We all feel pain differently & respond differently to the surgery. I was given opioids in hospital & a week’s supply to take home but discovered when I did get home I didn’t really need them. By day 4 I think I had one over the counter pain med & that was all. I didn’t have any gas pain nor really any pulled abdominal muscles. Don’t worry when my surgeon removed my gall two years later I had it all but again only took the opioids for the first 36/48hrs. Check with your prescribing doctors about your other meds to find out where they are absorbed. Some are absorbed in your tummy & some in your intestines. Depending upon your surgery if your’s do you may have to seek alternatives. (Some are absorbed in your kidneys or your liver too but those won’t be a worry for you after surgery.) Better to be sure. Hope all goes well with your surgery.

Hi all, wondering if anyone else has a similar experience: some days I can eat no problem and other days the sight of food repulses me. Some days I hit 60 grams of protein other days I barely get to 40. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced something similar?

Hello! I'm just curious. I had surgery this past Friday and was told I had to do clear liquids for 2 weeks. It seems as if some people don't have the same requirement. How soon were you told that you could start full liquids?

I’m pre op. Probably surgery February or March. Just a few more nutrition sessions to complete. I’m in St. Louis also. Good luck to all. Can’t wait my turn. My program requires 2 week diet of no more than 1400 cals. No liquid diet thank goodness -
Anyone Ever Cancel Their Surgery? I Did... Not Sure How I Feel

I have an appointment with them next week (set up ahead of time because I wanted the support in case I needed it). I'm not sure. I mean YES... I can't believe I went through all of this only to back out when I was literally almost on the table. But also NO because of how I felt this morning. I'm going to use this time to really evaluate that. -
Oh man I was hoping it would be temporary! I’ve always been cold all the time and now it’s even worse.. I already sleep with three blankets now and wear double layers and it’s not even proper winter yet 😭

Gastric Sleeve Surgery Stories

I had a great experience. Super easy surgery. Walked over a mile in the halls in the evening. I think I had surgery at 8am? Woke up the next day at 7am, showered, washed my hair, put on clothes and was itching to go home. Very little pain. Zero nausea. The hardest part for me...was that first week after...when essentially your entire life revolves around drinking little cups of fluid several times an hour...and writing everything down. Pain in the butt and felt like a full time job. Worth it, though! Best wishes. You got this! -
I don’t have any recommendations or anything because I’m only 10 weeks po but I do wanna wish you good luck!! And congrats on the wonderful news!! 😃

I had a gastric bypass in February of 2020. Since then, I have lost 150 pounds. I received notification about 2 weeks ago that my insurance approved my request for an abdominoplasty. I thought if I was approved, that it would only be approved for a panniculectomy and that I would need to pay the difference but because of some issues, they approved the full tummy tuck!! My surgeon initially scheduled me for February of next year but then called me last week with an opening for this Thursday! In just 2 days! I am so excited and nervous all at the same time. I think I have everything I need but I wanted to ask if anyone had any recommendations or suggestions for me before I do this. I would really appreciate it!

Gastric Sleeve Surgery Stories

I had mine last week. The story goes like this .. Arrived 3 hours before surgery time. Placed in pre-op room. Nurse setup the IV, measure vitals, etc. A couple of operating room nurses came to introduce themselves, asking for full medical history (I didn't mind overcommunicating the info) Doctor and nurse from anesthesia team came to introduce themselves. Again, full medical history. Asked to open mouth, and bend my neck around (test flexibility, I guess), Said everything looked good. Surgeon came over, talked for a bit. I reminded him of a couple of 'concerns' I had (just me overcommunicating). They pulled me to the op room. Injected the sedative through the IV, and lights off.. Woke up ~ 2 - 2.5 hours later in the recovery room. With a nurse checking my vitals. I would wake up, and go back out on and off. No pain whatsoever. Took me to my room, more testing, questions, etc. Put me on Tylenol IV. Injected some prophylactic blood thinner, and anti-nausea meds (Zofran, I think), an I went back to sleep. About 2-3 hours post-op, did a round of walking around the hallway (with my wife's help) -

Surgery itself was a doddle. The first few days were annoying, because I was trying to expel all the gas they pump into you. Just follow your surgeon's orders, walk as much as you possibly can even if it hurts, and know that the first 1-2 weeks are the "price of admission" to what will 100% change your life. -
Anyone Ever Cancel Their Surgery? I Did... Not Sure How I Feel
You Are My Sunshine posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Well. I went through the program, got approved, got a date, did my 2 week liquid diet, took my Gatorade the night before (to kick you out of ketosis), washed with Hibiclens, got all my proteins, packed my bag, washed with Hibiclens for the 2nd time... And then I started to have a meltdown. I could hardly get to the car. Finally, I got in the car, went to the hospital did (a little late to my check-in time). I went to the counter to check in and just said, "I'd like to cancel my surgery." Dude raised his eyebrows, said OK. And I left. Slammed a protein drink in the car, came home and had a little broth with tofu. I'm not sure how to feel about it. I felt a wave of peace after leaving the hospital. But now I just feel kind of empty. I've been planning this for so long. I told people about it. I did everything that would indicate I was going to have it... and then I didn't. Has anyone been on this side of things? Did you end up getting surgery later? -
I had a very quick turnaround from CIGNA. Three days from submission to approval on the first attempt—but I had a BMI when I started of well above 50, and multiple co-morbidities. But here is the thing—CIGNA is both a traditional health insurance company, and also administers health plans for companies that self-pay their insurance. If you got CIGNA from an ACA exchange or if you work for a small or medium sized company, chances are you have the traditional health insurance. If you work for a large corporation, chances are they're just administering what your company has decided to pay for. You can tell which one you have by looking at the phone number on the back of your card. If it's different than 800-997-1654, or if it says "CIGNA's dedicated line for <company>", you are dealing with your employer, which is actually a bit easier. You can go to your company's benefits department and ask them to make an exception. If they are willing, they will overrule CIGNA's denial. Also, the CIGNA follow-up nurses are amazing. Got me connected to all manner of things I needed. She followed up for two months after surgery and then rang off.

November Surgery Buddies!!!

My pain is very tolerable now that I'm on day 8 post-op. For the past week, I have had an ice pack on my largest incision 24 hours a day. The ice packs REALLY helped tremendously! 🥶 I highly suggest getting 2 or more and keep your incision iced to numb the pain/discomfort as it heals. Last night was the first night where I could sleep without an ice pack. So my pain is definitely minimizing. I'm only taking Tylenol, Prilosec, a cramping relief medication and a gas relief medication. While in the hospital, I had pain coughing as well. I also had slight pain when taking in a deep breath. At the time, I was laying down while coughing/taking in deep breaths. I found when I stood up- that pain was not there while I was in standing position. My nurse and I both agreed that it was muscle pain and not an issue with my lungs (thank God because I was concerned about blood clots even though I have no past history). I did use a Spirometer to practice inhaling throughout my hospital stay and to reinflate my lungs after being put under anesthesia. Congratulations to you, too! I'm sorry to hear that you're coughing more. I would monitor your symptoms and reach out to your nurse if you do not feel you are improving. God forbid it's anything serious- but you don't want to wait too long if you are having lung pain (blood clots, Covid, etc)... I wish you the best and keep us posted on how you're doing. Sending love and support ♥️ -

Any October 2021 Surgeries?

Luckily my doctor allowed me to do soft foods 3 days post op for two weeks. I’m on solids and can eat anything and gulp water like a fish. But I’m hungry. -
Cramping with almost every sip!
Fross replied to Fross's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I can officially say that she is BETTER! The cramping faded slowly, as did the radiating shoulder pain. She is now 2 weeks post op and already on soft foods (per her surgeon’s rules). She had a breakfast burrito this morning and is stoked to be eating “real food” again. I am meal prepping for her and myself and she is already down 22lbs. She feels great, we went on a short trip on Sat and she put in 15,000 steps. She is killing it! I will say, she still gets pain if she eats too fast, she forgets and is quickly reminded to SLOW DOWN! She is learning why it feels like to be full. We think it is crazy that she is able to eat so well now… we weigh everything and all of her meals are 4oz total and she does not drink anything 3.0 mins before or after meals. Low fat, no sugar and she is doing awesome. She is able to get down 60-80grams of protein and 4-5 bottles of water (with GENEPRO protein powder in 2 or 3) with no issues. God is good! Thanks all for the kind words. -

You are saving yourself a lot of angst by not getting on the scale. You don't need it to follow your plan. The first week or so (it varies) is often the price of admission. You will get through it. Congratulations and good luck. Tek -
Hi, I'm 4 weeks post op, had the sleeve at PennMed in NJ. I have Cigna and had a quick approval. The doctors office has to have all of the prerequisite properly documented. Also,a big help was a letter of medical necessity from my primary. The letter included my weight for 5 years and current health issues impacted by weight. Get familiar with your specific plan, call. CIGNA & ask questions. Follow up every 2 weeks until you get approved. Stay positive &Good luck.

Support - Post and Pre Op
Smanky replied to EsojLabina's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had a large (unexpected) hiatal hernia repair with my bypass (dunno if the size of it mad a difference), and felt like I'd been hit by a bus during recovery. Took me a good two weeks to completely recover from it. Breathing in deep hurt. I'm glad it's fixed, but wow did I feel like a well-used punching bag for a while! -
Headaches after Bypass Surgery
Arabesque replied to curvygal's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Sorry you’re experiencing these headaches. Out of curiosity did you have to do the 2 week shake pre surgery diet? If you didn’t or only did it for a couple of days, you could be experiencing headaches because of withdrawal from caffeine, sugar, etc. Also hormones are released from your fat as you lose weight so you may be experiencing hormonal headaches. Just suggestions of other possible causes. Check with your medical team re tea. I was allowed green or herbal tea only. I was a green tea drinker so I really enjoyed the cup I had every day after surgery. 🙂. Hope the headaches abate soon but if they persist call your medical team. -
November Surgery Buddies!!!
SparklesE replied to Tristenhilpert97's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I feel for you both. That's different that your hospitals are not offering anything more than Tylenol. I did receive Tylenol and also had options to request narcotics for pain relief. The Tylenol was not cutting the pain for me, so I did opt for stronger pain medicine. My medical team also sent me home with 7 Oxycodon that have really helped me through the week. I'm on day 7 (post-op) and I feel 91% better! So HANG IN THERE! 😊 I'm looking forward to my first post-op appointment tomorrow. I can finally cough to clear my throat, blow my nose, and sleep for short periods on my side (I'm celebrating all of these little milestones!). 🤗 If you can- DO request stronger pain relief and DO use them safely as needed. Don't suffer. I have read a lot of members on here who share that they did not need them. I did. I never took more than one per 24 hours but it has aided in my comfort and recovery. My surgeon made to sure mention twice that they will not be refilled (for safety). That was totally acceptable/understandable. Gas is a beast and be sure to take some gas-relief chewables. My medical team also provided this for me while in the hospital and while here at home. It was interesting how purified water here in my home would create gas in my stomach versus juice or the water I drank while in the hospital. 🤔 You'll find certain liquids/juices do bloat and create painful gas. Be sure to ask about your gas-relief options because it makes such a big difference! Out of curiosity since there seems to be a lot of variances in the actual procedure- how did your surgeon close up your incisions? My surgeon (who is the Chief of Surgery at the hospital I went to) just used medical tape and not the surgical glue that I think a lot of others use. I was surprised by this. But I am healing up well so I guess it's all good...
