My post op diet says 7 weeks.

Just got approved for gastric sleeve and no need to take classes. Will find out my date tomorrow. Only took insurance 4 days for approval. Are most dates being scheduled 4-6 weeks out from approval? Did some of you get scheduled less than that?

It seems like alot of people don't do rice. Why is that? Also, I'm 3 weeks and 2 days out and I'm supposed to be in the purreed stage for another 10 days but I cannot stomach one more yogurt or cottage cheese! I had sushi for lunch...2 of them, so far so good.

i'm at 6 fills now had it last week. and for the first time i'm finally seeing the weight really move. i've lost 3.5 since Monday.. some if not most i think is Water related but my point is that it's pretty normal if you are doing just the normal fills where they add Fluid but don't do it under fluoroscopy to take a while. part of me wishes i had just done that at the start but the other part is thankful i didn't. As i felt more and more restriction i've been able to adjust to the life of a bander. Yes it brings with it frustration that the weight may not be moving as fast as you would like but in the long run it's healthier and you'll be happier with your band. best of luck.

I am currently in this boat. I was asked to recheck my A1C in 8-12 weeks (from beginning of January) here we are 4 weeks later and I haven't done much if anything. I went out and bought all the good foods for my diabetic eating plan, but have no motivation and or always unfocused. I know I have roughly 8 weeks left...just really need to get my head in the game, but I felt that way too when I got the news.

I couldn't feel my port after surgery but I had a gigantic bruise in the area since my pre op nurse thought it would be a good idea to give me my Lovenox in my lower abdomen... Anyhoo, 72 pounds later I can easily feel my port under the skin. When I touch it I feel pressure, not necessarily pain or tenderness. Since you're only 3 weeks out from surgery, your port site is still healing, so I wouldn't worry too much.

Been a while.... Feeling completely lost. I know what Im supposed to be doing, just cant get myself straight. Got through my first year and a half without any real problems, lost 115 pounds, felt good. Then started having problems seemingly out of nowhere.Have been having continuous problems the past few months with nausea and vomiting. Went to my surgeon, did the upper GI TWICE, went to GI, did the endoscopy and colonoscopy- showed only minor diverticulitilis. Still having on and off vomiting but i guess its a little better- had ALL of my fill removed last month and now I have GAINED 6 pounds. So discouraged, have been throwing up for so long and I guess i figured if im going to throw it up anyway whats the point? Obviously that was incorrect since I gained! Still getting nausous with just about everything I eat. I am exercising EVERY SINGLE day and I love it but I have completely lost control of my diet and im struggling. Cant get myself back on track and I really feel that nobody is listening. My surgeon didnt find anything so sent me to GI, GI found nothing and sent me back to surgeon. My friends try and be supportive but their suggestions range from "you deserve some cheat time, you have done so well" to "just get the band taken out, you look great and you lost all the weight so you dont need it" Well obviously I do since Ive had all my fill out for a little over a month and gained 6 pounds. Supposed to see my surgeon next week and I really dont want to go:-( Feeling like such a failure

Hi, I am 3 years out with the lap band and have just had an unfill due to what my surgeon says is a prolapse!!!! Why after 3 years? Had a major esophageal cramping session this morning and actually was going to go the ER when it suddenly relaxed as fast as it came on. WTH? I did have some reflux issues a couple of months ago but they've been managed so I am really discouraged by this whole chain of events. Really don't want to go through all of this again if I don't have to. My surgeon wants me to come back in 3 weeks for another upper GI to see if it will straighten itself out but he didn't look too sure that it would happen like that. This is so weird. I have no idea what it is supposed to feel like when the band slips. Anyone?

I've been reading several posts and decided to post my story to see if anyone has similar experiences. I received my band in July of 2008. I went for fills about every 2 weeks. I never felt restriction for longer than 2 weeks. It took a year and me switching docs to find the port leak. After years of arguing with original surgeon, my port was replaced. I assumed the whole system would be checked, but I guess not. I've switched docs and been receiving fills monthly. Again, no restriction. When they check fluid, it's not there. I was suppose to have 12. I had 4. Was suppose to have 6 now I have 2. They looked at it during barium swallow. No noticeable leak, but the NP who is training says" it looks poofie there. I was told I may have a pin size leak in the band. So here I am after thousands spent and 5 years with a band, with a possible leak. I've only felt 2 weeks Max of some restriction after fills then it disappears. I have a 15cc band and of course my new insurance has bariatric exclusions. My surgeon wants me to convert to sleeve. I'm not comfortable with the sleeve nor do I have the funds. Has anyone heard of a pin size leak from day one? The lap band company is trying to sell it off so I was told they're not reimbursing for damaged bands. Since my band I've been diagnosed with a wheat allergy. So I'm gluten free. I followed the lap band diet, quit drinking sodas, etc...What's very ironic is since the testing on my band last Thursday and being deflated to 1cc b/c of irritation, I have more restriction now than I ever have! They even gave me an injection to reduce the irritation. I'm at a lost and puzzled. Ideas?

For me variety is the key. I have a couple of core exercises, push-ups and knee bends, two sets of each, 2-3 times a week. Otherwise, I walk and run with kettle bells, bodyblade, walk through theme parks (I live in Florida), swim, bicycle with granddaughters, and anything else that seems fun. Moving is more fun the more the excess weight drops off. When you work off that last 40 you may be surprised about the difference it makes in the rest of your life. I have always dreamed about taking my old, experienced mind and put it in that body that I had when I was young. This is pretty close to it. P.S. My wife made a rare valid point, (kidding) lack of proper hydration can take the energy and motivation out of a person. Sometimes when you think you have it covered, you don't.

I'm not an expert by any means. I would think you have seen a dermatologist to check your scalp? Some people are destined to have balding. I personally find a few things helpful for my dry thin hair. 1. I take two caps of flaxseed oil daily as well as a multi Vitamin . 2 an hour before I shampoo, I rub olive oil into my scalp 3 shampoo with Chi shampoo 4. An apple cider rinse, about every two weeks. the flaxseed oil helps every inch of skin on my body- I swear by that one. I really noticed hair fallout after any surgical procedure, but it slows down between 4-6 months after for me. I was desperately seeking something to help stop the shedding, this routine along with letting my hair air dry, no color, no pulling into a pony tail, especially when wet - in other words, handling gently, has helped tremendously. Good luck, hope this helps you too

Hello, Just had surgery on the first of December 1st. I lost 8 pounds in the first week and I am around the same give or take a few pounds. The surgery went fine although I did suffer some side effects from the anestesia such as blurred vision and anxiety. I had the surgery done in another city so, I've not been to any support groups locally. So this may be great alternative! I do not suggest watching TV - as the food visuals are constant!! I began craving sooner than I thought and try to find something else to occupy my time. I began a few foods i.e. Soups and such in the second week (which is not advised) I've been careful - no vomitting or anything. I just cannot understand why it is advised to fast for so long - unless you are looking for rapid weight loss. I am no expert - I just feel like this only promotes the lap band success rate. Your thoughts?

Celeste- I guess I was bad about not looking into my surgeon to well. I was referred to him by my Baratric doctor whom I had been seeing for around 4 years. He has used the Surgical Institute Surgeons fof many of his WLS patients. I did send my husband to have his first before I did mine. Just to be sure . He does have a hard time finding the port, but is very good about sticking to it until he gets a fill in. We infact had an appt. last week and I have not needed anymore adjustments since Feb and I am down over 30 pounds since the initial surgery. I'm doing about 2 pounds a week. So are you going to be his first? I think I heard my doc say they need a procter in the room when they do the first few surgeries. Let me know if youhave other questions. It is the best thing I have done for myself! Good Luck! Larae

Receiving Fills While On Blood Thinner
jetsy62 replied to jetsy62's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
No fill, but not because of the blood thinner. He said I lost three pounds while sitting on my backside, doing nothing, not watching what I eat, etc. So now that I am released by the ortho to go back to work part-time, I am to get my act together, start walking again, and the lapband doc will see me in 6 weeks. If I don't lose, then he will give me a fill and just keep me at the office a little longer to make sure everything is okay. So, back on with my weight loss journey. He was right when he said I needed to get my head back on this weight loss journey. When the accident happened all my attention, concern, co-pays, etc. went to getting the use of my arm back. While I still have a way to go in that regard, I do have some use of the arm back and I just feel better in general. Off the pain meds, feeling more productive, just things looking a lot better than they have been. So, back to watching protein grams, veggies, a little fruit and whole grain and walking. The hardest part is drinking the water. Still getting in only about 1/2 what I should but will work on that. And a little extra incentive. The company I work for just hired a temp and she had gastric bypass 4 1/2 months ago and has lost 95 pounds! But she does not look healthy and I am not saying that to be negative about the bypass surgery. She is losing hair, she sleeps in her car over her lunch hour because she is so tired and her color is pale/ashen and comments about how everything she eats makes her nausceous. She is a wonderful lady and really is doing a great job temping. I asked what she normally eats in a day and she is lucky to get in 600 calories. So I am thankful for the band and just being able to eat what I am allowed to eat. I will lose slower, but for me this just confirms I made the right decision for myself. -
I too have lost and gained (like many of us - I'm sure). I also was afraid it wouldn't "work" for me! But I'm happy to report that it is working great! Don't be discourage if it takes a while to get started. I lost 17 lbs before surgery (11/09) and then managed to gain 7 of it back before my first fill (about 8 weeks after surgery). I've had 3 fills total and I'm around 7 cc of a 10 cc band and I'm now down 55 lbs. I also beleive I've hit that sweet spot that everyone talks about. I can pretty much eat whatever I want, just in very, very small amounts. I work very hard to get my daily Protein in first! My doctor told me from the very beginning that his goal was for me to be able to eat whatever I thought tasted good and lose weight and then eat whatever tasted good to maintain my weight. And so far it's working. So hang in there and get excited! It works!

Canadian starting process
Anilyn replied to pwh1969's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Mine was in a different order. Orientation session, then my first set of appointments with the nurse, dietitian, and social worker. My next set of appointments were set for 8 weeks after that (hasn't happened yet). -
2 weeks until New Life/Day 2 of Liquids Only! OY!
Kay Adams replied to MissMay's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
What did the liver shrinking portion of the diet consist of? I have been on a 3 week pre-op diet. Surgery next Wednesday. Consisted of protein shakes and 1 lite protein meal a day. Chicken and fish, salad. Greek yogurt, applesauce. Strawberries, and oatmeal. Been difficult but doable. -
Ways to deal with stress?
Grace55 replied to Suzi_the_Q's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Susie, you are balancing so much in your life, it is humbling. I will address your chronic pain issue, as a chronic pain patient it is important you receive the attention which is warranted. No one should ever be allowed to live in pain, it is inhumane & unreasonable. Some people cannot understand the diminished lifestyle, planning and multiple limitations chronic pain, not acute pain, inflicts on a person. You were given an appointment, 2 weeks away? Is there another Pain Management group or Pain Management Dr you can contact? I can appreciate and validate your pain and the frustrating process, however, if you are in intractable pain, call your primary, tell him or her what is going on. Your primary can treat you for a few months, long enough until you are able to see this Pain Management Group. Your primary will understand if you are an established patient. To wait 2 weeks is unacceptable. Please feel free to contact me if I can help with resources. Moist heat is more penetrating than dry heat, if you have not tried it, you may find that it offers more relief. To compound matters, your Dr thinks you have an auto- immune disease. I am so sorry all this is happening to you. For stress relief, would you consider massage therapy? A 60-90 minute massage from a certified massage therapist. The massage will relax your muscles, no doubt you probably have many muscle spasms which is a response to the body part that has been injured & in pain. Meditation? This may help but trying to relax while in pain can be a challenge. I agree, do not exercise or engage in physical activity until you see a Pain Management physician. A warm bath is also helpful, relaxing muscles and reducing spasms which can be very painful. Soft, calming music...sounds of the ocean, can be very tranquil, it will relax you. You mentioned a therapist. Is this a therapist trained in pain management? It is not a big deal but often this type of therapist understands your daily struggles that many never think about, only because planning any type of activity, even a trip to the grocery store must be planned. There are Pain Management support groups in most locations. This will help emotionally and mentally. Please feel free to write. I will be thinking of you - Grace -
Hi all, I'm about a month and a half from my bypass surgery and I'm struggling to be good on my food. My partner is an alcoholic and decided to go off his mental health meds a couple weeks ago without consulting his therapist or me. I've managed to get him to start them again a couple days ago, but it's been rough. Additionally, my special needs 6 year old has been home from his special needs "school"/ therapy center over insurance issues that won't resolve until at least the 30th. His being out of school coincided with my partner starting a new job, so suddenly he's not home with us and my son has been acting out a bit. To top it all off, my chronic pain has been flaring up and I have no medication to treat it. I use heating pads etc. but it's debilitating. My PC thinks it's fibromyalgia and I've been referred to a pain specialist but they won't be calling me to schedule for another 2 weeks. Meanwhile I can barely get out of bed and when I do it's excruciating. So my question is: what do you do for stress relief that doesn't involve exercise or alone time? I have a therapist I talk to once a week and I'm on mental health medication already.

I am three months post op and am just getting over a stomach bug with vomiting and diarrhea. It seems I can barely eat anything now, I fill up super fast and stay full for a really long time to the point that I am eating half of what I used to. Has anyone else had this for a few days afterwards? Is it normal? Is it almost like a pouch reset because I couldn't eat for a day and a half? (I am pushing fluids, just curious about food). Update - had my 3 mo post op appt and I am doing fine. I was told it can take a few extra days to get back to normal eating compared to before I had gastric bypass.

Post-op diet ideas...
elcee replied to DaChanginQueen's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm in Aus where things seem to be a little different. This is the list I have been given 500ml dairy or soy per day. e.g low fat milk, runny custard, plain or flavoured yogurts(no bits), drinking yogurt, soy drink, Breakfast Cereal drinks. 500ml fruit per day = home made or no added sugar juices. 500ml veg per day e.g home made or commercial soups blended to a runny consistency Avoid jelly, ice cream, cordial, energy drinks etc as they are high energy and have low nutritional value. This seems quite different to the foods that you are looking at. Seems strange that there are such huge differences between continents. I think the aim here is to get people onto proper nutritous food as quickly as possible and to avoid the so called empty calories as they are part of what has contributed to the problem. Good luck with your op. Mine is scheduled 2 June. I haven't started shopping yet. I figure I should be well enough to be out and about fairly quickly so will only get enough food in for the first couple of days. I have to start my preop diet in 2 weeks so have started shopping for that. I'm allowed to use a Meal Replacement program 3 times per day and have 2 serves of veg.Not looking forward to that part of the process. -
Hi Angie, Congrats on your surgery! I have slowed in my weightloss with the mushies phase also. I am finding it to be one of the hardest phases because it's just difficult to know what to eat that is healthy and suited for weightloss. To me the suggestions my surgeon gave for this phase just feel so completely opposite of everything I was doing before the mushy phase. But even still I have continued to lose with losing 5.6 lbs this last week. One key is drinking lots of Water and another of course is getting out and walking every day. One thing that we have to remember is as we increase the calories consumption we need to increase the exercise to continue to burn off more then we consume. I hope this helps. Best of luck!

After eating a big serving of ice cream (at a friend's house, because I can't keep the stuff in my own refrigerator), I'm feeling philosophical. Last weekend I ran into a woman who suffers from Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism. She is highly intelligent, but doesn't have a clue about how to relate to people; a therapist shows her diagrams of facial expressions and what they usually mean, and coaches her on tone of voice and the most basic parts of social interaction because they don't come naturally to her. She has to concentrate on deciphering things that seem obvious to most of us. I've been thinking about her the last few days. . . and I realized that I've been suffering something similar with food. Maybe some of you are, too. All those food signals that come naturally to most of the world somehow didn't make it into my wiring. You know what I mean: Eat only when you're hungry; you don't have to eat everything on your plate (as Allan Sherman once said, "They're still starving in China, and I got fat"); have just a taste of rich food; save Desserts for special occasions instead of three meals a day; one day (or weekend, or month) of overeating does not mean you are a failure, because you can start fresh the next day. These supposedly obvious suggestions are utterly foreign to my consciousness, as novel as my Asperger's acquaintance finds the idea of frowning equaling displeasure. I might know the basic theory, but I'm just starting to learn the practice. Does this ring a bell with anyone? And does it get easier?

Aww thanks so much for your response! I haven't really been tracking calories but I'd say they're anywhere between 700-900 and it's hard to find time for the gym. I have 2 kids work full time and go to school full time by all means that shouldn't be an excuse but it's really draining and most of my days are from 4am-11pm (if I'm lucky) I've been having this crazy craving for Cheetos which is weird because I've never eaten them before. I was never a chip person and now I crave them, I don't get it. How many calories do you burn at the gym? What do you do at the gym? How many pounds a week are you losing? Sorry for the questions but everyone in my family is thin and they just don't get what I'm going through.. Sent from my iPhone using VST
