    I Need A Fill

    You are definitely suffering head hunger and will for several months, even after a fill or two. It is something you will have to figure out. We were all over weight, your body will survive without food and on our Protein drinks easy until you change over to real food (and probably longer)! When you feel hungry, drink something or read or talk to someone to distract that urge to eat. If it passes in a half 20-30 minutes, it was head hunger! Keep drinking your Protein Drinks and water!
  4. I just walked the butte with a friend. Little or no exercise for the past couple of months, but.... A mile up and down with 500 feet of elevation gain, it was still 88 degrees out at 9:45. I think I'm going to be sore tomorrow.

    Any Regrets?

    I had total buyer's remorse on days 2-5 post op. I felt lousy from the anesthesia the first three days and when I got home from the hospital, I was overwhelmed by having to keep to sipping schedule. I just couldn't wrap my head around what I had done to myself at that point. I also had major head hunger for the first week. But, by the end of the week things began to get better each day. I feel amazing at 10 weeks post op. I'm thrilled with my weight loss and I'm thrilled with my sleeve. It is a magnificent tool for weight loss. At this point, I only regret not having done it sooner.     Protein Q's...a lil help please!

    My doctor recommended between 75-90 grams of Protein daily. At the beginning, this will come from your protein supplements (protein shakes and protein bars), because the volume from your meal plan is so small, you can't pack much protein into it. For me Muscle Milk Light (vanilla Creme) worked well for the protein shakes and QuestBar worked good for the protein bars. I normally use protein bars when I am up and about and unable to haul my blender around to mix a Protein shake. I am now 11 months post-op. I reached my bottom at month 6. At bottom, my goal is to maintain my weight loss rather than lose weight. Therefore my focus is different. I can allow a few extra calories in my diet. My meals provide me with about 50 percent of my protein requirement. My protein supplement consists of one large cup of hot cocoa ("no sugar added" Nestle) in the morning and a large berry smoothie around dinner time. The protein supplements do not count against your meal plan volume limits. It took me a while to understand this. When you said, "I was told protein first when it comes to eating". I hadn't heard this before. I have heard that it is important to eat your protein supplement prior to eating your meals. The rationale is that protein helps take away your hunger so therefore you will not be tempted to overeat. When you said, "The only thing I know is I'm not supposed to have protein shakes after week 2...and I'm in week 4. They say they discourage the use of liquid calories after week 2" That is very strange. How are you suppose to get in your protein requirement without a protein shake. I have heard that they do not want you to drink liquids with your meals. But that is a meal requirement. But cutting out protein shakes after week 2 does not make any sense.

    PRE-OP INFORMATION

    every insurance company AND surgeon are different, and each may require certain pre-op things including: -apt with family doctor and written letter from them In full support of surgery -supervised nutritionist classes and on-on-one nutritional counseling that requires you to keep food logs, count calories, Protein, fat, etc. plus Fluid intake, Vitamins, supplements... - psych consult (my surgeon required more than one apt) and sometimes ongoing psych appts for counseling - multiple appts with the surgeon themselves -cardiac clearance, usually including a stress test - Upper endoscopy or EGD or barium swallow - Pulmonary Function testing and apt with Pulmonologist - MAJOR amounts of bloodwork including thyroid, liver, kidney function, lipids (cholesterol), diabetes screen including fasting blood sugar, A1C, blood insulin levels, various hormone levels, complete metabolic panel, CBC, pregnancy test, and more... - sleep Study and if positive, a 30 day compliance with CPAP machine (the machines have an SD card that stores the data of compliance and it is downloaded)... - Some require proof of ongoing weight loss efforts either through gym, trainer, formal programs like Weight Watchers, etc, and I have seen some require that proof for a 6-12 month timeframe - Required attendance to a bariatric support group for a period of time At the time of surgery, the hospital may also require a chest x-ray, urinalysis and pre-op blood work and EKG and more. These were my requirements. Luckily, I breezed through most of this within a couple of months and just wrapping up my nutrition appts! Like I said, they are all different. Then, there are also some insurance companies that barely require anything at all other than a BMI of 40!

    Who will you tell that you are having WLS?

    My husband is concerned that I don't want to tell people. But, it's a very personal decision. I don't typically discuss my health or weight with co-workers so why would this be different?   9. I have told 5 people. Two of them have had WLS, one is overseas with weight issues herself and won't be talking to anyone else I know and the other two are people I can trust not to talk and who are sympathetic despite never having had weight problems themselves. I have a part -time job and when I needed (unpaid) time off just said I was having a 'minor op' and no-one asked what it was. Initially I didn't intend telling anyone else that I had surgery but unfortunately I continued to have pain for longer than I anticipated so it was obvious that there was something wrong with me and people started asking what happened. So I said that I'd had a hiatus hernia repair - which is true, because that was done at the same time - and just omitted mention of WLS. I might let more people know farther down the line when my weight loss becomes much more noticeable - but to be honest my weight has always fluctuated dramatically with ordinary dieting and I don't think it's anyone's business but mine how I've achieved the weight loss. I have never discussed my dieting regimes with other people anyway - I think it's a very boring topic best avoided as it only draws attention to the whole issue.

    Cranky with a headache

    It's not going to be fun, but you get through it a day at a time. I weighed myself every day during this time... The weight loss kept me motivated. I just kept telling myself that if I had to make it through without cheating to prove that I was really ready for this lifestyle change. Good luck - you can do it!
  11. wendy's chili is my main stay--cheap/good/goes down/stays down!! have lost 100lbs--and was in Florida all winter!! am so amazed...never been on vacation and lost weight(30lbs) nsv's--had to mov the car seat up in order to push in the clutch/bought smaller sized shoes/bought summer clothes at the goodwill! OMG soooooo happy!! another 70lbs to goal!! thank god for chili!!

    Too few calories?

    When I went for my 1 month check up i was told to add snacks because I wasn't getting enough (about 600-700, I think). I was told to shoot for 1000 calories a day and no more than 1200. Eventually, I was able to increase my intake to that range and lost weight well on 1000-1200 calories per day. I was exercising 1 hour on a stationary bike (reasonable effort @ 500-600 calories burned) 5 days per week. Those numbers kept me in a calorie deficit over the course of my loss phase. Now that I'm in maintenance, I take my BMR and add back my exercise calories to get my number. That is working pretty well. I'm a bit under my goal now, but still well within the healthy range and feel like my metabolism is in a very manageable place for lifetime maintenance.
  13. I am very close to that category. I have bcbs , my BMi was 39 most of the time during the six month prep. I did gain a few pounds toward the end of the 6 months and got my BMi to 40. They discovered I had sleep apnea so I think that helped me get approved. If you have a BMi between 35 to 39 you need to have some sort of condition pertaining to the weight. Heart disease, sleep apnea, diabetes Hope this helps

  15. That's great news! I'm not usually so optimistic (ok, maybe I am), but I realized this is the fun, easy part. I know that's hard to believe, but once we reach our weight loss goals, we have to work to maintain. And success will be harder to measure.. Now, we have so many little successes. I can't tell you how happy I was the first time I was laying down and my stomach sloped inward.. I wanted to lay around naked!..lol Ok, it went back upwards and wasn't totally concave, but used to look like a beached whale. Congrats on the booth! And to everyone else who posted such favorable feedback - thank you. I am really glad if it helped anyone. I am so excited about all the little positive things that are happening that I wanted to share. People who have never had a weight issue don't understand how exciting some of these things can be for us.. (I can't wait until I fit into a seat on a plane comfortably... ) That's the great things about forums like this - we can share with people who understand.
  16. I had gastric bypass. The following has been repeated here enough to be... well... repeated enough here. But since no one researches old posts, here I am... My plan is 3-4 oz protein, 1oz veggies (or other) 3 times per day... Or as much as I can manage before I become full. I never counted calories or much that isn't described in the first sentence of this paragraph. This was my plan Day 1 through current (20+ years post op.) Currently, I'd say I reach 3-4 oz protein 1oz veggies for perhaps 50-60% of meals. The rest are meals where I can't come near my meal goal, I just stop when I max out for the meal. Perhaps 1% of the time, when the meal is exceptionally good and hits all that is good of an exceptional meal, that I might (very much might, because is is uncomfortable) push the envelope. The fact that I don't challenge my limits is why I believe my restriction is in the same place as it was about 3 months post-op. I can't eat much more per meal than I have since I have been 3 months post-op because I have rarely ever pushed the limit. My belief is the more one pushes the limits the larger those limits become. I simply do not push the limits, so I believe they remain narrow. Whether the limits actually exist as I said are perhaps a matter of belief doesn't really matter. My belief has kept me near my goal weight. So what I eat now is not a whole lot different than during the post-op period when I was learning how to eat again. I don't push my limits.
  17. I had RNY but it's probably similar. I don't go by ounces anymore - I just know that it takes about 1600 calories to maintain my current body weight, so I try to stay around there (or under if I want to lose a few pounds). And the above person is right - the number of oz depends on the food. I can easily eat 8 oz of yogurt. But a piece of meat? No way. Maybe 2 or 3 oz. btw - no one would be able to tell now that I've had weight loss surgery. They'd just assume I'm a "light eater", just like lots of my female friends are who've never had a weight problem. I'll go to a restaurant and order a salad or an appetizer. Or I'll get an entree and eat half of it (and box up the rest to take home).
  18. Kapu, I completely relate! If I have gone to long without eating (which is too often) I eat ravenously, but after 5 bites or so I'm full, an comence the next 5 minutes or loud angry burps!! Am I the only one who weights every single morning AND before bed!?

  20. True Results actually provides us with a book written by Mr. O'Brien, the gentleman in the videos. It's title is The Lap-Band Solution A Partnership for Weight Loss. He covers a lot of the principle information there. If you have access to the book, the rules are in chapter 11 pg 219-233.

    I have UHC they required a bmi of 40 and over or 39 and under with I believe two comorbidities, 5yr history of being obese, 6 month of weight loss effort (just weigh ins with my PCP) and a psych eval, and that I be enrolled in their bariatric program.   23. Hi Ljthatguy, Sorry you're having incision issues, I hope that clears up soon. I had my lapband removed in March 2022 with hiatal hernia repair as well. The gastric bypass feels totally different from the lapband, I have never felt any restriction in the same way. I never get stuck anymore it's more that my new tiny stomach gets full very quickly. That limits the amount I can eat. When I got to solids I was told to eat 2 oz (one large egg size) and, while that sounds like a very little amount it was enough. I was barely hungry the first month or so. I'm now eating more than my allotted 4 oz and my weight loss has stopped for that reason so it's not easy to stay on course and I need to get to the mindset of trying to eat as little as possible instead of seeing how much I can eat. Hang in there, I know you can do this!

    I was Sleeved at 70 yo!

    I never cared for fresh salmon but do love smoked salmon....my husband bakes salmon all the time so I tried it and was pleasantly surprised. I, also, like canned salmon so the taste isn't that far off. My husband is the cook around here and since I don't like to cook, it is fine with me. My cooking is good, however.....he does make some foods that are not on my diet but smell so good! LOL....I am having a very difficult time with night grazing....I do use a float weight belt to keep me upward and walk in the deep end...this summer has been so rainy and stormy more than usual. A Tstorm just went thru here now...Oh My Goodness, you just had a hurricane go thru your area....did you fair well with that? Not terribly the worst cat. but still can do alot of damage especially your area was on the "dirty side" east side from the Gulf.... Maybe we should email one another but I do not know where to find the personals so that it would be private or we could go to the "Chat site"...would you like that? What do you think? alese

    Starting to Love Exercise

    WOW...:thumbup: You are ding so good .. I too love exercise now that I have lost 40lbs since april 14th. I love to walk , aerobics, aquatics, swimming, Just keep moving even when I 'm on this computer. I get my 2 lb weights and work on my arms. I was 289 lbs at surgery, I was exhausted all the time:sleep0:. Now I have been exercising everyday. I am so happy , I am getting my life back!!!! Keep up the Great work and lets all be "The Biggest loser" of all. you are special and keep exercising and walking in seattle. your AWESOME!!!!!!!:thumbup:
