  1. My insurance has approved me for a band to sleeve revision. My surgery date is 9/7/10 (5 days before my 5 year band anniversary). I wanted to thank everyone here for your kind words, understanding, support and advise. It has meant a lot!!
  2. I was a sleeve patient but I have zero restriction. I had good restriction in the beginning and lost all of my weight by 6 months, ironically that was when I noticed a change in restriction....by 18 months the restriction all gone. Needless to say nearly all my weight has been regained...I'm seeking a revision right now. Xxx
  3. Thanks mrslb5, I was wondering because there are a lot of revision patients I have been reading require 2 week liquid diet pre-op. I guess it depends on the situation of the revision and the patient.
  4. Hi there Same with my Dr. My revision band to sleeve is scheduled for Oct 6. No pre-op diet for this girl too. Fast starting at 10pm the night before Surgery. Duh! I can do that! Wondered myself this question. Thanks for posting
  5. Hi! I was sleeved on 10/1, and I'm completely new here! I was banded in 2005 in St. Louis. Banding wasn't my initial thought, but the RNY scared me a lot, so my doctor talked me into the band. While I did lose some weight initially (and then it helped keep the weight stable) it was not a good fit at all for many reasons both personal and physical. Mainly, though physically, the band ended up causing me a lot of pain in the port site. When I moved to Oregon in 2011, my now-husband insisted that I see someone about this issue that I'd been just "dealing" with for several years. I saw the wonderful doctors at OHSU and while they could find nothing inherently wrong with the band (no slipping, not too tight) we tried to work with it for a while but the pain was still there and the weight loss was still minimal. So, we removed the band in Feb '13 with an eye to do a sleeve revision. My doctor prefers to let the site heal up before doing a sleeve. I don't feel this is a bad choice, but I did gain some weight back in between the band removal and the sleeve, alas. Anyway, I just wanted to check in and say hi! I'm looking forward to getting down some pounds with you all.

    Band out!

Had my band removed about 20 minutes ago. No revision yet. But I feel fine. Same day surgery. Walking and talking. No pain meds either. Leaving in a few minutes. Just in case anyone is doing this in a two step process.

    Is there hope

My Doctor only hires staff that have had the surgery, and two of his nurses have had the revision, and are doing wonderfully. there success is what help me to decide to get the sleeve instead of the band

    Taste Change?

Most of the changes for me have been for the better. The only negative I have experienced so far is that my favorite protein shake pre-op now tastes TERRIBLE! So I have 2 pounds of it sitting in my pantry just praying it will taste good soon. Aside from that, everything tastes so much better, it's amazing. Each meal seems better than the last, which is a nice change since before I just kind of ate to live and nothing really wowed me. I've not really moved myself to full meats since my revision, so I'm not sure how I will tolerate everything well yet, but we shall see!
  9. I get what you are saying - but my stomach was not working perfectly fine. It was a bottomless pit and always and I mean always hungry. That paper on the 5 year results is interesting. I had read before about all the "long term" issues with acid reflux before but this sure does drive that point home. It was a very small sample, but pretty astounding that nearly half had severe enough reflux that they needed to remain on PPIs, and some even revised to RNY to solve the reflux. I had read elsewhere that the issues with the acid go back up again around 3 years out, so even people who seem to be doing fine might have it rear it's ugly head...

    Why mexico ?

The thing about Mexico is, you don't sacrifice care for price. I've had better care in MX (lap-band & revision) then I did with surgeries I've had in the states. Revision 1/31/13 by Dr Cabrera and Venezuela in MX

    Holy Heartburn!

Does anyone know why VSG patients have acid reflux problems after the surgery? I have never had any issues with acid in my past history... my revision surgery is scheduled for September... is this something that happens to a lot of people?

    Reflux and VSG'

I had acid reflux before surgery, though it was well controlled with a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). When I had an upper endoscopy done, the surgeon found a fairly sizeable hiatal hernia. One surgeon advised me that since that was the likely cause of my heartburn, and it could be repaired when he did the weight loss surgery, and I didn't have Barett's Esophagus (scarring), it was safe to have the sleeve. The other surgeon advised strongly against the sleeve, because the sleeve can make heartburn worse, and it if gets really bad post-op, the options for resolving it get pretty limited with the sleeve. Bypass is less likely to cause heartburn. It was a difficult decision for me to make, I really felt stuck in the middle. But I decided to proceed with the sleeve and hope for the best. (Kind of scary, since I'm self-pay, and I don't think I could afford a revision if it came to that!) Post-op I'm on an H2 blocker (Pepcid) rather than a PPI. The H2 blockers are generally less effective, and I am experiencing some break-through stomach acid, though it's not really bad. I'm trying to hold out and see if my body will adjust before I switch back to a PPI. Honestly, I think it depends on a number of factors. Do you have a physiological cause for the reflux that will get repaired at surgery like me? If not, you may be risking some miserable times with acid reflux post-op. Have you talked to your surgeon about why you don't want the bypass? I know some of my concerns were resolved after a good serious talk about bypass with my surgeon. Good luck, it's a hard decision.
  13. My surgery is scheduled for April 1st. When I got my date I was so excited and hopeful. Looking to my NRA journey. Mi was so disappointed with the band. Wasted so much time trying to work with it. So here I am so close to The Date. Right now I am wearing a surgical mask hiding away from my husband and daughter who are infested with germs (coughing, sneezing, fever. Hacking up all kinds of mucus). Wondering if the date of my surgery points out that I am having a cruel trick played on me. Will I get to the operating table or will I succumb to this dreaded illness. So here I am on this forum feeling sorry for myself reading looking for encouragement. I'm reading about people who have had the revision feel they art not loosing or loosing very slowly eating almost nothing. So right now I'm thinking what the hell am I doing. Will I loose the weight after everything? Help people. Throw me a lifeline here.

    Soup Question

mmmmm i love soups!! i always keep some in the cabinet so when i dont know what to have for lunch or dinner. also for the days when i just dont feel like eating it's in there. i've been craving my homemade chicken and noodles...gotta revise my noodle recipe since i'm not doing the past thing. you can always have bean soup or split pea soup. they have more consistancy then just a broth based soup.
  15. Melissa, I'm glad to hear that you have a new doc and plans to demand an endoscopy. Your complaints sound a lot like mine when I had eroded, though I also lacked the ability to swallow Water which was the only thing that got me in urgently! Certainly sounds like we have a lot in common and it'll be nice to follow each other's journeys! I'm just 29, but as my mother has always said, I'm a bit of an old soul I can really relate to the fears and questions you're having as a mom. It determines every choice in life. Everything becomes second to our kids!! I think you making the decision to finally figure out what has happened with your band and even consider a revision is just a sign of what a good mom you are, and I wish you all the luck in the world! One thing you touched on that I think is something that doesn't effect people as much now as it has effected those of us banded 10 years ago, is the total lack of understanding what the band is, does and means! I can't count the number of doctors that I have had to explain my WLS to. It's always a scary situation when your providers don't know anything about your special circumstances. And as far as that doctor suggesting a FILL?!? Lol wow! I am amazed. He should know more than anyone that a normal fluoroscopy, while helpful, can NOT exclude an erosion!!! Yes, sometimes they are visible via fluoroscopy, but not always, so that should only be the first step in clearing a banded patient of complications! So glad you're not seeing that doc anymore!!!!
  16. I just had revision surgery two weeks ago, also in Mexico but different surgeon. So far it's been a night/day difference from the band. Band never really worked for me. Lost 50 lbs over 3 years with only 20 of it really being from band and the rest just from me cutting portions (band provided little to no restriction) and dieting. The tool wasn't doing what it should have been doing. And, then I steadily began to regain 30 lbs - just like any other time I'd been on a diet. For me at least, the recovery has been about the same. But, the biggest difference I'm seeing so far is that with the band, I was H U N G R Y during the recovery phase. It was so hard to drink just the Protein shake and then progress to more solid food. So far, with this I'm not hungry at all. I don't even have head hunger (I think I'm lucky in this regard compared to others). I also can really tell that I have a much smaller stomach. Definitely need to take small frequent sips of Water and even drinking a Protein Shake takes me at least 30 minutes. Finally, I feel hopeful that this WLS will actually help me reach my goal.
  17. Kristina, I am in the same boat as you but you had a few more bumps than me. I was banded in June 2003 and I still have the same band. I am starting to have complications and I am petrified. I have a 3 and 1/2 year old boy and I am afraid to get this revision or even just a removal. I am 45 now and I don't want more surgeries to follow this one. I am pretty scared of the scar tissue that they might find and I have been feeling pinching sensations inside along with port pain and pain where the band is located. I am looking forward to putting this behind me soon. Best of luck tou you, keep me posted.
  18. Personally, childbirth was way worse than my band or revision. My revision was probably the least painful surgery I've endured. I had the normal gas pain, and a little bubble got trapped up near my collarbone. But, abdominal pain was honestly nothing. I was up walking, talking and laughing with the nurses. Now, for my gb surgery, that one had the most upper abdominal pain. The main area for my pain was where the port was located. During my revision, my surgeon took down and removed tons of scar tissue and adhesions so I'm shocked it didn't hurt more. Everyone's pain threshold is different, and it really varies. Most of Dr. Aceves patients refer to having little discomfort, and mainly gas pains from what I can remember reading. The drains come out before they discharge you from the hospital.

    Philly Let's Talk!

Hey Girl! Delco in the house! Jefferson is a great hospital. I am sure you are in good hands. I went to Crozer Chester for my initial RNY. Dr. Katz was good doctor with a great bedside manner. But he is out in Reading now. For my revision to DS, I went to Dr Krecioch at Fitzgerald Mercy. He is a good surgeon but I had an unusual amount of pain post surgery and I felt he wanted to divorce himself from it which was not cool.

    A New World

Gerd is definetely a commorbitity and you may find that the VSG may not be the right surgery if you already have it. The sleeve can make that condition much worse resulting in a revision to bypass down the road. I ended up having RNY gastric bypass instead of the sleeve due to Gerd. Bypass cured this disease for me along with sleep apnea, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. It also put my kidney disease into remission. I wish you the best of luck, just follow up with the surgeon on the commorbity and they can help you through it. You would also need to understand the required supervised diet. Many times it is 3 to 6 months and that would mean it would be next year. Once you are through the diet, then it takes some time for the insurance company to approve and then they need to find an open slot on the surgery schedule. So, that being said, it just might take you a little longer to get through it. For me, I had a 6 month supervised diet that began on 12/26 and I had surgery on 9/29....nearly 9 months.

Please go to www.wlsforum.com You have to register or you can't see all the boards. You won't get lost in the confusion there. There are many revisions over there, and they will treat you well. Post on the band board if you like and they will direct you from there. Tell them I sent ya. Good luck!
  22. I am almost at 6 months and I have heard the hunger comes back at 6 months so I will have to get back to you on that. I am never really hungry since my revision from band to sleeve. I eat because it's time to eat. I have a Protein drink when I get up, lunch at noon and dinner around 5pm. Head hunger is in the evening when I usually have a fudgesicle.

    Newbie to be

Hi Eddie!!! Saw this on my Facebook feed and had to come say HELLO! I wish we could ALL have your hubby's experience with that damned lap band. I'm in your boat, although I KNOW I want the sleeve. I was also considering getting the RNY, because I think I need that anti-cheat mechanism built in because of the dumping syndrome. However, I did my research and decided on the VSG because of the long term success numbers of it. I also see that the people who are happiest with the decision in my support group meetings are the ones who have had the sleeve done. (I've also watched my mother regain quite a bit of her weight with the RNY, whereas my sister has done remarkably well.) I wish you luck! Come say hello in the "band to sleeve revision" area if you haven't already.
