I Think I Am Eating Too Much

Wow thats amazing I am almost 23 weeks out and I still can only eat 1/2C. I understand the size of the new stomach is different with each surgeon. The hunger feeling can be from gas some of the others have mentioned gas feels like hunger so I got gasX and it helped squash that feeling. You really have a great weight loss already hope you have continued success.

Cleared for regular diet 1 week after surgery

We all have differing protocols. I was on one day clear, one week full liquids, one week mushies then on to real foods. I wasn't really hungry post-op and for me it was a great time to get used to small portions, small utensils, tiny bites chewed really well and most of all stopping prior to a feeling of fullness. I got stuck early on with steamed beets of all things. Was gobbling. Taught me a lesson, that's for sure! Good luck to you and enjoy this new time in your life when food is not ruling your life.

    A little down today

Hi Jodie I had the same problem at first - I even wished I had never had the surgery it was so bad at times. But, honesty, it does get better! Just keep reminding yourself of that. I think it's part of our food addiction - obsessing with food even though we can't eat much any more, dreaming about eating all the wrong things. I like Amy's idea - find something else to fill the time - take up knitting, get a library card and start reading like crazy, watch old movies etc. Better yet add some exercise - go for a walk etc. : ) Good luck - just remember it does get better. I'm 12 weeks out now and I'm into a routine of eating healthy food. I have bad days - but it's so much better - I'm losing weight and my Diabetes has resolved. Think positive!

    HELP, STALLED? CONFUSED!

I love tomato soup. I would make one small can with milk instead of Water almost daily. I would heat it up and pour it in a large coffee mug and sip it like coffee. I think that you are worrying too much about weight loss right now. I am not even exercising and I am averaging 10 lbs per month. I am retired so I can afford to do nothing all day long now, and a back problem prevents me from doing really good aerobics, so my weight loss is going to be slower than most, but I am happy with it so far. When you get to start eating real food again in a few more weeks, you will feel more satisfied and less hungry, I think. The sleeve will start working. Stick with the post-surgery meal plan. Relax and try to feel happy.

    HELP, STALLED? CONFUSED!

The hot sauce tastes so good because it is probably the only thing that you're putting in you mouth that has any flavor to it. You are into your 3rd week post-op. I relied on chicken Soup broth at this stage. Also Jello and ice tea with that fake sugar stuff. Sorry, I can't think of the name right now. Asplenda. That's it. I was lucky to have someone make all this stuff for me, my wife. She made home-made stew with extra broth so I could drink the liquid. Tasted awesome. I also ate otter pops. The pink ones are the best I think. You need to lay off the hot sauce and anything else that can hurt your stomach. There are far more things to worry about right now than how good something tastes and quit weighing yourself. Your stomach is healing and you can damage it by ignoring your post surgery food and beverage plan. Stick to the plan. Good luck to you and keep us updated.
  8. It's been a few months since I posted; however, I remember reading the pregnancy threads with interest as a pre-op. Prior to my surgery, I had been infertile due to PCOS for many years, to the point of having less than 5 horrible, irregular periods each year. I had my sleeve done April 16, 2012, my weight on surgery day was 296 (down from 312 before preop dieting). By March 1St of this year, I had been holding steady at 180lbs since Christmas, with not much luck in losing more. I am 5`8 for reference. Around 220lbs, without medication, my periods returned with clocklike regularity - to the point of starting during the same two hour timeframe in the morning. Wow! In late March, I started losing weight without any other changes....and then found out I was pregnant. I knew within about a week of conception due to the onset of gutwrenching morning (read: all day) sickness, followed by crushing fatigue. This has been a total change from previous pregnancies at higher weights, which were much less symptomatic. As I had a major, life-threatening portal vein thrombosis after my sleeve surgery last year, requiring hospitalization on a Heparin drip, I called my hematologist with confirmation of pregnancy at 4 weeks. He placed me on Lovenox injections to be continued through my entire pregnancy and for a handful of months post delivery. Finding a OB who would take me on as a post Bariatric patient was a challenge. My normal OB chastised me, staying bariatric patients are incapable of carrying healthy pregnancies (which is patently false, by the way), and refused to care for me. After many interviews, including one with a midwife who told me I was fat and shouldn't gain more than 10lbs through my pregnancy, I found an intelligent OB who is attentive and knowledgeable regarding the unique needs of expecting post bariatric moms. I am currently 11 weeks, and pregnancy has not been kind to me. I have been on prescription antiemetics in order to stop vomiting, now IV Iron infusions due to anemia. I've lost a few lbs, now holding at 174. My injections had to be doubled due to already forming a clot in my leg. However, that being said....I yearly believe my sleeve gave me a chance for one last pregnancy. A chance I wouldn't have had otherwise.
  9. @@Running2theSleeve I'm sorry it's going to take you so long to get those appointments! I guess the only "good" thing that came out of having a pulmonary embolism in 2013 is that I already have all of these specialists so when I called them for clearance they got me in within a week or so. I know I'm lucky in terms of that. Maybe you could get on a cancellation list or something? People cancel appointments all the time!

Hey Val, Good to hear from you. Looks like you are doing great with your goals, hope I am as successful. My appt is 1:30 with my surgeon Dr. Elly. I must be healing well, because my stomach is growling all the time and I definately feel hunger. Hopefully the puree diet next week will be more satisfying than the full liquids. Have you had smooth sailing? Reading some of the stories on here are a bit scary. Reneez

    Sleeved today! Nov 17

I was sleeved today, November 17. So far so good!!! I thought the pain would be much worse than it is. I had my gallbladder out 5 weeks ago, and that was much more painful. I only really have pain getting up and down out of bed or a chair. And even that is minimal. Right now I'm just very tired which is probably from the anesthesia. I haven't been nauseous at all. I'm just very thirsty right now and I'm only allowed 4 oz of ice chips every 8 hours. I have my leak test tomorrow and I'm hoping for it to be successful. I hope the rest of my healing time is just as easy.

    When will the gas end?

As I recall it lasted about a week for me before it started decreasing. I got some Gas-ex to help with it. Even Water caused movement and gurgling ...but it does pass! Are you out walking? Walking will help too. How is everything else going?

    Lap band woes and more

Wow. Well best of luck to you on this. Congrats on the 52! Way to go. I'm sorry for your present hassles. ............................................. Folks I am flat wigging out. I mean it. I'm an emotional rock crusher right now. I have ZERO tolerance for foul odors. One day something tastes good, the next I could and would gag. I screamed at my family for taking such advantage of me. I normally work my AZZ off and have so since they were born and since I married. This is some 25 years. I tried to return to work this week and my job requires HIGH levels of mental processing. I just could not do it. So now I am home. I sent them to the store last night for FOUR items. food items that I can eat. Someone decided I didn't NEED one or two things. I flipped out. I am feeling like at a critical time when I need some support and YES pampering, they are bailing on me. Does anyone remember labor and what TRANSITION was during labor? THAT is what this feels like.

    9 days post op rash

I had hives the third week post-surgery. We thought it was the ursodiol, so we stopped it for a few days. The hives did go away, but when I gradually added the ursodiol back, the hives never came back - so God knows what it was.

    Fighting Sugar Cravings

I have lost my sweet tooth! These things still SOUND good to me, but now at 10 weeks out, if I put a tiny fingernail sized piece of a sweet thing like a homemade cookie into my mouth, it sindisgustingly sweet and I spit it out. I am so happy about that! So I don't eat sweets. If I crave carbs, I will have 2 oz of my homemade granola with hardly any sugar in it (made with a bit of maple syrup). and if I crave chocolate, I eat 85% or 90% dark chocolate. One square is really satisfying. I love it and I lose weight every day. Maybe 9/10 days the scale goes down a couple oz or more.
  24. Today marks two weeks until my surgery date. On the 25 my surgeon gave me two pre-op diet options. I wanted to try the liquid diet option, so I began right away. About half an hour after consuming a Premier Protein vanilla, I developed one of the worst migraines of my entire life. About an hour later I got violently ill. My headache lasted three days. Needless to say I will not be having that product again. Luckily my pre-op diet doesn't have to be liquid, but I'm now terrified for my post-op diet because it will be exclusively protein drinks. Has anyone else had a similar reaction to any of the protein shakes or powders?

    Fighting Sugar Cravings

I supplement magnesium in a good quantity every night. It’s great for sleep too. i don’t crave chocolate but I know 85-90% dark chocolate in small quantities is a great antioxidant and for someone who doesn’t tolerate coffee or tea, even a little square can “pick me up” if I am tired. And eating it that low in sugar isn’t part of a sugar craving. I am thrilled that I don’t have sugar cravings, which used to run my life. To do it I had to go no sugar, no fake sugar, no fruit, no juice, no bread, when I started eating after surgery and focus on protein and fat and veggies and resistant starches (for the gut bacteria and to be able to poop!) After a couple of months I can make exceptions like one bite of fruit (like if berries are in a salad) here and there. Because now the craving is gone. It’s upsetting to me that some surgeons’ nutritionists suggest or ok protein drinks that are sweet tasting, and jellos, and other things that DO act on the pancreas as well as affect which bacteria make up your personal gut bacteria population. Since the gut bugs create cravings in your brain, by starting anew with surgery, it is the PERFECT TIME to starve the old bugs who live off sugar, let them die out, and grow a new population in the following weeks who will crave good starches, seeds, nuts, resistant starches, fibrous veggies (eventually when you can digest them). I wish every sleever understood how important our gut bugs are to our immune system and our moods and our CRAVINGS. I’m so glad I don’t crave sugar and won’t even feel tempted by Halloween candy etc!
