    Newbies

HI - My name is Martin, along with my wife Brandie. We are considering getting banded, and we have our first apponintment to talk to the Dr in 2 weeks. We have done a lot of research, and found this forum to be informational. It is nice to be able to read about others experiences, and have another resource to go to for questions and answers!

    Just got banded on 3/3/08

I think i was disalussioned...i had my gallbladder taken out a few months ago by the same surgeon and he told me basically it would be very similar. I never took one pain pill for that! this was a little bit worse. The gas was pretty bad for the first 3 nights. My dr. kept me in over night. He keeps all his laps in over night for control of pain and n/v. I have had no nausea or vomiting....jsut some belly pain. Feels like i have done a million sit ups (well, like i know what that feels like). I am down 7 lbs and it has been one week yesterday. But again....I am hungry every 3-4 hours and tired of the liquids but...i know it wont be forever!!! Good luck with your surgery!

    New Puppy?

Thank y'all so much for all the input. I've been doing the "Shrink Yourself" program (www.shrinkyourself.com) and one of the things it teaches you is to find some other activity when you want to eat. "Playing with a pet" is one of the activities and this would be a great one for me, since I'm such a dog lover. As lauradevans said, I will probably wait until a week after surgery to get the sweet baby, so that I can be sure I'm feeling a little better and that I don't have any complications. I'm doing some major life changes right now, and banding and a new puppy are just two of them. I'm so excited!
  5. I can't seem to shake the blues this morning. I had a vgb 27 years ago and a REY two weeks ago. I gained 20 pounds while in the hospital for my two day stay....and two weeks later I'm still up by 6 (and gained weight the last two days). My calorie intake is NOT causing this weight gain....and my head knows that this is surgery trauma trying to work itself out. But I'm now sitting here questioning everything. I lost 80 pounds prepping for this surgery. I wanted to stop vomiting......I wanted the assist of malabsorption.....but I'm queasy every time I put food in my mouth. I'm uncomfortable with the feeling of food in my pouch. I'm disappointed that my body won't play along. I can't drink enough. I can't stand the thought of having to have two protein shakes a day to get the required protein in. I'm just really wondering why I put myself through all of this again just to feel as miserable as I do in this moment?

    Just got banded on 3/3/08

I was banded on March 3rd as well and today is the first day that I actually feel "great"! I had my gall bladder removed last summer and I don't remember hurting quite as much. I really loved my Lortab. I think I'm down to one last dose. My hunger really kicked in yesterday, so I was just ornery. Today, I don't feel quite as cranky. I'm sure it will get easier as the days go on but I am right there with you - full liquids is tough. I don't know about your surgeon but mine has me on full liquids for 5 weeks. It's going to be rough!

    Cruise

I am having surgery on 8/5, had a cruise booking for Puerto Rico for 9/20 that I just canceled. Luckily The deposit wasn't too bad a loss. I would have been only 6 weeks out and not sure how I'd be doing with food and stomach tightness. I thought about taking shakes but wasn't sure how. The liquid form might add weight to my luggage and not sure if powder is allowed on a flight, I am assuming as long as it's sealed it should be fine but who knows. I am considering rebooking in November when I'm 3 months out. Has anyone take protein on their flight, if so what form?

Hard time getting protein in! Help please!

The three most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily protein, fluid and vitamin requirements. Food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight. Weight loss is achieved after surgery through meal volume control. You begin at 2 ounces (1/4 cup) per meal and gradually over the next year and a half increase the volume to 1 cup per meal. With this minuscule amount of food, it is next to impossible to meet your protein daily requirements by food alone, so therefore you need to rely on supplements such as protein shakes. Many experience problems drinking protein shakes. I hated them. But in the beginning I drank them, three 16-ounce protein shakes a day, in order to meet my protein requirements. You do not have to like protein shakes only tolerate them. There are many varieties of protein shakes available today. Experiment until you can find one you can tolerate. I used Muscle Milk Light (Vanilla Creme) powder blended with water and a half a banana. That worked for me. But on the opposite end of the spectrum, you might try premixed Isopure. Without sufficient protein, your body will scavenge protein from other areas of your body, such as your muscles. Protein is extremely important after surgery as its job in the body is to build and maintain tissues including your body's major organs and skeletal muscles. Protein deficiency, when continued over a long period of time can cause a disease known as protein caloric malnutrition. Common symptoms are poor healing, fatigue, hair loss and muscle wasting. Immediate post op, protein promotes healing of the staple line and incisions.
  10. Hello everyone. I 've been looking at your forum lately and i decided to sign up and post in my turn my story and some questions i would need to be answered. I am a 25 years old. Male. And have been seriously obese since my childhood. Back in 2008 i used to weigh 140 KG (circa 308lb). At that time i had decided to go for the intragastric baloon. In six months time, by doing simple one hour walking 3-4 times per week, and following a diet strictly, i have achieved to lose 50 Kg ( circa 110lb) . My doctor told me it was really a record for the stats. Unfortunately, as soon as i removed my balloon, hunger came back, and maybe more than i ever had. I ended up , today, weighing 151 Kg ( 332 lb). I was thinking to have the gastric sleeve surgery, but in my country where i live, and for having some close persons working in hospitals and clinics, they tell me i should avoid any kind of WLS. Because in time many patients come back due to some failure. Some of them even died. I just know that i can't trust the country where i live for this kind of surgery. Could you people share with me where would you suggest me to go and have the operation? I also heard that some patients looked older than they really are after 2-3 years time post op. Additionally they looked like emotionally neutralized. Not so happy and smiling as before. Does it have to do with the ghrelin hormone? I am a really happy person. I am motivated by my humour even in my most tragic occasions. It would be a shame if my mood changed in a negative way after my operation. Additionally, i read about the gastric plication. I know this is a gastric sleeve forum, but i really wanted your opinion on that. What would you suggest me? Should i go for gastric sleeve? Or plication? I'm really afraid of removing a great part of my stomach and knowing about reducing greatly the ghrelin levels. Are there any other young persons near my age who had any success ? Either with sleeve or plication? If you could private message me doctors and hospitals (in Europe if possible) it would be greatly appreciated. Please enlighten me. My dreams have stopped (for now at least). Help me continue live my life again. Thank you for walking with me until now by reading this message.

    Failing

Hey crew!!! I am supposed to intake 73 grams of protein a day and I am failing miserably!!! I'm a little over 4 weeks out and the premier protein shakes are way too sweet now. I try to get all my water in but I get full soooooo fast. I don't know how I'm supposed to get that much protein when I can barely eat. Please tell me this will end soon.
  12. Good advice that DeLarla. It's really easy to see how much weight comes off the first two weeks after being banded and then think it can came off that fast forever (we wish  ) You have to remember that it physically can't, 2-3 lbs of weight is the absolute maximum that your body can lose in a week when very strict diet is combined with vigorous daily exercise. 3-5 lbs a month is a much more realistic target. Water retention fluctuations will create the impression of losing and gaining weight on a daily basis, so weighing yourself no more than monthly is recommended if you do not want to experience that "Frustrated!!!!!!" feeling again.

    Frustrated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jemigirl, you really are doing fabulously!!! We are only supposed to lose an average of 1 to 2 lbs a week. According to your stats you have lost 5 lbs each week. Your doing great!!! Look at the positive aspects of it. Best wishes, Teresa
  14. Jeanie, you're doing great! Try not to get on the scale too often. I think that backfires on you. Maybe, once a week. Then, hopefully, you'll be pleasantly rewarded. But 20 pounds in a month! Wow!
  15. Today is 3 weeks post band. Up until yesterday, I have been feeling great. I've lost 13lbs and am thrilled. I'm not hungry so that's great. I'm going into my 2nd week of mushies, and all of a sudden yesterday I started feeling awful. Terrible 'sour' stomach, bad heartburn, burping and extreme fatigue. I haven't changed my diet at all and have followed it to the letter. What's going on! ugh

    Telling your children?

Since they are 4 I would definitely keep it short and simple. "Mommy is having surgery on her tummy. The new tummy will be small, and I won't be able to eat very much for a while. Mommy isn't sick, or hurt, but this surgery will improve my health. I might feel tired after the surgery for about a week or so but then I will be feeling better and back to playing with you like normal." We talked to our girls about the weight loss aspect of it simply because they were older. (like 8 & 10 at the time, plus mommy & daddy had sugery...not at the same time but we are both sleeved) so they understand what it was about. It was still a bit scary for them and they had a lot of questions. I didn't tell them about surgery until about a month before my actual surgery date, I didn't need them worrying for 6 months about what was coming. We also covered the privacy issue, that this was something that we were doing but that we didn't necessarily want them to talk about it with the whole world. They did pretty good, and of course now that we have lost almost 130lbs between the both of us, they say things like "we can hug all the way around you" and little stuff that is encouraging. But for the most part I would keep it short and simple and just answer their questions as the come up.
  17. Hello everyone. I was recently diagnosed with hypothyriodism in 8/2019. After realizing this, I started the process to get approved for VSG and was approved for a 8/2020 surgery date. I then pushed my surgery date back to 12/2020 because I am so afraid of the unknown. I am 5 ft 9 inches tall and I weigh 269 lbs currently. I have always been super athletic and my calves and thighs are huge and are very muscular. I have a three year old daughter and lost 22 lbs during my pregnancy just so that I could deliver with my OB vs being considered high risk and having to transfer to the hospital where I worked in high risk OB. My highest weight has been 275 lbs. Please someone with hypothyriodism please share some insight with me. Here are my biggest fears. Loosing too much weight too fast. Not being able to tone my body and my biggest is not being able to ever drink 2-3 gallons of water day every again. I currently take Synthoriod 75 mg and I have found a new endo Dr. Please someone share some info with me.

    Activity Resrtictions??

well, fwiw, even the skinniest dressage queen should use a mounting block to mount because it's better for the horse's back and the saddle. I started my late BS Paint myself when I weighed 290lbs and I weigh 250 now (having band complications that will require band removal and hopefully a revision to RNY). I ride 3-4 days a week on my 7yr old Thoroughbred and am learning Dressage now. I asked my dressage trainer whether my weight was hurting my mare and he said no basically because I know how to ride. I'm not a sack of potatoes that can't balance in the saddle. So, don't let your current weight stop you. It took me a while to get my surgery but my initial weight loss was significant (40lbs in 3 months). You'll be fine!!!
  20. I go to the gym 3 to 5 days a week, right now I am just on cardio, the eliptical but will be moving to weights this week.
  21. I'm entering my 7th week post op and I am stuck at 264 pounds. I realize I have lost a lot of weight but on the other hand, I don't understand why I haven't lost any this week. I am averaging 665 calories a day. I am getting about 70 gms of Protein and I an hitting the 64 ounces of Water. I am working out three to four times a week and burn an average of 400 calories each time. How can I not lose weight? It makes no sense to me. I am aware of stalls and I did have one a few weeks ago but it didn't last more than a few days. It's hard to keep motivated when the scale doesn't move.

    Beyond frustratred

I just finished with a 2+ week stall. And now I'm losing again, but it is not very much. It's just going slow right now. It's so frustrating when it's happening! But we have to take comfort in the fact that we are doing what's right and our bodies just need some time to catch up.
  23. Oh yes, yes, yes - irritatingly, annoyingly, exasperatingly, frustratingly normal! Prep yourself for stalls regularly on this journey. At 3 weeks. At 3 months. I lose pretty consistently 100g a day now - 3/4lbs a week. But some days when I think I have eaten perfectly normally I will put on a pound! It goes fast, but water retention, hormones, muscle building all have an impact. One trick I have learned - often when I am in a stall, is when I will drop a pants size, or a bra size. So make sure you get in the habit of checking that or doing regular same-spot measurements with a tape measure and you will stay smiling!
