4.5 Months Post VSG need help!

Don't compare. Everyone loses at their own rates. However what are you eating that prevents you from increasing your Protein? That should be your number one goal, especially if you are working out. You could add some plain greek yogurt to your protein shake to up the protein. (I am partial to FAGE 0%). Many factor go into determining who will have lose skin; age, race, genetic, etc.... You can try and prevent it by keeping skin moisturized, keeping your body hydrated and lifting weights which may help replace the fat with muscle, but there are no guarantees. I also like adding a bit of chopped spinach (fresh or frozen) to my Protein drinks. It add Vitamins and nutrients like Iron, and it's good for the bowels. As for calorie guidelines, you should call and ask your nutritionist. In fact you might want to call them and brainstorm about ways to increase your protein intake.
  2. My hubby is 36 and weighed 360 before and then 336 on surgery date. He is 3 months out and is down to 269. He works out for 30 minutes 3 to 5 times a week. He did have several weeks where he battled severe nausea so he did not eat very much during that time. I am a woman and am about 2 months out and I have lost 76 pounds but only 45 since surgery date. I work out 6 days a week and eat less than he does. Everyone is different and losing weight differently. You have lost a lot of weight. The worst thing to do is to compare yourself to others. Keep doing what you are doing. ON the Protein shake part, we only do 1 a day. It has 30 g of protein and 160 calories. It is a pre mixed shake called Premier Protein. We prefer the chocolate or vanilla flavors over the strawberry. We also have the unflavored unjury brand of Protein powder than can be mixed into food or beverages. It only has 90 calories per scoop. We pretty much eat fish every day. We get about 12 to 15g of protein with our fish per day. Greek yogurt and cheese sticks are my go to Snacks. The yogurt has about 80 calories and somewhere between 8 and 12g of protein. The cheese is 80 calories and 5g of protein. We also eat fat free turkey lunchmeat slices (the thicker cut ones). They have 25 calories per slice with 5g of protein.
  3. I have been banded for 7 years and in this whole time, breakfast is a no go. Best I can manage is a smoothie mid morning - usually after 10am. I am soooooo bored of smoothies!!!!! I would love to eat an egg, or some bacon, anything really, but any attempt means it comes back up shortly after. Sometimes I can manage a couple crackers with some soft cheese or a couple bites of a granola bar, but not a good protein source. Even yogurt is a no go. Any suggestions??? My band is good. I was formerly way too restricted and now that I am a bit more open, I am able to manage better options for lunch and dinner without things backing up or coming up, but mornings are bad. Even juice is tiny little sips over about an hour or more......

    Weighing food

I'm 15 months out and it totally depends on what I'm eating. I can eat a 2 oz turkey burger with 1/2 slice cheese on top (no bun, no side dish) but I could eat a ton of crackers or chips. I still get satisfied with a 5.3 oz Greek yogurt which is good. I still weigh and measure most everything because I can eat a bit more but I don't lose weight if I do. When I was at your stage I never thought I could be able to finish a yogurt ever again haha.
  5. @@freelee - I had RNY on June 4. I was allowed pureed foods on June 15 and I made the Ricotta Bake that day for lunch. It is really good but I do fill up on it fairly quick. I do love fat free refried Beans and tolerate them well (as long as I don't eat it too fast which I made the mistake of doing yesterday). I add in a little greek yogurt to make it a little creamier and then some spices like cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, salt and cilantro. Really hope my "incident" yesterday doesn't turn me off of the beans because I did really enjoy them. I have tried scrambled eggs twice and while I tolerate them ok, I just don't really like them. I have always eaten eggs with salsa and just haven't been adventurous enough to do that yet. I can only eat about 1/2 the egg before I am just done. I have also tolerated pimento cheese very well. I saw a recipe where someone mixed unflavored Protein powder with the light mayo and then mixed in the cheese and pimentos but I admit I just bought the premade one and haven't added any Protein Powder to it yet. (I tried that with mashed potatoes and it was awful. I clearly made it wrong.) I have also tolerated hummus quite well. Still experimenting with everything. I am not an overly adventurous eater in the first place, so trying to take it slow. Oh, I also had some tortilla soup with a little bit of chicken chewed really well and some avocado. All went fine with that too. Having people over for the holiday and plan on trying some chicken thighs cooked in the crockpot in broth (and lime and garlic and cilantro) and hoping it will be moist enough for me to try it. I won't be able to eat much but I think it will make me feel more "normal" like my guests.
  6. I had RNY June 10. I made the cheese bake this week. It was very good. I also have refried beans with a little cheese, cauliflower, applesauce, greenbeans, and yogurt and pudding. The next thing I'm going to try is roast beef hash. I've been trying to add something new every few days to see how it goes. Still can't do eggs though.

    Just had surgery yesterday

I have 3 17 oz bottles I bought from walmart. One for water, one for crystal light and other has chocolate protein drink. I make sure to get 1/2 protein shake down in am other half at lunch. Rest time just sip on other two bottles. I use the pure protein powder from walmart 50g for my whole 17oz bottle. I get to move up to includibg yogurt, instant potatoes, sugar free pudding and instant grits tomorrow in my diet.
  8. I need to get more Protein in my diet. I am full liquids right now. I know that the nut suggests unflavored Protein powder added to food like yogurt and cream Soup. I am concerned about the taste. Can anyone suggest a brand that will not make food taste icky? I also need a Protein shake that tastes good. I have only had Bariatric Advantage. I do not think I could do one of those again. After having 4 a day for 10 days, I am sick of them. I have also tried Premier Protein vanilla. Not bad, but I am not crazy about it. I added PB2 to it to try to change the flavor. That helped a little. I hate wasting money on buying lots of different shakes to see if I like them. Can anyone suggest some favorites to try? Thanks!
  9. If you live near a whole foods they often have single serving packets. Many people like hemp Protein. I tried Vega and wasn't fond of it either. The trick with Protein drinks is a lot of the time it's trial and error. As for non dairy milks and yogurts, be careful. Many are low in protein and high in fat and carbs. I believe either hemp or flax have the highest amount of protein. I haven't tried either. I drink unsweetened almond milk sparingly but I only like Almond Breeze brand. Anything by Silk taste like wallpaper paste to me.

    New here!

sandylynn88, I am 28, but started this when I was 26. I had a long hard battle with my insurance and initial surgeon of choice's office. I am now private pay and have a surgery date of 7/9. I too was a smoker. I have since switched to an electronic cigarette and have weened myself off nicotine(currently on just flavored vapor). Now for the eating in between what is allowed, make sure you are choosing healthy foods. Stock up on veggies! They give you the satisfaction of the munch and crunch of chips. I also turned to Dannon Fit and Lite greek yogurts for the desert flavors (let's be honest, their strawberry cheesecake and toasted coconut vanilla are amazing!). Small changes will give you big results! Take this one day and one step at a time! Best of luck to ya!
  14. I'm 2 wks post-op RNY and ready to start thinking about something besides Protein shakes. I have my limited list from the dr with lots of milks and creamed Soup, yogurt, etc., you know the Puree stage. Just wondering what you found enjoyable in this stage. I'm okay with yogurt and soup, but the milks won't be working for me. Greek yogurt went down fine today, as did Amy's split pea soup (but not enough protein for the half cup to count it as a meal). Suggestions? I would appreciate the input. I don't want to mess up the surgery. Thanks.
  15. I'll check out that protein! I mix my shakes with coconut milk at the moment! I have tried the VEGA brand from GNC. I looked into isopure, but it uses hydrolyzed whey protein. I'll check out syntrax! My Dr's program is a 4 week long liquid diet (including yogurt/pudding) after surgery before moving into soft foods, and adding foods in as tolerated at one month out. There is no puree phase or anything so I have to find a solution for the next three weeks lol
  16. so do I! I started my liquid diet today. Protein drink, yogurt, applesauce, v8, soup

Business trip/meeting 8 weeks post op

For the meals provided for meetings/conferences it is perfectly acceptable to talk with the person organizing your meeting and ask to speak with the person choosing the food. You can find out what the options are and make special requests if needed. You want to make sure that there are options for protein at every meal. Since its in Paris, they will probably have yogurt available for breakfasts but it wouldn't hurt to ask.

    gut bacteria and behavior link?

Great article -- just forwarded around to some friends. Love having learned so much about the Vagus nerve system because of having WLS. And so much more to discover with science making strides at last. I experience anxiety at times and, while I get it that this guy is not recommending every one go out and get pro-biotics, I am going to start mixing up my lacto-bacilli with differing yogurt combos and some supplementation (Lest I be one of the mice who figures out the swimming isn't worth it or I become a marble burier.)

    Temptations

Ditto what @@CanyonBaby said. If you know there is going to be a party or eating event, bring along food you know you can eat: veggies and dip, nuts, cheese, Jerky, yogurt, baked chicken strips with a dipping sauce, etc. Note the connection between most of those items -- Protein. The message here is planning! Never get caught without an acceptable eating solution. I keep jerky and nuts in my car at all times for emergencies. And on my way to goal, I've had to use them a lot!
  20. So, I was sleeved June 23rd 2015. Before surgery I was dairy sensitive, and never drank milk or ate yogurt (it made me nauseous and bloated). For pre-op, I could get in my whey protein shakes and Greek yogurts though, since my stomach was tougher, and I'd just feel crappy afterwards, since it was just a means to pre-surgery weight loss. Now since surgery protein shakes/dairy, and I, do not get along. I have been so nauseous from the whey, that I haven't gotten a full protein shake in since surgery. Broth, jello, Popsicles, and drinks do not make me sick at all. Vegan protein is literally so disgusting to me (texture, taste), but I have to do what I have to do. Here's to hoping my protein levels hit above 20 grams one of these days!
  21. Food wise, I spent my whole week off drooling over food and reading about my overeating food addiction lol. This operation is definitely not an easy fix, it's not brain surgery, but 3 weeks down, food is getting easier. In my week off I cooked up a storm with soups and casseroles, veg bakes, curries etc and ended up throwing most of it out as it's just myself and my daughter. I wasn't hungry of course. In the liquid phase I had tea, coffee, milky Milo, opti, thin custard, yogurt, clear soup from Asian noodle soup, thin home made soups. Laksa soup didnt sit well.. So I've relaxed a lot now in the puree phase and happy with yogurt, thin porridge, mash potato gravy, refried beans, scrambled egg. Soft cheese, smoothie shakes, tea and coffee. Chew thoroughly to mush anything that's not pureed. I dont like pureed chicken, the texture is very grainy. Pea ham soup pureed is nice.

    Potassium - Need ideas

Thanks for the site! I had no idea milk and yogurt had potassium in it. I would definetly be ok with adding yogurt as a snack since it has good protein in it

    8 days post op

We are on the same time table. I had my surgery on 6/23. I was on Clear liquids for five days. Now I am full liquids for 14 days. So- today I had: Cream of wheat, Greek yogurt Cream of chicken Soup sugar free chocolate pudding I also had some Premier Protein shake in between. I expect my meals to mostly be something like that. My Dr. and Nut seem a bit more cautious in what they say to eat than other lists I've seen on line. Some lists have included applesauce and mashed potatoes. I will then be 14 days on pureed food 14 days on soft Then regular foods. If anyone has any full liquid ideas, I would love to hear about them.

2 Days Post Open Severe Nausea

I'm glad to hear that your daughter is doing better. Before I got back to the U.S. I had to get a little creative myself. Fage plain was the only Greek yogurt available. I mixed it with a little stevia, vanilla, and different extracts. I loved it with almond extract. That was my favorite.
