    seeing the port

I went to see my surgeon for the 1st review today. I asked him about the lump so visible due to the port. He said I am still swollen and once the swelling goes down so will my port. I lost 10.8 which is about 24 pounds since pre op. He is happy and so am I , Very happy!!. I did tell him I had started solids and he was worried with that saying it could be to soon but to be careful. He said he didn't ant me to worry though and that the band isn't my enemy but something to help me get to my healthiest self. I have already felt its benefits, It been over a week now that I haven't had any knee and thigh pain. I returned to woe and my co workers asked me what I have had done while away, they said the change in my looks was so obvious and that I looked 10 years younger!! What a compliment! ATM my band is my best friend it has helped me get healthier and feel good about myself bought up my self esteem. I am so glad I didn't listen to me fears pre op and went ahead and got it done. So far its one of the best things I have done for myself.

February Is Almost Over- How Is Everyone Doing?

I was sleeved on 2/10 I am doing great. Had a little bit of a problem today where I got sick and threw up. I am not sure what brought it on but I think we have had a flu bug going around our house. I am trying more mushy food but think I may go back to liquids again until I feel this bug is gone. I have been in bed the majority of today. I can't wait to get back to the gym and get walking.
  6. I had my surgery ON my 35th birthday - April 10, 2012. It was the best gift I have ever given myself. Started my new life on my birthday.
  7. ....If so, did it totally bum you out? Or did it make your birthday better somehow? Or was it just 'meh' either way? It's silly, but for some reason I'm worried that the combination of being 1 year older, single, aaand having only 10% of my stomach left could be 'the perfect storm' for an emotional funk. I'm being overly dramatic just for a laugh, yes. And there's a lot of waaay more pressing things I could be worrying about (and I am!). But nevertheless I'm still curious if anyone else has had a VSG / bday experience?

7 weeks out and a fruit addict...

There's probably going to be a lot of people respond to this and disagree with me but I say go for it. Get your protein in then have all the fruit you want. I personally did not fuss about my carbs too much - usually around 50G a day. But most of the carbs that I do eat are from fruits and veggies. I've taken the approach with this sleeve to eat as clean and natural as I can. So no artificial sweeteners or low fat foods. I figure with the fruits and veggies I get the nutrients too. Like I said, people will disagree but I'm 10 months out and 99 lbs down, 1 lb to goal. It's what has worked for me.

    Question dumping?

Same here. It started around 10 months out from surgery. Sugar and alcohol. I feel nauseous and clammy, and like I don't want to move or talk.

    You've lost enough weight...

I can totally relate to this. When people aske me if I will lose more weight, and I tell them that i still have to lose 19 pounds they start saying that I'm ok that I don't need to lose more weight and go on and on..... At first I noticed that people where really happy for me, but as I'm reaching my goal some people are starting to make comments that sounded more like jelousy or envy..... even people who are thin and mostly women.

    low carb vs. weight watchers

Isnt it funny how the topic of diet is such an emotive one? We're all prone to getting defensive about our choices. I always feel compelled to argue the low carb point because I really believe its unhealthy and not necessary. Why? What does it matter to me what someone on the other side of the world eats? And likewise, why would someone care if I eat 10 slices of white bread a day? But they do. I think we do pretty well to discuss this without fighting, lol. Really, a lot of what you like to do is personality dependent. Some people love the discipline of calorie counting or food group watching, and whilst I consider it dysfunctional dieting behaviour best left in my past, for others its a healthy focus and the way they like to live. My mother lives on weight watchers, she just is so used to it and there's nothing dysfunctional or unhealthy about her approach to food, OR her weight. I like to eat what I want, when I want and not following ANY program has not caused me to eat around the band at all because my motivation is to be fit, healthy and thin and I look at a Mars Bar and can see that that will not help me stay that way. Kudos to all of us for finding our own path.

    4 days post sleeve

I had a car accident 10 days after my surgery inAugust so had more swelling than normal. I struggled for quite some time getting all my Protein, but the NUT just had me drink a shake a day in addition to foods I was able to eat. That gave me 30 g immediately. My energy was horrible. At 4 weeks I biked and barely made 4 miles. At 10 weeks I went hiking and did20 miles one day and 10 on another. What a difference! You'll get there. Give your body time to heal. Walking will help immensely! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Hi June Sleevers!

Hi @@chelleshocked ... it's 4 weeks post op for me and I'm also feeling good! I can't believe how much better -- and more "normal" -- I feel from week to week. eggs are awesome, and so is Greek yogurt! A few days ago I made Eggface's ham, cheese, and triple onion bites (aka crustless mini quiches), and they're fab! You can substitute ingredients easily if you aren't allowed to have meat yet. http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/2014/10/its-world-egg-day-8-eggceptional-recipes.html

    hello from London

Yes, I suppose it is lucky - he's based in New York and has lost 175lb over three years - amazing. He says I can call whenever I need to but I feel a bit weird thinking he doesn't want this paranoid girl calling him everytime I have a question! It's weird about telling people because even though I have, they don't properly understand. One of my colleagues put a lunch appointment in my diary for next week which I declined and they sent me an email saying, oh just come along, pretend you have a headache and eat a salad which really riled me. I think they all expect me to come into work next week having lost 10 stone and wham, bam, there's my quick fix. Totally agree about us being in the same boat. How much do you have to lose?

    Liver Shrinkage

You've lost 10 pounds already. The liver is the first place it goes so you should be fine. Your doctor isn't going to close you back up. Relax and keep following instructions. You'll be fine. Good luck with your surgery and enjoy the journey. It's awesome!

    Feeling awful

Aww you can do it connie, this is the worst part, nothing compares to that pre op diet, i felt just the same, i was constantly in the bathroom too my bowels wouldnt agree with the pre op diet, i was also so emotional i cried every day. If it was a normal fad diet id have given up but look at what your going to gain from it a whole new and healthier lifestyle. How long do you have to do the pre op diet for? I only had to do it for 2 weeks and was banded 3rd july. I use to phone my dietician every day in tears and by day number 10 she was pretty harsh and said 'you have 2 options.... 1 - get on with it and do it and 2 - dont have the band...simple. those were the exact words i needed to give me a kick up the bum lol. So after that i kept repeating those words in my head xxx

    What's the deal?

I have had a lap band for 10 years and yes, you get hungry with it but I will say that I never felt hunger pangs and bad as before. I am considering revision to sleeve and I know for sure that there is a head-hunger that is in no way related to my stomach. It occurs when I have any kind of anxiety such as a deadline at work or even when I an anticipating something good. I have no idea how to rid myself of that and it may be what others are experiencing.

    Bypass vs. Sleeve

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5406732/: "The number of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomies (LSGs) performed worldwide as a primary bariatric procedure has grown exponentially in recent years, given the simplicity of the technique, the low complication rate and the good short- and mid-term results regarding weight loss and the resolution of co-morbidities. However, there are a limited data from long-term studies. In this study, a standardized LSG proved to be safe (no mortality and a leakage rate of 1.2%) and highly effective in terms of weight loss after 5-year of follow-up, particularly in patients with a low preoperative body mass index. This manuscript provides additional evidence supporting the role of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy as a stand-alone procedure for selected morbidly obese patients". https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4879937/ "Perceptions of the mechanisms responsible for the beneficial metabolic effects of metabolic/bariatric operations have shifted from being mostly restrictive and malabsorption over the last 10 to 15 years to being more neuro-hormonal in origin".
  20. Interesting point. Also maybe due to evolution the metabolism slows down since it would require us to use less energy resulting in us having to hunt and gather less calories to survive? Also, sadly, very obese people may not live as long due to an earlier death from a comorbidity of obesity. Honestly I always just thought that obese people are so much less likely to make it to old age. Sent from my Nexus 6P using the BariatricPal App I think that is what most people say but it isn't 100% true.Oh I understand, nothing is true 100% of the time, but according to my surgeon being 100 pounds overweight, on average, takes 10 years off a person's life. Ten years less than average life expectancy doesn't really give you time to go into a retirement home. Of course there are people who beat the odds, like smokers who live long, healthy lives, but they are not the norm. I do understand that elderly people lose muscle mass, and height as well, so they tend to shrink. And often lose appetite as well. That is the least of my worries personally. For the ladies

I had started mine the day before surgery. I was also on blood thinners. That cycle lasted 7 days. I had about a 10 day break and then it came back with a vengeance for two weeks… so roughly 3 out of 4 weeks I had a heavy period. Cramps were horrible with heavy clotting. I was told to watch my cycles and if it continued to check in with my gyn, but also told that it’s not out of the ordinary to have cycle disturbance early in. Also got the “very fertile” time warning but I have my tubes tied and my hubby has a vasectomy - so we are clear there.

    i need help....

Your body is probably holding on to fluid as you are still recovering from the surgery. Don't worry about it. You can walk but your surgeon should have given you some guidelines about exercise. If not, call them up and ask them. I wasn't up to more than walking, and not even much of that, for about 2 months post-op, but everyone's different. Some people start back at the gym sooner than that. Also, I was told not to lift anything heavier than 10 lbs for 6 weeks. That made bringing groceries in a team effort.

    Nsv!

Last night I had a meeting for my son's high school football team. I had not seen many of my friends from football since before the summer. It's only been 10 weeks since my surgery, but I got so many compliments on how great I looked. I have not felt pretty in YEARS! Last night I felt like Miss America! I also felt confident and happy. I am amazed at the psychological change losing weight brings on. For those of you experiencing stalls early out and stressing over them.... I have had two so far (am currently in one now) that have lasted a few weeks. Trust me when I tell you, your body is still changing for the good!

2 (TWO) periods in 1 month?!?

Mine was rather normal but last month I was 10 day late and this month I've had it for 14 days straight. My doctor said its because of all the hormone changes and its completely normal. I hope this helps!! Linda www.fatontheinsideblog.wordpress.com
