  1. I had mine removed 2 months ago (just over 2yrs post surgery). It was my first ever attack. That pain is horrendous & I was soooo pleased the pain eased in 45 minutes. So sorry yours persisted. I actually lost 2 lbs after surgery (once I git rid of all the fluids they pumped me with) & I’m in maintenance. I lost some of my appetite (came back though ☹️) for that first month so I wouldn’t worry too much about not losing yet. Plus exercise accounts for less than 20% of the weight you have to lose so not being as active likely won’t have a great deal of impact on your weight loss in a month. You can always reduce your calories a little if you’re worried though. And any fitness you may lose will come back quickly too. Sorry about your holiday but better to have your gall removed then experience another painful attack. Hope your recovery goes well.

    too much food?

I second the suggestions to track your food for a while if you’re not & speak with your dietician. Because we are different heights, builds, ages, weight loss histories, etc., with different activity levels, we also have different caloric needs to lose or maintain. At 26 months, I physically can only eat about 1.5 eggs & eat about 1200 calories to maintain but that’s me & what I can & need to eat. If you can eat more or need to eat more for your body to function healthily that’s fine. My plan was portion sizes & protein & fluid goals with no calories goals. I was also no bread, rice or pasta & only small amounts of carbs from whole or multi grains. Protein first, then vegetables then fruit. I stopped shakes at week 3 & haven’t had one since. I got & get my protein from the food I eat. Are you really hungry? Are you eating what you need or what you want? Or out of habit, or because of cravings or emotions? Are you eating until you don’t need more or until you are full (there’s a difference)? I still reflect on these questions to focus on why I’m eating or why I’m hungry. Losing 53lbs in 4 months is a good amount of weight - congratulations. You may be in a longer stall while your body plays catch up. Or you may be in maintenance - your food intake equals the calories your body needs to function. Have much more weight do you want to lose?
  3. Congrats on your weight loss. Woo hoo. Hiccups: Yes, I do but they are way less severe & pass much more quickly then they did before my surgery when my reflux would stir up or I’d have too many gin & tonics lol - the gas. Esomeprazole helps if they are bad. They happen now if I eat too fast, the food is a little dry or rich. Staggering: Your centre of gravity does change as you lose weight. You may even get lower or upper back pain as your body relearns how to stand & move about.(I had upper back pain for a while & I noticed I was slumping more until I got used to my changed body.) Do you have any light headedness &/or narrowed vision when you stagger as that could be some orthostatic low blood pressure. Wait a moment, hold onto something to ground you & it will pass as your BP stabilises again. New clothing: It can become rather expensive buying new clothes as you drop sizes but it does become a necessity when your clothes start to fall off. Try second hand, thrift or inexpensive stores just to buy a couple of essential pieces to get you through. I was pretty fortunate I had a few different sizes stored away so I pulled them out & enjoyed wearing them again.
  4. I would assume, too, if you are only eating a small fraction of what you ate before, that you would lose weight. It's probably just going to take a lot longer since you're not being strict about it. Do you track on My Fitness Pal or another app?

    July Surgeries??

My surgery was July 15th and so far everything has been going really good. My only issue seems to be my weight yo-yo’ing. I know it’s still very early and it’s an adjustment so I’m trying not to focus on that, but it’s very discouraging when I gain 2lbs a day then lose 4 and repeat. Is anyone else having this problem?

I can't make up my mind!

There are several medications available which are more effective than nsaids to counteract migraines. My mum used to take a cocktail of nsaids & codeine just to take the edge off her migraines which would last for days. Now she takes one of these migraine meds & they don’t even manifest into a migraine. Speak to your doctor about which one would be best for you. The no caffeine is usually only short term. They often ask you to stop a couple of weeks before to get over the withdrawal & then continue for a couple of months (though this differs surgeon to surgeon) to protect your tummy post surgery. Like @Creekimp13, I’m allowed to have the odd nsaid now. It is a possibility for sleevers but it is only the odd one not regular doses. As you lose weight, some of the pressure will be taken off your knee & may alleviate some of the pain you experience before you can have your replacement surgery. Whether you can lose all the weight you need without weight loss surgery & can you keep it off is something you need to decide. You know yourself best & you know what you’ve been able to do in the past.

    Any August 2021 Bypassers?

i had the same feeling and spent a week depressed, i spoke to my dietician about it and she said, thats called "the last supper mentality" and we cant think like that cause itll birth depression after surgery. She said we (me and you and everyone who has this procedure ) will still be able to eat what we like, EXCEPT in smaller quantities. (to keep from gaining weight) Sent from my SM-G973U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Driver's License

Wow, I just looked at my license and it's 100 pounds over where I am now. When we came back to AZ 6 years ago they just reactivated the license from 25(?) years ago, when the weight was a terrible, terrible lie. Oddly enough, it still has my height from 25(?) years ago. I've since shrunk by a couple inches. I don't want to be shorter on my license so I'll live with the weight. Tek
  9. So I have a detour on my journey. Am on vacation in Florida, just got here Sat. Sunday night around 1am I developed a horrible Gall Bladder attack. Called my surgeon back home and he said if it didn’t resolve to go to the Emergency Room. I waited 16 hours and it just kept getting worse. We went to the emergency room, waited 6 hours in the lobby, 7 hours in the Emergency Department then had to be admitted for Gall Bladder removal today. I am now here at the hospital until tomorrow recovering from laparoscopic surgery. Of course I an bummed it has ruined my vacation- no swimming, no Disney parks later in the week. I am also upset I will have to stop my weight training/ gym program for a while and be off work another 4 weeks unexpectedly. ( I have a job requires lifting patients). Hope it does not affect my progress I have made so far as I was working out a lot and walking 7 days a week. I guess I am lucky I was not on my next vacation which is international. Sorry for the long post. ☹️
  10. 1. Not really but I’ve heard it’s common 2. I had a period of time where my back was hurting a lot and I did feel off center- happened about the time I was losing a lot of weight off my stomach/front. I do think it was related to center of balance moving . A few months later and I don’t have the issue at all. I feel like running and rowing helped. 3. Thrift stores, I buy cheap things at old navy, and I bought way too much stuff once I hit “normal” sizes I’m now having to sell. Oh well, I knew it was stupid but I enjoyed wearing it while I could.

What is your 1st major milestone?

90s jeans are back in fashion! You should be good to go once you’re back in them. I finally got rid of my former favorite jeans that I used as a goal- they were from 2006, ultra low rise boot cut jeans. I might be nearing the weight to where I could have fit in them but the style wasn’t going to be something I felt like wearing out and about. 😬

    Driver's License

Probably even more funny is that I’m basically unrecognizable in the picture AND the description. In addition to weight loss, I also stopped coloring my hair. So weight is wrong, hair color is wrong and the picture is over 8 years old (Due to the pandemic, I renewed it last year without having to appear in person) Good thing I won’t get carded for alcohol 😜😜

    Revision surgery

I'm not sure where you're located but Dr. Ayoola (pronounced Eye Ola) is located in the Dallas area. I have a friend who had a sleeve to DS revision. She loves this doctor, and trust him completely. She's very happy with her revision. 14. I have a surgery date set (11/5/2021) I would like to start early with getting into habits of tracking my food, activity, weight and measurements. Maybe even add notes to log my mood. Is there an all encompassing app that will allow me to do this easily? Also is there a bathroom scale you recommend? Ideally I would like the scale to send everything to my phone.

I can't make up my mind!

It was completely worth it to me in all respects. I have bad arthritis too, there are alternative medications that are not NSAIDS, not to mention losing weight is much better for arthritis. They served me decaf coffee in the hospital post surgery. Most surgeons will not say you need to stay away from coffee completely, it’s just in the post surgery diet for a few weeks. That said, I was a die hard coffee drinker that absolutely had to have my big mug in the morning. I’m 16wks out and have had no desire to drink it - I now do tea.
  16. Just out of curiosity, does your insurance cover weight loss surgery? Ours doesn't, but since this is medically needed for GERD I'm hoping it will be looked at differently. Would love to hear from someone who is in the same boat.
  17. My surgeon's office appealed with the EXACT same language as the first request to go from VSG to an RNY which was denied. Hello month wasted, of course they would deny it again. What's that line about repeating the same behavior expecting a new result? Sheer laziness! 😡 I'm currently waiting on a call back from the appeals department at my insurance for clarification on one of the points of the revision criteria: Weight loss to 90% or less of ideal body weight If my understanding is correct, since I only lost 27% of my excess body weight and I'm a good 55 pounds from my ideal body weight (not even my goal, but I'm 35 pounds from that too and only lost 24 pounds total) I could be considered for revision. What I find is ridiculous is I have a few cm sliding hiatal hernia visible on my upper GI literally every time I breathe, hiccups countless times a day associated with that, GERD no responding to PPI use resulting in mild (so far) esophagitis, and documented dysphagia just with liquids on a swallow study done plus I've had vomiting with foods like meats that got "stuck" because my esophageal muscles aren't working properly anymore. All of which would be resolved with revision to bypass. Add in I have family history with cancer on both sides, including with my grandad and aunt on my dad's side who had stomach cancer (removed whole stomach) and esophageal cancer (multiple bouts) respectively, and this scares the crap out of me. I don't want to be on a PPI for years, which is not safe, or wait until I have 4 months of documented severe esophagitis that could turn cancerous. Not to mention what this could do to my asthma and high blood pressure during this whole Covid era, neither of which were resolved by the initial surgery either. Why does insurance have to be such a 🤬 ?!!

    Driver's License

I always put 250 lbs on mine even though I weighed well over 300. When I got down in the 130s, I had to get a new one, but I put 140 because I figured I'd have some bounce back weight (unfortunately, I gained more than that...). But that was the first time I ever I lied and said I weighed MORE than I actually did!

    Driver's License

I always thought that was weird, too. I didn't have to list a weight on my North Carolina driver's license, but i do on my Wisconsin one. I can see how that would be helpful to them years ago when they didn't have pictures on them, but now??

    Driver's License

It's crazy that some states require a weight for the driver's license. I've had a license in 3 states - PA, FL, and MA, and none required me to put a weight. Anyway, Congrats!

I can't make up my mind!

Most places don't make you stop coffee permanently - I have to stop caffeine 2 weeks before to a month after. But you can probably take imitrex for migraines, since it's not an NSAID. I take it and they didn't tell me I'd have to stop it. Or topamax, I take that too, and it helps with weight loss (has some not wonderful side effects like forgetting words, but I'm used to that now). You can also work with your doctor to find something that works for your arthritis, and it may get better when you lose weight and can be more active (depending on where it is).

I can't make up my mind!

I used to drink at least 4 cups of coffee per day, and I stopped the day of surgery. I haven't had any problems, though I don't get migraines. (BTW, I also used to have a double whiskey every night, and I stopped that, too.) I'm planning a hip replacement later this year. I was hoping to get some relief from the weight loss. So far, with over 40 pounds lost, I still need the replacement hip.
  23. Never told people outside my family and no one ever commented on my portions. They knew I was trying to lose weight (which I was) so everyone was actually really supportive “let’s order from ___ instead of pizza so Jenn can eat with us”

    Thinking about Gastric Bypass

Ditto! I chose RNY bypass over sleeve due to: 1) RNY gives slightly better results, statistically, and seems to be more commonly recommended for my age group (I'm 58). 2) I'm a twenty-year GERD sufferer, even when at lower weights. The sleeve can cause/increase GERD symptoms (you will find a fair amount of people here who had revision surgeries from sleeve to bypass due to GERD). I also had an older sibling who was a long-time GERD sufferer and ended up dying at age 61 of esophageal cancer. I decided to take no chances. 3) Bypass is reversible, sleeve is not. (Though there are very few instances when a reversal would actually be needed/done.) 4) I actually wanted the possibility of dumping as a "reminder" to stay on course with proper eating over the years to come. 5) RNY procedure bypasses some of the small intestine which causes mild malabsorption of nutrients/calories. This means that lifetime vitamin use is absolutely necessary (which is also recommended for sleeve recipients) but it also means that occasional digressions from proper eating won't be as detrimental to overall results.
  25. 1. occasionally 2. I haven't noticed it in myself 3: I bought pretty much everything except underwear and swimsuits at Goodwill and other thrift stores during the weight loss phase. I was blowing through sizes so fast it didn't make sense to spend much on clothes, knowing I'd probably only be wearing them for a month or two.
