  1. I posted this in the general thread and then found this area that I feel like is more appropriate... I feel like I have to start from the beginning. I was banded back in 2008. I did fine for the first few years but needless to say over time I started developing reflux. I had my gallbladder removed because they felt like it was the problem. It ended up being my band. So I developed severe GERD and my band slipped. I had revision done March 3rd this year. First week was great, 7 days in my heart rate jumped to 160 and my BP dropped to 78/40. They checked me for a leak...no leak. WELL-- when I advanced my foods per my schedule I started to get fatigued after I eat...it went away until this past weekend. Friday I was going to the gym I think my blood sugar dropped because I felt clammy, numb, jittery. I felt better after I had eaten. I got a glucometer and about a hour after eating sugar (1/2 cooking Peanut Butter and teaspoon of sugar) my sugar was only 78 so I am not really sure how low it had gotten. before the sleeve I always had trouble with constipation. Not any more. And I thought I saw blood in my stool last week so this week I tested it and it is positive for blood. I got anxious after eating yesterday and I feel like all this crap is just causing me to be paranoid. I feel like its starting to cause me to have anxiety attacks because Im just afraid something is going to be wrong. I may even be getting depressed. I have felt ok since Saturday but Im just nervous...nervous that something is wrong. Maybe its my mind and I need to talk with a counselor or something but Im not sure what avenue to take at this point. Im probably over worrying because I was so afraid to have this surgery from the beginning just something about having part of your stomach removed. I have never had health issues like this. I have never had the feeling of impending doom like I did 7 days post op. I don't ever want to have that feeling again. Right now Im just thankful to have a forum I can kind of share my feelings with. My friends and family just get aggravated with me because I didn't tell them I was feeling bad sooner. I'm losing weight and I am happy about that but at the same point 2 1/2 months post op and I am regretting having this procedure.
  2. I have no revision experience, but I do know anxiety. It doesn't even have to have a rational base, it just is. You have had health concerns and surgery, so there's rational basis for your vigilance. Is there a counselor attached to your surgeon's team? It may be worth exploring treatment for anxiety as separate from the physical stuff. Keep your team informed of anything new or worrisome. You're going to be ok.

First of all, what kind of "support" forum would this be if anytime someone asked a question they were told to "not ask strangers" and "ask your doctor" I imagine the entire site would not exist or at least be minus a few thousand threads as that's what 90 % of us do here is ask questions to strangers. Second, my situation is pretty simple, I was banded and not only lost all my weight but maintained it for 6 years but bands being bands, it needed to come out, when it did my surgeon made my "sleeve" very large due to all the scar tissue which made it easily stretch out ( I know you don't believe they stretch) and I gained 40 lbs so before it turned into more I had my sleeve revised to keep from gaining more and continue with my journey. Not one of those things was impacted by listening or not listening to my surgeon or anyone else. Third, I started my questions because I found this thread interesting and because I noticed a lot of comments saying how dangerous it was and it sparked my interest even more. Like I said, I enjoy learning and research and i was looking for some helpful answers. Simple as that. Sure I could email my surgeon but i again won't get any actual research or proven statistics, he already advised I weight 3 months, 3 months is nothing, I'm not a big drinker, like I said, I was just interested in the topic and in knowing what others had been told, I wasn't trying to start a new battle in what already appeared to be a war.
  4. I was revised in 1 procedure and he said I had a ton of scar tissue. I was banded in 2008. mThe surgery took over 3 hrs instead of 1.5. One of the scrub techs was actually a friend of mine and she said they have never seen so much scar tissue. They had to switch out midway between the procedure to give a break. I kind of wish they would have recorded it because I would have loved to seen it. Weird I know but I work in the health care field.

    BCBS Federal: share your experience!

did you have your surgery with Dr. Halmi? Or are you still in approval process? I just started the revision process with him.
  7. @@lexiemia I am near Jacksonville - good luck with the revision. I just had surgery 12 days ago to a sleeve. I contemplated the band for a bit but decided to go with my "gut" - which was the sleeve. No regrets. @@Typhanee wish you the best of luck and hope this time you find your greenspot!

    1 night hospital stay?

Lexiemia I am having revision from band to bypass. I have huge reflux issues so bypass is best for me. Although i would have chosen it anyways.

New to site: band to sleeve

I too am having revision from band to sleeve. May 28 is my date. My band was successful for 10 years. I lost 100 pounds. Last year I had a virus and was vomiting. My band slipped. They had to remove all the saline and I have now gained 87 lbs. I am ill with myself for gaining but I guess after being so restricted for so many years I kind of lost it. Good luck and keep us posted.

    1 night hospital stay?

My insurance also covers one night stay. What sort of revision? I am having band converted to sleeve.
  11. Hello, I've been on her for a few months but haven't really posted much but have read a whole lot. My surgery date is this Thursday May 20th. I'll be getting the gastric sleeve revision. I got banded October 2012 & had little success. Lost about 25#'s initially & then nothing more. I struggled with the band & never truly was able find the 'green spot'. I ended up getting to tight & had a good portion of the saline taken out. My surgeon's 'bedside manner' was horrible & I did not want to go back but I did. I ended up talking to a new younger surgeon & he told me I HAD to stay with the other asshat surgeon. I refused. I continued to struggle with what I believe is port pain or possibly where I'm banded & decided to pursue the sleeve with another Bariatric center. I'm so dang glad I did!!! My insurance denied me TWICE & the waiting game SUCKS but I know it will be worth it in the end. I just got notified last week that I'm APPROVED... Stoked but a ball of nerves!!! Excited for the journey ahead
  12. I had lapband surgery in July of 2013. I had lost 180 pounds prior to surgery. At first things went pretty good, than they started taking away all the foods I had eaten to successfully lose 180 pounds!!! OMG if it isn't broke don't fix it! Thus I quit losing about a year ago, even though I work out and count every calorie that goes in my mouth! My trainer feels I'm not getting enough to eat. My band is considered a failure even though it has not slipped. However I have other problems. Now I have decided to have it removed and revised to the sleeve. Family does not support my decision. I turn 60 on Friday and my weight issues have me very upset. I guess I just need some input from others who have already done this. What can I expect, I need to lose another 50 than skin surgery and from there on to maintain. Just need some reassurance I guess. Thank you for listening.
  13. Hi, I was banded in 2010, initially lost about 50 lbs. but constantly getting things, including liquids, stuck. It eventually caused dehydration which led to very low blood pressures to the point that I couldn't sit up in bed without passing out. I had the band deflated, and regained nearly all the weight back. I am scheduled for a single procedure on June 8th for revision to the sleeve. I would like to hear someone's day by day experiences / feelings over the first week post op.

    Call the Bariatrics police!

Okay, does anyone have any information stating that alcohol is dangerous too soon after surgery ? All I can find is "it can impact you differently" in other words you feel it a lot faster and of coarse empty calories and the risk of transfer addiction, but all that aside, I'm looking for actual research showing it is a risk to staple line ect. My surgeon had no stipulations on alcohol following the sleeve and in fact said "it's a liquid" you'll be fine, I had 2 margaritas about a month out. However, I recently had a revision so I'm looking for information in order to make an informed decision this time about if I would want to have a drink next weekend while out of town for the Holiday.
  15. If you had posted this during the beginning of the approval process, I would have told you to let those people have it. I've worked in the medical field and patients that can be pushed around are pushed around because a lot of people who work in medical offices, not the doctors, PA's or people with actual medical education, have a minimal education and are exceptionally lazy. If someone is rude to you, you call them out on it right that moment. If someone wants to push BS policies like these, you explain to them that your insurance does not require that procedure and if they are going to insist on following arbitrary rules that are not required, you will absolutely go elsewhere. You are not just the patient, you are the customer....if they don't treat you the way you deserve to be treated, you let them know you have no tolerance for it, and you walk away. I have a doctor (not my sleeve surgeon- he was a tool) that I love and who has largely very competent people. A few of his front desk girls though are complete idiots, so instead of dealing with them, I just ask to speak to someone who is competent or I tell them to have my doctor call me. If someone can't do their job, I will happily bypass them and let their boss know exactly why I didn't bother going through his little chain of dummies. That being said...you're so close to approval, let it go until after surgery. In the end you are getting what you want and after surgery you can write them a very long, detailed letter and potentially a review online that should allow them to revise their procedures and their behavior.
  16. I had my revision (band to GB) on May 13th, stayed in the hospital until May 15th and have been recuperating at home since. The pain was awful immediately after the surgery, pretty bad the day after, bad the following days and it has been manageable today. I used the liquid hydrocone until yesterday but decided no more because... (TMI coming), I had no BM since the surgery and I was starting to get worried. Today I had my first BM and it felt like such a relief. I had to use Milk of Magnesia and Benefiber, but it was worth it (even just for the peace of mind). I'm constantly sipping in my 2 TBS cup so I hope I'm meeting my liquid requirements (I'm not tracking but sipping constantly). I'm having a hard time with drinking 2 Protein shakes each day. Yesterday, I managed 1 and a bit of another one. Today I'm still sipping through one. I'm not taking my Vitamins as of yet as my surgeon told me to wait for a few days until the stomach can tolerate it better; she did tell me not to miss my Omeprazole dose once daily for a month so I'm careful about that. I'm trying to walk around; though I live in a studio apartment so there's only so much space to walk around, but I have even dared to dance a little bit and it was okay. I have weighted myself a couple of times and I was a bit surprised to see that the scale went up since surgery. I have read a few posts of people freaking out about gaining a few pounds in the days after surgery and I can't seem to relate. I honestly do not care right now. This is surprising because my number one reason for having the GB was to look better (there, I said it). Yet, the scale not moving (or moving in the wrong direction) does not bother me at all now. I can only focus on making it through the recovery stage in one piece and as healthy as possible. I ventured over the "complications" forum and decided that it is not a healthy place for me right now. I'm glad people with complications have a place to post and get support and help but after reading a few posts, I got so paranoid and worried. I had to stop. I have had moments of regretting the surgery, especially when the pain was very pronounced. I still have these moments when I think that I could be full of energy right now and go to work and hang out with friends... but they pass quickly. So I hope I'm doing okay after all.

    Bypass process

About 4 months for me. The longest was the one month wait for the approval. Why does it take so long i have no clue. It should be 24 hours. Anyways June 23rd is my revision to bypass day

Need To Hear From The Veterans

Im sorry you have to go through that, I hope you find the support you're looking for. My point is only that with the band you may not need a revision because of the crohns but there is about a 90% chance you would need a revision from all of the many complications that come with the band and yes it's easier to revise than a bypass but it's still another surgery and surgery is always a risk. Good luck to you.

    1 night hospital stay?

I was approved for one night as as well and im having a revision. Doc says i might be there 4 days. They said not to worry about the one day approval. It is standard that the give one day. They will just call and have it extended if need be.
  20. I have copied this from a post I made elsewhere. Please bear in mind that I am a very happy and very successful bandit now 9 years post-op. I do not regret my band, would do it all over again and if I ever have to have it removed, I would hope to have a replacement. When I was banded in 2006, it was a miracle surgery. And for some people, who accept that they will still have to work hard, it is just that. It was and still is for me. But over the years it has become clear that serious complications necessitating further surgery are much more common than originally thought, some of these are avoidable by careful eating and by not keeping the band tight; unfortunately others are beyond our control. We used to be warned about band slips, leaks and about ( very rare) erosion into the stomach tissue but it turns out that a build up of scar tissue round the band (causing it to tighten) is quite common. It can be very difficult to get the right level of restriction and some people are tempted to keep it tight enough to physically limit food, in fact it was once thought this was how it should be. But this causes food to back up into the oesophagus and that risks problems such as oesophageal dysmotility which may be irreversible. It can also damage the vagus nerve. Quite a number of doctors have stopped implanting bands as they found the removal rate was unacceptably high and it was too easy not to lose enough weight. Revision from band to sleeve is not uncommon! We still need lots of will power. The band makes it easier by dimming hunger, but it does nothing for heard hunger and, contrary to popular opinion, it does not and should not physically stop us eating. If it does it is too tight! Having said all that, I love my band, I know many successful long term bandits in real life. My own experience has been good and so has that of almost all those I actually know and have met.

    Very excited!

So sorry about that surgeon!! I'm fortunate because I told my surgeon that I failed and he told me that the band failed me, so I had a more positive experience. I find it terribly embarrassing to have gone through surgery and couldn't lose weight with even that. I had mine in 2009, and now he tells me that at that time the band was THE THING and they were pushing it because it seemed like a miracle, but now only five years later they're constantly taking them out. I have my revision on Tuesday the 19th. By now you're recovering, hope all is well!

How long does the pain last?

@@Magnettaj I keep reading about this pain after revision, but my surgeon insists it hasn't happened to any of his patients, so I'm hoping for the best, but it's what I'm most worried about! I have my surgery Tuesday, and the earliest I'll go home is Thursday (they keep us for at least two nights, nothing by mouth--not even Water or ice--until the day after surgery and a test is done to make sure there are no leaks, then just water and ice for a day (only 2oz every four hours!!) and then on Thursday I can start slowly on Protein shakes, ugh!! Anyway, one of the tips I found somewhere was an abdominal binder. I mentioned it to my surgeon and he was very supportive of it and he will order me one while I'm in the hospital. I hope your pain gets better quickly!

    Flipped port

Has anyone had their port flipped? I had a revision sugery yesterday for this reason. I thought the procedure would be much more smoother than my lapband surgery 16 mths ago.
  24. Hi everybody. New here. I had a band to sleeve revision on May 5, and have had a lemon size "hematoma" under the incision where my port was removed since. It has started draining, at random times since May 12. I saw the PA, who went to grab the surgeon...he said "to be expected" and not a problem. Well, except that when it decides to drain, it's a pretty big amount...ruins my clothes, sheets, etc. Anybody else had this problem? What did you do about it? I see the surgeon for my 2 week post-op visit on Wed. My husband is worried, thinks we need to call.

How long does the pain last?

Hi! I just joined this forum today wanting to ask this same question regarding post-op pain. I also had a band to bypass revision this Thursday afternoon and came home yesterday, Friday afternoon. (I didn't even stay in the hospital more than 24 hours.) I had the morphine pump and was up walking around the hospital the following morning, getting dressed myself, holding down jellow and broth, and I really thought I was doing well. Flash forward to last night after the morphine wears off and I am crying in pain. I can't get comfortable laying down, sitting up, and walking feels like my cuts are being torn open. They gave my Tylenol with Codene, but all it does is make me groggy. No pain relief whatsoever. I've had WLS before and a Csection so I'm no stranger to recovery, but this pain is BAD. I can barely breathe in without my back tensing up in pain. I called the advice nurse this morning but still haven't gotten a call back. I just don't know how much pain is considered normal or expected. Since it's been a couple months since your sugery, can you give us an update as to how your healing process was? Thanks!
