    Non-scale Victories

I had 2 in one day! Yesterday I was standing in front of my gym waiting for my trainer & a truck with two guys drove by. They whistled & made kissy noises. Normally I would be disgusted but I burst out laughing when I realized they were doing it to ME! 2nd NSV was while I was working out - I had my hands on my hips and realized I could feel the bones without even digging my fingers in!! OMG, I HAVE HIPBONES!! Who knew?

    Non-scale Victories

Wonderful nsv! I tubes and rode jet skis with my kids for the first time ever this summer.
  3. Good day to you all! I wanted to share some good news. I woke up Sunday and weighed myself and realized I hit just a tad over my half way goal! I've lost 62 lbs! I started my pre-op diet in Feb 28th of this year. The Dr had put me on a 4 week shake diet. @ weeks of all shakes except a sensible dinner then 2 weeks full liquid. I lost 25 lbs in doing just that alone. I had my surgery March 28th and have lost 37 since. It's been an up and down journey that's for sure. Good days and bad days. Days with good restriction and days where I wanted to eat EVERYTHING in sight. Meeting with my dietitian really helped. When I saw her a few weeks ago she told me she has seen hundreds of patients and that I'm the most successful in such a short period of time that's she can remember seeing. That made my day and really helped get me back to being motivated! I saw her again earlier this week and she said she couldn't believe how different I looked in just a month since she last saw me. I was so nervous to start this journey and kept looking for excuses to not go through with it, but like many have said, in this wonderful forum, that the only regret was not getting it done sooner. I couldn't be more thrilled with the results. It has happened so fast and I cant' believe the little things I'm noticing. Several nsv's. A few of them may be silly. For instance. One I've noticed is when I was at my heaviest using a regular sized public bathroom was so difficult. I was so uncomfortable and could barely open the door to get out sometimes. I always had to use the handicapped stall. Now I'm noticing I can fit in regular stalls with ease now! :-) I was able to paint my toenails the other night with them propped in the same chair seat that I was sitting in without being out of breath and stretching to reach because my big belly was in the way. These are a few of many I notice. They may sound silly but when you couldn't do them for so long it's amazing feeling to do what "regular" people can do that they take for granted. I'm far from goal and I'm a bit nervous because this is the weight I usually have given up with in the past. I felt I could never get any smaller than this, but I'm determined this time. I do most of the work, but this little band has really been a great tool for me. I never understood what people meant in the beginning that it was only a tool if used properly. I totally get that now. I went from barely being able to get off the couch to actually wanting to get up early to go start my 3 mile walk. Sorry for the long ramble, I just wanted to share my story and also give myself some accountability so I won't give up and hopefully maybe to encourage others who may be struggling right now. I've had a lot of encouragement from my surgical team, dietitian, friends, and family and I'm so grateful God's been holding my hand and giving me strength through it all when I really thought I had none of my own left. Well, I hope you all are having a blessed Thursday! The first picture is about an hour before surgery. I look extra gross because of the wet shower hair on no makeup and the fact I was talking when my husband snapped the picture. I almost didn't post it because seeing it makes me cringe, sick to my stomach and want to cry my eyes out, but I ended up posting it because I want to remind myself I never want to go there again. The second one was taken this past Sunday after church. It's crazy how sometimes my mind doesn't see a difference in the mirror at all, I have to take old pics out sometimes to keep my mind in check. Anyone else go through that?

    It is what it is

Gowalking...you always start the most awesome discussions! One of my hopes for WLS is that my lapband would allow me to view and eat food like a naturally- thin person. By that I mean someone who is genetically thin, not someone who dieted their way to a normal weight. I live in Paris, where the majority of people here are like this--born thin and stay thin throughout their lives, as HealthyNewMe correctly observes. And I'm so very grateful that this wish for my lapband has happened for me. With my appetite dimmed, and my stomach capacity so much smaller than without the band, I do look at my food, and eat my food, like a "normal" person. And you know what? A "normal" person has days, occasions, celebrations when they have a special cocktail, or a slice of wedding cake, or something that they don't have on an ordinary day. But instead of this derailing them, they very naturally just start back (at the next meal, or the next day) with their "normal" (for me, that means "banded") way of eating. This is what you are describing, Gowalking, and this, to me, is a huge NSV! Before my lapband, I was one slice of cake away from falling off the wagon. Seriously. I lost 50 pounds over a two year period, from 2003 to 2005. And at Christmas 2005, I sat down at the table, looked at the holiday meal, and said to myself "just one piece of that dessert" (a yule log, for those interested). And then it was off to the races...gaining everything back and more....and the cycle began again. That one dessert put me back on the road to regain. With my lapband, I do not have this "on program/off program" mentality, so if I have a square of chocolate, or a slice of cake, or a glass of wine, it doesn't make my mind switch into the "I've blown it now so might as well EAT ALL THE FOOD until my next weigh-in, when I'll get back on program." I know I'll never be a "normal" person in terms of having a natural, born-with-it mindset around eating, but with my lapband, I know that it gives me tremendous help in eating like a normal person. Great thread and I'm loving everybody's contributions here.

plenty more NSV's to come, congratulations...
  6. Congratulations! Aren't all these things worth everything we went through?! I love this kind of NSV!
  7. Since moving to So Ca 6 weeks ago, we thought we'd take advantage of all the fun stuff to do (watched the Dr Phil show tape a couple weeks ago and will see The Tonite Show on Dec 10th) and since Knotts berry Farm has FREE (reg $68) tickets to veterans and 1 friend till Jan 4th, we decided to go. I'm not a roller coaster fan at all. It might have something to do with the fact that I didn't want to know if I wouldn't fit in it. Too embarrassing to be told by staff that u won't fit. Rode on 5 of them (1 was barely big enuf for my 6'1" hubby. If he'd have been 1" taller, he wouldn't have fit) without any problem. And I didn't worry about it. Worried about going 0-82mph in 2.3 seconds, going straight up then straight down, but didn;t worry about fitting in the seat! Yeah me!

    silly success yet again...

Another great NSV. And by the way... There is no such thing as a silly success. j/s Keep it up girlfriend, you are working it!
  9. Yesterday I weighed myself in the morning and the scale showed 186.6. A few hours later, I weighed myself again and it showed 189.4. We just need to stay off the scale! Lol. NSV moment: today I wore a black t-shirt I purchased two months ago. It used to be fairly close to my belly. It is size XL. However, today, when I wore it, it looks like a mini- dress. Amazing!
  10. When I gained weight, I noticed my height went from a solid 5' 2.5" to 5' 1.75" which was sad but I knew that as we age our vertebral discs loose elasticity and we get shorter. Sun of a gun, I've been in two doctor's offices this week and both measured me at 5' 2.5" again! I had no idea my weight gain had put that much pressure on my spine. Also, I've gone back to my normal shoe size of 7.5. I was an 8 at my heaviest!

    Realize Band? SILS? Anyone?

I have the good old Allergan AP Lap Band and my port is in my abdomen. Above my navel, a little to the left. Funny mini NSV, I have lost 60 pounds and now, if the waistband of my pants is over my port, it is uncomfortable. And, I was FINALLY able to feel the damned thing with my fingers, where before, I couldn't.
  12. First off, congratulations on your weight loss ! Nice NSV from your Dr. too ! And 2nd off, I dont think your friends are just being "nice " , I honestly think its the shock of all of a sudden seeing you so slim !! Those people didn't get to see the weight come off gradualy, they were probably blindsided by you leaving at one weight, and coming back at another! Shocker !! This summer I saw a relative I had'nt seen in several months, her first comment to me was ( in a very caring way ) " you need to eat a cheeseburger !!" She was shocked when told her I weighed 144 lbs ! Still considered "overweight at 5'3 ! So honestly, I'm thinking its the sudden shock of seeing you so slim ! Either way, you look great ! Congratulations !!!
  13. @@bikrchk You mentioned redistribution, I have noticed that happening to me even though my weight loss has slowed to a crawl. I swear I am losing inches in places even though the scale is not changing much. I did have an awesome NSV today. My husband who does the laundry (yes, I know how lucky I am ) was hanging up my jeans. I hear him yell from the bedroom. "Geez, the waist on these jeans are tiny. Everytime I fold your clothes it astounds me how far you have come!" It made me grin from ear to ear! Of course I told him how much I love him and that he got extra credit for being such a fantastic man. He is also obese and was going to have sleeve surgery but then had to deal with AFIB ablation twice in the last year. He has since decided not to have this surgery but at some point I suspect he will. He needs to be ready and he is not quite there yet.
  14. And 26 lbs lighter. Nsv's 1. Bought a shirt seven months ago didn't end up fitting tried it on today FITS!!! 2. Took my jeans straight out of the dryer and didn't have to stretch them out to button them. I actually have to pull them up every once and a while 3. Getting told almost everyday "looking good Jen" 4. My parents are proud of me for taking action and was told today! 5. My boobs are a lot more noticeable. I knew I had them just were hiding!!! And this is just one month out!! I'm bringing sexy back!!!!
  15. Hooray!! I'm always looking for those NSVs! Good for you!!
  16. I had 188 to lose. I'm still only preop and have only lost 53 pounds so far and only 1 person has noticed. She said "it looks like you lost a little weight??" So I said yeah and told her how much and THEN she complimented me lol. Anyway my motivation has only been from non scale victories (NSV), goal NSV and incentives I gave myself for weight loss numbers. I posted my charts on another thread and I believe my profile but I'll also include them here just to give you an idea of what I mean. Sorry for low quality and poor handwriting lol. I didn't initially intend to share. The last pic is of my "skinny bucket list" / goal NSV HW: 328 (02/21/17) CW: 275 (preop 53# disowned)

    Nsv... Omg!

Way to go! I feel this NSV is at the heart of the invention of the sleeve. This post literally made me smile. I am so happy for you! Keep up the great work!

    NSV, Sort of....

I am losing weight at a nice pace, and I'm SO happy that I have my band! I have a situation here that I just can't wrap my mind around. My size 20 jeans....some of them are HANGING on me, so much so that they aren't really comfortable. I tried on my size 18's, and they are still way too small. I dug in my closet some more, and found some more size 20's that I didn't know I had. I tried them on, and I can't get them buttoned. WTF?? I am getting frustrated that I have NO jeans that fit me right now, and I really don't want to go buy any (even at Goodwill or DAV) because I know that I won't need them very long. At least that's what I'm hoping. WHY is it that there is such a huge size difference in my 18's vs. my 20's? Oh, and the 20's that are too small are THE SAME EXACT BRAND as the ones that are hanging on me. I understand that the cut makes a difference, but SHEESH! Just had to get that out. I'm really frustrated about it. :phanvan
  21. There is a reason why they call it a journey. My wife and I were banded on 9/12/07. At first I lost much quicker than she did she had frequent times when she would lose and gain the same 3 pounds. I lost most of my weight the first 8 months then I slowed way down. Six years later she weighs about 25 pounds less then I do. I have lost over 100 pounds and so has she I am still losing slowly she is staying about the same weight. I focus a lot on NSV and the fact that I do not take any medication for diabetes. Just stay the course and do not compare yourself to others.

    odd NSV

i was scanning and faxing alot of contracts a big ago and came across a NSV that never occurred to me..and i was thinking i have got to post this and hope someone reads it and goes, hey, thats right, so can i and just maybe....encourage (esp a larger bmi person like myself)...even if for a moment.. I have posted NSV on tying shoes, no more seat belt decapitation, putting my own socks on, fitting into regular bathroom stall...and the list is endless.... i have no shame, i just post reality as i experience it... last year i couldnt stand for more than 5 min at a time (100% TRUTH) and here i was standing and faxing for a good 25 minutes.....i recall with great clarity having to fax one or two items and coming back to sit down as my legs, just couldnt handle the girth/weight granted its not much ado bout anything but to me, it was MAJOR thought id share

    Nsv!

I had surgery on 03/29/13, so I'm almost 8 months post op. I started out at 256 lbs. and my goal weight is 150 lbs. Today, I weighed in at 190 lbs. Because of my height and the fact that I have huge boobs (LOL), I really just wanted to fit into Size 12 jeans. I figured that would make me look well proportioned. I wanted to wait to buy clothes, but everything is falling off of me. I caved in today and went to buy a new pair of jeans. I bought a Size 14, but was too embarrassed to try them on in the store. I just tried them on...they're too big!!! Yippee!!!
  24. I hear you Girl, I didn't want to put it out there, but me too I was proud!! Keep up the good work, so many more NSV's await us!! Sent from my iPhone using VST
