  1. If it's a solid weigh it on a scale, if it's not measure it in a cup. I know I can eat about 2 oz of chicken or steak, sometimes a little more and about 1/2-3/4 cup of whatever is measured...soup, vegetables etc. You will learn your limits as time goes on. I buy a lot of "single serving" size items like the 4 oz cottage cheese, I can eat the whole thing. If I bought a large size container I would just measure out 4 oz. I buy the big size Fage yogurt and measure out (on a scale, not in a cup) individual portions at 5-6 oz. It gets easier as you figure out what you can eat.
  2. My team was pretty adamant about measuring by volume only, specifically telling us not to use a scale. You'll find with a lot of foods that you'll get more by weight than volume. I often eat the greek light and fit yogurts that come in a 5oz container so I like to use that container as a frame of reference. They told us around 6oz by volume for meal so I try to visualize if I could fit my meal into that container.

I started my purée diet early, oops!

Same, I started purée the day after surgery while at the hospital. But it consisted of yogurt and applesauce. Aside from the protein shakes and liquids of course. Second week I asked the nurse if I could have puréed beans and she said yes but eat very slowly to see if it’s too much for my belly.
  4. Warning: TMI. Hi all. I had my gastric bypass on 10/6 so I am 16 days post op. I am having diarrhea to the point of incontinence and have resorted to wearing a pad to prevent any accidents. I’m so mortified. My diet has advanced to soft foods like scrambled eggs, yogurts cottage cheeses, etc. My surgeon is very liberal on advancing the post op diet. I don’t have dumping because it happens at random times. This is completely new for me. Before the surgery I had just the opposite issue and dealt with constipation occasionally. Just wondering if anyone else had a similar problem. Thanks in advance.

    September Surgery Buddies!!

I ate at restaurants some of the time, but I also bought things from grocery stores like FF light Greek yogurt, hummus, veggies, and protein shakes. That probably helped. When I did go to restaurants, I left most of the food (that came with waiter questions - "is the food okay?" "yes, I just had surgery and I can't eat very much. It's delicious!" "Do you want to take it home?" "I would but I'm staying in a hotel and can't"). One evening my coworker and I went for sushi at a high end restaurant and shared the food she ate more than I did (a first!) and I just ate the fish, leaving the rice. It was nigiri, but I just treated it like sashimi. The server didn't say anything. Definitely don't get dehydrated though - it will ruin your trip to end up in the ER! Most of the time there are bathrooms everywhere - grocery stores, department stores, gas stations, etc - and the more active you are, the more fluids you will need. I didn't get dehydrated, I just drank a lot less than I'm used to, which is A LOT!
  6. I went to Italy 4 months post op too, twins! I had a lot of coffee, salads, nuts, cheese, yogurt, fruit with some pizza, gelato and pastries thrown in (surgeon said I could although I assumed I couldn’t) because… it was Italy. Pharmacies did have ready made and powder protein for shakes. I shopped at local markets a few times and made a meal of my own at a cooking class. I was limited by capacity so that was nice. I did try to be balanced but still have fun. Surprisingly food was not the fun I ultimately had. Good Luck and have fun ❤️

    Bad Breath

You're just fine, better even, without the sugary drinks - at least you don't have that addiction to get over! You have gotten a good clue with the banana, and it doesn't have to be fruit or juice, any kind of complex carb will do, and it doesn't have to be much. As with everything, a bit of moderation is often the key. From what I have seen, those who are the most adamantly low carb, counting them out, not exceeding some magic number, etc. are the most affected. Sometimes we hear responses to your problem such as "isn't it wonderful -that's the smell of burning fat!" More accurately it is the smell of not eating your vegetables. We will drop ketones as long as we are burning our fat stores, irrespective what kind of diet is being used, but we don't need to take things to extremes. When I had labs pulled, I was dropping ketones as expected, so I guess one could say that I was "in ketosis", but I never had those type of symptoms as I never kept my carbs all that low - it wasn't sugary stuff, just vegetables, legumes, some berries in the yogurt, etc., yet my weight loss was still very rapid as my caloric deficit was fairly high. So, there is a balance one can achieve in this. It sounds like you have decent habits to begin with, but adapting things to work with the radically reduced intake that we have for a while can be tricky. Good luck with it....
  8. That is good...I'm doing better after talking to my dietician and only trying one new soft food a day. Tried yogurt and that went good...then did some scrambled eggs....just taking it slow.

    Breakfast ideas?

When I moved on from the liquid phase I started with Oikos Triple Zero yogurt, farina cereal with almond milk, sweetener & cinnamon. During the soft food stage, I added scrambled eggs. When I moved on to the modified regular diet, I had eggs with other cooking methods, high protein/ low carb bagels with light cream cheese, oatmeal with mashed banana or sweeter & cinnamon. I have also had protein waffles & pancakes with sugar-free syrup. I recently purchased the keto bread from Aldi and had that toasted with egg & cheese for the first time today. I often still start the day with a protein shake, just to make sure I get that protein in. I think I want to start making smoothies with some fruits, veggies, & added protein now that I am getting close to 3 months out. I hope you get some good ideas! It is helpful to hear what others eat!
  10. Hi all!!! I hope you are all keeping safe and having a great school year! I started going back into work this year (I was remote last year) and boy I am starting to fall back into old habits! Its so easy to go the day without eating anything and then pick up fast food on the way home. I cant just go to the bathroom every 30 minutes so I drink way less water than I used to. When I get home I still have work to do so I don't work out as often I used to. And Im so used to having a drink while I work at home that its hard not to want to stop at my local liquor store after work (especially after a trying day dealing with parents who refuse to send their kids to school with masks.) It was so much easier being healthy when I was remote. Anyone else struggling? Any advice or tips? Im trying to find more snacks to eat throughout the day and easy dinner/lunch ideas that don't require as much prep. I am so over protein bars! I pack them and never eat them. Mostly I make a drink with protein powder and drink it throughout the day. I either have turkey bacon or yogurt in the morning. I also nibble on carrot sticks from the schools lunch when students bring them for me (they can be so sweet!). I am contemplating morning workouts but I just don't want to! lol. Maybe a morning walk with my coffee? I still can't eat large portions of anything so Im not gaining weight but I was already a slow loser. Im worried that this job will halt my progress. Why cant I be one of those people who loses weight when they are stressed! 😣 I know this is a list of excuses and I just need to try harder but I could really use the support of my fellow educators! What has been working for you?
  11. I'm definitely not eating anything too fast, lol...it wasn't a feeling in my throat it was a feeling in my stomache towards the left side which once I talked to my dietician said it sounded like nerves. I did try a Greek yogurt cup yesterday like she recommended...took me about an hour to eat it all but no problems. I guess I just need to get mentally comfortable with eating again
  12. I'm 2 weeks out tomorrow. I've been terrible this 2nd week by trying things I'm technically not supposed to be ready for. I am in the same boat but not concerned about leaks but prolonging some of the healing and pain. I'm just sick of all the sweet crap. If you're hungry, eat but like others have stated, talk to you dietician and take it easy. I've already learned that even 1 piece of dark chocolate will cause dumping. I've now got sugar free as an option but am being very careful. As I said, everything seems sweet and I'm bored with it. My goals are still the liquid intake but I've tried scrambled eggs and fried eggs... well egg. A single egg is even hard to finish, but there's no time limit or anyone saying I have to finish it. Try adding some flavorless protein powder to a yogurt. It may satisfy and get you some protein. It was a lifesaver during preop. Bone broth too. I put a baggie over it and put it back in the fridge if I can't finish it. Try to remember that our previous portion size is gone. Getting a smaller bowl or plate out can help. I read that and agree. Once you put a single egg on a dinner plate, you feel like it will not be enough. A salad plate or bread plate visually looks like more. I hope this is helpful or encouraging. I'm super new to all of this too. Good luck!!
  13. So I have been doing a lot of research and food and drink elimination. Also portion sizes. I have taken those down to 1 1/2 ounces. Very careful to follow the 30/30 rule. It is definitely not as bad as it was last week but the diarrhea and horrible bubbling in my stomach is a constant melody, with pretty painful lower abdomen gas pain. I have discovered that semi solid foods like yogurt, pretty thick protein shakes, cottage cheese seems to stay inside longer. I found this interesting article from a couple of Dr’s from a medical website, Gastroentonolgy and Hepatology, Millennium Medical Publishing. It had a lot about uncommon sleeve problems in the early stages. This is the snippet I found interesting. “A recent prospective study suggested that dumping syndrome also occurs after VSG. It is hypothesized that VSG increases gastric mobility due to increased intraluminal pressure within the remnant stomach, ultimately causing rapid emptying to occur in addition to the know restrictive properties of this procedure.” well…. Ah…. That might be it, it might not lol. I took a cancellation appointment for the gastroenterologist I see her next Thursday. That seems a million years away. I can tell I was way more upbeat at the beginning of this post now I can tell I’m getting kinda worn down by the constant worry about running to the bathroom then having to get in the shower and wear a diaper!!!!!!! Thanks again to everyone who’s commented it has been very helpful and encouraging.

    Banana "Bread" Smoothie

Even pre-op and most of my life for the last 2 years (thanks to paleo low carb eating) I avoid bananas like the plague but I think in small increments they're nutritionally dense and easy on the tummy. I know people love them so I figured this would be a great recipe to share. This felt awesome on my Day 13 post op tummy. 1/2 banana 1/2 C. VANILLA GREEK YOGURT (I used 2 Good) A dash of nutmeg A dash of cinnamon 1/3 C. Fair Life Fat Free Milk 1/3 C. Filtered Water 1 Scoop Whey Protein (I use MyProgressMD - in Vanilla recommended by my surgery program) 🍌Nutrition Facts 283kcal 21g carb (normally I'd consider this high but while I am recovering I'm good with it) I aim for under 50g per day 4g fat 41g protein 🎉 2g fiber 11g sugar 87mg sodium Blend until everything is smooth! I am ending my full liquids soon but was getting really tired of chocolate. I think PB2 would probably also taste great in this recipe but I didn't feel like peanut butter today. You could also add cocoa, etc or any other flavors you like!

    Starting actual foods

The way the PA in my surgeon's office put it is that you have to experiment and find what works for you. There are some things that your body will struggle with for no apparent reason. The first solid food I ate was tuna fish with some Greek yogurt and a little bit of salt/pepper. You eat slowly, in small bites with great chewing and wait to see what happens. I know this sounds weird, but I know I am generally okay with a food if I can burp. When a food doesn't work for me, it feels like there is a manhole cover over my stomach and the food feels like it backs up on me until I vomit. But if I am burping, then air is moving through the system and things will be okay. You will find there are foods that you tolerate that you don't enjoy (chewing watermelon down to a pulp is a deeply unpleasant experience). You will find some foods go down easy (for me, tuna fish, sauteed spinach and/or ground beef all go down fairly easily). You will find some foods that you can handle, but your stomach lets you know that it doesn't enjoy breaking them down (for me, grilled chicken, white rice). The minute that your stomach indicates that it is full or it is having trouble, put down your fork and stop. It's not worth pushing it. Go into this with the attitude of "I am going to try this, I am going to listen to my stomach, I am going to do the big three [slow, small, & chewed] and we will see what happens." Solid food is not something to be scared of.

    Breakfast ideas?

If I have time in the morning, I eat real food for breakfast - a 1/4 cup of cottage cheese, a soft scrambled egg with a little melted cheese sometimes some salsa, I really like a soft boiled egg with sweet potato mash. (I've been craving eggs lately!) We buy those 2G greek yogurts with only 2 grams of sugar, they're 9 g of protein and taste great. If I don't have time, I make a protein shake with Ripple plant milk (high in protein and calcium, low in fat, calories and sugar) with Bariatric Advantage vanilla powder, a tbsp of peanut butter and about a cup of spinach, blend it up with a little crushed ice - tastes like a milkshake. Pureed Egg Salad (Keeping Me Sane)

LIke Tony said, you can substitute plain Greek yogurt for mayo - and I even know of people who use cottage cheese instead of mayo.

Pureed Egg Salad (Keeping Me Sane)

For a lower fat version, try replacing 1 tbsp of the mayo with greek yogurt and still use .5 tbsp of the mayo. It is a lot less fatty and less calories with very little sacrifice in taste. I use this for egg salad, tuna salad and chicken salad.
  19. sugar free popsicles, sugar free fudgesicles, Greek yogurt, or sugar free Jello topped with light or sugar free Cool Whip. one of the first desserts I can remember was on Thanksgiving five months after my surgery. I brought a thing of Light & Fit pumpkin-flavored yogurt for my dessert. I think I enjoyed it just as much as I would have enjoyed pumpkin pie - and it was way healthier!

    Breakfast ideas?

P.S. my standard breakfast is Greek yogurt topped with a few berries

    Breakfast ideas?

Yeah, my go-to on weekdays is a 30-gram ready make shake (either Ensure or Premier Protein). The increased protein (Carnation is 13g) would help keep you full. I drink mine around 7:30 and don't start to feel any hunger until 11. If you need something else, like a small snack to get you through to lunch, I would get Breakstones cottage cheese (comes in an individual package like yogurt does) or individual servings of plain Greek yogurt (you could add some of the Carnation powder to it to increase protein and make it tastier).

    Mushy food phase

Soups with little to no lumps, mashed potatoes with protein powder added, refried beans with protein powder added, cottage cheese, yogurt with protein powder added, ricotta bake, curried lentils, and occasionally some very tender shredded chicken mixed with a good bit of mild enchilada sauce so its nearly a soup consistency.
  23. Thanks Star618, unfortunately I am still having pretty severe gastrointestinal issues. And visiting the bathroom A LOT. It almost doesn’t matter what I try to eat. Clear liquids, semi clear, yogurt, cottage cheese. This Wednesday I am supposed to be moving into the semi solid stage but am still stuck between phase 1-2. I know there is NO WAY I am getting adequate nutrition because it just goes right through me. I have patch vitamins which have been great. I tried taking a bariatric vitamin yesterday and for the first time I got slightly nauseous and had to run to the bathroom. My appointment with a gastroenterologist isn’t until Nov 6th. That’s a long time to wait in this state. My regular surgeon again won’t see me and just said to modify my diet. I have done so much research on uncommon side effects of the sleeve but nothing jumps out that is similar to what I’m experiencing.

    Mushy food phase

Plain Greek yogurt mixed with pumpkin puree and pumpkin pie spice. Or butternut squash puree with a dash of curry powder. (I really love squash.)
  25. Thanks Starwarsandcupcakes, interesting that I am attempting to eat my first yogurt right now. I tried a bariatric shake with fat free Lactaid free milk and nope not good. Hope this yogurt settles nicely. Please accept this yogurt o sleeve of mine, and pass to your friend the small intestine slowly!
