoon phase. I could step on the scale three times a day and have it be lower—and I started at a lower weight. Once you get used to it, you're going to notice so much energy. You won't be stuck in bed. You'll be up and about before you know it. I know you got this. You're gonna rock it.

Post op 1 day pain and food

They pump you absolutely chock full of both fluids and surgical gas. As much as it hurts, walking will help dispel the gas. I had sleeve, not bypass, but all laparoscopic surgeries require gas to keep certain bits inflated and give the surgeon room to work. I lived on chewable Gas-X (simethicone tablets) for three days post-op, and then it just... stopped.

    Long term diet after DS?

Many post op plans are pretty similar regardless of surgery. With my sleeve I had to follow 2 weeks liquids, 2 weeks purées (think sloppy no real chewing), 2 weeks soft (still pretty moist only a few chews needed) then slowly introduce more dense food as able. Certain foods were not allowed for a period of time & others not while I was losing. You may find you have to keep food pretty moist (think sauces, gravies, etc.) for a while. Your tummy can be pretty sensitive to begin too & foods you previously ate you can’t yet. Plus it’s not unusual for your sense of taste & smell to change temporarily. Some have trouble with things like eggs & chicken. It’s trial & error but don’t give up a food, just try it again later and if you need to stay at a stage longer that’s fine - we heal & recover differently. The best place to start is with the the list of allowed foods provided by your surgical team. They’ve been chosen so they don’t stress your healing & sensitive tummy & altered digestive system. You may still have issues with some or you may not. Raw fruit & vegetables, fruit skin, etc. are too coarse for your digestive system at first. The reason for no rice, bread, pasta is two fold. One to cut out processed empty calorie, low nutrition, starchy carbs from your diet while losing (many add these back in moderation in maintenance). And secondly because they swell & fill your much smaller tummy before you can get your protein in. Protein is key. Always protein first. Most eating plans while you’re losing are low fat, low carb, high protein. This is the time you also start exploring how you want to eat in the future. You try new ingredients, cooking styles, try alternative protein & nutritional sources. You’ll find you become very focussed on the nutritional value of what you eat. If you’re not sure about what you can eat & when have a conversation with your dietician. I saw my dietician every fortnight until about 4 months into maintenance then COVID hit but I could call her at any time I needed. We would discuss foods I had added to my diet, how I managed them & what I wanted to try next. She would sometimes suggest alternatives or suggest I wait or go slowly with some things. Good luck.

    Liver reduction day of surgery

The first day is the hardest. There is a lot of pain and things don't seem to settle well with your stomach. Take the pain meds as you need them to get through that discomfort. I went home after two days and used all the pain medication within the first two days after I was home (because I really didn't receive much). I told my doctor and had a refill of the medication. But by day three at home, the pain was tolerable. Make sure you are not gulping your liquids. I did that once - and I realized that I would never do that again. Take things slowly! I know you will want to rush things (at least I sure did), but I have learned that this is a sprint and that my body is healing while learning new habits. I don't want to have any further problems, so I am making sure that I don't rush the process. Keep us updated!
