  1. hi All, I can search through zillions of success stories on here but not a lot of unsuccesful ones which is making me wonder if i'm the only one?? I was sleeved back in September and it all went textbook perfect. I had zero issues with recovery and was not in any pain or anything. I was getting used to eating small amounts but did struggle to figure out how much was enough. At first i was worried that i was eating too little, then confused because the amounts i could get in were not at all consistent. My last appointment was in November and i was told i'd lost 20kg which they said was a bit slow and could have been due to me previously being banded. Now i can eat a regular sized meal before i feel any signs of fullness. I haven't felt hungry since the surgery but i always feel like eating which i know is in my head. I can feel myself putting the weight back on and it's severely depressing. I dont weigh myself so i dont know exactly how much has come back. I had an appointment with my surgeon/dietician in march but i cancelled because i was so embarrassed. I'm feeling myself slip back into hopelessness. i dont know what to do. I got the surgery as a tool to help me get this weight off but without any encouragement ie. weightloss, i am slipping further into this depression and picking up old habbits of takeaway and junk food. I just dont know what to do. When i was banded everything worked so great. I lost about 50kg and felt fantastic. It's the only time in my life when i felt like i was actually living. Then the slip changed everything. It was torture not being able to eat anything but slider foods and feeling and seeing it all come back on. So then i think the sleeve will change everything and get me back to that happy place/weight and instead I'm feeling more hopless and lost than ever and like such a failure. Is there anyone else out there having problems with their weight loss/food intake? I'd love to hear from you and know that it's not just me.

    Don't hate me

I've started to look in the juniors department but obviously the clothes are not age appropriate so most of them are a no-go. I love the clothes at White House/Black Market except that obviously, the color palette is limited. I just have to know going in, that I'll be trying on the same outfit in several sizes (if they have them) because I have worn clothing anywhere from a size 2 to size 12. I went to the Ann Taylor outlet the other day and started off with a size 10P dress and size MP shrug to go over it. I wound up with a size 4 regular dress and size S regular shrug. I'm also learning how to buy what looks good and not what fits. That's also a huge change in mindset. I ran into the same issue. Sizing is not the same as it used to be, and I had no idea I was petite until I lost so much weight. If you like Ann Taylor, you should try The Loft.

Mirror shock... the blinders are off!!!

Wow, you had a very emotional yet "moment of growth" morning! I avoided mirrors for not years but decades. Heck I even stopped wearing make-up so I only saw the mirror to brush my teeth or put my hair in a pony tail. It was just too horrible to face what I'd done to my body (I was originally over 400 pounds) I think not only facing the mirror in the store, but going so far as to buy one for your home, screams volumes. You are SO "ready" for the changes the Lap Band and losing weight will bring to your life. You accept who are today which is so important mentally. Honestly, I wish I'd have had that level of introspective clarity when I was still at the beginning of my journey. I have a lot of admiration for you. Best wishes for continued success!

    New !

I am 5'4" and 260 lbs. I have been heavy all my life, too. I grew up poor in Louisiana. Food was typical Cajun food as it is cheap and plentiful ie. meat, rice, gravy, fried foods, etc. On top of this, my mother had absolutely no idea of portion sizes for a child. She gave us adult portions and were made to eat it all. Furthermore, she had this paranoid delusion that somehow we were going to be hungry going to bed so we had a bowl of cereal and milk to go to bed on, nevermind we could roll faster than we could walk. On top of that the household was abusive and neglectful. As a result myself and two siblings suffer with weight issues due to overeating and emotional eating. I was also diagnosed with PCOS 10 years ago. My weight has been a constant struggle.
  5. I need opinions please help me. I started with 186 at 5"2, currently I am at 160.8,, 7 weeks out. I am super happy with the loss although i only lost 4 lbs this month.. I only can eat very little, and I am super full, which I love it. I eat very little carbs and only cheated couple times...My cheat consists of 1 bite of Pasta, seriously 1 spoon... I am a little upset, because I did this because I hate diets, and I failed at all of them. My goal with this surgery was to restrict food portion and lose weight but eating so little that I would lose regardless. I am learning that no matter how little you eat, you might not lose? Am I right, or I am stalling? If I used to eat 2.500 cal perday before surgery and now I eat 700 but I have carbs I still wont lose because if you eat carbs you wont lose? I am so confused... I thought calories were a number.. regardless of what you eat...if you eat 800 calories in a day and burn 3000 cal you lose even if you ate a burger... I am just venting because I hate diets and i feel i am in a endless diet...Maybe i am stressed..I have to plan every meal i eat, plan the carbs, Protein....we ended fat for a reason, and the reason is that we are terrible at diets..Aren't we on a diet again...Ok you will tell me we are on a life change, I know..I am, I dont eat anymore...I eat protein now...but the measuring what, why and when...do you identify?

    Band to sleeve?

Lauren. I am in the same boat as you. I have had many fills, unfills, and micro fills. I could never found my sweet spot like you I lost a total of 72 lbs and now its back to only losing 62, I gain and lose the same 10 lbs. I have thought about the sleeve like you, but again I only weight between 170-180lbs... it is risky to have another surgery just to take off 30-40 more lbs to be at a healthy BMI. I go into get a fill june 4th so I hope it kick starts me. I have been trying for 3 years to get under 170 it wouldn't budge .... so lets hope something is quick start this weight loss again. Good luck to you !

    Band to sleeve?

Can I recommend that you read Mis73 post about carb cycling. Several people have mentioned breaking the plateau in that post after trying it. They do it for a couple weeks just to get the weight losing going again. Check it out. That is going to be my backup plan if I see myself stuck later on (i am only a month out today, and so far losing some).

    Vacation after surgery???

21 is the age of legal responsiblility. If you've already taken control of your weight issues you're ahead fo the game. Why not make your 21st birthday a celebration of your weight loss and a new direction for the rest of your life of being healthy? One or two drinks isn't going to kill you, but getting rip-roaring drunk just to celebrate turning 21 is going to add a ton of unneccessary calories and give you a headache the next day. so...the first day of your 21st year, instead of going for a hike or a swim..you'd be huddled in bed. Is that how you want to start it? You asked for opinions....here's mine. Get healthy first...be able to really enjoy all those activities in the new trimmer you and celebrate responsibly the day you turn 21.

    what is a bougie

It's a tube of a certain diameter in millimeters. The surgeon puts the bougie in your stomach and uses it as a guide for the stapler, kind of stapling next to it. Not all surgeons use a bougie as a guide--some use an endoscope, but they all, I believe, use something as a guide. They're not stapling your stomach freehand. Research has shown that complications like strictures and difficult post-op days (nausea, vomiting) are more associated with smaller bougie sizes but larger sizes don't give as much weight loss. So your surgeon has to decide on a happy medium.
  10. I completed my last weight management class last Thursday. I was told my info most likely would have been submitted on Friday. I called today to check and found out it wasn't submitted yet. The case manager said she was waiting for my clearance my my phys exam. I had this done at the end August. Feeling frustrated that this wasn't sent over yet.
  11. Holly did your doctor/Clinic not give you a binder or "package" with information with sample menus to follow and guidelines? Each doctor is different but most doctors have people do Post-op in various stages. Keep a food journal and if you have access to a nutritionist maybe book an appointment with them to review your journal with them... if you don't have access to one another great option is joining a support group. I host 3 monthly coffee groups for people that are banded and we get people out at all stages... it's a great way to learn information. For me support from other "bandsters" play a big key to helping me lose my weight and also in maintaining my weight. Tom, Toronto Banded July 6 06 Wt. Loss: 156 lbs

    Weight Loss And Exercise

  13. I stopped drinking diet soda four months before surgery and I watched what I ate and worked out and lost forty pounds. This number includes my two week liquid diet too. My surgeon required that I loose fifteen pounds before surgery to help reduce fatty liver. I would say that the majority of us have fatty livers and that's why we have to loose the weight prior to surgery to make it easier for the surgeon to do the surgery. I wish you the best of luck with your up coming surgery.

    An interesting first..

Thank you for responding. I'm hoping it does and that now I'm cleared for regular food, it should be easier to up the calories. A little planning last night has me at 680 for the day so far. I've been pleased with the weight loss so far so speeding it up would be a bonus!!

    Does anyone still do crunches?

I do all kinds of abdominal work and core work. It's true that you cannot "spot reduce" by targeting a specific area. Is this what you mean? Still having strong abs helps to define and shape that area, as well as support your back. The fat loss rule seems to be "first on; last off". But I watched my body redistribute fat as I lost weight. It was inserting to take measurements.
  16. I was banded April 2 an got first fill this past Monday just wanted to share my success in hopes to encourage someone else. I'm unsure of the inches but the start weight was 225 now I'm 201. I can see a big change already.
  17. my husband and i were banded the same day in oct & it has been great to go through this experience together. we figured we got fluffy together, lets get fit side by side. it makes a huge difference with diet AND exercise having a check/balance, and since were pretty competitive - we're constantly trying to one up each other:tongue:. we did not tell a single person till after 5 months post op, and even then only my family knows we were banded. he's pretty private, and uncomfortable talking about having WLS. i'm actually glad we kept it to ourselves for a LONG time, cause we didn't have any "watchful eyes" while we were trying to navigate ourselves through the fill process & learning better eating / exercise habits. now, everyone knows we just eat better & exercise and that's really not a lie. as far as success goes, hubby got to goal around the 7month mark (men just seem to drop the lbs faster:rolleyes:..LOL) - me i'm getting close, i took my goal weight down the closer i got to my original # - but that is just a total personal preference. all the best to you 2~~
  18. My husband was banded May 13, and I was banded June 5. I think both of us being banded will only increase our chances of success. We haven't been at the same stages of our eating yet, but we will be soon. We have not really held back on telling people. I'm like the other poster, eventually everyone will want to know how I lost all that weight (that sounds so good!!!), and I'm not one to tell part truths. It's only a tool. It won't work if I feed myself ice cream shakes all the time...I still have to work for it, and make changes. So what if the band will help me...it's better than being overweight and unhealthy! So, I guess I don't really care what others would have to say about it anyway. Good luck to you and yours!
  19. Welcome Eve, I was banded on the 15th, so am in basically in the same 'soreness' boat as you. I'm Canadian so no insurance will cover this. I told my husband I'd take it out of our retirement plan because if I don't lose the weight I won't be around for retirement anyway. I ended up taking out a loan. How much did your surgery cost? I paid $15,000. My car better have alot of years left in it!!! Bank will never give me more $. I can tell my swelling has gone down now, because I can consume more. Can't wait until first fill. I talked to my Dr. on Friday and I'm allowed a bit of purred foods....told them there was no way I could choke down anymore protein shakes. And vegtable stock basically has no calories when thats all you have all day. Cream of chicken soup has never tasted so good.
  20. :wink_smile:Hey all my cinco demayo fellow bandsters. Looking for an update good or bad on everyones progress. Personally I lost 60lbs so far and feel really good. The last two months hit a little road bump where i lost only 10lbs. Don't know the reason, im certainly not eating more? Started weight lifting and feel that may have something to do with it? Lets hear everyones progress!!
  21. I did post-surgery. It went away I have a theory about my weight loss, though. 6+ months down the road, I hit plateaus regularly. I find that after a few days of eating really "well', meaning, "less", I get starvin marvin, and since I am actually able to get more down at this point, I eat a bit more, and maintain that plateau. I get hungry! My body wants to maintain it's weight. And I promise there are not-so-good foods that go down just fine. I surely eat less than I used to, and I really do get fuller faster, but I still get the hungries every once in a while and will eat what I shouldn't. This is where the head-work comes in for me. Getting past that starvin marvin mode and allowing more weight loss to happen, rather than just maintaining my loss, is the hard part. It's slow, but it's steady down, so I can't really complain. Good luck!

    justapartner

I was only banded on January 18th so not sure if I'm equipped to help you yet but am gonna put my 2 cents in! My husband was fantastic....just be there for them, look the other way if the mental part of this life changing surgery hits home....I had a couple days that I was saying what the HE## did I do? That was during liquid and mushie stage right after surgery! Now to answer your question...I can eat anything my family (11 year old son and 7 year old twin boys and hubby of course!!) eats. Last night they had spaghetti and cheese toast...I had 1/2 cup spaghetti and the inside part of the cheese and toast. From what I'm told, in a couple weeks when I get the first fill that might change a bit. Got a friend who eats anything her family eats just a whole lot more of it! Make sure and take measurements and pictures....the weight loss itself will stall out at some point and it's nice to see or have proof that he's losing inches instead of weight. For example...I haven't lost any weight for 2 weeks, but I put on a swimming suit that last year I wouldn't have left the bedroom in and was parading around in it like a model!!! Just be supportive and go with the flow! Good luck and if you have any other questions you can just ask away. Lisa.
  23. Hi, I live in Mesquite, Texas (a 'burb of Dallas). I'm investigating the entire lapband process. I've been referred to Dr. Richard Anderson at the Surgery Center of Dallas. Has anyone used him? Can anyone tell me anything about him? I admit, I'm not thrilled at the concept of "going under the knife," even if it is a minor procedure. Obviously, I'm morbidly obese or I wouldn't be considering this. I'm also disabled, but it has nothing to do with weight -- I have a number of genetic illnesses that make life difficult in the first place. The extra weight only adds to the problems. I'd love to hear some recommendations for doctors in the Dallas area. I've heard about a Dr. Nguyen Wyn in Frisco but haven't been able to find an address or phone number on him. I have 2 srikes against me going in: 1) I'm on Medicare and, while I have several different problems that QUALIFY me completely for lapband, I know Medicare will fight it. As I'm disabled, I don't work and have absolutely NO income outside of Medicare and Social Security Disability (not married; no second income). 2) My longtime gastroenterologist, I discovered recently, wrote in his notes -- ON RECORD -- that I am suing a hospital where I was taken in a coma last year. I was severely mistreated there and actually physically abused. I seriously CONSIDERED suing them for it, but knew I wouldn't have the money or enough witnesses to do anything, so I didn't pursue it. I mentioned to my GI that I *wanted* to sue them, but never that I was doing so. Now, when he refers me to any other doctor and sends copies of is records, the doctors see that and refuse to treat me. They've never come right out and said it, but I've never been turned away from any doctor before, so I feel quite certain that's what's happening. My internist believes I'd be a good candidcate for lapband (I really do *not* want a gastric bypass for so many reasons, some of which are medical), but finding someone who will do it on Medicare is going to be tough. I simply cannot pay for it out of pocket as I do not have that kind of money. ANY ideas, suggestions, names of surgeons (and their phone numbers or ewbsites) would be seriously appreciated. By the way, what's a "fill in" doctor? Thanks! Laura

    XP: Exercise/Burned Calories??

I dont do anything with them either. I mean technically I guess I lost weight and maintain weight eating a fair few calories (about 1800) but I dont add up what I burn exercising and then eat that number of calories on purpose, I dont exercise to earn treats or anything. I do it becuase its part of a healthy lifestyle and I enjoy it and it keeps me thin and fit.
  25. Just joined here. Had my initial surgical consult on August 18th. Surgeon said I could probably have the surgery done by end of September. I have most of my test done, have my nutritionist appointment scheduled for tomorrow then just need to see a Mental health specialist and get an EGD and I'm ready to roll. I've been overweight for about 10 years now, morbidly obese for about 6. I've tried successfully quite a few times to loose weight but it always seems to make it's way back. My father had the lap band done and dropped from a 42 waist to a 34 in 9 months so I decided it was about time for me to go through with it. There has been a lot of Dr. appointments over the last few weeks trying to get everything done. I go to the nutritionist tomorrow, not really sure what to expect.
