    weight loss stall

Ok breathe. You haven’t messed up. First, because a lot of nerve endings have been cut during your surgery you won’t feel full like you used to until you’re healed. Now you’re on soft food you’ll likely start to feel full sooner as soft food takes longer to pass through your tummy than liquids & purées. But try to avoid feeling full. (You don’t want to stress or put strain on your healing tummy - remember all those stitches & staples holding your tummy together.) Because it takes time for the message to get from your tummy to your head, by the time you think you’re full you’ve likely past full. Make sure you eat slowly to allow time for the message to get through. Asking myself if I needed the next bite or just wanted it was a game changer for me. I still ask myself that question. Second, portion size is very important. What portion size were you advised? Mine was 1/4 - 1/3cup. Thirdly, our weight always fluctuates. Fluid retention, constipation, eating a little more one day, etc. can cause us to gain. Plus, there are stalls. Many experience the first one at about 3 weeks - can be earlier can be later. They tend to last 1 - 3 weeks. You can experience a couple of them as you lose. Your body is going through a lot of changes & it just needs a break to come to terms with everything. They do break. Just stick to your plan.

    Bearly eat

I haven't completely decided yet but my reasons are: > I really don't want the down time that you have with the regular sleeve. I like the idea of a quicker recovery. > I like the idea of losing weight at a slower pace. I don't want to get too skinny too fast. I only want to lose 50-60lbs. Of course there is that chance I won't even lose that much with ESG vs. with the sleeve the odds are better. > I feel like if I had more to lose I would definitely do the sleeve but it seems like it is a drastic move for that amount of weight loss.
  3. im going to be 3 weeks post op this Tuesday I'm going crazy i don't know if some thig is wrong with my surgery i fill i mess it up 😞 i dont know if im full i dont know nothing ive been measurable weight my self today same weight from 2 days ago has some one have been throu this????? im eating soft food know

    ESG on 5/14

Great you are doing your research. Typically average excess weight loss with ESG is lower than the surgical options as the volume of the stomach remaining is a bit greater than the surgical options, so I think you should be fine for not getting too skinny too fast. Some people lose more than the average of course, and vice versa.

    ESG on 5/14

Thank you for the advice Hop_Scotch. I am looking into Dr. McGowan as he seems to do a lot of them. According to this video he created some of the success rate has a lot to do with using full thickness sutures. But also most doctors are like salesmen. One will try to convince you their procedure is better and neglect to emphasize the negative points. I am not saying that he is like that. It is just my general opinion of all doctors. I am afraid of getting too skinny too fast with the regular sleeve and I like the idea of the slow progression with ESG but the odds of losing weight are certainly better with VSG. I realize both will require lots of work on my end. Either way, I need to do something. I have been saying I was going to do something for almost a year now. I have talked so much about weight loss surgery that I somehow convinced a friend to go through with getting the sleeve and I started the process way before her.
  6. Hey everyone I’m new to this site, but have been getting a ton of information from everyone so thank you!! I’m due to be sleeved on 8/10 and have a question. For those of you who have had weight-loss surgery how have you guys managed eating in social settings? Especially for those of you who have not necessarily told the people who would be in those settings that you underwent the surgery. I will be returning to my work and school environment where I’ll be around people for 10+ hours a day (including meal breaks that we do in group settings). I’m wondering how I can eat without looking awkwardly suspicious at the table. With the weight dropping off I don’t want whispers that I have an eating disorder! The best idea that I can think of is to tell everyone I’m on a smoothie kick and do the smoothies in a non-see-through cup, this way I can take fake sips and they won’t be able to see the level of the drink that remains after lunch. Any advice would be great, thanks!!

    July 2021 Surgery People!

I was the same way. I could always eat or drink more than I should for that stage. I have just stuck with the portions I was supposed to be eating and I have lost 50 pounds at 4.5 months post op and the weight is slowly but surely still coming off. You should be just fine.

    Well, here we go again

If you have a history of GERD, I would think the surgeon would suggest the gastric bypass. You might want to ask him about that. I first started thinking about weight loss surgery when my voice doc suggested it after I told him I wanted to get off the proton pump meds he had been prescribing for me for 20 years.

    July 2021 Surgery People!

Don’t get worried. I had mine in 6 July and doing fine. I thought after my first Greek yogurt I did not get it but the weight still comes off. I too a week after mine could handle 4 oz but think about that ?? 4 oz ?? I could drink 6 sprints in an hour and half before surgery and eat hamburgers ! you’ll do great !
  11. It will get better. It took about a month until I was 100% myself. And now so much better with the weight off, so much more flexibility. Be patient you’ll get there pun intended 😂

    July 2021 Surgery People!

I feel so fortunate that I did not need anything for pain. I've been uncomfortable trying to sleep as I sleep on my side --the abdominal binder is amazing!!! Once I put that on, I could sleep in any position I wanted. I got the NyOrtho one from Amazon. It does not roll down -it stays in position. Today is day 3. I made an egg since I figured I should have something other than the protein water. I could barely eat it all. I didn't get sick, I took small bites, but I couldn't eat the whole thing. It's sad --before surgery, I could have eaten 3 eggs with no problems. I did eat about 1/4 of Split Pea Soup. The Protein Water is Tropical Punch Flavor --it's really sweet. I added some lemon juice and that helped a lot. My weight the day of Surgery was 184. I'm 180 now. When I see the 170's!!!!! I'm gonna be so excited. Guess what -- something else has happened. Baby sister needs bariatric surgery but doesn't have insurance. She needs it way more than I did. I felt so bad the day of surgery going in knowing she was rooting for me but at the same time, feeling a little jealous. She always puts everyone before herself. After my surgery, her husband felt badly for her. He has decided she can have it and is being supportive! Hooray

    July 2021 Surgery People!

My surgery was on July 22nd as well, funny part is the same happened to me. I was scheduled for 10am and didn’t go back for surgery until 2pm, due to another surgeon having complications with his second patient. It wasn’t my surgeon fault. My surgery went well. I had terrible gas pain and was given morphine and something for nausea, but I never vomit. I didn’t have much of an appetite after surgery, so all I drank was sips of water. I was able to walk to the restroom and sit up in a chair. I was discharged from the hospital the next day. My surgeon said everything went well. I have to get used to my stomach feeling full after sipping water or protein shakes. I’m still on the clear liquid diet but trying to change over to the full liquid diet before trying the purée food. I’ve been able to hold everything down. The first two days at home, I had to take my prescription for oxycodone. The pain is getting better. I’m just feeling thirsty. I’m sipping water, but it feels like it’s not enough. I guess my body is used to having more water. My starting weight on the day of surgery was 206.4 and now I’m 198.2 and I’m 5’6.

    1 year 8 months out!

I’m officially 1 year 8 months out I’m still about 15lbs from goal probably would have made it by now if I hadn’t got pregnant immediately after surgery 🤦🏽‍♀️. My starting weight was 299lbs and I’m currently 174lbs I feel amazing but I definitely still feel like I look fat. Even though I’m not to goal I definitely feel great that I did this and have zero regrets my family constantly tell me I look great and not to lose more. The only regret I have is not doing it sooner! I go to the gym 3x a week alone then 2x with my trainer. I love the gym I try to get everyone I know to go with me lol. I can’t wait to get to my goal to celebrate with a tummy tuck 😂.

    Revision 318

Don't assume rudeness when none was intended. You did say "Surgeons office said 2 weeks liquid" which is easily construed as the surgeon's instructions. It looked like you were trying to avoid the liquid diet. Sorry we misinterpreted your post. Good luck with tour revision. I hope they give you very clear directives going forward. May I recommend a book to you? Success Habits of Weight Loss Surgery Patients by Colloon M. Cook.

    slowwwww weight loss

I can sooo understand and sympathize with you! I have almost exact issue. I’m 54, 5’1”, insulin resistant, was always on restricted calories and barely lost no matter what I did. I started 2 week pre-op liquid diet at 198 lbs. I lost 5 lbs in two weeks of optifast 800 calories only. No cheating. So SW was 193 on 5/27 (Bypass). In this past 2 months I have lost 14 lbs. so now 179. I was having 600 cal of pretty much all protein first month. (70-80) but absolutely no energy! In fact I’d call it fatigue! So no exercise. Nutritionist said for my size I was right on target...nothing wrong. Met w surgeon and he said first month body is whacky and “they don’t actually pay attention to weight loss”. If I I tried upping calories to 700-800 and kept up w that good protein and add some good carbs I should be fine. I have finally gotten some energy back and started walking and bands. But the fact remains...I’ve only lost 14 lbs and trying not to be dejected. I’m soo happy for everyone losing at great rates and having that amazing feeling. I just feel no matter what I do, even having my guts rearranged, I’m doomed. I’ve been scared to get on scale in a week cause it’s so painfully slow and that the surgery may not work on me. This is supposed to be the golden losing period. I worry about after the year is up. Will I be back to same? I keep trying to talk myself off the ledge and just keep chugging and trying my absolute best and think slow and steady wins the race!!! If you’d like to talk more, PM me. Try to be positive and just keep going! Really what choice do we have? Hehe. Thanks for letting me vent.

    Weight loss

Okay. I thought I was going crazy, because I barley eat now. So why no weight loss? Also, do you feel like food is stuck on your throat and won't go down and you can't bring it up?
  18. Hello everyone! I'm new to the forum, and I am two weeks post-op. After surgery, I feel like my surgeon lacks the support I need. So, if I have a question I kind of refrain from asking him. So I thought I would ask on here. Q: I am almost 3 weeks post op, and I stop losing weight. The day of surgery my weight was 251 and a week later I was 240. Now, my weight is just sitting at 241 no movement. I drink water and broth mostly. I do protein shakes as well. Anyone else experience this?
  19. like kristieshannon, I also did what I had to do and followed the guidelines to a "t", esp that first year, because I'd been fat for six decades and I was done with it. I was going to do what I had to get down to a more normal weight (which for me at the start was anything under 200 lbs - but I ended up losing quite a bit more than that). the difference between this and other diets is that this time my effort actually paid off. It worked. Even though it wasn't easy due to ingrained habits (psychological), at least I wasn't fighting biology every step of the way (physical). I'd also agree it might be worth it to see your dietitian and a therapist who understands bariatric surgery and/or disordered eating. A lot of us have done that and find it helpful.

    Very discouraged after sleeve

In short, yes! I follow the guidelines I was given. Very strictly at first. Now at nearly two years out and at goal not as strictly, but still within my maintenance calories. That doesn’t mean I didn’t ever “slip” but it was rare during weight loss phase. I figured I did something drastic, went through a major surgery and I wasn’t going to mess it up. I’d suggest tracking what you eat vigilantly, making an appointment to see your nutritionist to review your plan and come up with options that work for you, and consider therapy. Come here often for support! Best of luck to you ❤️
  21. Can totally relate ( I am now 6mth post op vsg) at 6 weeks it felt I was working hard and getting no where. Try taking your measurements Even when I am not loosing inches have definitely gone. My weight pre pre op! 135 ( fast forward 1 year delay due to no ops covid) At surgery 119 At 6 weeks post op 111 I have just started lap swimming 1 hr 4 times a week and am at 107 Not earth shattering but circulation bp and liver have improved so that's good Slow its much harder to binge when I'm down (I've tried!!) My advice ( for what it's worth!) Is look for the positives!! Protein is a ( insert appropriate word!) I've taken to using unflavoured whey protein powder in soup coffee and orange juice 2 or 3 times a day as mini meals ( not sure of kosher status of whey powder that would be an added problem) Then one proper food meal What was your pre op surgery and current weight

    What Led To Revision

Like the others, it was a lap-band failure for me. Ironically, I had it for twelve years before having it removed. I had horrible acid reflux and never got the adjustments just right. After a while, I stopped going for fills/adjustments and regained the weight. Having said that, I have been successful with my revision. However, I am all in with exercise and eating better. No matter which surgery you have, the honeymoon period will wear off and when it does, you better be in position with good habits formed or you will see the weight creep back. I’ve maintained over 110+ lb weight loss for over three years, however, it’s no longer the surgery at work, but me as I can now eat about 90% of what I use to be able to eat. So maintenance has definitely been the “natural” way.
  23. Hi everyone! I would really appreciate some help. I am 6 weeks past my sleeve surgery. I'm am very discouraged and disappointed. I lost about 20 lbs in the beginning, only because of the pre op diet where I barely ate anything and the 2 weeks after the surgery but it has been downhill from there. I know the sleeve is "not a magic solution, its a tool" and so on! I've heard it all too many times. But I would assume that if I eat like ten percent of what I used to eat I would lose weight, but I haven't. I do eat starches and foods that I may not supposed to, but much less than before. I am really struggling with dieting. If I didn't struggle with dieting, I wouldn't get to the point that I need surgery! I find it hard to believe that all people who are over weight to the point that they need surgery, all of a sudden magically changed their mindset after surgery and started to be able to eat the right foods. I don't know how to do it. I may not eat the "right" foods, but I don't eat terrible foods. I don't eat more than I can tolerate, I don't eat ice cream or milkshakes or things like that. I do eat my sweet cereal, my avocado, my rice, grits etc. I find it nearly impossible to eat all this protein. I hate all fishes. I'm Jewish and Kosher so cant eat seafood. I don't like chicken salad. Very limited in the proteins that I can eat. How much cottage cheese and yogurt can a person eat a day? I am so frustrated and don't know what to do, I am very curious to know if all these people who lose so much weight after surgery is because they actually followed the guidelines, and if so, how all of a sudden they were able to change after all these years of not succeeding to eat the right foods. What discourages me the most, is that it seems that it is all about will power, with or without surgery. If dieting and controlling what eat is the only way to lose weight with or without it, what is the surgery good for? I am so discouraged. Please help! Thanks so much for your time!

    Keeping it Together

Nope, I didn’t. I didn’t really like anything around my middle - not painful just a bit uncomfortable. Used to roll down the waistbands of my pants so they would sit at my hips & under my wounds. We all carry our weight in different places & if you have a larger or pendulous tummy, a binder my help support it & not strain your surgical wounds. Good luck with your surgery.
