Hi guys. Final day of the pre op diet today and 13lbs down. I have my bypass tomorrow - such a mixture of feelings - mostly happiness and relief. 😘

Psychiatric medication efficacy
LindsayT replied to Jonathan Carlson's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
It may depend on your surgery. Bypass causes malabsorbtion, and that could carry over to your medication. For one of my mental health medications, they were doing blood work often to check my levels. I would speak to your med provider. They may have to change dosing. Good luck! -
The only thing that I will add is that Bypass can lead to a slightly higher chance of developing Gallstones. I had my Gallbladder removed a few years ago, so that wasn't an issue for me (and why I chose Bypass)

I went to my Bariatric doctor a couple of months ago as I had been suffering some weight regain and I was worried about the direction my body was going after having had the sleeve Dec 2018 and then Roux Y Bypass Oct 2020. She put me on Metformin and Phentermine to help counteract the effects of some of my other medication and menopause. I too had been experiencing the worst smelling stools imaginable and felt that I could never travel. The Metformin had the best side effect and turned that around for me and for the first time since having the surgeries, I had normal smelling stools! Game changer!! I have no blood sugar issues and am only taking the Metformin 500 mg twice a day for weight management reasons but it is controlling the smell of my stools! So I had to share as I had too like the rest of you been suffering since 2018 with the same issues up until a couple of months ago....

What was your "Last Meal" before starting the pre-surgery diet???
Lipman replied to Jjohnson1971's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I got my insurance approval on a Thursday, and scheduled my bypass for 9 days later, so my diet was supposed to start immediately. I was traveling home that Thursday, so I got Chipotle (with chips and salsa), which is one of my favorite meals (but not too bad so I could tell myself I was kinda starting the diet ) -
Hi there! Just wanted to gain some perspective. Out of anyone here who had the gastric bypass, can you give me info on your journey? How much weight did you lose in the first month, 3 months, 6 months after surgery? I'm working on getting my clearances so that I can have surgery in late summer. My friend, who just had GB, told me "your new life doesn't start the day of your surgery, but right now, so take care of yourself!" So, I'm trying. But hearing what others have experienced will give me some perspective and I'm big on that kind of thing.

I lost 25 pounds in 3 months before surgery and your friend is right. Putting off losing weight till surgery date just reminded me of all the excuses I made before. I'll wait till Monday to start or after the holidays.
I'm 8 weeks out from Gastric Bypass and lost another 25. So I'm averaging about 3 pounds a week post-surgery. That's the most I've ever lost consistently over time without regain so I'm happy. Good luck on your journey!

May 2023 surgeries
Miss Sunshine P replied to WVJess2Less's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have been saying the same thing to my friends I don’t feel hungry or full. If they hadn’t put me on a time to eat I probably wouldn’t because I don’t know I’m hungry and I stop eating in 30 mins because they told me I don’t feel full. I don’t want to stretch my pouch either but it feels strange not having those feelings. I’m 4 weeks post-op from gastric bypass surgery -
Two-year hiatus from this site
Tomo replied to Born in Missouri's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I only stayed a few months after my first WLS years ago but I had to get a bypass revision for gerd almost 2 years ago and have stayed around since. People back then were always arguing and fighting, but I don't see much of that now at all. Much more calm and informative threads the last 2 years compared to before. Alex must've cleaned things up. -
I had a week of solid pain after my surgery, I believe it was gas buildup, but once it all passed I felt great, which surgery did you have? I had the bypass, but I heard the VSG is much more painful to recover from

They wouldn't offer both if they weren't a good solution for different people. Gastric sleeve, in general, results in about 10% less weight loss than bypass, but also has fewer long-term limitations...but I am a sleeve patient who lost every bit of their excess weight and more. In *general*, you hear of less sleeve patients who cannot tolerate certain foods a couple years after the procedure, and bypass patients sometimes end up being unable to tolerate certain things ever again. That being said, I am a sleeve patient, I am 21 months PO and I still don't tolerate apples, potatoes, rice, pasta, certain types of bread, or carbonation very well so I am still actively avoiding them (which, in a way, has helped me stay on track, so I suppose it's a bit of a mixed bag). I would listen to your doctor's recommendation and make sure you understand their reasoning for making said recommendation. There is a reason both surgeries are as common as they are. -

I was here over ten years ago during my lapband journey… now I’m back since I’m having revision to bypass. I plan on sticking around this time! -

neither one is better than the other - they're both good surgeries and you'll find people on here who've been very successful with both. there are some medical conditions that would make one surgery more appropriate for you than the other (as summerseeker mentioned above, bypass is often recommended for patients who have GERD), but if you don't have any of those conditions, it comes down to personal choice. your surgeon will assess your health status and may recommend one over the other, or he/she may tell you that you're a good candidate for either. In any case, spend some time researching both surgeries - there's lots of information on here and other places on the internet. -

Lots of people have an easy choice here because they already had GERD. People with GERD have a Bypass because it 99% stops it. I had the sleeve and ended up with GERD. Its a small percentage but its unpleasant to be sure. Many people with GERD have a Bypass later. There is little difference between the weight loss for either surgery. In the UK it cost £2000 more for a Bypass than the sleeve, I went with my surgeons recommendation, he said the sleeve would be fine so that's what I had. Had he said otherwise I would have stumped up the extra cost, I wish I had the Bypass now. -
What’s the better option? Sleeve vs Bypass?

I left this site abruptly two years ago (I no longer remember why). Has anyone else disappeared and then returned? I think I was curious. Did I still need the support of like-minded people who'd be able to empathize with any issues that surrounded my gastric bypass? I think I also miss the socialization. Can anyone else relate? Sadly, I need to refresh myself with the settings and the how-tos of the site. Forgive me if I accidentally break bariatricpal while trying to reclaim my "skills."

Gastric bypass surgery through Maimonides with MetroPlus
RnYBabe posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wanted to create a dedicated thread as I don't see a lot of posts about Maimonides in NY. I have my first consultation with the bariatric physician's assistant and a nutritionist as well as a virtual consult with the surgeons on July 12th. They sent me a welcome packet that stated which steps their clinic requires for surgery. The steps are to schedule a 2-in-1 appointment with the PA and nutritionist, An endoscopy, blood work, and a psych consult and they do provide someone if you don't have your own. and cardiology/pulmonary evaluations which are an EKG and sleep study. I have pre-scheduled everything but the psych eval. Prior to the surgery, they also request that you get clearance from your PCP, so I would make that appointment as well. I will update this thread as I go through the process for others to reference. Metroplus basically told me they don't have requirements as long as your BMI is over 40 or 35 with sleep apnea, diabetes, or high blood pressure. -
Question! I have Anthem blue cross blue shield. Did anyone get pre approved for weight loss injections for pre diabetes? I’m not quite diabetic but wanted to see if anyone got approved pre diabetic. Have about 20 lbs to lose 3 years after gastric bypass. Slow regain.

Almost 5 years post-op/ taste-smell still compromised
Born in Missouri posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I don't enjoy eating anymore. The only thing I can seem to eat or even taste is Campbell's Vegetable soup. I am not keeping up with my vitamins. I weigh around 180lbs, down from 303. I don't regret getting my bypass but I thought I'd be at a different place. -
Am I The Only One Percent?
SuperGuuurl replied to ChreeMiriah's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hey ChreeMiriah Thank you so much for sharing your story…I’ve just posted my own experience with the mini gastric bypass I did back in February. It’s not at all what you are going through but it’s also a story of suffering with food intake and the fact that nothing stays inside. I don’t really vomit, i just gag for minutes and “throw up” saliva. However I do have diarrhoea every single morning until I feel my insides are dried out completely. To say this is an ordeal is an understatement. I’m completely at a loss and I wish I could help you out but I need the same help! Thank God for these forums… I’m here if you want to talk… -
High B12 and AST and Alt levels at 2nd year post op visit?
Mygirl0226 replied to Michele 2021's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
YES! I’m having liver flares of high alt/ast and vitamin b 12 over 2000. Mine come in flares and I get excruciating pain and end up in the hospital. My last high liver flares were so high I lost use of my legs temporarily. It was SO scary, the doctors told me I was crazy basically and after 6 months I finally got a doctor to believe me that something is wrong and he thinks it’s from the bypass :( I have neurological issues suddenly and I’ve always taken vitamins as directed. My highest weight was 227, lowest 137, currently at 150. I didn’t lost a crazy amount of weight but I’ve never been sicker and I never thought it could of been from bypass. I regret the surgery big time. -
I had gastric bypass Roux N Y on May 3rd. First two weeks were pretty good, no pain or nausea at all really. Now, for the past week I seem to have nausea all the time. Everything I try to eat tastes disgusting to me and makes me want to gag. I'm barely eating anything at all. I feel like I wake up nauseated and stay that way all day. I am able to get water down, but food is almost a no go at this point. I absolutely hate the protein drinks. Just the thought of them makes me want to puke. I've tried several different ones and unflavored powders, as well as a protein "lemonade" mix, and protein water and I just can't. I'm so over this at this point. Hoping it gets better soon. It's not even the taste of food that I miss, it's the being able to eat without wanting to vomit just thinking about it.

4 days to go and counting until my bypass……….
-
Does anyone else hate eating real food because you’re afraid to stretch out your new stomach? I’ve been watching my 600 Pound Life and the Dr. Says gastric sleeve is just as effective in the short term as gastric bypass. Is this because the sleeve is easier to stretch out?

What was the moment/day you decided on WLS?
Sigh replied to longhaul68's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Ive fought my weight all my life- sometimes healthy, but most of the time overweight, so dieting wasn’t new it me, BUT after covid and hitting peri/menopause, the weight came to stay. I was miserable- joint pain, pre-diabetic- and couldn’t lose weight no matter what - even on my usual low carb/keto path. Tried metformin—ugh, Tried contrave- Wellbutrin/naltroxene combo— sicker than a dog and scared of messing with my mental health. HRT was causing the weight to climb- and in november had hysterectomy - and by February hit my highest weigh of 195, Called and got a local Bariatric surgeon consult. Went in and discussed it- decided on VSG. I was NOT going to hit 200 - none of my clothes fit and everything hurt. Found out the process could be months log- so I got on internet and had Mexico- flights, surgeon and two days off work booked and planned for the next month. It cost me about as much as out of pocket would have cost me in the states and i was able to lose weight before surgery- where if id stayed in states, i could have been denied if i lost anything (MX requirement was BMI of 30, states was 35 and comorbitities, i think) I was READY-and was NOT in the mood to wait. So decided Feb 3, and surgery March 3. So glad i did it!
