    April 2022 Surgery Buddies

I spent a lot of time today looking for the vitamins I will be taking after the surgery. I was reading the packet I got from my surgeon and there was a lot of details I needed to go over to make those decisions. I had started a vitamin regimen based on some YouTube videos I watched, but after getting into the nitty gritty of it I realized I was going to need much higher dosages than what was recommended. It took me some time to balance out what I needed for the amount of money it will cost me every month. As I was doing this it made me feel much better about the care I am going to give myself after the surgery which greatly reduced any anxieties I was having. I’ve got about 3 weeks to go (My surgery is April 4th) and I’m planning on concentrating on preparing for my post-op needs.
  2. After years of consideration I am going to gave gastric bypass surgery. I have a great doctor and will discuss this with her in a few weeks. I have very good insurance and the freedom to choose from a wide variety of surgeons. I am grateful. Is anyone from the San Diego area who can give a recommendation on a bariatric surgeon? I know my doctor will have info but I’d really love to hear from GP patients as well. Thanks

    Excess skin after WLS

Ok: obligatory response to the oft-asked question/concern about excess skin: Basically what @Arabesque said above and that you will know how weight loss affects u when u know. There is no real way to guarantee no excess skin other than NOT losing weight…and im sure thats not an option, right? With that said, here was my experience I started off at 235 with a BMI of 43…yep im short. (223 on surgery day). I was healthy/normal sized until about age 30, at which point i steadily gained weight until i got to morbid obesity by the time i got into my 40s. I had surgery when I was 47. I lost my weight relatively quickly, getting down to 127 in 7 months. I lost a few more lbs over the next couple months as settled into maintenance. Ive hovered around 115 (give or take 5 lbs) ever since. This morning i was 118.8 And yep, I had excess skin. But it was literally just that…skin. I had very little fat tissue underneath so I didn’t look so much rolly, than it did crepey/lumpy …it looked crumply-bedsheet-looking. I did get the skin removed when i was 14 months post op via tummy tuck, arm lift and breast lift. As i had very little actual fat, the total weight removed from my body was a measly 400g. To those around me not really paying attention (which was probably almost everyone) the difference before and after PS was not very dramatic, if they noticed anything at all. It just looked like i toned up a little. I felt awesome in a bikini after plastics. But honestly, i felt awesome in that same bikini BEFORE plastics. But don’t get me wrong, i am super pleased i got it done and would do it all again 10 times out of 10. You may find you are quite happy/satisfied with your body after weight loss excess skin or not. Or you can go the plastics route. I’ve seen plastics results on here that are jaw dropping. But thats still a ways down the road for you. Your time and energies are probably better expensed on getting the weight off and changing and adapting to a new lifestyle. Good Luck! ❤️ P.S. For a visual, here is my progress pic covering the first 3 years (im 3.5 post today). You can see the skin situation with and without clothes on the top two rows. The bottom row is after PS.
  4. My classmate had his hernia on his navel operated on. And he then refrained from using CBD oil two weeks before the operation. He wasn't sure that the use of cannabis was prohibited before the operation in which he'd be given general anesthesia. He just stopped using it just in case it didn't cause any complications. Best Oklahoma dispensaries where he buys CBD oil supplies products to many people. I think good pharmacists are working in this company. So you can ask them a question on the hotline if you're very interested or worried about it! Good luck. I hope everything will be fine.
  5. I am a year out so I eat more at a time than I did when I was three months out but I eat on the same schedule. I eat breakfast at 9, lunch at 12, snack at 3, dinner at 6 And snack at 9. That way I am eating every three hours. And yes i do feel hungry in between but usually I am able to wait the hour and a half or whatever since I know what time I will be eating next.
  6. I had no energy issues after about 3 weeks post-VSG. Have fun!

I’m 6 weeks from surgery and the wait is killing me! I decided to start lifting weights 🏋️‍♀️ so that I can start the healthy lifestyle process now.
  8. I wouldn’t have had any issues at 3 months out with energy or otherwise. It may take a little planning to get what you need to eat though overseas.

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

That is exactly what it is. Just wish it would go away! each day is better than the last so I feel good about that. Today I think I ate my cream of wheat too fast, I was miserable for about 2-3 hours after eating it. I had the same thing in the hospital and did not experience the same thing but I mixed protein with the milk to make it and I think that was just too much. Anyways, lesson learned. go slow!
  10. Hi all. I'm scheduled for VGS early May and have an overseas trip planned for end of July (11 weeks later). I'm concerned about my energy level, etc. Anyone care to share your 3 month post op travel experiences? Thanks in advance
  11. Wow. these pics and the info I'm learning about others' eating habits are quite educational, but this is also so frustrating for me!!! Everyone talks about how full they get... why don't I get full?????? Why can I eat a normal portion and no one else can? Isn't my stomach supposed to be miniscule??? You'd think I was this mega eater and weighed in at 500 lbs prior, but totally not. I was 220 before my pre-op diet, 210 at surgery (sleeve), and 200 a week later. and... drumroll... that's where I remain, 5 weeks later. I'm trying to be very careful with what I eat and I purposely give myself smaller portions, but even if I'm eating lean meats (chicken, tuna) and vegetables, I'm not getting full after 5 bites like every one else. I can't understand it. I should not be able to hold more than a 1/2 cup of food, right? It's a mystery to me (a REALLY frustrating one!).

Oh wow. I hate that you went thru that. I'm glad I'm choosing to take off 2 weeks instead of just one.

    7 weeks post surgery

I am 6 weeks post surgery and have struggled as well. Eating period has been difficult for me and I figured it was a result of my hiatal hernia repair. I am not able to eat much at all and have had a hard time with transitioning through the stages. I have not been able to successfully handle anything aside from yogurt, jello, soup, pudding or applesauce. People have suggested maybe it is dairy, maybe I am eating foods with too much acidity, eating too fast, etc. But Caloric intake was never discussed. I believe as long as you are getting your Protein and Liquid intake, you should be fine. Kay_G_B
  15. Hi , I am 7 weeks post surgery . The surgeon found I had a hiatus hernia which he fixed along with tightening the muscle . One day after surgery I got oesophageal spasms which was extremely painful so they knocked me out by a drip for 4 days until they got it under control. My sleeve seems to be successful but am often still have feelings of faintness , and tiredness. also am wondering if someone can share what and how much they eat during the day . I think I am only getting 400 to 500 calories . I am also suffering from head hunger at night and am nibbling at cashews to try and satisfy it . The weight loss has been good and to have loss this much weight without the sleeve would have been torture and been less than half the weight loss . I don’t regret doing this but sometimes feel it is quite hard .
  16. 1. What does everyone experience when they say "i cant do (insert food here)".. how do you know when you cant tolerate a food? I ask because a few people I talked to always just say "i felt like i was dying" and that TERRIFIED me so now im so nervous to even eat a darn thing. -Try to relax and just try one new food at a time, slowly, as your plan dictates I didn’t have any foods that didn’t agree with me I can eat anything I ate pre surgery 2. my sheet says to do 3 meals a day but I can add a snack. How long between meals and when do I do the snack? -I have two snacks a day and I eat at 9-12-3-6-9 (breakfast at 9, lunch at 12, snack at 3, dinner at 6 and snack at 9) that way I am eating every 3 hours. This has worked for me but you will have to tweak it to fit your lifestyle and how many snacks you do 3. Why am I so hungry and is there anything I can do to curb my appetite? I want to eat more mashed potatoes but I am only allowed 2 tsp a meal which is so small lol. -Some people say that warm tea helps them with the hunger. I didn’t have real hunger, just head hunger and that you just have to try to ignore. You can tell the difference because real hunger you could eat anything. You are just starving while head hunger you usually crave something specific. More time than not it something you really shouldn’t be eating.

    My experience… sleeved on 1/22/22

Hey all- sorry I have been MIA. I’m not gonna lie- I went to a dark place. This thread seemed to change from me well us sharing our experiences post sleeve to people complaining about the financial side or honesty telling me I was wrong and other pointed comments in my inbox. So I took a break. But there were quite a few of you who are so supportive and I’m sorry I ghosted. Here’s my update I’m almost two months (roughly a week shy of 2 months) out and down a total of 36 pounds. I go to the gym 3-5 times a week and do quite a bit of weight lifting and cardio. I feel so much better. I’m down two pant sizes which is fantastic. Lately I’ve been having odd soreness in my lower back and shoulders so I contacted my nurse- she thought it was that my body was still holding it’s self like I had those 36 pounds still. She recommended I get a massage- hey doctors orders I’m not gonna say no to a little pampering. But honestly it worked. No longer am I sore in odd places. I hope you all are doing well on your journey and remember every body is different with the loss. Listen to yours and your care team.

new here and have a few questions

When I had my Lap Band, foods would get stuck. That's how I knew I couldn't tolerate a food. I'm pre op for RNY so I can't really answer from an RNY standpoint yet. I was told a meal should last 3 to 4 hours. That was solid foods. It's going to be harder when you're on liquids because they offer very little satiety. As for why you're hungry now, I'll let those with RNY surgery answer that, I have zero personal experience yet. But I do know when I had my Lap Band I never felt satiety until I could eat solid protein, like chicken. But RNY could be different. Soon the RNY veterans should be chiming in on these topics. I wish you the best on your journey.
  19. I had my surgery last thurs (mar 3) and today I started "week 2" of the diet my doctor gave me. This consists of all the liquids of week 1 plus low sugar oatmeal, yogurt, applesauce and mashed potatoes. I just have a few questions: 1. What does everyone experience when they say "i cant do (insert food here)".. how do you know when you cant tolerate a food? I ask because a few people I talked to always just say "i felt like i was dying" and that TERRIFIED me so now im so nervous to even eat a darn thing. 2. my sheet says to do 3 meals a day but I can add a snack. How long between meals and when do I do the snack? 3. Why am I so hungry and is there anything I can do to curb my appetite? I want to eat more mashed potatoes but I am only allowed 2 tsp a meal which is so small lol thanks in advance everyone!

    Dreaded hair loss - question

It is massively variable from person to person. My hair started thinning right at the 3 month post-op mark. I'm almost 6 months out now and it has slowed down some, but definitely has not stopped. I don't have any bald spots, but the thinning is VERY noticeable to me, but my family says its not visible to them. You can't control it, you can only do your very best to take care of yourself, heal well, and make sure you get adequate nutrition to prevent nutritional hair loss on top of the telogen effluvium.

Good luck, you can do this! My liquid diet starts on the 21st. I’ve been trying to ease my way into it. Making small changes and reducing my calorie intake each week before it starts. That way it’s not such a shock to my system. I wouldn’t want to do the actual diet for more than 2 weeks though. That is going to be so hard in itself. Looking forward to hearing how you do. My surgery is just a few days after yours.
  22. Hey! I'm gearing up for my soft food stage next week and thinking about protein sources. I get most of my protein through shakes right now in pureed stage but I also eat eggs and beans. I've been a vegetarian for 7 years now and don't plan on eating meat again. Has anyone tried these foods on soft? -Steamed tofu (not crispy or hard) -vegetarian deli meat slices -vegetarian ground beef, finely chopped up And can you think of anything else that might be okay on soft food? 23. I was sleeved in 2015 and just went through the revision from sleeve to bypass about 3 1/2 weeks ago. So as I'm still in recovery mode I can't really provide a full answer all of your questions. 1. Reason for conversion: I developed a hiatal hernia where part of the sleeve had slipped up through the opening of the diaphragm into the chest cavity, which was causing chest discomfort and only allowing me to eat a couple ounces of food at a meal. After doing an EGD my surgeon was concerned enough to schedule my revision within a week. He said if they just fixed the hernia there was a high likelihood it would recur with the sleeve. If he converted to bypass he said there was a very low likelihood I'd have any further problems. I also had GERD issues from the sleeve which I wanted to address. 2. Post-op period: I'd say for me it was essentially the same. I had the same surgeon and facility which were both great. Recovery plan is the same for both surgeries (clear liquid, full liquid, puree, soft solids, etc.) I had a bit more pain with the bypass but I'm 7 years older than when I had the sleeve. 3. Best and worst part: Can't really answer this yet, except to say it's nice to lose some additional weight (I never hit my goal with the sleeve) but it's tough to have to start over with the recovery. 4. Dumping: Haven't experienced it yet, but I am just up to about 2 to 2.5 oz of soft protein so I have not been able to even try anything that might cause dumping. My thought on the revision is if you are experiencing significant GERD it is definitely worth considering. GERD can cause Barret's esophagus and ultimately lead to esophageal cancer if not kept in check. Having had a relative who died of that cancer in her early 50's I was concerned enough to want to solve it if I could.

    Weight loss after surgery

WLS (sleeve) schedule for 4/26th 😁

It's still falling more than I would consider normal BUT I have lots of new growth. I don't think it something you can avoid if your hair is going to thin out it will. Everyone is different in how their body reacts to surgery I had a really rough time mentally and I guess physically as I just didn't have to strength or motivation to do anything I ended up having 9 weeks off work. So I had a deep seated regret after the surgery which lasted about 4 months but I am ok now 8 months out.
