  1. Hi all.. so glad I came across this website. I am from the UK and it is soooo hard to get your Operation done on the NHS that I have to pay, this is what has stopped me for several years, but I refuse to wait any longer.. So., I am borrowing the 6000 pound and going ahead with it. After reading all the forums etc, realised that it is not going to be a walk in the park.. going to need hard work and dedication but no pain, no gain. Just wanted to introduce myself anyway.. anyone else in a similar position, get in touch... be nice to have someone to talk to as I am not telling my close friends... they are overweight too and they will not like what I am doing.

Preparing to get Banded in August

I was banded on June 17th,08 and am scheduled for my first fill July 29th. I lost about 25 lbs in the first 3 weeks post-op, then it just stood still for a couple of weeks and now I have gained about 4 lbs. I can't actually say you feel hunger, as I never let myself get to that point and that is my downfall. It isn't that you actually feel hunger, it's more what they call "head hunger" I think. I know I am definitley ready for some adjustment, as I can eat almost everything and way larger amounts than when I had restriction after surgery. I beleave if you stick to the 3 meals a day and get exercise when you can and don't let the head hunger get in your way, you won't really feel hunger. Believe me this is one hell of a trip we are on, but I am so glad I know I am heading in the right direction. My best wishes to you. The surgery is easy and I am sure your recovery will be as well. Just follow Dr.s directions. Your baby is adorable! Kerry in Oregon:thumbup:
  3. I had my two month anniversary, and second post op exam/meeting. Bloods good, I lost 35 lbs so far, but one of the drivers for me was Barrett's and the GERD I was experiencing is largely gone. I still take an H2 blocker as a precaution and got cleared for real exercise, not just walking. (Had a hiatal hernia that got repaired). I gotta say, having done this, I couldn't be happier. Yes, I'm still trying to draw lines but the surgeon said to measure portions, even though his dietitian does not address portion size. I think it is important to have resources as you go through this, not just for support, but for info. I consider this such a place. I'm far more mobile and agile, can do stuff I couldn't before because of oversize/bloat/weight. I'm fitting into clothes that I couldn't. Not that this should be a reason, it's just a benefit.

    New Here Need Advice!

My doc recommends 7-800 calories. To tell you the truth I am not happy with my weight loss rate. I have heard upping calories can help you loose weight but I really don't know how to get in more calories with out bad carbs or fats and I just cant eat that much.

    Anyone else struggling with this?

I was a skinny teen. Size 2, typical cheerleader, big boobs, skinny waist, big hair. I swam and played soccer so I was fit. I had stretch marks on my breasts, hips, thighs, and stomach despite never being fat. My 16yo is 5'6", has never weighed more than 110 pounds, wears a size 00/0 in teen sizes and is very active. She is a martial arts instructor and goes to the gym daily. Guess what? Stretch marks. Don't fret it. Be proud of your success. You've done great! I know it's easier said than done, but learn to love the body you have, the body that can do all sorts of fun and healthy things that it couldn't do at it's highest weight. You are a true success story and a few battle scars to prove it aren't the worst thing in the world.

    Anyone else struggling with this?

As has been stated on several posts on this site, the surgeon operated on your stomach, not your brain! Those feelings and insecurities don't go away just because you lose weight. Take time to get to know and love that person in the mirror. If you can afford it, counseling may help. I have been a nurse for a long time and I have seen one illness destroy peoples appearance, whether from cancer or some other terrible disease or surgery. After observing this over a number of years, I realized that our appearance just doesn't matter all that much. A cancer patient with no hair and 90 pounds was still an attractive human being. why? Because she was a caring and loving person. Looks fade, skin sags, and stretch marks linger. But they have nothing to do with how beautiful someone is. That comes from WITHIN. Good luck on this journey...

    anyone use BCBS in Arizona

I heard recently that they have changed their requirements and no longer require a 6 month weight loss period. Has anyone else heard this or been approved since this? I have a friend who is waiting on her approval thru BCBS and is wanting to know what to expect. thanks all.

    BCBS of IL decline

From everything I've heard, BCBS NJ is one of the worst to work with, as is BCBS IL. I have a coworker who had to spend months getting her husband's pacemaker approved because they kept giving her the runaround! I found out that they wanted "more details" on my 6 month weight history. I am trying something that may work, but from what I've heard BCBS IL will find any excuse possible to not approve the surgery. So if it gets denied this time, I will have to start my 6 month history over again, and this time I will keep so much documentation it'll take a box to mail it in. :angry
  9. I too am very nervous about having this surgery done. On some days I'm convinced that because I have a thyroid problem, not even this will work. But then I go through my mental list of all the things I look forward to after the surgery and it helps!! I look forward to: 1. getting in a canoe or kayak with my husband to go fishing 2. fitting in a movie theater seat without the armrest up 3. getting the seat belt on an airplane to fit and buckle safely 4. reaching to clean myself appropriately 5. walking upstairs to our guestroom without being completely winded 6. not having to lean over to drink out of a glass with a stem because my boobs are in the way 7. not covering my double chin with my hand when my picture is taken 8. dance the night away like I used to 9. not snoring worse than my husband 10. not being paranoid about what people are thinking if I catch them staring 11. my bras lasting longer instead of the wires popping out because of the added weight 12. buying pretty underwear instead of basic white or black 13. wearing short sleeved shirts again 14. not bruising my arms walking through a narrow doorway to quickly 15. not having the steering wheel touch my stomach 16. being "on top" for a change 17. enjoying walking the mall again and going shopping 18. painting my own toenails 19. getting down on the floor to play with my dog 20. Crossing my legs. 21. Wearing my hair how I want. When I think of all these things, my fear just disappears. I plan to have surgery in September and look forward to a new life. What do you look forward to?

    Gaining Weight For Surgery!!!????

I gainied weight to get the approval. However, I also could show a history of weight gain and loss through many programs such as LA Weight Loss, Nutri-System, Weight Watchers, ect ect. Thank God I had kept records, because the insurance asked for them. My doctor wrote an awesome letter. We started working the insurance company first of February and I got approval the first week in May.

    Gaining Weight For Surgery!!!????

I had a BMI of 39 and was approved through UHC without gaining any weight. Try your best to get approved at what you're at now. Good luck.

    Excess skin

I'm only just over 3 months post-op but already with 80;bs of loss, can notice a lot of skin. So far the only skin really bothering me is the half skin/fat of my double chin that is still lurking. Otherwise at this point, I am actually excited for the excess skin- because it's not fat. This might sound silly- but right now, it's soft and squishy and is fun to touch. However having said that, depending on insurance coverage when I am ready and have lost most of my weight I might consider my arms (THEY ARE MASSIVE) and POSSIBLY my stomach (but that depends on how bad it is) and I would LOVE a boob job. The one part of my body I used to love (my big ample breasts) are now just saggy gross things that don't even look good in a bra. lol I am single, in my 30's and am done having kids- so this also plays a factor in my decision to move ahead with plastics.

    THoughts?

You don't mention how much you wanted to lose or your BMI. Truthfully, you need to decide how important being thinner is to you. I know that I'm never going to get to a BMI of 21 or 22 simply because I am not willing to do the work it would take to get there or maintain that kind of weight. I think you need to decide if you are willing to work out more (and more careful eating) or if you are happy with your weight loss. Personally, I think it's great that you've been maintaining. It's something that scares me. I keep telling myself that it's more important to keep off the weight I've lost than to lose more. We've come so far on this journey, I don't want to go back. Cindy

To fill or not to fill

I would not fill. As long as you are losing slow but steady you do not need a fill. You need a fill when and if your weight loss completely stops and I would give that platue a good two months (yes that long) you need a fill if you are starving and not losing weight. The sooner you start getting fills the less you have to work with. I see people who are two months post op with 9 cc's in a 10 cc band so what do you do after you are full. I went a whole year without one fill and lost 70lbs had one fill on dec 30 and another on March 6. My doctor told me as long as I am not hungry and losing I dont need a fill. I only have 3 cc's in my band and still have a lot to work with. The longer you wait to get a fill my dr said the more successful you will be because you have more to work with. I wouldnt be in a hurry and they cant make you get a fill if you dont want one. I say no fill.

The 5:2 diet originated in the U.K. and gained popularity around 2012 following a BBC broadcast. It involves eating a normal diet five days a week and a very low calorie diet two days a week - 500 calories for gals and 600 for guys. It is often referred to as "intermittent fasting". There are virtually no long-term clinical studies that have been done regarding safety and effectiveness. This is a link to information originally published by the National Health Service in the U.K. in Jan 2013 and updated in May of 2013 - http://www.nhs.uk/news/2013/01January/Pages/Does-the-5-2-intermittent-fasting-diet-work.aspx . The bottom line appears to be that there are more questions than answers. It would likely be a very good idea to discuss it with your surgeon before adopting the diet. It may not be suitable for folks with diabetes and possibly other pre-existing conditions. What I call the "Prime Directive" of weight loss surgery is the all important lifestyle changes. I believe that to qualify as a lifestyle change, any potential course of action must meet three criteria - it must be healthy, realistic and sustainable. It's about control, not denial. Adopting a lifestyle that focuses on proper nutrition and a calorie intake appropriate for where you are at in your journey, from rapid weight loss to maintenance of your goal weight, is perhaps a healthier, more realistic and more sustainable goal than any "diet".

    12 months program

IVe been asking this question a lot too since my BMI is right at 40. All the answers I’ve received - even from the Bariatric program coordinator at my surgeons office - tell me no, the BMI they look at is your starting BMI. That being said, I’ve had a couple people recommend that you don’t lose any more weight than the insurance company’s required percentage. Good luck!

    Funny Taste

Ketosis is so good. It means your burning and going to lose weight. I find sometimes when I am in ketosis my clothes begin to smell more metallic if I am working out at the gym. It is weird I know but after a few diets that monitored my ketons I got used to it. Once you start to maintain more it wont be a factor.

    Bcbs Federal Nj

I had to fill out a sheet of my previous weight loss attempts. I don't remember now if that was just for the surgeon's office or if that went to BCBS. I wrote down every stupid diet I'd ever been on....low carb, low fat, weight watchers (more times than I could count), etc. Also, there were notes in my primary care physicians file that my weight had been a topic on numerous visits. My BMI was just under 40 but I had high blood pressure, high blood sugar and high cholesterol. I'm on BCBS Federal in Montana and they approved my surgery.

  21. Just wanted to throw some hope out there for those looking for approval from their health insurance company. I have United Healthcare and my employer is Walgreens. They require a 6 month supervised diet and 5 years of documented weight history that shows a BMI of over 40 without co-morbidities or 35 with co-morbidities. I had some major fears about getting denied because I didn't have any health insurance coverage for most of the last 5 years, thus did not go to the doctor to have my weight documented. I decided to go for it anyway! I went to my first seminar at the end of February and began my diet in April. I contacted every hospital I had ever visited and requested my records. I had to fill out forms and mail them in. One hospital charged me $18 and the other $40. I ended up with two pieces of proof where my weight was documented. One from late 2006 and the other from the beginning of 2010. I then gathered two pictures from each year going back to 2007. My insurance rep from the surgery center gathered all of this together and sent my case to insurance on November 6th. Then I held my breath...for a long time... Once the three week mark hit, I was convinced I'd receive a denial. Then I wondered how would I even appeal if the reason is due to lack of documentation? Figured I was done. Yesterday my insurance rep called me and apologized again and let me know the case was still pending (she was so awesome throughout the process and provided me updates several times a week). Then... 10 minutes later she called back to tell me I was approved! I'm so excited, nervous, anxious and happy! So, all in all, I wanted to share my experience because I know how it is to wonder...and wonder....and wonder...

    Cigna denied my surgery....

Cigna denied my surgery, they said they didn't get all the information. So I went through my doctor and nutritionist's notes that were submitted (for my 6 months of medi. supervised weight loss program) and see that not all of them state that diet AND exercise were discussed, so now I have to get them to basically re-write their notes with all the required information, because we DID discuss both diet and exercise at all of the appointments, they just didn't document it! AGHH...... Insurance and doctors are so frustrating and my PCP is so by the book, she may say she can't alter her notes. I just hope I can get all of this information and submitted soon, so I don't lose my surgery date. I am trying to think positively - and hope it gets done.

    DON'T GET A LAPBAND if....

Some of us are not bitching. We have not been as successful...do we just give up? Or can we start over? I'm happy for you....very. I've felt a loss of 25 and w/out fills and maintenance have gained most back. Do I give up? Or can I start over? Mind over matter. Takes some of us longer to "get it" and shouldn't blame anyone else. But I didn't come here to "bitch" or "moan" afterall I choose to put the food in my mouth and sit in my car 2.5 hours a day (commute to work) and another 8 hours on my butt (at my desk answering the phone).... do I quit or can I start over? Banded in 04.....2 fills in 5 years....15 lbs lost. 215/200 What to do? What to do?

    DON'T GET A LAPBAND if....

I read a few entries today and want to make sure you have a very clear understanding. LB is not a miracle, you can't continue your bad habits of before and expect to lose weight. If you are getting the LB and think you can set on the couch and eat bonbons all day and then whine bitch and moan because your not losing weight DON"T GET A LAPBAND. You can't drink that beer as one guy complained, or I am still drinking cola as another complained and don't understand why after a year she had lost only 20 pounds. The LB is a lifestyle change not a cosmetic. If you are unwilling to follow your doctors orders for eating and exercise save your money, go on a cruise and stuff yourself at the buffet. The LB for me is a great tool, it gives me more control than I had before, I can eat, sleep, and exercise to become a better and healthier person. Eating, follow your doctors directions, follow the good advise on here ask your nutritionist when you have questions, find what works for you and do it. Exercise, you have to do it, get off your butt, walk, mow the yard, do your honey do list, whatever it takes to stay busy. The more you do the more you feel like doing. It gets better everyday, not easy but better. Sleep: this lets your body recharge, if you are not getting sleep you are not losing weight. Make a plan and stick to it. Last of my rant is don't compare yourself to anyone else on here, what you lose is what you lose based on what you ate, slept and exercised. Sorry I just had to get this off my chest after reading a few post from those who whine bitch and moan and won't get off their butts. Exercise is the hardest thing I do, but I do it. Pushing myself away from the table is hard, but I do it. Making myself go to bed at 8:30 at night so I can get 8 hours sleep is hard but I do it. The reward for this is that I feel better, I look better, I have more energy, I am alive again and I might just live a few more years.

    5 Day post op

Hello, I'm trying to get started on how do I go about getting this surgery started? Do I make appointment with my doctor and tell her I want this done? I've been over weight most of my life and I can't seem to lose the weight but gain it. I'm sick of being heavy and having medical problems. I'll be 50 soon and I want to be healthy and live not fat with heath problems. I'm 5'5 and around 238 lbs. I have Medicare part A and B and Tricare for insurance. I'm so lost and scared that my doctor will say no for some reason. Help!
