    Getting the protein in

That's true about other foods. I just feel as though if I actually wanted to meet my goal for Protein, I would need to eat things with the highest amount.... most cheese has 7g (I hate cottage cheese, unfortunately), whereas steak has has double that in the same amount of oz. I have been having a greek yogurt snack each day to get in an extra 9-14g. I also unfortunately hate the taste/consistency of unflavored protein in things, but I guess I should keep trying to find something to mix it with that's bearable. I did read after I posted this that getting a normal level of protein at this stage really isn't possible. So maybe the answer is really to just aim as high as you can and not stress too much about it. I'm looking forward to be adding things like nuts back in - that will also make it easier.

    Getting the protein in

There are other foods high in Protein too. cheese, yogurt. To name a few. I'm having the same issues, but I talked to my NUT, and you can help by adding unflavored Protein powder to things like yogurt, cottage cheese, V8 juice etc. I am only required to get in 50-60 grams a day, and 700-800 calories. I'm not supposed to be on shakes anymore. They don't want us dependent on them for our protein needs. I'm not even close to goal in the calorie dept, I get about 400 calories in daily, and about 10-20 grams short of protein on any given day. A person can only eat so much with this tiny pouch. LOL Wishing you luck!
  3. I had my RNY done on 6/22. Recovery was a breeze and I'm back to work this week. I also graduated from the liquid diet to pureed food this week. Kinda confused on what I can eat but I picked up some thicker Soups for a start and of course, my bff Greek Yogurt. Today, I had some cottage cheese. OMG. It tasted AMAZING. Like - I cannot believe how great it tasted. I also have had this weird feeling all over my tongue like I've been sucking on a cotton ball...no matter how much I brush my teeth or how much Water I drink, it's there. I emailed my NUT and she suggested some sugar free candy to suck on. So I picked up some peppermints and they tasted amazing too!! I feel I'm eating for the first time ever all over again!! Also, who stalled out at week 2? The scale hasn't moved since Wednesday.

    May sleevers

I bought these small disposable containers with lids that you usually get salsa in at restaurants- they sell them at target and they help me with portions- I measure out my yogurt, tuna etc for the week that way I see what I eat and it helps with lunches etc

    June 30th Sleevers?

I like plain Greek yogurt with just a touch of honey - it's my favorite. But I also found some frozen Greek yogurt Popsicles that are the best thing I think I've ever had. I bought a chocolate and a sea salt Carmel and tried the Carmel one last night and about cried because it was so good. @@Ktprimo - I'm probably going to be trying a straw soon. I just feel like I drink more when I have a straw And I'm sorry your friends are upset- they have absolutely no reason to be, but I'm glad you met someone who knows what's up and who you can go to for advice

    June 30th Sleevers?

Awesome! So happy you can mix it up a bit. Oikos Greek strawberry is the best! (In my opinion lol) Just make sure you don't get yogurts that have fruit on the bottom and if you accidentally get one that has chunks of fruit or little bits of fruit in it, be sure not to eat them because it can be hard to digest. I had my own little victory yesterday. I decided to be rebellious and use a straw! Lol. My doc said no straws but I had to try something because I can't get my water in no matter how hard I try. I got a medium water at sonic (with their awesome ice) and managed to finish the whole thing in 3 hours. Before I was unable to drink 8oz in a 6 hour period. I had no extra gas issues or problems so I think I'm good to go with a straw.
  7. I was banded two years ago and I was doing so well feeling good looking good losing weight last year I. got injured and I had to wear a boot on my foot for five months drove me crazy however having a boot on I wasn't able to be as active as I would like to be and I felt my body gaining weight I was eating the same things I normally did except on some occasions but by the time I took the boot off wen't on the scale I've gained back all the weight I've lost I haven't gained anymore it's just been staying at the same number for the last three months I'm back to working out I did get a fill when I had the boot on but now I think I need an unfilled I feel way too tight some days. I can't even eat yogurt and I've been thrown my food up a lot Ive ever tried diet pills which defeats the purpose of you having surgery but just don't know what to do

    Liver shriking diet question...

My pre-op diet was sf applesauce, sf Jello, broth, 8 ounces Gatorade, one Protein shake, light yogurt and all the Water I wanted. I took in about 60 calories a day or less. You should lose on that as I am sure like the rest of us the amount of calories prior was probably pretty high. Good luck and good for you for starting now. You are right, the weight you lose now will put you that much closer to your goal!

  10. I'm five weeks out and I want a strawberry. We have AMAZING strawberries around where I live and I want some...I need some. Can I make them into some kind of greek yogurt pudding pop thing? Anyone know anything. I have some in the fridge that need to be dealt with.
  11. I'm exactly 3 weeks post RNY and the dr and nutritionist say I am doing great (need to keep increasing my protein). Last night in bed I turned over to continue reading my kindle and had @ 15 seconds of extreme dizziness and not being able to focus on the book, then I was fine. This afternoon after my nutritionist appt I went into the grocery store and on the way in, had to stop in the parking lot because I became dizzy and thought I was going to fall. It only lasted about 10 seconds.....I attribute that one to not have eaten soon enough, went in a bought some yogurt. When I came home, my husband took my blood pressure and it was 123/69 which everyone says is okay. Just wondering if anyone else has had these incidents, if it is dangerous, or somewhat normal? Just a little scared. Thanks for listening. I hope you can shed some possibilities on this.

    Cream of wheat

I did eat it on pureed - I couldn't keep down much during that time so I had to rely on whatever I COULD eat. You can add a sprinkle of Protein powder, a spoonful of natural nut butter, some Greek yogurt or some silken tofu to it to add some protein to it.
  13. There are several options for drinking stuff that isn't Water, but I would stay away from drinks with sugar in them. Try decaffeinated iced tea, crystal light, mio, true lemon, etc. Could you be about to head into a menstrual cycle? That can seriously mess with the numbers on the scale. Just something to keep in mind as you go forward.I can't say that I've ever watched my sodium. I mainly focus on the Protein and carbs in my food. During the soft food stage it seemed like most of the foods they allowed did have a higher carb content (refried Beans, yogurt, etc.) than the foods in the shake stage or in the stages after it when you can start eating more straight meat and cheese. Are you tracking your food? My fitness pal (MFP) tracks all the important stuff for you when you enter in your foods. It can make it easier for you to see where things are going wrong (if anything is).I agree with the other post. It can take a little while for the your body to adjust and for the scale to show progress. Even if you stay off the scale, I would definitely start tracking if you haven't already just to get an idea of where you're at on a typical day with carbs, calories, and protein.Great job on drinking/eating separately! You'll do great, just give your body some time. You're also in that range of 2-4 weeks where the scale gets weird anyway.

    1-2 week what to drink?

They make powerade zero drops... They are yummy!! And decaf iced tea has been my BEST friend... Especially considering the first few days I refused anything but water bc I was SO nauseated. Just 6 days out I stocked up on plain Greek yogurt, soups to strain, pb2, decaf tea, hint water(amazing) propel water, sf jello, and lots of flavor packets for my water. It's so important to drink your fluids!!!! Good luck!!! Oh, and I stocked up on stevia too!
  15. Yes yes yes! It's really kind of depressing but I wud do exactly your second scenario. I brought the best yogurt I could find and stuffed it in my purse lol when I went to the movies and bought a water. That really helped...I have had to deal with about 5 big celebrations so far so it's been difficult????
  16. I've seen reports of lactose intolerance - try cutting out the milk and only having yogurt to see if that helps, or add in Lactaid or similar to see if that helps. Good news is most Protein powders are lactose free so you won't have to give them up (getting your protein in without powder can be challenging at first) and it may not be a permanent intolerance.

    Heartburn.....

My reflux is getting worse. I wake up every morning between 5 and 6 am with acid in my throat. I have to get up and chew 2 OTC Pepcids then take my Rx Pepcid and in about 30-40 minutes I feel some relief. Guess I need to call dr to see about a stronger prescription. But I wonder what the heck is causing this? I agree about the yogurt. I think it is aggravatingthe reflux. I have switched to soy yogurt that I found at Whole Foods and it did not bother me this morning. Small steps. I just wish I knew what is going on with this morning thing.

    Feeling blah....

It is very hard in the beginning and I am not really getting a lot of Protein from my food choices yet, but I am relearning "satisfied" and getting used to textures. May not be the answer you are looking for but unfortunately "tastes good" isn't the name of the game right now. Saltines, while approved, may not be the best choice. Especially after something nice and salty like that, I'm not sure I would want a Protein Drink either. What kinds have you tried? Have you enhanced them with anything like some of the Torani sugar free Syrups? (I used salted caramel in my Premier Protein vanilla shake.) What have you tried to eat? The Ricotta Bake from TheWorldAccordingtoEggface.com is very good. Fat free refried Beans with some spices added in and a tiny amount of greek yogurt blended in makes it creamier and increases the protein. I have also been able to eat humus in small amounts, pimento cheese (with lowfat mayo), sugar free pudding cups mixed with unflavored Protein Powder, and greek yogurt mixed with a tiny bit of Sugar Free Fat Free cheesecake pudding mix and some raspberry sugar free syrup was my latest creation. Keep trying. If you can't stomach what you try, throw it out and try it again in a few days. It is really trial and error right now.

    Feeling blah....

Christina, I'm in the exact same boat. My surgery was June 16. I have started refried beans and yogurt to suppliment the protein drink, but still have never since surgery hit my 60 g of protein or 64 oz of water. Pre-surgery diet was 2 weeks of protein drinks only, and I did fine......but I could drink them much faster. Now it is very hard to get them down. I see the nutritionist tomorrow and hope to get some pointers. I'm sure this is what is making me feel blah also.

    Day 3 Pre-op liquid diet

Hi Ladyvalle, I too, am 62 and had my RNY surgery June 16th. I'm feeling pretty good almost 3 weeks out now, just a little sore and having a hard time getting all the Water and Protein in each day. I see the nutritionist tomorrow per my plan. I did 2 weeks Liquid Protein pre-surgery and it really wasn't that bad after the first 3-4 days. Just take it a couple of hours at a time. I was amazed at how filling they were. But now, since I have to drink it so slowly, I'm not enjoying it anymore. My refried Beans and yogurt are my best friends now. Of course you're nervous, we all are........but I am already so happy that I did it, the age wasn't a problem. You'll do great.

    Desperate for help re: eating

Next time your nut, doctor, or nurse tells you that you signed a contract and that too bad, so sad, you better drink your Protein or else, you need to have a conversation with them about malpractice. That is complete and total BS. Their job is to make sure that you are able to get nutrition and if you can't it is THEIR problem to help you fix it, not to tell you that you better choke down some shakes or you're out of luck. Explain to them that there is an issue with the shakes, you cannot keep them down, and if they are unable to work with you to find an appropriate solution, then you will be happy to contact both your insurance agency and your attorney regarding their complete and total failure to do their job. I worked in healthcare and doctors and nurses like to bully people when they think they can get away with it. Bully them right back. That is garbage and you deserve their help in finding a solution. That being said...I never drank protein shakes because they made me sick. Nothing is going to happen to you if you don't get all of that protein in every day. I was self pay so I was entirely on my own with nutrition. I went through the phases of clear and regular fluids and then moved on to soft food and regular food and I literally had maybe 5 protein shakes the entire time. They are disgusting. I drink them now because I like the kind I make in the blender. I use almond milk, because my stomach doesn't like real milk, I blend in a frozen greek yogurt, a little PB2, and protein powder and it tastes like a milkshake. The pre-made shakes are not yummy, but if you're creative with a blender you may like them more. As a note, I am almost 2 years out and about 6 weeks ago I had all my blood work done. Like I said I had no formal nutritional guidance, never got in all my protein, and largely eat what I want to (which doesn't include sweets or fats or much junk). I have maintained below goal since April and all of my blood values are almost exactly right in the middle of the normal ranges. Protein shakes are not the end all and be all and you will be fine without drinking all of them. I hope you feel better...and please go let your doctor, nurse, and nut have a piece of your mind. If they can't do their job, someone else will be more than happy to remove them from it or do it for them.
  22. Is it just watery or is a weird color ? Guys I keep going every hour doesn't matter if I've eaten something or not. My doctor told me to call tomorrow to make an appt for in a weeks time. I'm allowed puréed food already, but I barely find myself eating anything more than some yogurt or jello or a Popsicle or even laughing cow cheese. I feel so weak half of the day not sure what I'm doing wrong. Does anyone else have this issue ? I just made chicken with avacado puree and it's yummy, it's my first REAL meal. Also anyone having an issue with water ? I can't swallow it for nothing without it hurting.

    June Sleevers!

I am just over 3 weeks out and I met with my NUT last week. I had gone back to work last Monday and had bad stomach ache all day Monday and Tuesday. My NUT pointed out that maybe I was having too much dairy and that was the answer. I was drinking yogurt shakes and eating yogurt for snack and lunch bc it was convenient for lunch at work and it had lots of protein. I had been drinking lots of protein shakes but with almond milk that doesn't have any lactose so that didn't bother me. Now I feel great. My NUT also told me to start eating regular foods. Yeah. I can actually chew food. I made chili and put it into small containers. I had a tiny bit of London broil yesterday. I cut into really small pieces and chewed it to death and it was fine. Today I had some chicken and the same thing. Real food with real taste! Yeah me!

    Heartburn.....

Completely agree -- talk to your Dr. Hope you hear back soon. I'm taking 20mg Famotidine (Pepcid) in the morning and 40mg at night. I think it's still working itself out as I feel like I may have acid reflux as I type. It's s few hours before I can take my next dose. I didn't notice any issues the first few days. I've noticed that eating later in the evening may aggravate this for me. I think yogurt possibly aggravates this for me as well. I didn't have this issue prior to surgery and am hoping that it clears up as my body heals and I drop weight.

    Am I being unrealistic?

I don't get resentful or try to change anyone's habits, but I've noticed I've become much more aware of what people are eating. Like my husband (who's never had a weight problem). Yesterday we went out for Breakfast. I got a thing of yogurt. He ordered this platter piled high with pancakes and fried potatoes. All I could think was "good Lord - look at all those carbs!!!"
