    Hello! New here

I was diagnosed about 10 years ago with sleep apnea and given a CPAP machine that I don't use (I know, not good). Having had my colon removed and now having a j-pouch, I have many bowel movements a day since a pouch does not absorb water like a colon does, nor does it hold as much stool (basically I have chronic diarrhea). I read on another forum that a woman who had both procedures said her life has been hell (this post was from 9+ years ago though) since having the sleeve done and having a j-pouch. She said that food goes right through her, I guess since there is only so much room in the stomach and then the pouch being the way it is? Another woman who I am speaking to who had both procedures done said she had the same issue at first, but it got better. She now takes Lomotil twice in the evening so she doesn't have to go so much during the night, but can handle the extra bowel movements during the day. I'm going to meet with my colorectal surgeon this week (he didn't perform my surgery but is the one who I've been seeing for quite a while now) to go over everything again. It's odd how some doctors say it's fine and others say no way.
  3. So for those that had the hiatal hernia repair definitely know what I’m talking about, after surgery when you drank something it would feel like it would get stuck for a second then go down all while being painful. Well I had surgery almost 7 weeks ago and I was doing fine, pretty much no pain at all while eating or drinking but it seems like out of no where I’m starting to have pain again while drinking and eating. I know that I’m not eating/drinking more or taking bigger bites so I’m not sure why the pain would come back. Anybody have a clue?
  4. I assume its three shakes plus the foods you have mentioned in your post? You could try make a fairly basic ricotta bake adapting to the egg and ricotta cheese amounts you are able to have. When I was on my pre-op diet which allowed only three shakes and low carb vegetables, a few times if I needed something different I would have cottage cheese or chicken in place of the shake but made sure it was to the same calorie count or protein amount as the shake. I would have the low carb veges with it. It wasn't the right thing to do, and I certainly don't want to encourage you to do it, but it did save my sanity and kept me on track for some of the time, unfortunately I wasn't the best pre-op person, thankfully I am much better at post op haha
  5. Hi all Well I'm 2 weeks post op now and can start my puréed food today. I had weetabix for Breakfast and managed about half of one but now feel really sicky and light headed has anyone else experienced this? I'm wondering if its cause my bodies just been used to yoghurt's and Soups for past 2 weeks. Definitely stopped before I felt full though so don't feel I've over eaten.
  6. Hi Mary, I definitely had a swollen belly after surgery. I had lost weight but it didn't feel that way in my clothes. Every day for me was better than the day before. I took dulcolax to help move things a long (if you are on prescription pain killers that can really bind things up too). It took a full week for me to really start feeling good, then another week feel pretty much normal. I tried to walk as much as possible as well to alleviate gas pains from the surgery and promote healing. If you feel very uncomfortable, swollen, etc for longer without improvement give the doc a call to check in. Good luck!

    EEGADS I have the Flu!!

I got the flu too 2 weeks ago. Also got the nasal swab which was really uncomfortable. My son got it a week before and was out of school for the week. We had flu shots as we get every year but came down with the strain B that it didn't cover. I still feel like I'm in a fog and still coughing. Can't get my energy back. My son is all better. Feel better, Kristen! It takes awhile. Just get lots of rest and don't worry about exercising.

    EEGADS I have the Flu!!

Kristin, I am so sorry you are sick. I heard that about the flu shot on TV this week. Take care of yourself. Jill
  12. I was sleeved almost 2 weeks ago on 3/9. I had a great experience and feel great. I went back to work on Monday, am walking everyday, have never felt sick or in pain. I'm mostly still on full liquids but can't wait to move up to mushie stuff:) I'm sure you will do great with a little extra planning and care:)

    Questions and concerns.

two weeks before surgery I had bloodwork, an EKG, a chest x-ray, they looked down my throat to make sure all was clear that they'd be able to access my windpipe after I was under. Lots of questions about my health history, etc. I may be forgetting something else. I was there for a few hours seeing different people/depts. It was very thorough. And I don't have any real comorbidities. When I had my lap band surgery in Mexico they did similar stuff - but it was all the day before.
  14. I haven’t had surgery yet but this all sounds wonderful to me! I wasn’t heavy until my 40s (I think I came out of the womb thinking I was) and I’m in my 60s now. Every since high school I’ve made calendars and in later decades spreadsheets figuring out how long it would take me to lose the x pounds I wanted to take off at 1.5-2 pounds a week. I NEVER succeeded. I might get the weight off in the earlier years but never that fast and never permanently. Have heart. You are making beautiful progress!
  15. I am going for my procedure in 4 weeks and my doctor says that I don't need any blood tests or scans witch concerns me alittle considering my mum just went and had the band and her doctor made her have scans and blood tests?

    Second Thoughts...

I like you am having surgery on May 22nd. I know exactly how you feel because I weighed 278 on May 5th and today I weigh 249. I know of course that it is due to the pre op liquid diet that I have been on for almost two weeks. The thought has gone through my mind several times...." Oh, Andi, you can do this without surgery" but then reality hits me hard and I remember the numerous times that I have lost and gained back plus some.... I am going into this surgery with a positive attitude and I am fully ready for a more permanent change.......we only have a few days to go.......

    Protein shake.....is this okay?

My doctor encourages us to try to get all our Protein and calories from solid foods, so I didn't use Protein shakes in the mushy phase, and I rarely drink them now. Occasionally I'll be running late and need an on-the-go meal so I'll throw together a Protein Drink, but it's probably happened only 2-3 times in the last 8 weeks. I also use Protein drinks for two days after I get a fill, and it's recommended to go back on liquids for two days if I have a PB or vomiting issue (so far so good). I agree with the previous poster about adding sugarfree syrup - I like Da Vinci syrups and found them at a local discount grocer for about $3.50/liter. They certainly improve the taste of the protein powder! My new favorite recipe, discovered during my two days of liquids last week, is 4 oz sugarfree Oregon Chai Concentrate plus 4 oz Silk soymilk mixed with a scoop of All the whey vanilla powder. I drank it cold with ice and it was quite nice :-) Good luck as you move along in the process!

    Two kinda stupid questions

I wore my favorite maxi dress to and from the hospital. It was a real pick me up to put on something that I felt good about wearing when I left the hospital. If you have something that is pretty as well as comfortable (no waistline), I definitely recommend it. My constipation raged for about three months after surgery. I absolutely had to use laxatives every week. But now, nearly five months out, I rarely need a laxative. So for me constipation was uncomfortable, but temporary.

    Emotional eating and food addiction

I agree and disagree with what @jenn1 wrote. These reasons are DEFINITELY important variables and factors in us growing obese. But dang...thinking that food addiction/stress eating/emotional eating/fill-in-the-blank eating wasn't at least one of the variables that brought each of us to the super morbidly obese ball is removing part of our personal responsibility in why we have attendended this ball in the first place. I have a crap ton of medical/metabolic issues that contributed to my broken metabolism. But I assure you, when I was barely eating during chemo/radiation? I still lost weight. I lost weight. While having iv prednisone and super large doses of chemo every 2-3 weeks. IV steroids! But, the SECOND I started eating my normal big portions again, and began eating out of boredom, and to when I was upset, or when I was scared, or hurt, or angry, or just because it was there and looked dandy? I gained it all back. Even though I was no longer on those iv prednisone bags or chemo. Even though I was more active. Blah blah blah. Fact is I loved food. I loved to eat. I NEEDED big portions so that I felt full! I craved that full feeling cuz it meant all was right in my world. And I personally ate myself back up to 287 from 218lbs. I won't lie about that. There's no magic in that. I didn't just "magically" get to be 287 lbs or 325lbs. I did it cuz of poor personal responsibility and choice. And if I DON'T understand that, and change my wicked ways in the future, then I will be doomed to suffer the same fate and regain after this golden shot to be thin and healthy. Just sayin'.

    Does insurance paid for revision?

Depends on a couple of major things: 1. Your insurance company's policies. 2. Whether or not your doctor will do a revision all at once, or will require you to do it in two, separate surgeries. My insurance covered my band removal in March, and my doctor wanted me to wait 3 months before sleeving so that my stomach would heal - I had massive scarring and a heavily distorted stomach from living with a severe slip for 2+ years (long story as to why!). As soon as the band was removed, we began the process of getting insurance approval for the sleeve - at that point, I was considered a "new patient" in that I had to meet all of the WLS requirements as if I'd never had the LapBand. Luckily, the process was QUICK and didn't require too many hoops - I was sleeved exactly 11 weeks after my band was removed.

    In Houston Texas

Hi I am a 30 year old that had lap band done on Dec. 28th, 2007. Here I am 6 months out and have only lost 20 pounds. I am an emotional, boredom eater. I got back on my protein shakes last week. I am having a hard time with water but I am trying. Please I need a buddy to help me stay on course.

    What is the deal?

I dont know if its a good idea but I am going in for the lap band on Tuesday the 16th and after reading a lot of your posts I have decided not to weigh myself every day and maybe just look at the scale every 2 weeks or so. That way I will surely have lost weight and it will make me feel good about myself. If I got back on the scale and saw an increase I am afraid I would really get depressed. Just Food for thought.
  23. At my two week check, I was told I could start using aloe or vitamin D on my incisions if they felt itchy. I had a great moisturizer that has both ingredients, and that's what I used. My main concern would be an allergic reaction. Personally, I would test any product on another area before putting it on an incision.

    Work work work

I am taking three weeks off. Because I can. LOL, yes I can because I have been at the same place for 30 years and have over 1600 sick hours available. And with our stupid new PTO system, I can't use them unless/until I am out more than five days. So, yeah, because I can.
