@@tcon I originally was thinking the sleeve but based on my BMI was over 50, extremely high triglyceride levels, high cholesterol and sleep apena the SADI would provide me the quickest route to lowering my triglycerides. The practice I used no longer performs LapBand because of the long term failures leading to revision, they still perform RNY (in some cases) but VSG and SADI (they don't do the full DS) are the most common procedures. I liked the idea of less time under anesthesia and a better recovery. I was under for about 3 hours, it was performed laproscopiclly using the DiVinci Robot. I have no acid reflux, but I was never prone to it or GERD prior to the surgery. I've really only had the the same problems that just about everyone experiences. Mild depression, trouble getting in Protein and Water at first. I did discover pork roast does not sit well (TMI about 2 hours later I had severe gas cramps). Other than that I've been able to handle all the other foods I've tried so far (seafood, chicken, ground beef, ground turkey, deli meat/cheese, yogurt). About 2 weeks ago I did start to get an aversion to my premier Protein drinks and most others. I think it is more a head issue now. It turned my stomach the first time so I think every time I've had them since my brain is remembering feeling nauseated and causing me to feel nauseous. I have never thrown up since my surgery, although I have had episodes of nausea. The first day I was allowed soft foods I was craving crab legs. They were delicious and evidently I didn't know when to stop and ate past my full point...yep it didn't feel good for about an hour or more. More TMI: I haven't experienced any of the yucky stuff (diarrhea or excessive gas). Yes, I've had gas but not anymore than normal, I have very regular BMs usually once in the morning and sometimes one in the evening. My doctor said gas and diarrhea mainly come from consuming too much carbs and fats. He recommends sticking to no more than 40 grams/day of each and to make sure to get the 80-100 grams of protein/day. Recovery: I took three weeks off of work, but could have been back in two. I really had no pain,I was well covered in the hospital and I took my tylenol with codine the first couple of days I was home just to help me sleep. I alternated sleeping in bed propped up on a wedge pillow and on the recliner. I'm a side/stomach sleeper and it wasn't until around 3.5 weeks that I was comfortable on my side. Tiredness: I was tired especially during the first three weeks. Sleep is very important for the healing process so I did take naps and went to bed "early" for me. I'm normally a bed around midnight up at six person, but I would go to bed around 9 for a few weeks. Once I got back to work the daytime tiredness seemed to fade away. I think staying busy made all the difference. I was tired by the end of the week when I got home and did an early bed time. I just started my 3rd week back at work and all has been great. I also walked around EPCOT with my husband at 2 weeks post surgery (that kinda pushed it and took it out of me, but the change of scenery was nice). Last week (5 weeks post op) I spent the entire day with my family (including my 2 year old son) at the Kennedy Space Center walking around. I did fine and felt great.

    No Pre-Op Diet?

me too! Just clear liquids day before. My surgery (revision) date is May 27th. "Band to Sleeve"
  9. CowgirlJane

4 weeks post and I still PB

My surgeon was very conservative for band to sleeve revision patients the intro to solid food was 2 weeks slower than his normal protocol. I think you might be doing too much or too fast or the wrong foods too early. It is NOT normal to vomit with the sleeve. The only times I have is when I wolfed food down too fast. Seriously consider calling your surgeon as this is not normal.

Need To Hear From The Veterans

If you had been banded chances are you would have lost some but not all your weight or perhaps none at all as the band is hard to perfectly adjust and most people find they are not crazy about the new feelings that come from being banded. If you were banded you would never feel "full" you would stop eating when the pain in your chest/shoulder or back told you too. If you were banded you would have many foods that refused to go through the band and you thew them up instead. If you were banded chances are you would have reflux from food being stuck in your pouch. You may spend countless nights sitting up because laying was too painful because you ate something within 3 hours of going to bed. Your band could embed deep into your stomach or perhaps decide to fuse to your liver. If you were banded food you ate yesterday with no problem may cause you pain and suffering today. AND I say all this as someone who loved my band, and lost all my weight !! But I know it's not a good option for anyone. If you were banded you would at some point need a revision. All WLS is a gamble, none is without consequences.

    Disappointed

Look, no magic here. You've put on weight because you are taking ion more calories than you burn...THE TRUTH. Exercise every day, eat healthier, eat less...FACT. You at least have the tool of the surgery which absorbs less of what you eat and less true stomach hunger. Two months out after revision is nothing, keep on a diet, keep working out.

    Disappointed

So I had the gastric bypass 10 years ago and it was a success. But two babies and health issues later I had gained about 80 pounds back. February 21st I had to have surgery again (basically a revision but due to disease they had to actually remove a foot and a half of my small intestine and about 70% of my stomach out of my body) I've was 270 the day of surgery. I'm at 243 and have been here for the last month. I exercise, get my protein and water and do everything I'm supposed to. I didn't actually have the surgery to lose weight again; I had to have it because of being in and out of the hospital for internal bleeding and ulcers. But since I did have to have it I'm getting frustrated that the weight isn't coming off.
  13. Great to hear about easy recoveries. I dont have a surgery date yet and not sure yet if I'll have to have one or two procedures for my revision from band to bypass. Hope it's one though.
  14. My recovery from revision surgery was very easy. I was I was 45 when I got the band - 52 for revision. It was done in 1 surgery and I did not have the gas pain like I did with the band surgery. I was expecting the recovery to be long & painful and was pleasantly surprised how easy it was

    Confused

Update: my band had slipped so far that my entire stomach had herniated through it. I had emergency surgery to reposition it, but the scar tissue was too much so they removed it. I regained about 140 lbs in the four years after that and just got a sleeve revision last week.
  16. hockeydog

    Discouraged, not losing!

I COMPLETELY get your frustration, BUT the experienced folk here are right. I have had what I think is slow weight loss, and I never had the initial dump of weight immediately post op or with the pre-op diet. I have lost a pretty steady 1-2 lbs per week since the get-go (with a stall of 2 weeks as well). And this is with carefully tracking of intake and exercise. I was terrified to fail at this again (as I am a revision from band to sleeve). That fear fueled my anxiety and frustration, but never helped with weight loss. I was told by someone on here, in no uncertain terms, to congratulate myself on my success (YES, SUCCESS!) thus far and keep up the work, and it will all even out in the end (and basically, to adjust my attitude ) It was a hard pill to swallow, particularly since I was expecting more weekly loss, and never experienced that dramatic loss initially. But, I have accepted what IS. I'm still better off than I was in mid February before my surgery (at 30 lbs down), I feel better, and I think I look better, and that is keeping me motivated. The absolute worse thing you can do for your motivation and emotional state is to wonder why your path isn't like someone else's. THAT is a recipe for anxiety. I know I'm early in my journey, and believe me, have shed tears and had fits about what I thought should be, but isn't. But I have come to accept that all lost lbs/inches contribute to my health and are SUCCESSES. Please save yourself the stress and go with the flow. The fact that you are being diligent and following the rules are only going to work in your favor over the long term. We are always here for you, to cheer you on, and celebrate with you.
  17. meyouus

    I got a date!

I know we'll all do great. As long as we follow the rules and question, question, question we should be fine. My surgeon has only put me on the liquid diet the day before surgery. Maybe, just maybe cuz I've lost 37 lbs since I first went in to tell them I want the revision. IDK.
  18. I had planned to go to DR Oscar Rafael Gastelum in July. Now insurance bouncing around to do sleeve revision to bypass thanks to Dr Quinones. He created a hernia at the top of my stomach. Dr Gastelum I'll see you when this is fixed:)
  19. He made the stupidest error with my Sleeve. Now I need revision to bypass. Thanks a lot to Dr Quinones pos!!!!
  20. You definitely need to get on line and do your research then work with the surgeon to determine the best solution for your specific health issues. For example, do you suffer from reflux or Gerd? If you do, the sleeve and lap band can make this worse requiring a revision to bypass down the road. Even if you never had reflux these surgeries can cause it. It does not happen to everyone but so many people on this site and others have had this issue and then have to get a revision to bypass anyway. If you are looking to only go down this road one time, then research and work with your specific surgeon to understand the best solution for you.

    Surgery date - finally

Hey there! I am also a patient of Dr. Nick. My surgery is scheduled for June! I am actually a revision patient as I had a band that slipped and had to be removed, now I'm going to be a sleeved!! I am a ball of emotions! Dreading the pre and post op diets but it's all so worth it!! Congrats on your surgery date!
  22. ren0318

    Disappointed

I had the sleeve in Sept 2014....I was a lower BMI'er when I started but I have lost hardly no weight, even gained 5 pounds....I'm hungry all the time and I have zero restriction(I know I need to have some willpower, but I don't have willpower and that was the main reason I wanted this tool to help me).....I take in plenty of Protein and I'm exercising.....Met with my Dr. two weeks ago....she said we'll give it six months and then talk about revision.......I have diabetes and that was my main reason for having the surgery in the first place.....I was scared to have the bypass.....I guess I should have sucked it up and went for it!
  23. I'm 6.5 weeks in, 8.5 if you count pre-op diet, and i hit 50 lbs today. I did the sleeve because it is less invasive than bypass. Also i knew that if this didn't work, revisions are covered under insurance. So far I'm loving it. It's been both the hardest thing I've ever done, and the easiest. Hardest because coming to the point i knew i couldn't do it on my own was really difficult, then that pesky pre op diet, then the actual surgery recovery was hard for me. It's also the easiest because now, I'm not hungry and i love that. It's so much easier to make better choices now. I'm not craving carbs. It's been the best thing I've done. I'm starting to fit into smaller clothes. Last weekend i went to s texas rangers game... and fit in the seat! My confidence is growing every day. But you cannot look at it as a magic solution. It's making good choices every day. Good luck!
  24. redbean414

    Very excited!

I am in the exact same situation. Had the band for 9 years. Just met with a new surgeon who told me he takes out about 5 a month. He won't even put them in. I'm waiting on insurance now. Hopefully will be able to get this out SOON, and do a revision. I can't decide between the sleeve or bypass . I also thought I was the only one!

    Moving on to Solids!

I had a lap band to sleeve revision on April 16. I started eating solid food at 14 days. I started with salmon and green Beans. Then had mahi mahi with some slaw mix. I have had no problems as of yet. I have had chicken, tuna, turkey. Have not had ground beef yet, but going to try that this weekend. For Breakfast scrambled egg with sautéed veggies (zucchini, onion, mushrooms - cooked well), grits, steel cut oats, strawberries, blueberries and raspberries … the raspberries did create some acid for me … and strawberries today so we will see. I think my stomach healed much faster than most because I used Bone broth in my liquid diet. Bone Broth has 9 grams of Protein in each 8 oz. serving and the purpose of bone broth is to heal the gut (if you have gut issues) … so since I mostly eat a Paleo diet 85/15 … I cook and use that a lot and I really think my stomach was fine at 10 day! I have lost 13 lbs. in 3 weeks and I am ok with that! All I can say is that I can eat again. I had so much trouble with the lap band that I threw up almost everything I ate! It was depressing. How I can eat healthy again! Also … looking forward to my first salad … maybe this weekend!
