    Food Serving Size

While I was briefly on stage 4 (had to be moved back to 3 because of an abscess), I could only eat 1/4C. I was never really given any measurements and was able to eat a whole yogurt, so I tried 1/2C Soup and was miserable! There is nothing worse than the feeling of food in your throat and you really cant do anything about it.

    Eating & morning exercise

I am having the same struggle....as @@jess9395 mentioned - my doc also considered a Protein shake drinking and not eating. I think my plan going forward is to drink Water and protein shake while on my way to the gym and at the gym.... then just take like a greek yogurt or something to work and eat it at work to get in something for breakfast. Maybe something like that would work for you as well?

    Eating & morning exercise

My routine is wake up, drink some Water. 30 minutes later I have some yogurt and fruit or a Protein shake. do laundry or computer tasks while I digest. Get to the gym 30-60 minutes later.
  4. After getting my surgery date of July 28 a few weeks ago, I have been a big ball of emotions. I knew in my heart this is what I was working towards- but surgery is just scary! My ultimate fear is dying during the procedure for whatever reason. After I met with my surgeon for the 3rd time, the practice nurse, and an anesthesiologist from the hospital, I feel more at ease. All three described the typical routine that is followed before/during/after surgery and what I can expect. I even asked my doctor for a video of my surgery and he's going to see whether he can record it for me (yes, I know that's odd...but I like medical stuff!). I've had my last big weekend of eating whatever I wanted. Tomorrow starts my 2 week liquid diet. I can have 8oz of a protein drink for my 3 main meals. I can also have 2 snacks during the day- sugar free yogurt, jello, or popsicles. I can have as much to drink as I want so long as it's not a caloric beverage. I have been asked many times what my goal weight is and I give the same answer every time: I have no idea. I'm 5,10" and at my highest I was 445 lbs. I am currently 425 and hope to be around 410-415 at surgery. If I could get down to 220, that'd be amazing! I figure if I get down to that, I'll be happy. If I go beyond that, that'll just be a bonus. I am also thinking that when I get my skin removal surgery in about 3 years, I will probably lose another 15-20 just with the skin, etc that will be removed. All in all, I feel like I am in a good place mentally. I know what I need to do, I have the supplies I need to do what I need to do, and I have the supports I will need. I know this is going to be a hard journey with some rough spots along the way, but I am up for this exciting journey so I can get on with my life and live it up!
  5. Hey Janet86! I'm 12 days out and almost no pain other when I sneeze or bend over quickly. The first five days I was pretty crappy feeling, but nothing sitting around and resting didn't cure. I mainly use Bariatric Advantage shakes in vanilla and Orange Cream. They're on the thicker side, but I like that. My go to Protein is Nutrimed punch, lemonade and strawberry powders. I get them at my surgeons office, but they're the same as Medical Weight Loss or Lindoras clinic drinks. They taste like crystal light but have 12-15 grams of protein in them. I also use unjury chicken broth the first few days because warm felt better than cold to me. The Unjury plain I use all the time as an add in to Soups and yogurt. By using these supplements I have no problem getting in all my protein and fluids. I've been given the ok to start on puréed foods, but honestly other than adding retried Beans and Greek yogurt this week, I haven't started yet. Kind of scared because if I don't completely liquidate Jello in my mouth I feel it going down! I have a LOT of air bubble! Gas X is a miracle worker. Buy thee or four boxes ahead of time. I use one whenever I eat because it makes it easier and less painful. Last night I went to a party and did great. No one noticed I didn't eat anything other than a Virgin Mary and a Popsicle. I have no idea why they had them, but I was glad they did! Good luck and keep telling yourself "this, too, will pass!"
  6. Ok, I have always had a hard time trying to figure out food and morning exercise, but now I am even more confused. If I get up and drink Water, then I have to wait 30 minutes before eating and then exercise but can't drink while I am exercising. That won't work. (Honestly even without the exercise, I have a hard time with eating in the morning, generally just doing a Protein shake while I am driving to work.) So this morning I had extra time, so I had 3 Tbsp greek yogurt and then waited about 30 minutes and went for a 45 minute walk. I did drink about 8 oz water while I was walking but man was I dizzy and wiped out when I got back. I knew I hadn't had enough Fluid but also not enough protein, so I drank my Premier Protein Drink but Ugh it took a while. It kept bubbling up and gurgling like I was drinking too fast (though not any faster than normal). Exercise actually makes me tired, so I don't know that I will ever be able to work it in before work (other than a quick brief spin on the treadmill maybe), but for those days when I do have extra time....Suggestions? What is the best way for this to work and not pass out afterwards?

    Getting the protein in

I have a scoop of Genepro protein (30g) powder in my decaf coffee every morning followed by Oiskos Triple Zero Yogurt (1/2 container has 7.5 g) for breakfast. For lunch I will have grilled chicken breast (2 oz gets me about 11g) and some cucumber so I don't go crazy from all protein all the time. For dinner I've been making soups or eating beans where I'll usually get 6-10 g. Depending where I fall for the day I will drink 1/2 of an Isopure icy orange (I am one of the few that can stand them) According to the app I use Lose It I average about 72 grams of protein a day.

    Normal foods

Awesome topic. I've been wondering about the things i've read too. Several people saying they eat ANYTHING they want, just smaller portions. Honestly, it would be nice maybe 8months to a year down the mine to be able to have a cup of chow mein or a slice of pizza here and there, but as of now, i think its most important to train myself to eat well. I havent had a cheeseburger in almost 3 months and i'm amazed at how I dont crave it anymore. Im actually craving hummus and greek yogurt. Lol i'm almost 20days post op and if I start thinking I might be able to slide in chips or dessert soon then it's going to create a slippery slope. I know myself lol anyway, best of luck to everyone!

    July 9-21 Surgery Buddies?

You eating puree food?? I had mine July 7th. I'm on Jello and chicken broth and I never get full. I'm starving:( I'm still on liquids, but get to have cottage cheese and yogurt. I don't feel hungry, and only a couple of small bites make me feel like I ate too much, but I'm getting used to it. Next week I get to start the puree food, looking forward to that. I did read that if you feel hungry, you might be dehydrated and need to drink more liquids, hope that helps. I must really suck to go through this and still feel hungry :-(

    Stall :( it sucks

Once every 4-6 days you increase your carb intake to about 100 plus grams a day. With healthy carbs. Yogurt oatmeal fruits beans nut butters nuts etc. (also workout hard on these days) then follow the next day with very little carbs then the next day with moderate amounts of carbs etc..... This boosts metabolism and gets you out if "starvation mode" There are lots of articles about carb cycling out there. It got me out of a stall and body builders do it. It works!

    Stage 3 food question

I have a hard time picturing myself eating a salad at this point. The chew chew chewing along would not make it worthwhile to me. In any event, it's not on my plan for stage 3. For me stage 3 is "soft foods" only. Examples (for me), moist (there's that word) chicken, turkey, cheese, deli chicken, turkey, tuna, etc. Applesauce, yogurt, cooked (canned) carrots. These are just a few on my plan. Not sure if they are ok on your plan. Good luck.

    Stage 3 food question

Salad is down he road in a few months.Protein and protein should all be on your mind. Eggs, tofu, yogurt, small curd cottage cheese are your soft foods at this time.all surgeons are different in their believes, you should still have access to their nutritionist in his / her Office. remember your stomach is still healing at this stage.

    Soft food options

Any type of fish, chicken breast with fat free gravy, cream of mushroom soup or low sugar BBQ sauce, cottage cheese, yogurt, cooked carrots, ground beef with fat free beef gravy & mushrooms.

    Vegetarian?

I think with lots of planning it is possible. Tofu. Nuts. Cheese w/o rennet, quinoa, kale is surpringly high in protein, almond milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, eggs... Google or others here can surely help. Good luck and let us know how you proceed.. You could help others⭐️

    Getting the protein in

I would double check but I think 3 times a day is awful low when I was doing the soft foods it was once every two hours 1 to 3 ounces of a cottage cheese Greek yogurt egg white something along that nature and you were getting in peanut butter something that would help you but three times a day is awful short
  16. I had the long limb RNY and can't process the full fats, sadly, and my surgeon said that I couldn't eat it either. I have tried to eat the other stuff and gotten very sick trying! So, I work with what I've got! I use 1 tbs of low fat mayo and 1 tbs of Fage 0% plain yogurt, then I add onion and garlic powder and other seasonings and enjoy! It tastes great and fills me up! 16 days post op

Hi I'm 16 days too!! I started puree stage yesterday. So far I've had half cup of refried beans that were thinned with some water. They sat well overnight so i had again today for lunch. I had plain yogurt in liquid stage. Now can have with fruit added. I did wait for my two week follow up with the surgeon. You should follow your surgeon's plan. They all seem to be different.
  18. Hi all, I am 16 days post op my doctor said I can add sugar free applesauce and plain greek yogurt in addition to the full liquids. I am reading my book and curious can I start some of the semi-solids yet?

    Eggs

One scrambled really soft to an almost custard consistency with a bit of Greek yogurt & shredded cheese mixed in. The first one took me nearly an hour to eat.

    Food stuck - suggestions?

I'm revising from the band to bypass--and it is mostly due to the fact that almost everything I have eaten for 6 years gets stuck. Its a miserable feeling! But here are the tips I have learned along the way: 1.) I NEVER try to push food down with liquid. It literally will only bring the liquid up. I only drink when I am at my wits end and know that vomiting the food up is the only way to get relief, but it's a last resort. 2.) Get up and move. The sitting position does not help the food settle. 3.) After a "stuck" episode go onto shakes/liquids/yogurt for at least 12 hours to let everything heal. Your esophagus just had a traumatic events, and if it doesn't rest, it's likely to happen again the next time. Hope that helps, and I sincerely hope it doesn't happen again!

    Protein Shake Questions

My NUT said I could add fruit, yogurt, or peanut butter to my shakes. So definitely ask if your plan allows it, it does help. I managed to survive on EAS advantEDGE shakes before I discovered unjury. I do mix the sorbet flavor with crystal light - and there are a ton of flavor of crystal light/Mio for you to play with.

    Food

It seems like you are trying to consume too much at one time. I had my surgery May 27 and am still only able to consume 2 ounces of any type of food like jello, pudding, yogurt... You have to remember you just had surgery and it takes time. My first week out I was so bad that I dehydrated myself, so my nutritionist had me focus on only fluids for three days and then work back in the protein. I finally on the advice of another person got Fairlife milk, which has 13 g of protein, mixed it with my 1/2 scoop of my protein powder, which gave me 32 g of protein and 8 ounces of liquid. Three of those gave me sufficient protein and 1/2 of my liquid consumption. I also cannot seem to drink anything cold, other than my milk, room temp seems to be the best and water is the hardest for me to get down.

    Grocery shopping!

I tried to plan it all out as well. My taste buds changed after surgery. Pre-op I loved cottage cheese and coconut Water. Post-op both of these items make me ill. Greek yogurt and unjury Protein shakes were my friends in the first weeks post op. Don't stock up on too much of any one thing as you may have different tastes after the surgery.
  24. Diet soda is a no-no! I use light mayo and Greek plain yogurt together! Really great in the tuna! Lower fat and more protein
  25. BLERDgirl
