  1. I'm almost one year out and down 89#, which is 28# short of my goal weight. That said, I already look "thin", to the point that family & friends - and now me - are questioning why I'm trying to lose the additional weight. I'm 5'6" & 158#. I'm wearing a size small/medium and a size 6 in pants. I'm also planning to have skin removal surgery in the next year or so. While I'm still going to stick to my post-op diet, I no longer feel the need to continue losing. Is this a common thing?
  2. Hello! I am looking to introduce myself and possibly get some advice or insight from others! I had a VSG in October of 2016. Weight DOS was 288, lowest weight I reached was 198 within about 6 months of the procedure. I developed terrible reflux that I managed with OTC medications, and maintained this weight loss almost effortlessly (I did go to the gym 4-5x weekly and ate small portions - stuck to the rules as best as I could) until the end of 2019. But to backtrack a little - I was diagnosed with breast cancer in May of 2018, so by the time I was through with chemo, steroids, horrible lethargy...you get the picture... the weight piled back on within a year of finishing treatment, and by the end of 2019, I had gained 60lbs back. I am in no way trying to play the "cancer card" or blame it on that, I know I am fully responsible for the way my weight journey has turned out, but if I had to pinpoint when it started to go downhill, I'm pretty sure it aligned with that. Presently, I am at 261 and am seeking a revision due to the reflux, a severely dilated fundus that was seen on both a CT and an endoscopy, and the weight regain. I guess I am just looking for others who are also seeking a revision, or others who have recently had one who may have any words of wisdom! Lastly, I have Harvard Pilgrim and my authorization has been submitted by my surgeon and is now in the "pending medical review" stage. Anyone else with HP, roughly how long did it take to hear back? My program coordinator said anywhere from 1 to 2 weeks, but I was just wondering if anyone had any personal experience. Thank you for reading and I'm looking forward to "meeting" more people on here!
  3. I still have GERD and take a PPI twice daily with the RNY which sucks but my esophagitis when last checked went from a grade D to a grade A which is really good. I also have no problems with keeping my weight stable. The VSG was great but I struggled in maintenance keeping it steady. My weight fluctuated a lot more and the lowest I got was 164.8 for a day, lol. I could usually maintain 175ish but was constantly stressed out. I would say I ate around 1000-1200 calories to stay in that range and under 1000 to stay in high 160s. RNY has been much easier to maintain my weight. I now weigh 154 and my weight fluctuates between 152-155. I have no problems or stress maintaining it !! This makes my daily life much easier because I dont constantly think about it anymore. I would even say I eat more now then what I did with VSG which sounds crazy but its true. I have dumping syndrome which keeps me away from heavy carbs and sugar. I do eat these things in small amounts and usually dont have any problems but I have to be very careful of when and how I am eating those things. I am less interested in food with RNY. Some days its a chore to eat ! I think this comes down to not being able to eat whatever I want when I want so if the food isnt great I really dont want to bother with it. My mind set has become totally different in regards on how I view and look at food. I am 14 months out from my revision and 4 years from my VSG. Good luck to you !

    Can't lose weight

a 10-20 lb bounce back is extremely common after hitting our lowest weight. It usually happens during year 3. And if you're at or near a normal BMI, losing 10-20 lbs is a BEAR. I gained 20, and would like to lose 10 of it, but it's been a huge challenge - so I can relate. if you're not tracking, I'd start that again - and go back to following all the rules (protein first, then non-starchy vegetables, and if you have room, an occasional small serving of fruit or whole grain carb). Don't eat and drink at the same time - all the stuff we learned and did that first year. if you're doing all this and still not losing, and again, if you're at or close to a normal BMI, it could be that this is just where your body wants to stabilize, and it'll be an ongoing fight to go lower and keep it there. I've kinda come to that conclusion - I have to either accept it or be prepared to constantly fight it. Ugh.
  5. I don't think it's the fat neck thing, because I have had dry mouth at my heaviest weights. For me, it's from medications. I think there are lots of causes of dry mouth.
  6. I think this is true. It's also true that people who lose significant weight before surgery are statistically more likely to have less regain than those who don't. Maybe part of it is metabolic reset, or changing your gut microbes? I lost over 50 pounds in the 6 months leading up to my surgery.

    Can't lose weight

Over what period of time did you gain the 20lb? How long have you been trying to lose the gain and what have you tried? How many calories are you currently eating? Are you weighing and measuring everything you eat? Tracking everything you eat? What exercise are you doing? How much fluids (and what fluids) are you consuming? This will help people in their responses to you.
  8. I am 4 years post op and I regained 20 pounds. I cannot lose the weight, I've tried everything. Yesterday I only had 1000 calories. Any recommendations?
  9. Hello! I had a band for 8 years and then it was removed when it slipped after my pregnancy 7 years ago. Even though I gained my weight back after the removal, it was such a relief after years of fighting stuck food. I only weighed about 160 lb then (5'8") so I was not eligible to convert to a sleeve. I would have definitely done that though if it was an option. I did recently have sleeve surgery, and it was a smooth transition. The doctor said there wasn't very much scarring from the band when I had it. So far this is easier than the band. I don't get stuck on foods. However I had a pretty dysfunctional relationship with my band, and trying to avoid getting food stuck was part of the reason why I reached a low weight lol. I never really maintained healthy habits with the band, so I'm hoping I will have the discipline to do that with the sleeve since it works in a different way. Would your BMI be high enough to convert right now when they remove the band? Would your insurance cover it?

    July Surgeries??

Hi! I had surgery on the 13th and a few days ago I made a post called "I hate the scale" lol. I have sort of been all over the place, too. Actually in the past few days since I upped my calories, I am having a more consistent downward weight trend. I think mine was a mixture of body fluids and constipation for the first 10 days after surgery. Today I had my two week appointment and I was down a total of 9 lbs, which doesn't seem like a lot especially compared to those people who lose like 22 or 25 lb in 2 weeks, but I'm following the plan, so there's not much else I can do. I was happy to find out that that loss finally put me under a 35 BMI, so little losses are adding up. I know that people usually talk about the three-week stall on here, but the second week was really chaotic for me weight-wise. Hopefully we will both be slow but steady to meet our goals. Ps I just realized this is the bypass forum, and I had sleeve, but I don't think it makes that much difference in the first few weeks.

    Eating

You’re still healing. A lot of nerve endings were affected during surgery & they need time to heal too. The more liquid a food the less likely you’ll feel any sense of fullness as liquids pass through your digestive system more quickly. So it’s not until you get to soft foods or solid foods that you start to feel full. I ate about 1/4 -1/3 cup depending upon what I was eating. I was given serving sizes not calories or weights to follow. Took 3 days to eat a serve of rolled oats & the same to eat 2 scrambled eggs. Of course I could have a lot more if it was a liquid or soup but always ate/drank over a long time. In saying that, we’re all different & there are lots of different plans out there. As long as you’re not experiencing any discomfort & following your plan, you’ll be ok. Congrats on your surgery.
  12. I hiccup All. The. Time. and i’ll be 3 years out in October. I never noticed a stagger, but i did have alot of hip and lower back pain starting around month 2 that affected how long I could stand or sit in the same position (so possibly my walk too? I dunno). Doc said the pain was due to bone and musculature adjustments brought on by lower weight. Was told it would go away eventually. It did, around 4-5 months post op. Bought new clothes as soon as the stash of “skinny” clothes i kept in my closet ran out LOL. And lastly, CONGRATULATIONS on all your effort, you are doing awesome! 💪🏽

WHERE ARE MY AUGUST 2021 PEEPS?

I am nervous, but I need this surgery to lose the weight, so I can be healthier, live longer. we can do this!
  16. I have wide feet, unfortunately no matter what I weigh, and I had a pair of Danskos I loved before I had my son. Unfortunately, my feet gained so much weight I couldn't wear them and have them to my bff. Now I wonder if they would fit again! That's interesting that yours don't feel as good now. I wonder if you needed more support before your weight loss and maybe that's why. [emoji848] Maybe it's too much now and you need more cushion. Interesting! 17. Mine are way better too. And they never were bad until I got really overweight, in my late 20s. Then I got big cracks in them. I was also a new nurse at the time, standing on my feet for 12 hour shifts. I'm pretty sure I read a long time ago that it has something to do with the fat cushion in your heels wearing down from carrying too much weight. Sent from my Nokia 7.2 using BariatricPal mobile app
  18. You know, now that I think of it, my feet also have been lovely since losing the weight!

    anyone over 60?

Hi Elizabeth! I was sleeved a year ago at 67 and feel better than I have in many years. I had a smooth recovery and continual weight loss, although very slow at this point. Slow and steady wins the race (well, not in the Olympics). Good luck, and ask any questions!
  20. Can you share with me what your experience going from Sleeve to RNY has been like? I am trying the medical managed weight loss option right now but so far it’s not helping with the reflux. What are the biggest differences to you between the two procedures and how they affect your daily life? Thanks for sharing.
  21. I disagree on losing less weight 2nd time around. It may be harder but if you follow the rules you will lose the weight. Example I weighed 296 day of surgery VSG I lost 14 lbs first month. I weighed 180 day of surgery RNY I lost 12 lbs first month !!!!! There is 116 lbs difference in starting weight for those 2 surgeries and yet 2 lb difference in weight loss.

    Frustrated

Your weight mgmt. program will want you to be in good health prior to an elective surgery. Diabetes that is not well-controlled will lead to poor healing.
  23. like the lizonaplane said, the two-week (or however long the surgeon requires) pre-op mostly-liquid diet is to shrink your liver so it's easier for them to get under there to operate. in addition, some insurance companies require a 3-6 month professionally-supervised diet. I think this is to see if you are able to stick to a plan long term. I lost a ton of weight on mine, so if it was supposed to prove to them that I could lose weight without surgery, then I wouldn't have been approved. I do think it's to show you're committed and can stick to a plan.
  24. I've heard a few people who had the sleeve saying that they stopped losing weight early on. Sorry that you're going through that! I've had pretty slow weight loss myself when I compare myself to others due to my hypothyroidism and not being able to really exercise due to my back injuries and arthritis, but I was still recently able to get to my goal weight even after multiple really long stalls throughout my journey including the most recent one being 47 days long. If you look into revision, other than gastric bypass, you could also see if your insurance will cover the duodenal switch or loop duodenal switch surgery and if you can find a surgeon who will perform it. The sleeve is literally the first part of the surgery, they just add the intestinal bypass portion and you statistically lose the most weight with the DS. So it's an option to look into. I hope you can either find something that will work to pick your weight loss back up or a revision that'll work for you. I'm so sorry you're struggling and I hope that things work out for you.

    Scared to death!

I was incredibly hungry during all of weight loss phase. It was too early for what you ate, and that's concerning....because endangering yourself this early on is bad news for being able to make health protecting choices in the future. While probably not world ending (honestly cheese and refried beans were on my soft foods list)....it makes me think you need more support than you're getting. I know some people experience a tremendous decrease of appetite. I was not one of them. I was every bit as hungry as I'd ever been and more so.....so I totally feel your pain. Please be concious that you need to follow your instructions carefully so you don't injure yourself. Causing a leak in your stomach suture line will result in a hell of a long hospitalization, and VERY serious potential problems. You don't want to go there. You don't want to risk the smallest chance of it. It's that bad. I wouldn't be me...without plugging the bariatric therapist...so I'm gonna say you should see if your clinic will give you a referal. Lots of folks are resistant to this, but it's just not a bad idea. What could it hurt to give it a try?
