    Trying not to give up.

I can totally understand being discouraged. I was banded in April 2009 and I have a 9cc in a 14cc band. I haven't been on this site in a while because I feel like such a failure. Along with the medical conditions that lead me to the LB, I am also peri-menopausal. I crave carbs, I can go a couple of days without them then BAM, they come back. I really want to commend those of you who seem to have gotten a handle on this thing. Thank God I don't drink alcohol. I'm going to try and increase my protein, because I don't think that I'm getting enough. This is harder than I thought it would be.
  2. If we are going to look at this surgery in "perfect world" terms, of course we would not drink. Unfortunately most of us don't live in the perfect world. I was a beer drinker before surgery and was told that was a definite "no no" SO I have given it up. On the occasion that I do go out I do have a vodka and cranberry or two. I have not felt any real difference in the way the alcohol affects me. My biggest concern about drinking is the potential loss of my good judgement and that is why I don't drink often or a lot. I socialize with several close friends and I would feel so "left out" if I didn't allow myself a drink or two every once in awhile. One of my big conversations with my nutrtionist before surgery is what I would drink for alcohol after the surgery! She was helping me figure out what to substitute for the beer. Now, she was not encouraging me to drink but she understood that we can't change everything. I do understand that some people substitute the alcohol for the food addiction and that should be a big concern for everyone. We need to make sure we don't substitute one addiction (food) for another, alcohol, shopping, gambling, etc, WIth that said have a drink in moderation and enjoy!
  3. Really? You can't get over it? LOL Look, at 4 weeks postop, there's little to no restriction. There just AREN'T the brakes yet in place. It's the time when we should be focusing on adopting healthier new habits---which, sure, will be breached from time to time. The time to breach those new habits is once they are firmly in place---not right out of the starting gate. Yes, life will involve veering off plan occasionally. Often deliberately, and usually with absolutely no adverse consequence. But why NOT take advantage of this time to master the learning curve. After you've got it down, THEN you can play around a little. Really--is a drink all that important? So important that you "can't get over" the advice not to drink so early in the game? Because if that's the case, you may well be one of the ones posting, in a year, that you just can't get over how you've only lost 10 pounds since you were banded. Re: absorption of alcohol. Our stomach capacities are smaller. Alcohol will therefore take the place of other foods and fluids our bodies need. It's dehydrating, so it's important to alternate it with nonalcoholic Fluid, and to put the brakes on early so that you can give your BODY what it NEEDS--not your MIND what it WANTS. And no, the enhanced intoxication isn't psychological. Tolerance is reduced when intake is so low.
  4. Hi We all had the last supper in the hotel so yes a nice meal on your last night is fine and maybe one drink but I decided to abstain from the alcohol didn't want to take any chances but like I say one I shouldn't think would do any harm but nothing no food no drink of any kind after midnight day befor surgery.

    issues with alcohol after surgery

Addiction-wise, you've shown very fast symptom substitution---most of us do white-knuckle it quite a bit early on, but avoid turning to alternate destructive behaviors. It really concerns me that you've swapped out addictions so quickly. Was the psych you saw for preop evaluation worth his/her salt? I would get into a professional ASAP to nip this in the bud. There are healthy behaviors you can substitute for the destructive--no need to replace overeating with alcoholism. AA would be a great corollary--but I really think that seeing someone who has good experience dealing with the cross-addictions that can occur as a response to bariatric surgery would be a REALLY good idea

    Alcohol??????????

Good for you and Good Luck to you. As I stated in my above quote, it is only my personal opinion and I actually was writing to the thread starter. As I stated in my quote also, not partaking of these things was my decision for my personal journey. I was attempting to show that there are other opinions and other ways to do things for people at the beginning of their journey. A psychologist runs our local support group who is also banded. He chooses to lose weight at a much slower pace and eat whatever he wants just less of it. It is what makes the world go round. He isn't wrong and I am not wrong. We are just choosing to move through our journey at a different pace. I also did not make the statement that if you enjoy alcohol you won't be ready for surgery. What I said was if you are consuming calories and carbonation, you may not be ready. I have seen it so many many times on this forum people who get banded and find out that they were not emotionally ready for it due to eating issues. It is a way of life change not just a miracle cure.

    Alcohol??????????

Just my PERSONAL opinion but a life with out alcohol is NO life! I had one glass of champagne on my pre surgery diet to toast the New Year at mid night and my liver was fine for surgery. Wednesday will be two weeks from my surgery and I celebrated the end of of surviving my first week back at work (working over 60 hours) with 3 glasses of wine on Saturday. I was down 11 lbs at the dr visit today. could I have been down 12 if I had cut out 270 calories of wine...maybe, but the point is, it wasn't worth it to ME. I have been overweight my entire life and if it takes me 4 years to get to my goal weight that is fine with me. Just because I enjoy alcohol does not mean I am not ready for this surgery. I might not ever get to a size 6 but if I can loose 20 more lbs and keep it off longer than two seconds that will be a miracle as far as I am concerned.

    issues with alcohol after surgery

Well from my WW days I know that Alcohol slowed my loss because it makes you retain a lot of Water and is a gateway to food drug. I have 1 drink and I think.... wow those fries wont hurt me... I will just have 5. 33 later I and on my 2nd drink. LOL. So I am abstaining until my vacation in the spring so I can look HOT when I go home to CA to visit family.

    issues with alcohol after surgery

I never thought about it Steelergirl but I have heard in the past that it is carbs so I guess that would hender the weight loss even more. Everything I eat is low/no carb. I know what it does to me to include it. So it would make sense that alcohol would be the same. Thanks! As far as needing help, that's why I was asking here b/c I never needed alcohol before surgery. I would drink often but not addicted or anything. Now that I have no food to rely on I think I needed a cruch. I mainly wanted to see if this has happened to anyone else.

food for thought... To all of you having the "Same Issues" Have you tried going to an AA meeting? I know nobody wants to use the label Alcoholic but if you are experiencing withdrawls and NEED it? Um... I think you need to get some kind of outside support for this. Didnt mean to offend.

    "trial liquid diet"

I know, I know, but I was so thrilled to have something, anything that was real food I didn't dare question it. My instructions just said pickles so had every type imaginable, I did fine bread and butter made with splenda which turned out to be my favorite. I'm fairly sure the folks at Kroger thought I was pregnant with triplets by the vast amounts of pickles I was purchasing....I also decided that if I could have pickles why couldn't I have cucumbers....soooo...I stretched that a little. As far as the caffeine, I don't know, I haven't noticed anyone else on here saying anything about it. I have a very conservative doctor who also says no alcohol ever so I'm guessing he just looks at caffeine as not great for you therefore you should give it up. I've never been big on caffeine so that hasn't been an issue.... It is a diuretic so immediately post op when you're forcing the fluids to keep from getting dehydrated I can see why they'd want you to avoid it, after that I really have no explanation!:cursing:

    Alcohol??????????

If your doctor doesn't have you on a pre-op diet that excludes it, then go ahead and enjoy! My doctor did not have any rules regarding cutting out alcohol before surgery.

    did you know....

I agree with Tiff. I read a lot of research articles today and the major risk factors mentioned are: cigarette smoking high body mass index helobacter pylori gastric ulcers alcohol frequent red meat intake, especially bbq well done retinol intake hiatal hernia I figure my risk has gone way down due to this surgery because I'll lose the obesity, my hiatal hernia was repaired during the VSG, and I don't have the other risk factors. Yippee.

    Alcohol??????????

Yes, you can. I had some wine has night. Main thing to consider is alcohol has no nutritional value, just empty calories. Beer is carbonated which some surgeons forbid. I find it sometimes goes down OK, sometimes not, and sometimes gives me the hiccups. But alcohol has no detrimental effect on the band.

    Protein Bars

My favorite are Supreme Protein bars (the Peanut Butter and the caramel nut are my favorites). They are about 200 calories I think and have a small amount of sugar (some sugar alcohols). My nutritionist approved them. I have them for breakfast when I'm loose enough, along with a yogurt mixed with a little fruit - other mornings I need to do a smoothie. These have a great taste - not the taste a lot of Protein Bars have. The peanut butter is my top choice, easier to chew than the caramel nut some days. I live in the Midwest and get these from my local grocery store, Hy-Vee. HTH!
  17. Your forgiven, even for suggesting I might need help with alcoholism. Even though you kinda forgot about that one. But thats ok. I am an easy going type person. Not just a braggart about alcohol. LOL:wink:
  18. AH! I thought, like the rest of us, you were here to give advice, not just brag on your alcohol consumption! Apologies! As long as you are just "sharing" and not implying that it's ok for the OP, at 4 weeks, to drink what s/he wants, then forgive me for misunderstanding!
  19. Well, I still drink. Mostly martinis (Cosmopolitans, blueberry martini, pomegranite martini, you name it). So far it is working for me. If things start to not work, then I will reexamine what I am doing. One of the things no one has touched on yet is swapping vices. Being forced to give up food, you can easily swap for alcohol or other behaviors. Just be cautious. Oh and Spartan, how completely petty and small of you. The whole idea that you are going to follow someones posts in order to gloat at their failure should be enough to let you know you got some more work to do on yourself. You might be at goal, but you got some issues.

    Alcohol??????????

I had a two week pre-op diet that I had to follow. So could not have alcohol during that time. Otherwise, prior to that I was on my normal diet. I don't recall anything specific about alcohol prior to surgery. If you want to be sure, call your surgeon's office and ask. And for what it's worth, I disagree with Last Meal Syndrome. You will be able to eat your favorite foods again, just not in the same proportions.

    Alcohol??????????

Every doctor is different, mine says no alcohol 2 weeks before surgery. I also have a 12 day pre-op diet before surgery, so the previous poster's rules wouldn't apply to me, either. Check with your doctor.

    issues with alcohol after surgery

Something else I want to mention...(non-professional My body hates alcohol. I love it, but my body doesn't use it as just calories taking in. I could have 3 measured drinks and count calories and it would stall my lose or even make me gain. This has been true for the last 25 yrs for me and I know it has something to do with the way my body processes the sugar in alcohol. I can have 2 glasses of wine, literally 4 oz each and my weight is higher for at least 48 hours after. I get puffy and retain fluid. My body just doesn't do well with alcohol in my diet. Every time I have successfully lost weight I have excluded alcohol all together. And when I start to drink again, I start to gain again. I want to mention that I am not a regular drinker. Maybe 1-2 times a month....Just some food for thought
  23. LOL I love the title of your post. YES, you can have a freakin drink for sure!!! It will not hurt your band and your stomach will process it the same as it did pre-band. Those that say that it goes to their head faster... that can be explained just by the fact that taking in fewer calories (like being on any diet), you will get tipsy/drunk faster because you have less food in your stomach. Of course, it is high in calories, and they are empty calories so you gotta watch that aspect of it (just like you would on a diet). And, just like someone who loves Cookies and has one or two as a treat, that is fine if you can really stop at one or two. If you gotta eat the whole bag once you get started, then you are surely better off just giving it up. I think its great that you are already thinking about doing extra exercise to make up for it. Also, make sure to drink extra Water (since alcohol is dehydrating).
  24. I find alcohol affects me more of less depending on what i eat during the day. I drink wine and hard liquors but all only in small amount. If I drink too fast I feel sick and not drunk and it is not a fun time. Usually 2 glasses of wine leave me as a write off. There are different drinks that sometimes I can and can not handle. Vodka I can't seem to manage but whiskey, gin and rum are ok. I rarely drink these those. Just remember to drink slowly because it takes a while for the drink to go through your band. The last thing you want to do is drink too much and then have to throw up and can't because of the band ( trust me NOT pleasant) I used to be able to out drink everyone now I won't even try and always stop after 2 drinks. If I eat too much during the day and then go drinking I don't get as drunk as fast. Remember to drink even more Water as it makes you more dehydrated. Now I drink my whiskey with water instead of coke and add some ice. It sounds gross but it isn't that bad.

    issues with alcohol after surgery

I've been making deals with myself to help me through. I can drink today if I don't tomorrow etc.. Also, I have been cutting back a little at the time on how much I allow myself. I added an app on my ipod touch that is from myfitnesspal.com and I have been putting in everything I consume. It helps to see how many calories the alcohol uses up.
