  1. Anyone out there have a gastric sleeve revised to a gastic bypass?
  2. Hi all! I can imagine that you all know how I am feeling, with surgery being in 24 hours! Surgeon keeps repeating how much 'higher' risk I am as I am revising (even though it's been yearssss since I had my my band out) and that I could have a leak and die, and all these terrible things. It's his job to ensure I know what I am doing and I make an educated choice, but i am SO scared now. I wanted to know if a) your surgeon found lots of scar tissue when you revised how long your surgery actually took and c)do you know of people who had leaks etc. I am having afternoon surgery (boo hoo!) and wish that was not the case, as I will have allllllll day to stress.

    lap band vs gastric bypass

I think it will still be a while yet before the Band is the prefered bariatric surgery in the US. Part of the issue is that people see how fast they lose with the various types of by-passes. And since we live in such a "I want now!" socity (think of Veruca Salt's song form Willy Wonka), I think people will continue to press for the by-passes. According to my surgeon, they find that one of the revisions that they are doing with the by-pass patatints is the band. I think of those poor people who've had huge wacks of their innereds removed, only to get the band, when they should have had the band in the first place. I think as more people have the by-pass, and have troubles with that procedure, insurance companies are going to start looking at their cost/benifit analysis and decide that the Band is a much better alternative. Doctors will start looking at the lower mortality rate of Band patients, and the lower over all complication rate. Of course, there are unethical doctors out there, just as there are in any profession. So, that is my opionion.

    Not losing weight

Are you working out? How many grams of Protein are you consuming daily? My doctors say it's best to get around 80 grams of protein daily. I just started working out because my weight has reached a stand still and I had surgery back in April and I've lost 40 lbs Good luck!! Band With the Sleeve, anyone do both???

Not everyone loses well with a band. Inamed announced recently that the average someone can expect to lose with a band is 55% of their excess weight. If someone is a 50+ BMI by the time they lose half their excess weight they are still obese. I am not in favor of higher BMIs getting banded, far too many revise to a sleeve or bypass. Not saying one can't get to goal from a high BMI to healthy BMI, but it is not the norm.

    Pain....Pain,,,,,

Maybe you'll get sleeved?! I know it's a pain to have to recover from that, but hopefully you'd be done with surgery after that. Sarah Elsekhawy who got revised from GPS to VSG due to insufficient weight loss said it didn't hurt any more than the GPS. She posted that on VST nearly 2 weeks ago when she was only a few days out of surgery. I hope they manage to sort you out soon though. All the best!

Weight Loss and what to expect

Good morning Caela88....I didn't have a lap band, but I was sleeved in 2011. I started at 223, was about 210 at surgery, and reached my goal weight of 139 in just under a year. Have kept it off for 4 plus years now. I am 5'3" I don't know why the revision would affect the amount of your weight loss; the sleeve is a completely different procedure in my mind. My dr. would not give me the lap band because of the poor statistics of success. I have a feeling you will do very well. Good luck and if my success is your guide you'll be at your goal weight by the end of the year!
  9. Hi everyone, I was sleeved (actually a band to sleeve revision) on Sept. 3rd and all went well. I am having crazy loud abdominal gas noises but very difficult in getting the gas out. In the few times I have been able to pass ANY of the gas, first was diarrhea then a large amount of gas. When the gas came out, it almost felt as my abdomen was rearranged. I am guessing it was the CO2 from the surgery but does anyone know better how to pass it? THANKS!!!

  14. Hello, This is me reaching out to you all... I am exactly one week out from a gastric sleeve op and today when I was prepping dinner for my kids and husband, without thinking, *ARGH* I tasted my turkey meatloaf. By the time it hit me that I should not be eating it and I spit what was left of it out, I had already swallowed a bit. I am on post-op phase 3 diet (for my Dr. that means liquids only for the first 2 weeks, which by the way is already getting rough because I'm really hungry all day). Anyone out there experience something similar, or was allowed to eat mushy solids sooner? I am feeling a bit nauseous and worried I might have done damage to my new stomach. I have to keep working on old reflexes... I would really appreciate any advice or feedback anyone has on this topic. Meanwhile, since I'm only a week away from surgery, and this is my second run around, I thought I'd also take a few minutes to share my journey. I had a lap band put in 2011 and lost 110lbs within a year. I was eating well and exercising a lot and for most of that time had very little to no restriction on my band because for some reason just having the band itself in there was restricting enough. About a year and 1/2 into the surgery, I started to get stuck a lot, (with no restriction). In fact, for almost a year after that I could not eat solids without throwing up. So if I chose to eat solids I knew I would be vomiting a few minutes later... Awful year+ and when I got pregnant and could not even keep liquids down, I ended up getting my lap band taken out at 8 months preggers. It turned out that it has slipped and twisted inside me. What upset me the most is that my Dr. didn't catch that in any of the test we did, including an upper endoscopy. In any case my baby is now 10 months old and though initially I ate like a fiend when the lap band was out and I could finally eat solids, (and I was at the end of my pregnancy), I lost the baby weight pretty quickly. BUT THEN... When I went back to work the stress and pressure of managing it all just got to me and I snapped back into my emotional eating habits. When I think about it now, I also realize that the whole time the lap band was twisted and slipped and I couldn't keep solids down I lost all my good eating habits because I would eat more unhealthy liquids (i.e. ice cream, creamy Soups, juices) just because that is all I could eat. In Feb. I went back to my surgeon and said I wanted to talk about options because I was starting to gain (and did gain by the time I had the Sleeve surgery almost 50lbs of the 110lbs I had lost. I was devastated, couldn't get things under control, and wanted to figure out how I could stop the downward spiral. That appointment led to a "revision", which did not happen in one surgery, essentialy that is what the second surgery was. I can't believe I'm here all over again! The first few weeks really are rough since I do not like sweet shakes and that is pretty much all I can have. BUT, I am grateful that I was able to find another solutions and get back on track. Also, what is great is that after the lap band it was a crappy, long recovery for me, mostly because they gave me Percocet for pain and it turned out I was very allergic to it but we didn't realize that it was causing me chest pain, shortness of breath, etc. Can you imagine that first week when all the gasses they pump in are killing you and chest pain/inability to breath/rash on top of that... This time around at a week out I feel like a different person! I am grateful for my journey and everything it taught me, but it sure was a roller coaster. Thanks for reading my story. Jo
  15. Does anyone have Cigna that went from the band to the sleeve? If so, how long did the approval take and what was your BMI? I'm worried because I gained most of my weight back but I don't have any medical issues like diabetes or high blood pressure and my BMI is a 39.1 instead of the 40 requirement. My surgeon want to do the revision - we are getting ready to submit the paperwork.

    Bypass to band

I have a feeling that your situation is unusual. Revision seems most often from band to sleeve or bypass. A few years back, however, I met someone who did what you did. Whether the band is diminishing your appetite yet, are you eating properly to lose weight? The band isn't magical. We're still the ones who do the work. As you found with bypass, regain is possible with any of the surgeries. Has anyone taken time to be sure you understand that it can take several adjustments before the band becomes a working partner? The amount of saline in a band is irrelevant. The only thing that matters is having the amount that works for the particular individual. It's also true that even after a band is optimally adjusted, all can change. The band was long known as "the fickle bittch" for that reason. I can't say "don't be discouraged" because you already are. How about "look at it with renewed determination?" P.S. There's a brand new forum for people who have regained weight. You may want to take a look. I'll see if I can find a link for you and will be right back. Here it is. The forum is set up for any number of topics, but right now, this is it I think. There are other topics announcing the new forum, but they are not part of the forum. (I think.) http://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/376815-wow-i-am-so-humbled/

    Band to Sleeve with Cigna

I was approved for my revision (not Cigna but Health Alliance) because I have to have a couple of Unfills for too tight. They presented that as a slight prolapse, although never bad at all. Was approved in 2 days. Maybe an option?
  18. How are you doing? I am set for revision from band to sleeve on Oct. 20.
  19. So I had the lap band done in February of 2010. For the past 3 years I have been miserable. Couldn't sleep laying down, horrible reflux, vomiting every day. I finally made the decision to get the band removed and revised to the sleeve. I'm nervous though. I don't want to go back to the feeling I had with the band. My surgery is October 9th. Any words of encouragement?

  21. i am four days postop now from having the sleeve portion of my revision. My doc does the two (removal of the band and then doing the sleeve) in two separate surgeries. Because my surgeon saw my liver when removing my band, I didn't have to do a pre-op diet, so that was nice. I too was struggling with having to do that again. But my loss from the band was good and my liver was small. I can tell you the recovery from this surgery is much much harder than the band was. More pain. Less energy. Stricter diet. But I feel a little better every day. Since I am so fresh from the OR, you may want to read other threads of a similar nature posted here to get more info. Good luck!
  22. I just had the revision from sleeve to bypass for severe GERD on Jan 10th. They also found my stomach in my chest cavity with a huge hernia they did not see after a year of tests. So far so good but I am on a meds for 6 months post op, then I can go off of them
  23. Thanks, gabybab! I'm trying to keep my chin up!! I just read that 1/3 of patients with marginal ulcers and stricture need to have a revision to the RNY to re-do the connection. I really don't want another surgery!! Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app
