August 12 is the day for me!

I am going to be banded on August 12th 2008! I been trying to get approved since Janury 10th when I first met with the Surgen Dr. Castro in Staten Island NY. He has the best track record I can find any where in NY so I know he will take care of me. I'm so nervous and scared out of my mind right now. I'm afraid that I gained weight in the last two weeks since I got my surgery date. I am supposed to be on the special diet where you practically starve yourself and since I got my date I have not been following it very well at all.. I replaced most of my snacks with either fruit or low calorie yogurt but I have been eating larger portions than I was before I got the date. My boyfriend says he thinks I'm eating ok but then again he didn't think I ate a lot to begin with, if that's the case how did I get to the point of surgery right?! I should have bough a scale to keep track of myself... Deff gotta put that on my TO - DO - LIST! My sister had the gastric bypass 3 years ago and she was over 400 lbs at the time of surgery, she is currently only 120 lbs and has skin hanging all over. I think she looks scary looking and terrible. She also has vitamin problems and can't keep any food down. She has her good days but they are few and very far between. That's why I chose the lap band:thumbup: Much less risk of all of those things and more. Also I dont want to be a bag of bones the way my sister is now. I like a lil meat on me... hopefully in the right places! If anyone is in the Brooklyn NY area E-mail me, Things like this are easier if you have a friend going through it with you.:frown: much love to everyone out there who is going for the band! -Jinx

    My Mexico Story

The first week I was to not eat fast food, cut out sugar, pop and chew my food to a paste. This week I am on liquids...jello, yogurt, protein shakes, cream soups. I have lost 7 pounds thus far. Sure it is water as I run to the bathroom alot.

    :-(

I bought one of those blender in a bottle things on Amazon and I find the Isopure dissolves better in that. When I mix it with yogurt and baby food, I have to put extra elbow grease into it, but it reminds of making pancakes out of the box. KWIM? have to use flat side of the spoon to get larger pieces down and then it's fine. I would never put in Soup. I tried once in Water, and ugh revolting. Im going thru the exact same thing and im 4 weeks out, i have developed anxiety about eating Does the ispoure mix really well?

    Pre-Op Diet OMG! I'm Dying!

Im jealous of you guys...you get shakes. Im only allowed Isopure [clear Protein ] broth and Jello. I had a hard time the first day, second day was a breeze, third day I found out insurance denied me so I had some yogurt and scrambled eggs. But, Im going to stay pretty close to this diet for awhile just because of the health benefits. Im down 27lbs since January, 6 of which were the last 3 days. Im pretty bummed about the denial but we are fighting it and shooting for July. And yes I agree on giving up the high carb shakes. They wont help curb your appetite and will damper tge results of liver shrinking. Sent from my SM-G900P using the BariatricPal App
  5. I know we all have differing pre op liquid diets but could yall give me a few tips and pointers? My liquid diet is 2 weeks of Protein shakes, clear and cream Soups (strained) sugar free Jello and pudding and yogurt. Any combinations that were tasty and filling for yall? I have Isopure unflavored Protein powder to mix into pretty much everything i eat so getting my protein in wont be a huge issue. Just looking for a few creative ideas that will make this a little easier. Thanks in advance for your responses!!
  6. My really low-fat healthy buffalo chicken dip recipe has the plain greek yogurt in it (the fat-free). It's posted on the recipe forum if anyone is interested, but basically it's FF cream cheese, FF ranch (I just use my daughter's bolthouse yogurt ranch), FF greek yogurt, part-skim shredded mozz cheese, canned chicken breast, and frank's red hot. YUM!!! I did make my last batch with LF cream cheese instead of FF. I did a recipe builder on it and with LF cream cheese and the yogurt ranch dressing, it has about 100 calories, 5 grams of fat, less than 2 grams of carbs and 12.5 grams of Protein in a 1/4 cup serving. WOOT! It rocks with celery sticks or a few reduced fat wheat thins.
  7. Hi all. I had GB on 1-18 and just started puréed foods. I didn't get a sample diet, just a list of foods to eat: Baby food, cottage cheese, yogurt etc. don't even know when to drink Protein shakes in between all this. I can only see my nut 3x a year, and haven't even seen her since I had my surgery. I tried to see her the day of my 1 week check up, but was told that I could not because they wouldn't be able to bill insurance for it because it was same day as doctor visit. Can anyone give me a sample diet or some advice in what you are doing during the puréed stage? I was only told by doctor to get in about 60g protein. I almost feel like I was just discarded now that I had the surgery. Thanks!! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Mushies stage, did anyone have baby food?

I can understand why you think baby food may help but don't do it! During this stage I use this website http://www.advancedbariatricsurgery.com/forum/?f=10 and I add plain greek yogurt in everything. Remember Protein! Protein! Protein! Good Luck
  9. @Creekimp13 - Thank your daughter for me! This is excellent advice. My body seems to have self corrected finally. I've been eating greek yogurt and probiotics, taking meds and added a little more of the BRAT diet (basic foods for the body to breakdown - Bananas, rice, applesauce, toast - so basic carbs) and it seems to be helping.
  10. Only advice I can offer is to build good populations of good gut bugs. My kiddo is a microbiology major who just went to a lecture on gut microbiota and fecal transplant (yep, this is a thing) and she was telling me that a lot of chronic constipation and diarrhea issues can be related to out of balance gut microbiota. How can you improve your gut bugs? Eat quality dietary fiber... 30g a day for the gals. More for the guys. (obviously, discuss this with your doctor) Fiber feeds the most beneficial gut bugs and helps them re-establish healthy populations when they've been wiped out by antibiotics, or dealing with the new conditions of a modified gut. Here's a cool list: https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/in-depth/high-fiber-foods/art-20050948 Also, try to eat cultured and fermented foods...yogurt, miso, pickles, sauerkraut, kefir, cheeses. The key...she says...is not quantity...it's diversity. Don't overdo portions, but mix up the variety a lot. Just a little bite of each kind of thing adds up to benefits.
  11. I was banded on Friday, 12/11. The vicodin made me extremely nauseated and as I'm not supposed to vomit, I didn't take it. The gas pain in my shoulder was bad but it is tolerable. The worst is the pain in my right side. It feels like my guts are being ripped out (sorry if that's too graphic.) I also had trouble breathing but that is getting better. I am coughing all the time though and when I cough it kills me - on the right side. I can't bend over to pick anything up. Also, I couldn't tell if I was hungry or full but now I'm starving! I'm afraid to eat too much as I don't want to get sick. I was on clear liquids but today was supposed to start full liquids. My doctor says no jello (says it will get stuck) and didn't mention anything about pudding but others say they do pudding so I'm confused. When I do eat, it isn't keeping me full long enough, I don't think. I'm supposed to be doing something every hour (water, protein shake, juice, milk, gatorade, yogurt, broth, creamed soup, etc.) I am just overwhelmed by this whole situation......
  12. As soon as I over the initial surgery, I was ready for something more substantial. I had yogurt on the flight home - 3 days post op. I didn't go crazy but did move to thicker foods the first week. For me, I needed more than Clear Liquids to feel better. I did the premade shakes (Atkins, Nutrilite, Premier), cottage cheese, potato soup, mashed potatoes. I tried a couple of protein powders and thot they were horrid. I tried mixing them into my hot farina Cereal in the morning. Not great, even with baby fruit added in for taste. A nurse who had surgery at the same time, wrote to me that the drs she worked with said anything mushy and tolerated was ok. I did stay away from crunchy, seeds, etc. Have you seen this link yet? http://www.cornellweightlosssurgery.org/pdf/dietary_guidelines_sleeve_gastrectomy.pdf It is a difficult adjustment; the entire experience has been harder for me mentally than physically. I crave Wendy's tho, not McD's! lol It will get easier
  13. You didn't even like the Oikos fruit on the bottom? I think those are soo good. They also have Chobani Champions, a kid- friendly Greek yogurt that is much sweeter.
  14. Thanks for great suggestions Doris I love the idea of buying a low fat yogurt and add some unflavored Protein Thanks!!!
  15. i'm not there yet, so my question is...why does it have to be Greek yogurt? Is there more protein in it?
  16. I hate Greek yogurt, too. Never could find a brand I liked. Early in the full liquids phase, I realized I was going to have to figure out a Protein source, so I used legumes--Beans, peas, Peanut Butter, soy products--all of which can be blended, mashed, hidden in other foods (I snuck rinsed white beans into smoothies--yummy and completely not "beany" flavored). I also smushed up cottage cheese into a creamier texture, and that worked well. You might also try ricotta cheese with sweetener, vanilla, or cinnamon on it--I liked to put some orange or almond flavor in there and stir--it's like eating cheesecake filling, but good for you. :-) I use the lower-fat ricotta because I prefer the texture to the full-fat one.
  17. Eggs, meat (tuna, salmon & chicken breast give you the most bang for your buck), peanut butter, cottage cheese, yogurt (greek is best)...these are all great sources of protein. I haven't done it myself, but I've seen people talking about adding protein powder to their yogurt to boost the protein. Also, the Livestrong website has a pretty good basic list. There are LOTS of high protein meal cookbooks on Amazon, and as I mentioned in another post the other day, there is even a "Dummies" book for people who have had weight loss surgery. There are lots of tasty looking recipes in it.

Denise : I am so jealous, peas, onion rings, mac and cheese? I haven't been able to eat those things since my surgery. You go girl!!! Um...those things are what is keeping me from losing weight!!! I think I need a fill. I'm at that point where I'm restricted, but food just doesn't sit in the pouch for any length of time, and then I eat again. Breakfast Sunday: (after the tub of onion rings and the cocktails last night, I thought it best to eat something simple) Low fat Yogurt

  22. I went in for a fill yesterday and got 1cc added, for a total of 9ccs (in a 14 cc band). In the past, I'd feel great after a fill and within a week or two could eat anything/as much as I wanted. So frustrating! My doctor thinks that I swell pretty significiantly after a fill and suggests that, even thought it's uncomfortable, I need to get over the hump of being swollen and when the swelling goes down, I'll be in the green. How long until the swelling goes down? I'm tight!!! I can keep Water down, but I'm definitely not comfortable nor can I eat anything more than Soup, applesauce and yogurt...and very little at that. I've probably had 300 calories in the past 24 hours. I just want this feeling of being sore to go away and be in the green!

    Fave protien snack?

I love beef and turkey jerky - also Ostrim which is ostrich jerky! And for a real treat, marlin jerky (only for people who like fish)! It is delicious and has a higher protein to calorie ratio than beef, turkey, or ostrich jerky. Other things I like: Greek yogurt with a little PB2 stirred in, cottage cheese with hot sauce, roasted edamame, roasted garbanzo beans.

    Fave protien snack?

How far out before you tried the ranch powder? I was told as long as it didn't add texture I could have it, I could even add a squeeze of ranch dressing to my cottage cheese, or to my finely chopped chicken salad. (I used homemade ranch made with plain greek yogurt in place of mayo) I also do jerky (after 6 months) and I love hard boiled eggs. I boil about 12 eggs on sunday evening and store them in the fridge, I grab one egg and a string cheese. I have pet sugar gliders, and they eat them too, so they are never wasted. I also use them to give my dog her medicine. We go through a few dozen eggs a week at my house, I buy them from a local farm, and they are amazing. I usually eat all of the white, and maybe 1/4 of the yolk. The sugar gliders get the rest of the yolk as a treat, or it gets split between my 3 dogs. I plan on making pickled eggs this summer, it's been a tradition in my family for generations, and they are soooo good. I also keep a pack of low sodium turkey bacon cooked and in snack sized bags in the fridge, 2 slices to a bag. I cook it in the oven on a cooling rack over a rimmed cookie sheet, it cooks nice and crisp, and perfectly flat. Also it doesn't shrink so 2 slices is a perfect go to with a stick of string cheese. I don't eat pork, but my family does, and I make their bacon the same way, except because it makes such a mess, I do 3 or 6 pounds at a time, and then wrap it in wax paper, and freeze it in quart freezer bags. When they want bacon, they just take it out and pop it in the microwave for 20-40 seconds and they have perfect bacon. I also use it in recipes, and to top salads and Soups for them. Last but not least, I keep imitation crab in the fridge, it's higher in calories, but it's better than grabbing chips or crackers. I'm also hooked on apples with peanut or cashew butter on them. Yum!
  25. Hi Wannabthin, I had my sleeve surgery on 5/21, so about the same time as you. My pre surgery weigh-in was 289 (down 6 lbs from liquid diet) I lost 10 lbs my first week out and another 8 over the next few days. I stalled out at 271 and have been sitting here for over a week now. I am slowly increasing my cals ( from 250 up to 550) but am only getting 45-50 protein a day. I am not tolerating the protein powder and milk anymore so most of my protein is coming from the scrambled egg and plain yogurt mixed with tuna fish. I have been extremely worried about this stalling out too. It is encouraging to see that I am not the only one and that there may still be a light at the end of the tunnel. Anyone who has experienced this before who has tips to offer on how to get over this hump will be much appreciated.
