7months post op and pregnant
jen1211 replied to newlifeforlittleME's topic in Pregnancy with Weight Loss Surgery
Congratulations on your surprise! I don't have any first hand experience but after 6 months you should be able to provide adequate nutrition for you and baby and there are women who have gotten pregnant much earlier. I think your best bet is to ask your doctor to speak with a nutritionist who can give you some ideas of what to do with your diet during pregnancy and again how to adjust post pregnancy to keep the weight coming off then. I wish you the best! -
Hi there! I'm from Queens NY. I think you should first start by calling your insurance to confirm that they cover weight loss surgery. Ask what the requirements are. And the. Ask for them to recommend a surgeon in your area.

I have good and (possibly) bad news. Bad news first - weight loss and hormone changes can actually increase your chance becoming pregnant. My gyno warned me of this because I'm on the pill and told me that I should use backup because with the weight loss and especially the hormonal changes, it was a higher possibility of becoming prego. Good news...the weight loss and hormonal changes can throw off your cycle. Mine was a month late and then came 2 weeks early for the next one. It came hard and heavy too but I was expecting it because of the surgery. So hopefully it's the good news, I've read about a lot of people being thrown off from the surgery and weight loss.

Sleeve Surgery/Sleep Apnea Nightmare/Help!
dfwtxmissy replied to CathyG123's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I too had the sleep study and yes..had to get a CPAP. I knew what was in store because My hubs has to use one. As I have lost weight, I have not been using it and it too is collecting dust on the shelf. My husband tell me that I do not snore like I did before surgery. Let your doctor tell you what you need to do. It does take some getting used to however you will get used to it. If it helps, just from my experience, I used the mask that simply fits over your nose, not covering your whole face. It lets you feel less claustophrobic. -
Are you selfpay? There are two great bariatric centers as well, Puget Sound Bariatric (a division of Puget Sound Surgical Center) and North West Weight Loss Surgery (NWWLS). They are both excellent and have all the certificates and awards, etc. And quite a bit less for selfpayers than going through a major hospital.

I got pregnant 5 months out and all was PERFECT! I'm sure my pregnancy was much healthier than it would have been had I not had surgery. I worked in more snacks to boost my calories (all very healthy and some ice cream to keep my sanity) and all went well. Delivered just days before my due day all natural at a birthing center and got up and walked out with my baby girl 3 hours after I had her. I gained 17lbs throughout and was back to ore pregnancy weight two days later. I continued to lose after with breastfeeding. (Keep those healthy calories up if you're planning to do so. It takes up A LOT of calories!) You'll be just fine!!! Congrats to you!!!!

Feeling full
Arabesque replied to HealthyLifeStyle's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You could possibly reduce your protein since you’re in maintenance & it’s very filling & up your vegetable intake. Daily requirement in the US is 0.8g protein per kilo you weigh so you could reduce your intake to about 50g. But check with your surgeon & dietician first. (My dietician said I needed a little more because of my age so I work at 1-1.2g protein per kilo of weight.) I can eat more now than I did at 6 months & more than I did at 12 months. To get my calories in to maintain (about 1200+/-) I feel like I eat all day long. I snack about 4 times a day on dairy, fruit & multi/whole grains in addition to my three meals. I also still take ages to eat: 30-40+ mins for breakfast & dinner & about an hour for lunch but it does enable me to eat a little more. Are you still leaving time between when you eat & drink? Have you tried plant based proteins? I believe they can be easier to digest & may not upset you or fill you as much. I really think you need to have a conversation with your surgeon & then your dietician because you’ve been struggling so much. -
nerves increasing before surgery?
m1aman replied to dolphintattoo's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I guess the nerves are normal for most people. I was afraid I would die in surgery if anything. But just having the band won't necessarily make you lose weight all on it's own. You will have to work it by eating properly. I believe most people do well with the band. But some don't........ -
I can explain a little. Rapid weight loss can cause problems with the gallbladder. It can develop stones and/or sludge, or it could be neither and it just quits functioning like its suppose to. Symptoms can be painful right upper quadrant abdomen after eating fatty/spicy foods. Sometimes it doesn't even have to be a specific food. The pain can shoot straight through to the back, sometimes will cause the right shoulder/neck to feel sore. can feel like intense heart burn. The best part about it though, is people can live without the gallbladder and its a fairly easy organ to get rid of. So, what I would do is #1. Call the doctor #2. Get an ultrasound (ct does NOT show the gallbladder well enough for it to be diagnostic. Unless you have a huge stone that they could see, ultrasound is the best. #3. If the ultrasound is negative, do a nuclear medicine study with an ejection fraction . Thats what tests the function. Hope you get better soon!

I am a newbie too. I have my esophogram and first pre-op class this Friday 7-17-15. I am nervous about the esophogram too. I am also really close to bmi minimum so I have to be careful not to lose weight during the process or I won't qualify but I have Aetna and they don't want me to gain any weight either. Good luck on your test. Let me know how it goes.

I got a lighter weight one to start so I don't hurt myself LOL

Anyone told they don't weigh enough by insurance? Appeals, weight gain and more.
pinkbunies replied to OldMomOf3's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
tbh I'll have to look at the paper work again as I don't remember the surgeons name. The one thing I hated hearing was... your not big enough, this is for people who need it. It made my blood boil and made me more determined. Sometimes, no matter how hard you try you just can't lose the weight. One day the ignorant insurance companies are going to realize that they will benefit more by having this surgery done vs. letting the person continue to have health problems. -
Today I heard something
Jane_J replied to excited2lose's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I agree 100%, I always say exactly how I did it because I remember how freaking bad I felt when I was getting fatter and other people were losing weight by 'will power'. I think it's more helpful to others to understand that people have this surgery and it works. I couldn't give a flying wottsit if they think I have taken an easy way out, but most people are very supportive in my experience. So be loud and proud people!! :scared0::thumbup::sad0: -

You look amazing. Do you mind me asking your beginning weight? -
I had my first surgery when I was 24 and I was scared out of my mind! But, honestly, your image of it is a lot worse than it actually is (or at least that was true in my case lol). They take you into the operating room and the anesthesiologist talks to you bit and may ask you a few questions and then... you wake up in recovery. I'm 32 right now and have had surgery 3 times (gallbladder removed, brain surgery, weight loss surgery. In that order lol). I was only scared the first time because it's the unknown that terrifies. And yeah, you'll be in pain when you wake up, it's typical of any surgery. But, you tell the doctor and they'll give you some lovely pain meds and you should pretty much be fine after that. Just make sure you walk, walk, walk, because you want to get that gas out of you and that's the only way to do that. Yes, it'll suck and you'll be sore and won't want to do it, but you actually feel a lot better when you push yourself a little bit. Not too much, just a little. If you're have the sleeve surgery (or DS or Loop DS) then your incision site where they removed your stomach is going to hurt the most. I had to have my mom help me in the shower because if I moved a certain way it hurt so bad I'd start crying. Also, getting up hurt. And sometimes sitting down. However, I also didn't take my pain meds so I'm not really a point of reference lol. I have a high pain tolerance due to my TN and I hate how pain meds make me feel so if I feel like I can withstand the pain I do and won't take the meds (I had a 30 pill prescription. I took maybe 8 or 9 pills of that and still have the majority of the prescription left over somewhere...). So yeah, it's nowhere near as bad as your mind is making it seem. Just focus on how you're going to feel a year from now when you've lost a ton of weight and are a healthier you! I wish you the best!

Recommended Bariatric Surgeons in Los Angeles
s2dm posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi All, I have the Sleeve about 16 months ago and had an overall good result, lost about 55% of my excess weight. I was pretty surprised though that I really never had much feeling of restriction after the surgery, never got sick, never felt overly stuffed, and my hunger only decreased moderately. I kinda felt like most of my weight loss was really attributable to the lifestyle changes I made associated with the surgery, although it definitely helped some. I recently was diagnosed with an inflammatory spine disease for which the only real treatment is aggressive weight loss and moderation of inflammation. I'm considering having a revision of the sleeve or conversion to a bypass and would really like to find someone great in the Los Angeles area. My previous surgeon was fine operatively but didn't really listen to me and I'd be hesitant to discuss my current situation in that setting as this feels like a really big decision given my recent diagnoses. I'm considering Dr. Feiz and Dr. Dorwaiswamy. Any other great people I should consider who are great surgeons but also willing to spend a minute listening to concerns? -
Congratulations Patteee. I too a cancer survivor 2 + years. Many blessings and good luck on your weight loss journey. I can't weight lol (I spelled it that way on purpose) for my 6 month Dr. Appts to be over.

1+ Years Out Excess Weight Loss Percentage Lost
Rootman replied to Anjelika's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
92% here. Started out 375 plus - I refused to step on the scale for the last few months so I imagine it was more as my clothes were getting real, real tight. I now weight 204. This figure is based on a target weight of 190 - which is the top end of my BMI. 185 pounds should of been lost, 171 pounds actually lost 171/185 = 92.4 I will never bust through the 200 pound mark unless I take drastic steps in my diet. I already work out 4 to 6 hours a week and eat very little. I LOOK like I weigh less, I've always been blessed that way but it would be nice to dip below 200 for once in my adult life. -
1+ Years Out Excess Weight Loss Percentage Lost
Foxbins replied to Anjelika's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 17 months post-op, lost 100% of excess weight plus 23 lbs more. I'm 5'8" and a size 6! I still can't believe it-- It gets harder in the later months as you start to crave more variety in your foods, but stick to Protein first and limit the junk food and you'll get there! -
There's no way, physiologically or otherwise, that you can gain 6 pounds of true fat after one or two so-called "cheat days." 6 pounds of fat gain would have required you to consume and store 21,000 excess calories as body fat. It cannot happen in a couple of days. What is happening is water gain due to consumption of too many starches. Eating too many carbohydrates without enough physical activity will cause bloat. Foods with a high carbohydrate level cause the body to store three times as much water compared to protein. This storage is in the form of glycogen, which requires a considerable amount of water. The end result of eating too many carbs without enough activity is water weight gain, at least in susceptible people. In carb-sensitive people, carbohydrate loading (a.k.a. "cheating") causes fluid retention that results in a lot of temporary water weight gain. Recall that the liver utilizes water as it creates and stores glycogen from all the carbs one eats. Thus, water weight gain will show up on the scale as a heavier weight. I do not have cheat foods or cheat days. If I want a slice of pizza or a cheeseburger or taco, I eat it. Since I have no forbidden foods, I have minimal desire to go off the rails. "Cheat days" are a part of the dieter mentality. I sucked at diets; therefore, I am not on a diet. As long as that burger can be worked into my daily calorie budget, it is not a cheat food for me.

How dramatic, or unhealthy can weight loss in feet be? I am just 4 months post-op and lost 39% excess weight (based on BMI) and I have noticed me feet are slightly more slender, and a "bump" on my right foot (below that artery) is no longer annoying me so much I skip the shoe lace hole for long walks. I am still the same shoe size, just my feet seem slightly less "bulky." More importantly, I noticed what appears to be some potential loose skin developing on the outside bases on both my "pinky" toes. Does this become a problem down the road? I know about loose skin, but loose skin in feet would seem like more of a problem. I have always had athlete foot problems, so this concerns me if it gets "worse."
