7 year veteran RNY gastric bypass and failed but still have hope!
Kmartinez15 replied to Kmartinez15's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My boss who is now the surgeon who replaced my surgeon has discussed my weight loss issues with me. He mentioned that he would oversee many of my surgeons procedures and while he was a talented surgeon, he did one thing differently. He would make the pouch a bit bigger. He had said this was done in order to reduce complications. By doing this however it allows more food to be stored and therefore less restrictive. Of course the fact I have regained etc is my fault. However this method didn't do me any favors. It reduces dumping syndrome. I asked my boss if i would be a candidate for revision but he said he doubted that would be necessary and said if I started taking an apoetite suppresant it might help. Hmmm -
Hi. I'm a single female, 37, never married and no kids. I live in Erie, Pennsylvania but I'm kind of restless and hoping to move one day. Hoping to get my Lapband to sleeve revision in a couple months to lose additional weight.

Are they gonna do lypo as a revision to your knee from the thigh lift?

Would you have WLS again? What kind?
phatfatgirl replied to Julie norton's topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
@ladyvs After the last ordeal with trying to get a fill I just gave up on it and never tried again. I probably have had only about 3 fills with little bits at a time, I can't remember how many ccs. It just put me off. But now that I'm back at my highest weight I started to look into the revision. So I'm basically disregarding the band and looking to have it removed and the rny done at the same time. -
AZDee, I've read so many of your posts that I feel like I know you. I agree with your comments about scaring. That's initially one of the reasons I looked at Gutierrez -- his micro-surgical expertise. But now I'm trying to look at the big picture thanks to all of the honest, open feedback provided by you and others. I'm definitely concerned about scaring, technique (sculpting skills), infection rate and of course price. Because I need multiple procedures, pricing is a concern but doesn't trump the other considerations. I hate, hate, hate general anesthesia and really think twilight is a better option. But that's not enough to make me have the procedure performed in MX. Initially I too thought that affordability was only an option outside of the US, but I'm seeing more and more affordable options. I know the look I'm going for. As the girls on realself.com say, "I want to get snatched!" But..... I'm trying to be realistic about what is possible for my body type. I find that a lot of the drs. here (even in FL) give tummy tucks with a boxy shape. I'm in love with the curvy hour glass sculpting done in MX and DR. So I still have a lot more work to do. I really wanted to chat with you about your experience with Gutierrez since you're having some revision work done in TX. I read a review from someone else that wasn't thrilled with their work. Sigh..... Ally

Best piece of advice you have! I'm a day away from Gastric Sleeve surgery.
CowgirlJane replied to Sara51692's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
You have received great tips! Mine is simple. I was pretty overwhelmed, with a BMI over 50 and one "failed" WLS behind me. I revised to the sleeve in Dec 2011 and I needed to believe that success was possible for me. I identified 2-3 others on these forums with similar profiles who were further along on the process. Their successes helped me believe that it was possible for me too. Since they were similar to me (age, gender, degree of obesity) I tended to "listen" closely to their advice and experiences. A related note, on these forums, we are all experts of "one" - we know our own experiences. Sometimes advice is given on these forums that might not actually be the best thing for you. Example, people early on in the process might lose really well based on "restriction" and advise you to eat whatever you want, whenever you want. SURPRISE - long term success is not as much about restriction as you might hope....the advice to not change your eating habits might work for some, but over the long run, most of us need to eat differently, not just rely on eating less to maintain our losses. anyway, just be aware that this is a support forum, filled with great information and advice - much of it very good, but rely heavily on your NUT, surgeon, etc. too. -
Okay, HOW can we gain it all back?

Thinking about Band to Sleeve Revision. I'd love your advice.
goregalore replied to rklapband's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I share a very similar story too! Got the lap band in 2010 and went through two years of fills with no "sweet spot". Lost about 35 lbs total and had problem after problem. Got a complete unfilled in 2012 and still got stuck and vomited weekly. I researched revisions at the end of last year and was sold on the sleeve. I met with my surgeon and he was all on board with the sleeve. I went for several GI pre op tests and one came back that the band had damaged my esophagus... Because of this my surgeon felt I would be unsuccessful with the sleeve. I'm now 9 weeks post op bypass and loving it! Down almost 45 lbs. Very long story short, discuss your decision with your surgeon and make sure he thinks you'd be successful with the sleeve. -

What are your differences between Year 1, Year 2, and Year 3?
CowgirlJane replied to Queen of Crop's topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
I find this to be one of the more interesting threads. Nearly 6 months after my initial post and I am STILL struggling. Meaning I am bouncing outside my bounce range. I looked back at some old pictures when I was well under goal and I did not look better. I am finding 3.5 years post band to sleeve revision a time to both continue the struggle (never surrender. ..quote from Galaxy Quest) combined with a degree of acceptance. Ya know, I never really was a skinny chick.. Last month or so I have actually found myself thinking about dairy queen blizzards and other old habits I left behind years ago. I think that I have abandoned some of my new rituals which has left room for old bad ones to return. So far no DQ; but I have been thinking about what additional help or support I might be needing right now. -

Our stories are very similar, I had lost only 30lbs before I started having problems. Had to unfill due to reflux and not being able to get liquids down. I have had no restriction since last year and gain all the weight back. Each time I tried to get a fill I would end up going back for an unfill. Never hit the so called "green zone". I'm now waiting for approval to revision to the sleeve. Best of luck on your journey! -
I've only lost 30lbs with the band and have had nothing but problems for 3 years. I'm hoping to be approved for revision to VSG soon. Good luck to you☺️

It's official- I can eat anything!
SeahawksFan replied to LSF's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am 7 months out. I didn't have revision surgery...just the sleeve. I can eat anything. If I eat more than a cupcake I feel queasy. I don't dump but definitely don't feel good so I don't push it. I also find that steak doesn't feel so good in my stomach either. Like a big lump. So I usually just have skirt steak and that does fine. ~LA -
As I have been reading the posts the past few months I saw how first time Sleevers had issues with certain foods. As someone who had revision surgery- I'm not having any issues. I waited a few months before trying things - I had my first cupcake for my sons birthday - no issues. ( I was only able to eat 1/2). Had my first popcorn at the movies - no issues ( split a small with my son- no butter) last night I had my first Subway sandwich- 6 inch flatbread. Had no problems ( took me 45 min to eat it and I was stuffed the rest of the night). I'm curious as to others- have any food issues since the revision? I have no plans to make this the norm for me, I knew that his birthday week I was going to be the 1 week I splurged ( still lost 2 pounds- before the subway sandwich)

Welcome Cheryl M. As you were told this is a wonderful site. You will do great. I just got out of the hospital with a revision of the lap band, It's just a great feeling and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Good Luck,

I was planning to have the sleeve, in fact I was set on it for over a year. After I had all my appointments, the upper GI scan showed that I have reflux, which I didn't know about. I thought I only got heartburn every once in a while. I discussed it with my doctor and he told me that the sleeve can make reflux worse, so bad in fact that he has several patients who chose to have the sleeve that are no getting revisions to bypass. Since the bypass pretty much cures reflux, I changed my mind. The bottom line is, I am having this surgery to help fix problems, not create new ones, and with that in mind the bypass was the right choice for me. I finally have my surgery on Monday, June 1st! I cannot wait! Good luck on your journey.

He hates the band and is weary of all the complications he's been seeing lately. He's had to remove a lot lately. He's also concerned about this spontaneous infection and says that the band could be encouraging it. He says a film grows on the band and bacteria can grow on it. I've also been on 4 different antibiotics and none of them seem to be working. This is the first major issue I've had with it. I wanted a revision to sleeve but my insurance says my BMI of 20 doesn't qualify me for more bariatric surgery.
-
@@Aurelia interesting. Sorry this has happened to you but glad there is no erosion. Should make healing much quicker. Why did he decide to remove the whole band and not just the port? Let us know how you get on, best wishes for a speedy recovery, do you plan to revise to another surgery type?

Feeling a lil sad and a lil displaced
LSF replied to VSGmary's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
That's the reason why I was anxious to get my band to sleeve revision done ASAP ( had it in February) mine did my band and I only trusted him and wanted him to do my surgery while he was still living here ( I think he's too young to retire but he can always move out of state). Look on the bright side, he got that damn band out of you and was able to do the sleeve before he retired. -
Band removal. Pressure for RNY over Sleeve.
Bobbe Schu replied to adorkbl's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I want to go from band to sleeve. I was to,d I need to do the whole pre op work up again which I am finding really annoying. Apparently insurance will approve removal at this point but won't even consider revision until I do the whole thing, psych, support group, etc. I just hope I don't do it all and then they still decline revision since I'm below a bmi of 40. I am like 36 right now. It might be worth your while to contact Lindstrom Obesity Advocacy. Initial consult is free. -
I know one of the reasons people choose bypass over sleeve is acid reflux or GERD. From what I've read if you have reflux before surgery it gets much worse. It also seems that some folks with the lap band or sleeve eventually get a revision to the bypass, which is the gold standard in bariatric surgery...but many, many people are happy and successful with the sleeve. Sounds like something you may wanna sit down with your surgeon and together decide. I was set on the sleeve until my pre op GI tests came back and the lap band had damaged my esophagus. He told me I may have issues with the sleeve and suggested the bypass. Best of luck on your decision and your surgery!
