  1. My surgeon's office appealed with the EXACT same language as the first request to go from VSG to an RNY which was denied. Hello month wasted, of course they would deny it again. What's that line about repeating the same behavior expecting a new result? Sheer laziness! 😡 I'm currently waiting on a call back from the appeals department at my insurance for clarification on one of the points of the revision criteria: Weight loss to 90% or less of ideal body weight If my understanding is correct, since I only lost 27% of my excess body weight and I'm a good 55 pounds from my ideal body weight (not even my goal, but I'm 35 pounds from that too and only lost 24 pounds total) I could be considered for revision. What I find is ridiculous is I have a few cm sliding hiatal hernia visible on my upper GI literally every time I breathe, hiccups countless times a day associated with that, GERD no responding to PPI use resulting in mild (so far) esophagitis, and documented dysphagia just with liquids on a swallow study done plus I've had vomiting with foods like meats that got "stuck" because my esophageal muscles aren't working properly anymore. All of which would be resolved with revision to bypass. Add in I have family history with cancer on both sides, including with my grandad and aunt on my dad's side who had stomach cancer (removed whole stomach) and esophageal cancer (multiple bouts) respectively, and this scares the crap out of me. I don't want to be on a PPI for years, which is not safe, or wait until I have 4 months of documented severe esophagitis that could turn cancerous. Not to mention what this could do to my asthma and high blood pressure during this whole Covid era, neither of which were resolved by the initial surgery either. Why does insurance have to be such a 🤬 ?!!

    Driver's License

    I always put 250 lbs on mine even though I weighed well over 300. When I got down in the 130s, I had to get a new one, but I put 140 because I figured I'd have some bounce back weight (unfortunately, I gained more than that...). But that was the first time I ever I lied and said I weighed MORE than I actually did!

    Driver's License

    I always thought that was weird, too. I didn't have to list a weight on my North Carolina driver's license, but i do on my Wisconsin one. I can see how that would be helpful to them years ago when they didn't have pictures on them, but now??

    It's crazy that some states require a weight for the driver's license. I've had a license in 3 states - PA, FL, and MA, and none required me to put a weight. Anyway, Congrats!

    I can't make up my mind!

    Most places don't make you stop coffee permanently - I have to stop caffeine 2 weeks before to a month after. But you can probably take imitrex for migraines, since it's not an NSAID. I take it and they didn't tell me I'd have to stop it. Or topamax, I take that too, and it helps with weight loss (has some not wonderful side effects like forgetting words, but I'm used to that now). You can also work with your doctor to find something that works for your arthritis, and it may get better when you lose weight and can be more active (depending on where it is).

    I can't make up my mind!

    I used to drink at least 4 cups of coffee per day, and I stopped the day of surgery. I haven't had any problems, though I don't get migraines. (BTW, I also used to have a double whiskey every night, and I stopped that, too.) I'm planning a hip replacement later this year. I was hoping to get some relief from the weight loss. So far, with over 40 pounds lost, I still need the replacement hip.
  7. Never told people outside my family and no one ever commented on my portions. They knew I was trying to lose weight (which I was) so everyone was actually really supportive “let’s order from ___ instead of pizza so Jenn can eat with us”

    Thinking about Gastric Bypass

    Ditto! I chose RNY bypass over sleeve due to: 1) RNY gives slightly better results, statistically, and seems to be more commonly recommended for my age group (I'm 58). 2) I'm a twenty-year GERD sufferer, even when at lower weights. The sleeve can cause/increase GERD symptoms (you will find a fair amount of people here who had revision surgeries from sleeve to bypass due to GERD). I also had an older sibling who was a long-time GERD sufferer and ended up dying at age 61 of esophageal cancer. I decided to take no chances. 3) Bypass is reversible, sleeve is not. (Though there are very few instances when a reversal would actually be needed/done.) 4) I actually wanted the possibility of dumping as a "reminder" to stay on course with proper eating over the years to come. 5) RNY procedure bypasses some of the small intestine which causes mild malabsorption of nutrients/calories. This means that lifetime vitamin use is absolutely necessary (which is also recommended for sleeve recipients) but it also means that occasional digressions from proper eating won't be as detrimental to overall results.
  9. 1. occasionally 2. I haven't noticed it in myself 3: I bought pretty much everything except underwear and swimsuits at Goodwill and other thrift stores during the weight loss phase. I was blowing through sizes so fast it didn't make sense to spend much on clothes, knowing I'd probably only be wearing them for a month or two.
  10. Congrats on your weight loss so far! You're doing great! 1) Yes, I get hiccups sometimes when I eat too fast. It hurts! 😢 (my surgery has a VSG stomach. Just with the intestinal bypass bit added that makes it the Loop DS) 2) I do stagger sometimes, but I also have arthritis in my knees, hips, and back so I always attribute any staggering to that. But, honestly, you've lost more than 25% of your weight. As the above poster mentioned, your center of gravity may be a bit off and you should be able to adjust over time. 3) Well, I was a 34 in jeans when I was at my highest weight (389 pounds) and my shirts were 6xl. I had clothing from about 15 years before when I was a 26 in jeans and some shirts from high school that ranged from 3xl-4xl so I put off buying clothes for quite a while lol. I went from those 26 jeans straight into an 18 (that I luckily didn't have to buy because my Mom wore this size so she just gave me a few of her pants). I also bought a few xl shirts around that time too. They were all on sale lol. Then I waited and bought 14's when the 18's were sliding off. I also bought a bunch of shirts since I figured I was close to my goal weight at the time so I bought a bunch of larges. I'm now in a size 12 in jeans and wear both medium or large shirts depending on the fit. Personally, I'd say buy a few things off the clearance rack if you can't stand how big your clothes are, but since you'll probably grow out of them pretty fast, don't buy a whole lot.
  11. WOW, congrats on your fantastic success! 1) Yes! But they never last more that a minute or two for me. 2) Your center of gravity has probably changed and I'd think that you will naturally adjust over time to a smoother stride. 3) When something becomes so big that others say I'm "swimming in it", I will buy one or two items in the new size. Luckily, I wear scrubs to work and they're pretty forgiving when it comes to fit... they're expected to be loose/boxy. But for non-work wear, I'll buy one new pair of jeans now and then when I really need to until I reach my goal weight. The tops I wear are pretty forgiving, too.

    June Surgeries

    I hear you, Christina! I feel the same way. I had to buy different vitamins because the chewables made me nauseous. I barely lost any weight and I have no energy whatsoever. The scale finally moved today so I'm feeling hopeful. If we keep doing what we are supposed to be doing, it's going to work!

    Update On Me (Surgery: 5/19/21)

    You'd think. My husband seems to think that it's just that I carried my weight so well that perhaps that's why they aren't noticing yet. Gotta love him. I laughed and was like, yeah ok. But then he reminds me of how many doctors and nurses have said the same and/or been surprised to see my actual weight once I get on the scale vs. what I looked like to them beforehand. Who knows. I worry about not fitting into smaller clothes. I personally don't like tight/form fitting clothes. Especially not at this weight. So it worries me to try for something smaller. My biggest problem areas were always my mid section. Although I have lost lots of inches in that area (and others) but probably not enough to fit a smaller jean size which is why I keep wearing my loose cotton capris. LOL Maybe I'll break down and try something smaller on at the store just for reference purposes.

    What is your 1st major milestone?

    I’m 152 lbs down today so I’ve met all my goals but the final one- hitting a “normal” BMI. I’ll hit that one in 16.4 lbs. A few more milestones I hadn’t considered: 1. Went for a hike yesterday in 3 inch inseam shorts because my legs don’t rub together anymore! Last summer I didn’t even wear shorts- just size 4x leggings that I overheated in. 2. I am almost to the weight that my drivers license has said for like 20 years. I love that last time I renewed it and was clearly more than 150 lbs above that weight the lady didn’t even blink an eye. I renew in about 6 months so hopefully I’ll update the weight down this time.

    Update On Me (Surgery: 5/19/21)

    UPDATE: So I've been noticing that I have NOT been getting in many vegetables in since surgery, if at all. You know how they push for us to eat protein first. Well I do that but end up just filling up on the protein and thus getting in no veggies. Wondering if I should worry about that or not? I was thinking of just cutting back on the protein just so that I do get in some veggies but then I worry I won't get enough protein in for the day like I was doing before when I was having stalls. Sigh......what to do, what to do? Or should I just not worry about it for now? I speak to the nutritionist again next month and will mention it to her to see what she suggests as well. As a side, I have now lost 44.7 lbs since surgery and 63.2 total since March but have yet to get any new clothes. Like I feel a lot of my stuff hanging on me differently but I don't really know if I could fit in anything smaller. I used to be in a size 28 for most pants. Like one pair was a 30. But I also have a pair of capris that are 26's. Whenever I would fit them again I'd know I lost weight. Well I have been fitting them for a while and they are finally getting loose too. But not sure I would fit a 24 just yet. Which seems weird to me. You'd think by now I should be fitting into a smaller size. How much weight did you all lose before getting new clothes? Like I feel like I SHOULD be in a smaller size based on the amount of weight I lost but not really sure it's gonna happen. I don't want to buy stuff prematurely. Also, how long before people started noticing your weight loss? Like how much weight did you lose before you had people say anything, if at all? I have NOT HAD ONE person say anything about looking thinner/different/etc. LOLOL Which is weird cause my husband who sees me everyday (and they say it's harder for those who see you often to notice it first) says that he can most definitely see and feel the loss on me. Weird considering no one else has said a word. And I just got done seeing a ton of family who haven't seen me in years and when they last did I was 60+ pounds heavier!! LOL
  18. I've had one coworker comment on my small portions but it wasn't even questioning me she just said something to the effect of wow I'd be starving if I ate just that. And I simply said yes I'm eating smaller portions but more often, I'll be eating again in like 2 hours and she just said oh okay that makes sense and that was it. I eat a morning snack, lunch and an afternoon snack all while at work so it's pretty clear I'm not attempting to starve myself. Eating out with friends people either haven't noticed, haven't commented or I'll just say I'm not that hungry. I'm also open about the fact that I'm trying to lose some weight and that's generally accepted without question.

    What is your 1st major milestone?

    I hit 50% of the way to my initial goal today. Still a little in disbelief at how the weight just keeps steadily going down. I’m 8 weeks out. My initial goal is 180 (65lbs).

    Lab Band Removal Experience?

    Female: 42 at the time 2009 (insurance covered), HW 232lbs. Best weight 143lbs. No problems with band till the slip due to a bad stomach virus in 2017 (diff, insur, and not covered) had to pay apx 5k OOP, still 143lbs. No doctor would do a revision as they all said.... I "didn't weigh enough". Fast forward..... 2017-2019 I put back 30lbs. Came to the conclusion that I would have to go to MEX to get a revision. May 2019, I finally got my divorce property settlement. Headed to Mex. But then as luck would have it, I found a dr. 10 min from me. I still had to pay OOP, and it would be more, but I would not have to fly and all the other humbug. So I paid OOP 14k for a revision to the sleeve 8/28/19. I was 173lbs, today i'm at 123lbs. Was your removal done in an outpatient facility or in a hospital? Surgery center. Was a hospital stay required? One night How long did the surgery take? 30 min. No scaring, no erosion, no GERD, pretty open and shut. SX said if band had not slipped, I would still have her. What was your experience after the surgery? Lots of pain? How long did it take you to recover? After SX I had a little gas. I had no pain at all. SX was on Thursday and I was back at work on Monday. Was your removal covered by insurance even if WLS is not? It was not. Sleeve SX was just as easy, less the one week liq diet. Sleeved on Wednesday and back to work on Monday.
  21. I had my lap band out as a separate procedure and without any intention of having another weight loss surgery. The removal was a much easier procedure than the installation. To answer your questions: It was done outpatient. No hospital stay required. It was brief. I can't say for sure, but less than an hour because I was recovered and we were on our way home by noon (surgery at 7am). Of all the surgeries I've ever had, I would say that it was probably one of the easiest. The port site was the sorest, but even that wasn't bad. I had to take very few pain medications. I recovered very quickly and I was back to work within a couple of days. Even the progression to eating was smoother and faster. On liquids for a day or 2, then right to soft foods. The removal was covered by insurance as a failed implant. Mine had slipped. However, my insurance also covered the original surgery. Word to the wise: make sure you have insurance approval PRIOR to undergoing the procedure. My doctor didn't and I had to fight with the insurance company in a drawn-out appeals process to get it covered. Meanwhile, the surgery center was trying to take me to collections!

    Surgery classes

    If you're talking about the pre-surgery nutrition classes, for me it was a joke. They didn't talk about how to eat after surgery at all, just like "did you know french fries are unhealthy??" There are also classes that introduce you to the whole program, like what the surgery does and how you prepare for it, and what to expect in terms of weight loss, and what the visits you will need are.
  23. 5. I feel ya there about being cold...I have started wearing polyester or cotton thermals at work or even wool ones (gosh they are so nice nowadays) during the winter. The worst part is my feet and hands that are cold year round...even in the summer. That could be circulation problems though. 4. My hair never really had a problem. I have tons of really fine hair so I may not have noticed. BUT now that I have lost my weight and am almost 50% of what I used to be...ive taken advantage of my weight and now have a really short pixie cut! I've always thought that pixie cuts look better on thiner ppl...and now I am one. That and when I play beach volleyball it's so easy to just run water through it. 3. Hehe...I think having to do things with your hands is also a covid thing right now. Ive just started as well. 2. As a teacher, I LOVE my alone time. When ppl are going on about what large events they are going to during the weekend, I am thinking about either sitting alone with Netflix or just walking in the woods with the dogs. 1. I was sooooo anxious before as well when dealing with the whole clothes issue. It took me a few cautious times to go in to stores during off times and discretely try on clothes. I always started with the biggest size and went down until it was just a bit too small. (Women's sizes were usually too short (Im a 5'11" woman), so I had to look at the smaller guys sizes.) It took me a while progressing to more normal behaviours but now I am slowly becoming a clothes hog again. Even more now that I've been at around the same weight for about a year (and still losing a bit...but more building muscle now), it's only now that I am getting it through my head that certain clothes size wont get smaller anymore....because I am a just normal human being! Now, it's me choosing styles and materials that I like. Ive discovered that I LOVE tights in the summer when before they were a HUGE taboo. (I am never going back to shorts because of skin hanging on my legs though.) Much love to you all!

    Thanks for sharing. I was curious as your height & starting weight & BMI are similar to mine were. Honestly, when I started my research the permanency of the surgery was a concern too but the more reading I did & self reflection I realised the permanency was what I probably needed. Not that I was really someone who binged, emotionally ate or craved food but I felt it was the only way to alter my dead slow metabolism & the hormonal influence on my weight gain/loss cycle. That was my thinking for my situation & it’s certainly worked so far. Good luck whatever surgery you choose. 😀
  25. I found trying to be truthful to a point easier. If you feel comfortable tell them you’re trying to be more conscious of your eating or just that you’re on a diet. I bet dieting is a pretty common occurrence in your staff room - was always in mine 😁. Then as you lose weight they’ll think you’re being successful on your diet & with your changed habits - which you are. You can always eat in your room on odd days - say you have class prep or marking to catch up on. I like @Bluebonnetgirl’s mindful eating suggestion especially once you’re on soft or solid foods. It does get easier because those around you start to accept the changes you’re making, your portions get larger & closer to recommended serving sizes. I still sometimes have to tell people who ask why I’m not eating or not eating much that I’ve had enough, I’m not really hungry today or these portions are huge. Good luck.
