Major Social Functions - How do you handle it?
MommyMeghan posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ok folks, I am doing a survey. I'm 7 weeks out from my sleeve and there have been some small family affairs but nothing major. My husband and I are going to a wedding tomorrow and I'm a little nervous. How do you guys handle major functions where eating and drinking are expected? (BTW - the folks at this wedding don't know I've had any kind of surgery so there's likely to be questions if I'm just sitting there sipping Water and barely eating.) As a side note, I'm praying there is something some what healthy to eat as well. just sayin -
I was given 2 weeks worth of MediFast food. That is basically 4 different Soups (which are mostly broths), powdered eggs, blueberry pancake(worst thing I have ever had), strawberry smoothie, hot chocolate, vanilla shake, and chocolate shake, and Protein Bars. Out of those options I am to chose 5-6 things a day to eat and that is it!

You're doing great Carol. I'm at 57 lbs down now. The last 3 months I've only lost about 5 lbs though. So so slow but at least its moving. Glad you're doing well.

How long to plateaus last? I'm 17 days out from surgery and the scale hasn't budged at all this week. I'm down 30lbs, 16 from surgery. Logically I know that it will eventually move again because I'm hardly taking in any calories. I think my body may be in freak out mode. I've been doing a protein shake for breakfast and soup for lunch and dinner. I've been walking and drinking a lot of water as well. For those that have hit plateaus, how long did it last? What seemed to get you through it? I'm trying not to get frustrated. Thanks for your help!

It's been a while since I posted...I am still losing weight. My surgery was on July 16th I've lost just over 68lbs and I am still going down. It seems that around Christmas/New Year I stalled for a few weeks (3) where the scale did not move, then out of the blue....wham, I was down 5 lbs.....then I gradually lost 1-2 lbs a week and have been stalled for the last 2 weeks, then all of a sudden 4lbs, down.....I guess our bodies have to be reminded to keep losing. I think that I have stalled at every major weigh point in my life....I stalled at 250 for a few weeks....but a few years ago I was 250 for a couple of years, it's almost like my body remembered that is was ok and comfy at that weight....then I tried all the tricks, workout, no workout, carbs, no carbs, more calories, less calories, and then all of a sudden it started moving down again. Same thing happened at 240 and at 238. I am finally down to 234.2 (yes the .2 is important) I will probably stay here for 2 weeks and then finally make it into the 220's....I haven't been there since 1998..... It feels like our body has check points and we have to somehow remind them that at some point there was another comfortable spot.....a few pounds lower.....

Great job. I sometimes get to obsessed with getting weighed. I need to put the scale out in the garage and go get it once every 2 weeks. Best of luck.

3 Years Post Op And Have Gained Back Most Of My Weight
BOB052212 replied to laurasweetlo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The choice is yours, I feel your pain, I had the bypass and gained all but 40 pounds back, just had the lap band at 270 pounds, however when o was going through the approval process, I realized that band or no band that this body of MINE is MY RESPONSIBILITY! From March 3 til my final appt. With my surgeon I demanded from myself to start eating healthy, and to SAVE MY OWN LIFE! I am happy to report that I went from 291 to 271 in less than 2 months and this was prior to my pre op diet for the lap band. I stopped fast food, eating out, and did 5 servings of fruit and 4 veggies a day, BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, YOU MUST GO BACK TO THE BASICS, LEAN PROTEIN FIRST! From my experience Me and my first surgery failed each other, you have to take responsibility for why you are where you are! If we that have gained weight back be honest our habits drastically changed from when we first lost the weight! Change your habits, if your band is now positioned correctly, go get your fills and save your life! I wish you luck, YOU CAN DO IT! -
I was cleared for all foods by my doc and NUT at 8 weeks. I tried corn on the cob at 9 weeks, and did fine. It was so delicious. I have had it three times in the last month. I can eat 1 very small ear, but then chose to have just a half ear the other times to be sure to have room to get my protein in. One half ear was very satisfying. Remember, it is a starch, so count the carbs in your daily totals. This is something you will have to be careful about. Half ear. Not often. Self-discipline.

I've been on LBT forever and hope to read it over and find some of the people I used to chat with on here. I just wanted to tell me story since it's changed so much since the last time I was on here. I got my lapband in May of 2005, so about 3 and a half years ago. I was about 263 pounds at that point. I lost down to 185 at one point, then got pregnant in October of last year. Our sweet baby girl is 4 months old now and I am around 220 lbs. I just had a fill and don't feel too bad about my weight since I just had a baby. If I was asked if I'd get the lap band again I would do it for sure. I have loved my band from day one. The band is not for people who are not 100% serious about losing weight though. If you cheat it will hurt or make you sick. If you eat the wrong thing it gets "stuck" and feels like crap. My band is tight as a drum right now and I'm on straight liquids. I'm trying to do a quick weight loss thing since I gained like 35 lbs from the baby. Thank you lap-band for stopping me at least 900 times from eating the wrong foods. I could never live without you!!!

I feel like every soft food meal I have trouble getting in my four oz. my dr told me my stomach is somewhere between 4-6 oz and that's what I need to be getting in each meal. I've been weighing my food. I made some canned chicken and it weighed 3.75 oz. I cooked it and mixed it with some sauce. I could barely eat half of it before I was full. I can't figure out if it's because my stomach is still healing or what. liquid wise I can take 4-6 oz no problem. But soft foods are another story. I'm two weeks post op today. And health wise I feel fantastic. Doesn't even feel like I've had surgery. I've followed my drs orders to the T. He said stick to canned chicken, or grilled chicken breast, veggies, fruits, fat free Beans, turkey. Basically everything Protein rich. Anyone else having similar issues?

4 day challenge... Am I truly ready
adrinanna posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This week I am on an annually business trip. This trip normally messes up my rhythm on diet and exercise. It is a week of eating out, drinking and food on the company dime. I am currently in the supervise weight loss phase which I have lost between 15 to 20 pounds so far. I don't want this trip to derail me. Today I did ok but I fly in today and survived airport travel. I have another 84 hours before I am back home. Hopefully able to get my grove back quickly. -

I took off a week. Surgery was on a Tuesday and I went back on a Tuesday. Could have used and extra day but it definitely was not traumatic and it got me feeling back to normal. -
Waiting to be called back for pre-op!

Today is the day! Officially 3 hours to surgery and Im so ready!! They made me come 4 hours early so the waiting is killing me!! -
interesting. I asked my surgeon about this and he said that apart from the 5 weeks immediately after surgery he did not feel there was a need. go figure. I am undecided. all my life I have been unable to wear bracelets or necklaces because after a month or so they irritate me and I take them off. Even now I dont wear a watch for the same reason. Perhaps with smaller wrists that will get better? alex

Everyone hits a stall in weight loss but don't let it get you down! Remember, this is a marathon, not a sprint! Even on regular diets we hit stalls. It's our bodies way of saying, "hold up, what are you doing to me?" You will get back on track, believe me! I agree with other posters though, your caloric intake should be around 800 and 80-90 grams of Protein. -
Constipation should not be a problem with me because I have irritable bowel syndrome and have had the runs since finding out 2 weeks ago that I was having it done yesterday. My concern is for the gas pain to stop long enough for me to be able to sleep. My husband is taking care of my girls tomorrow so I can sleep hopefully. It is 4am here in Maine and sleep is not working right now because of these stupid gas pains. I am going to take some pain meds soon since it has been 4 hours and see if maybe I can get some sleep. Anyways I know this will pass I just wish it was sooner then later....

The post op return to work
teacherstrube replied to nurse247's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I took off three weeks. I am a middle school teacher so I worried about leaving my student for so long. After I went back I struggled for weeks and missed multiple days each week due to terrible fatigue or dehydration. I think it really depends on the physical demands of your job. -

I'm 3 days out from my RNY on 11/28, and I'm looking for some ideas to help me get these meds down easier. I have 5 pills to crush and consume and I've been mixing them into no sugar added applesauce, but the taste is unbearable and I can't just add more applesauce to mask the taste because then I can't fit it all in my pouch. Maybe tomorrow I'll try adding them to a drink, but more spread out instead of all at once. Any suggestions?

Never apologize for questions! I like FAGE Greek yogurt, plain or vanilla. I also like the Yoplait 100 Greek Yogurts. I just try to find on that's easy on the sugars I have tried the Muscle Milk drinks, and like them pretty much. But, I have a dairy and whey allergy, so I cannot have them every day. (I can tolerate Greek yogurts and some cheeses, but no milk.) So, I use GNC Pro Performance Egg Protein powder. My nut gave me high marks on this one when we discussed my need to find a non-whey based protein powder. As for coffee...every doctor has a different idea of when/if you can add it back in. So, I would find out what your plan states. I had to ask/beg my doc to let me start it back just shy of 3 months post-op. Even then, it's not every day, and it's only one cup per day. But, that's my choice, not his. Hope this helps a little. Good luck!
