  1. I'm 3 days out from my RNY on 11/28, and I'm looking for some ideas to help me get these meds down easier. I have 5 pills to crush and consume and I've been mixing them into no sugar added applesauce, but the taste is unbearable and I can't just add more applesauce to mask the taste because then I can't fit it all in my pouch. Maybe tomorrow I'll try adding them to a drink, but more spread out instead of all at once. Any suggestions?

    Yogurt?

Never apologize for questions! I like FAGE Greek yogurt, plain or vanilla. I also like the Yoplait 100 Greek Yogurts. I just try to find on that's easy on the sugars I have tried the Muscle Milk drinks, and like them pretty much. But, I have a dairy and whey allergy, so I cannot have them every day. (I can tolerate Greek yogurts and some cheeses, but no milk.) So, I use GNC Pro Performance Egg Protein powder. My nut gave me high marks on this one when we discussed my need to find a non-whey based protein powder. As for coffee...every doctor has a different idea of when/if you can add it back in. So, I would find out what your plan states. I had to ask/beg my doc to let me start it back just shy of 3 months post-op. Even then, it's not every day, and it's only one cup per day. But, that's my choice, not his. Hope this helps a little. Good luck!

    Surgeon shopping

I met with Dr. Taylor at ABMI (formally at CORI) last week. He works with Dr. Wood in Madison Heights. He seemed nice enough, but I have not been impressed with the response of the office to my calls. Also- the forms were outdated (e.g. had me sign consent form that said I agreed to have lap band when they only use the Realize band). I actually live near Toledo and will be meeting with Dr. Pop... at Barix in Ypsilanti tomorrow. I have not checked into Henry Ford. I used to work there and don't want my former coworkers to be able to see my records. Ypsilanti is closer and the office has been wonderful-- but they do not use the Realize band- lap band only. I had been told the Realize band was better but I didn't see the new AP band. So my comparison was only the Realize versus the old band at Taylor's office. Any suggestions- anyone go through Barix?
  6. Coops said it perfectly. Print it out & read it when you are feeling down. You are doing well. Many have said it & it is really hard to believe it (when you are in the middle of a stall or not reaching an arbitrary goal), but .... THIS IS A JOURNEY, NOT A RACE. You can and will do this! Follow your plan & enjoy the ride.
  7. Hi All...I'm 6 days post-op and the hunger is starting to set in. My doctor says water, broth, jello only for the first week and that's what I've been doing. I'm trying to learn when I'm "full". It feels like my pouch gets full after 4 - 6 oz of liquid, but there is still a "lower stomach" hunger. Has anyone else had this? It's very strange to feel like you can't drink anymore but yet deep in my stomach I feel a gnawing hunger. I wonder if this is just the way hunger feels now.
  8. Thanks Jack. I needed to hear that. I don't have the hunger, but I am bubbly, and it feels just odd. I needed to hear that it is going to feel better at some point. I feel bad for folks who can't be on full liquids to start. I've been lucky in that Doc said anything that'll go through a straw since Day 1. I think I did about 2.5 days clears, and I am on day 3 of full liquids. I think I'll be in this stage for another week or so before I move on to mushies. Thanks for telling us it gets better.
  9. Is anyone else starting their 2 week pre-op diet today for September 23 surgery?
  10. (I'm struggling to find stuff GG hasn't mentioned....) Taco meat (ground or shredded beef or chicken cooked with taco seasoning). If you can handle lettuce, add it to salad for a taco salad with a tablespoon of shredded cheese, a spoonful of light sour cream and a tablespoon of guacamole. Cold tofu marinated in soy or other Asian seasoning. Gazpacho (if you can have raw veggies) Hardboiled eggs and deviled eggs 3 bean salad Garbanzo Beans in a dressing of olive oil, lemon juice, garlic and salt/pepper Open face PB sandwich made with one slice Ezekial Bread and either reconstituted PB2 or Peanut Butter or almond butter, with sugar free fruit spread if you desire Quesadilla made with one low carb tortilla, low fat cheese and some hot sauce or green chile inside. 12. I just posted about this a week or so ago, I ended up ha ing an ultra sound and found out today I have gallstones. ugg. I'm 6 mo the post op, and not in pain yet, just a weird soreness. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using BariatricPal mobile app
  13. I have my surgery next week and am pretty much exactly where you started - same age, height and weight. How are you doing now? How has this whole process been for you? I am anxious to hear where I might be in six months!
  14. I haven't been keeping track of protein grams and just trying to focus on my liquids, getting my meds in and trying some protein shakes. Anyone have a # goal at this stage in the game?
  15. You tell me... Twice now in the past week I have a strange pain. It starts in my back below the right shoulder blade. It's dull and slow. It moves across my back and then to where I assume the band is. Last time it lasted about an hour. No position gave me relief. The remaining pain meds gave no relief. Is this what being stuck feels like? Is it gas? It was so bad I was headed to the ER the other night, but it quit right before walking into the ER.
  16. I drink 2 NitroTech shakes a day, one for breakfast and one for lunch. 110 calories with 20 grams of Protein in each. This was what my surgeon recommended for my pre-op diet and once I was off clear fluids, it's been my habit since. Occasionally, to reach my 60 grams of protein a day, I'll add some Deb El Just Whites powder to up the protein count. They taste like melted ice cream to me and satisfy me (with my current restriction) for between 3-4 hours. Try experimenting with the vanilla flavor by adding a little sugar-free Jello or pudding powder--orange makes it taste like a Creamsickle, white chocolate makes it thicker and creamier. For the clear Fluid phase I was allowed Water, 50% diluted unsweetened applejuice, tea and low salt broth.

    Thirsty?

The word gulping really reminded me of my early days. I was only having sips but I was swallowing a lot air. I was concerned thinking that's how things were going to be forever!! Thankfully the amount of air I was swallowing went down to what I consider normal a couple of weeks after surgery. It'll get better very soon and you'll probably forget about these concerns!

    Do You Feel Full??

I feel full on a small meal (3/4 to 1 cup) of any food. Its like I have eaten a big meal. If I eat one or two more bites I will feel uncomfortable.
  19. I had so many setbacks and hoops it took two years to get through everything. I was frustrated but just did what they wanted so I could get the surgery. They're an 1 1/2 from me and it was definitely inconvenient. You can always cancel if that's what you want. I will say that I'm glad I got through it and am going on three weeks out and 22 lbs down.

    Am I Eating Too Much?

I don't know what the dr. told you but since I haven't had a fill yet, I was told 1/4 cup to 1 cup per meal.. Meals are 3 times a day, with two Protein shakes. I've been having 1/2 cup per meal, Breakfast is just a scrambled egg.. I try and having something every two hours, so I start the day with decaf tea, then at 10 I have breakfast, 12 Protein shake, then 2 lunch, 4 protein shake and 6 dinner.. All the rest of the times I drink keeping in mind the 30/30 rule.. It's worked for me.. I always try and do 1/4 cup protein with 1/4 cup veggies per meal except breakfast..
  21. Everyone's program is different. Mine allowed fruits after week 2, and I ate tiny amounts of them. I got my Protein in first and that very little room for anything else. Measure your fruit. The best way is to weigh it. 100 grams ( a little over 3 oz.) has 46 calories. Only exercise I got at a month out was walking. I wasn't cleared for the gym till after week 6. Stay on your eating plan and the stall will go away. Lynda

    Diet while pregnant

I'm almost 7 months post op and I am 17 weeks preggo... I have not gained any weight yet, I have continued to lose... not a lot but still losing. This is my 4th child and I feel like this pregnancy is probably the healthiest out of all. I feel like a normal pregnant woman (if that makes sense) I just have a normal preggo belly... before I just looked like an overweight person. I habe had no issues with eating... my appetite has picked up a bit. I still get my protein in and I have had a few "unhealthy cravings" that I have given into, but nothing I feel ashamed about. I had an ultrasound on Wednesday and my baby boy is healthy as can be... so my doc is not worried at all. Good luck with your pregnancy!

    South Sac

Hi my doctor sent my referral to south sac on Aug 18. I still haven't heard anything from them. When I called them yesterday the secretary lady said it can take about 4 weeks to hear anything back from them. But everyone else I have talked to said it seemed to be like they got a call back within a day or two... Also anyone have any good or bad about south sac kaiser?
  25. I get it. There are other things that are questionable: 1. I spoke with another surgeon with a gold status on here - and a patient needing their own CPAP machine to bring with them for use with recovery is rare and done only in the most extreme cases. Since majority of overweight patients considering surgery also likely have some degree of sleep apnea - its not uncommon to experience some breathing difficulties in recovery in which the hospital will provide a CPAP machine on the fly for such cases. <<< Never have I had a complaint or noticeable issue with sleeping. I had my appendix removed and did have difficulty breathing in recovery...they hooked me up to a machine for the night (which I had to stay anyways) and that was the end of it. I was not required to bring my own machine first or asked to continue use of it post surgery. 2. All that being said - I made peace with having to have a CPAP machine of my own for recovery. What I did not make peace with is the requirement from the sleep doctor to be on the machine for several weeks (in which they would verify its use through information stored on its processing chip) before they would authorize me for bariatric surgery. It is very clear - that every doctor has their own preferences or concerns that they highlight more than others. This other doctor, thought what this doctor was asking was extreme an unnecessary. To my knowledge - no one has died from sleep apnea in a recovery room in a hospital. If they did - I'm sure the hospital would get sued 3 ways from Sunday.
