    Struggling

I can't seem to get my head in the game! Banded on Aug 20 and after having a port revision on Oct 29 I finally got a fill 4cc in my 11cc band! I can eat anything. But can certainly go longer periods without Being hungry. I have not lost a single lbs since my first fill! I have maintained to the ounce. I haven't been working out because I could not due to the second surgey but am allowed to start again next week! I need to stick to healthy foods get back to the diet mentality any suggestions????
  2. Welcome! You will find there are quite a few of us former lap-band victims on this site. Be sure to look into the "Band To Sleeve Revision" topic on the main page, about half way down. We post everywhere, but there is a lot of information there. As Tiffykins said, the recovery is different - I am exactly one month out today and it has been more challenging from a diet perspective (its very strict), but I am so impressed with the consistent restriction. Once you get past the first couple of weeks, you can live more normally. Good luck with your decision and your procedure! I wouldn't want to say how much you could lose in that amout of time because it depends on how much you have to lose in the first place, how well you stick to the low carb guidelines, and if you have any other physical reasons you might be a slow loser. Like I said I am a month out and I have lost 26% of my excess weight. For me that is 16 pounds - for someone else, it may be different. Take care, Lara

    Weight Gain

If there is still restriction then there is no need to revise. 2000+ calories seems like a lot unless your doing some serious bodybuilding. I'm almost a year out and what I've realized is the the sleeve can't fail me, but I can certainly fail my sleeve. Back to basics. Maybe even counseling if you haven't addressed the issues that caused over eating before surgery? Whatever you choose, good luck!
  4. Hey guys just venting. I have been approved for a revision to gastric bypass from VSG due to severe GERD and just found out I have COVID. I'm super disappointed. There will be three weeks in between from when I tested positive to my surgery date and I've researched that people can continue to test positive even though they are no longer infectious. I'm sure my doctor's office will reschedule I'm just sad this happened. Not much I can do about it now. COVID sucks.

    band to sleeve question

HI, Yes Dr Aceves did my band to sleeve revision in one surgery. Had my band almost 4 years. Very happy with my sleeve and looking forward to finally getting to my goal. IMO the band is nothing like the sleeve but others might think differently. Good Luck

Do you suggest band to bypass???

There aren't a lot of band to bypass people on LBT so you aren't going to get a lot of comments. I can comment but I have neither band, nor bypass so take it for what it's worth.... My comment is to look at all four of the surgeries and not just bypass. Weight-Loss Surgeries Compared Oh and as for insurance, I looked into this when I was deciding on my surgery type. My insurance only pays for a revision if there is some sort of medical problem with the original surgery. Like the band slips or leaks or you have esophageal spasms or something. They specifically say they won't pay for a revision if your reason is inadequate weight loss.

@@keykey42 hi! I am having bypass due to me wanting to lose over 100 lbs and because I have Gerd (didn't want to take a chance of revision from sleeve to bypass if my Gerd didn't go away). My doctor personally gave his recommendation about what surgery he felt was best for me, after hearing some of my reasons for considering WLS. so undecided...

I wouldn’t tell you what to do, but there are a lot of people who had bands in the past having them removed or revised to another type of surgery. It is based solely on restriction (while the sleeve and bypass use restriction but also go further in that other factors such as gastric variables also come into play in assisting with weight loss).

    so undecided...

Gastric band - been there, done that. Stopped working and I never felt full. So last year after my weight went back up I decided to have the revision and get the sleeve but due to the build up of scar tissue (surgery was May 2010), surgeon ran out of time to do the VSG safely. So had to wait until 11/30/20 and finally all was completed. I was told he might have to do the bypass and I prayed so hard that didn't happen. I'm 65 and glad I did it. 10. Yes, I am still overweight and I am in my range but the way that it has been explained is that I have hit this point too soon and should not be losing weight at this fast of a pace. I journaled on my own after my Dr. told me that I would most likely need revision surgery. All of my blood work, which is done every 3 months, always comes back great. I kept a food journal on my own and I was able to slow it down to a loss of 2-5 pounds per month. I was blessed enough that insurance paid for my surgery.
  11. Was wondering how long people where out of work after revision surgery? I have a active job I care for sick children in their homes and go to college. Trying to plan things. Sent from my SM-N910V using the BariatricPal App

    Oh happy day!

Virgo66 yes, I had my band placed in 2008 and struggled with it to the point where I just ate junk to avoid getting sick. Even with the few complications I've had I don't regret the revision at all! I had my 6 week check up on Friday and i am at the lowest weight since I had my son in 2003.

    9.75cc in a 10cc band??

I might just do that, just to know. I know that they did do that in the beginning and it made adjustments a little harder, but not a big deal. I did get tighter after this last one, but it sure didn't seem to be that much considering I'm now at 10.25. I heard that you can actually get 13cc in a 10cc band. I will probably just hold at this point, and see how I do and then consider a revision in the summer?
  16. I had my band removed and revision to the sleeve on 3/13/14. I have been feeling great. Mt week post op appt is tomorrow. I have not weighed myself. You are not hungry at all. I have trouble getting all my protein in cause after I drink do much I am full.
  17. It also depends on what other health issues you have. If you suffer from reflux or Gerd the best solution is RNY as it cures that problem. If you don't, then the sleeve may be a better option. I cannot speak for the lapband other that I see a lot of lapband patients who end up getting revised to RNY or sleeve down the road for various reasons. You should definately spend some time doing research and understanding how your health issues may steer you toward one solution over another. If your clinic has a seminar you can take I would take it. They will go over how each surgery is performed and the pros and cons of each. For me personally I had my heart set on the sleeve only to find out my Gerd/ are flux qcould become worse with both the sleeve and lapband. I went for 2 more opinions before deciding what to do. Once I made that decision I knew it was the right one, felt comfortable and never looked back. I had RNY. All my co morbitiies (diabetes type 2, high blood pressure, reflux/Gerd, high cholesterol, and most recently stage 3 kidney disease) have been resolved. Also I can eat what I want with no dumping syndrome. I choose to eat very healthy because that is the food that actually tastes best to me now. I wish you the best of luck. Please make sure you take the time to understand what might work best for you given your current health issues

    Complications....?

Sure. I will share. I went in on 2/21 to have band to sleeve revision. The surgery should have been 4 hours but because I had so much scar tissue, it was 5 1/2. I started drinking fluids and eating ice chips that night. On Friday morning before I could go home, I needed to have a CT scan and a swallow study to check for any leaks. It turns out I had a leak in the staple line. They took me straight to a catheter lab where I had a central line put in. That same afternoon, I went back into surgery to have the leak repaired. I was in surgery for 5 hours. On Sunday, I had another CT scan and everything looked ok. I was put on antibiotics and pain meds. On Monday at 6pm, I went home. About 830 that night, I started to have a lot of pain in my left flank. I waited until 2:00 am on Tuesday to call the on call doctor (hoping tbe pain would subside). She told me to go to the ER for another CT scan. That CT scan showed I had Fluid around my spleen. They told me it should go away in a few days and prescribed me some more pain meds and told me to walk a lot. By Thursday, 2/28, I was miserable. I went to my surgeons office in tears and they told me to go back to the ER for another CT scan. We drove 40 minutes back to the hospital. This CT scan showed I had an abscess under my spleen that needed to be drained. I was given 2 options - stay the night and they'll drain it now or come back in the morning. I opted to stay the night. That procedure was about 2 hours followed by 2 hours in ICU so I could be monitored. I stayed the night in the hospital and went home Friday morning. The following week, my surgeon ordered another CT scan to make double check everything before I had the central line removed (they removed tve drain in the office). I went to the radiology clinic and waited 2 hours for them to tell me they didn't feel comfortable doing the scan when they didn't know what my surgeon wanted. My husband and I went back to the ER where I had my 5th CT scan. The results came back normal as did my white blood cell count (which I failed to mention was anywhere between 17-20 during this). They removed my central line and sent me on my way. I am now 5 weeks post op and beginning to feel somewhat normal. I'm still not getting in all my fluids or Protein and I can't stomach my supplements. I'm doing the best I can and I know once I can eat more solid foods, I'll be even better. Right now I 100% regret my decision. I put my life at risk for the sake of losing a few pounds (not to mention the horrible quality of life). My marriage is on the rocks and I lost 4 weeks of time with my 10 month old. I highly recommend anyone doing this to research every possibly thing that could go wrong and be prepared for the worst. Yes, I am alive. But there were days I wish I would have died and if it weren't for my son, I probably would have.

    120 lbs and plication?

I think everyone is being supportive. Sharing an unpopular opinion isn't a form of non-support. I personally have endured what happens to stomach tissue after it's sewn over, and with the few complications that I've read out, and the people seeking revisions, I think it's only fair to point out all the good and the bad. I could say that your statement regarding " I don't want my stomach in the trash" could be perceived as very insensitive and condescending, but it's your opinion and you're entitled to it. I'm extremely supportive of everyone regardless of their choice, but if asked, I'm going to be honest, and advise them to do more research. I personally do not think anyone should ever go into WLS thinking it's reversible. This is for life regardless if I chose the band or sleeve. Would I have chosen plication if it was available at the time? No, especially after reading the research stats, and other posts from over a year ago when it first started getting advertised. The sleeve is the 1st step of the DS procedure which has been performed for over 20 years. Gastrectomies have been performed for decades upon decades for cancer and ulcer patients. The research is out there, we just have to be willing to dig deep for it.

    Port flipped over?

It happened to me. I went in for my first fill and my doctor had trouble accessing my port. It was clear from the flouro that it had flipped. I have since had it revised and had a fill at the same time. I am much more sore in my port area this time than the first. My doctor says this is normal since he had to extract the original port and then stitch in the new one. I have continued to lose weight at a slow and steady pace. I attribute this to staying between 1100-1300 calories most days, even when I know I could take in many more. I eat Protein first and I think that is key to being satisfied on less food than I could eat. Tell your hubby there is light at the end of the tunnel and this is but a bump in the road. If I can be of any help or if you have any questions, feel free to PM me. Take care!

    Confused: Lapband or Sleeve

I researched gastrectomies for other medical conditions such as stomach cancer, and ulcerative conditions. It's amazing that gastrectomies have been performed for decades upon decades, and when you analyze the data on those patients, there is little to zero long term complications. There are even people that live normal, fully functioning lives without a stomach. I might have done this for weight loss, but there are long term studies, information, and data out on gastrectomies. I take a sublingual b12 instead of doing the injections, and my labs are pulled every 6 months for a minimum of the first 3 years. In almost 14 months, I've never been close to deficient and I dropped over 140lbs in less than 10 months with the sleeve. It only took 8 months for the band to destroy my stomach tissue. Was it in part because my band surgeon was a douchebag? Yes, but before it could be taken out and revised to the sleeve the damage was done, and couldn't be reversed. I am partial to the sleeve, but do not believe it's the end all be all to WLS. Every one of the WLS can be cheated. Hell, I know 2 people with DS that haven't made goal, and are miserably sick because of the Vitamin regimen, and huge amounts of fat that they have to eat everyday to keep their hair and finger and toenails from falling out and ripping and/or tearing nails. I know some people have success with the band. But, if I can provide statistically information along with my personal experience that will give them another option to explore then I believe it's only fair. Like I said, the stats for the band are out, there is stats out for the VSG. Grant it those stats aren't 10 years plus, but by the law of large numbers, the sleeve is coming out with less complications, and reoperation rates.

    Confused: Lapband or Sleeve

We don't know how many of us sleevers will have regrets or need some revision in the long term. I mentioned my 3 close relatives with lapbands all of whom are doing great. We also know several people who have done just fine. In fact, we counted 9 people off the tops of our heads and I'm the only one with complications. And my complication (hiatal hernia) can come back with the sleeve. I just figured if I was going to have a hiatal hernia anyway, I might as well have it with a WLS that will (hopefully) allow me to lose weight rather than a band that can't be adjusted and weight gain. I guess what I'm saying is I don't have strong feelings about one over the other BUT I would not base my opinion of the Cathlic religion on a forum for "ex" Cathlics if I wanted to learn about it. I would probably give the "exes" a viewing but wouldn't consider that the experience of the majority. Though thousands of lives are saved by seatbelts every year, you will have people who are against wearing them because they think there are a few cases where someone was "killed because of the seatbelt." The sleeve may be the very best surgery for you and by all means ask people with bad experiences and good with various WLS. But in the end, it's your body and your life and you have to make a decision that you can live with. I feel like I'm a bit of a pioneer with this surgery. I don't know what the future holds 5 years out. I certainly hope it's all good.
  24. Can you kind of walk me through the first day? Check in, tests, etc? Catheter? If so, before you are asleep or after and when does it come out? How long are you hooked up to an IV? Are you feeling well enough to walk to the pharmacy by yourself the day before you leave? Is there an opportunity on the pre-op day? Are you allowed to eat whatever you want for dinner on pre-op day? Is there a decent place to eat at or very near the hotel? Do they really not have wash cloths at the hospital? Did you have diarrhea on going home day? If anyone had a revision: On me, Dr. Aceves plans on doing a barium swallow test and an endoscope under heavy sedation on pre-op day. If you had this done, how groggy were you after?
  25. Hi Linda, I am having my lap band removed and my hernia repaired. They want me to wait at least 4 months before a revision. But my band slipped several times and I am completely unfilled and am having problems. I wonder if they aren't asking you to wait because you haven't slipped?
