    When is your surgery?

Welcome Nancy! I'm Nov. 10 also with Dr. Geiss in Syosset.

    Dr. Robert Pinnar

He will be doing my surgery 10/21 (been resched a few times due to illness). I tried as hard as I could and couldn't find anything negative about him. I thought he was very nice and he made me very comfortable. As w/any lap band office I guess-consider how you feel about his physician assistant (Paul) and the nurse (Sue). You will really only be seeing them so how you click w/them is important. You wont actually meet the doctor on your first visit..just Paul. I would love to hear what you think of them! Good luck:)

    First Fill

First of all, did your dr say you could eat regular food after getting a fill? I know most drs say to wait 24 hrs on full liquids before trying food. Some are even longer. And it took me until my 3rd fill (4 mths into it) until I felt any difference at all. For the future tho, sometimes you can feel the restriciton right away, sometimes it takes up to 10 days to feel any difference. No clue why. You have to be patient. Unless your one of maybe 1,000 bandsters, you're not gunna feel any difference for a few fills. Good luck! Marci
  4. Hang in there Karen. I lost nearly 17 lbs. during the two week pre-op diet and since the surgery, about two months ago, 19 more lbs. So...what took two weeks to lose before the surgery, took eight weeks to lose after. Try not to focus on the scale... I know it's hard to do, but try to ignore it. FYI, I joined the 'Y' today. They're saying bad weather tomorrow starting in the afternoon so I'll look to start on Tuesday after work.
  5. How do I get over a 3 week stall? How long will I lose my hair? I have cut it short but it is getting very thin? Help?? I was sleeved 2/19/2014

My husband is going to rebel!

I know they have a lot of salt. I am trying to win him over slowly by starting this way...I love chickpeas. LOL It's not about me it is about him. He loves salt and oil and bad stuff. I at least give him lentils...It's a start but he is not taking it well.. You know those guys who miss a meal and loses 10 lbs. That is my hubby!!!
  7. Sounds crazy, doesn't it? I've had a couple half days off work and have been breaking my butt the past five days doing spring clean up. Tons of raking, mowing, pulling out vines, cutting down scrap vegetation, chopping out huge piles of stuff to burn, cleaning the tree line, cleaning up raised garden beds, tilling. Doing stuff i've wanted to do for years:) It really feels amazing to work outside for most of the day and not be out of breath after half an hour. I never thought I'd get back to this level of stamina or energy. It's amazing to me, and I am LOVING it! And ON TOP of the very cool reality that I'm gonna have a veggie garden and awesome herb garden this year (and a super tidy gorgeous yard)....this little spurt of added exercise has kicked my metabolism into gear and i've lost 10 pounds in the last month.....which is pretty darned cool given that the previous two months had slowed down to 5-6 pound losses. Yard work isn't generally something people write home about and enjoy.......but this year, it couldn't be more welcome:)

    Telling people at work

I am also in healthcare and have thought the same thing. Remember the HIPAA rules and that it's nobody's business but yours. You don't even have to explain to your boss. You are right about people will talk. I hate to tell you this, but I know from experience that they are also talking now. I had a lead person ask if I really needed scrubs that big. I think I'd rather have them talk about how great I'm looking and how healthy I'll be, and yes, that it's even time I "did something" about my weight. My mom makes comments that she doesn't realize hurt like a knife cut. She says how fat people are disgusting, etc. I can't wait to see her reaction, for I'm not going to tell her about the surgery until after she sees me for the first time. I have been contemplating WLS for almost 10 years. It's about time for me to do it. My recent visit to my doctor shows that I am now diabetic, after having been pre-diabetic for almost 10 years. I also have several other weight related issues. She thinks WLS is a really option and even put in a consult for me. Now I will wait for the surgeon's office to call. I am planning on going to their seminar too. I am excited and can't wait to do this!

Low BMI - any out there!

I was a BMI of 30 (barely) and had it done in June 2012. My size 18 jeans were getting tight and nothing I did at the age of 54 made a dent in the loss. Started out at 172 and hit 98 pounds from June to January. The 98 pounds was way too thin so I upped my calorie intake and got to 105. I gained 10 last year when I got on some thyroid meds so I stopped those and the gain stopped. Sticking to 115 now and happy with that. I wear a 1 - 4 jean depending on the cut and brand.

    Sore legs post-op

No swelling at all. Keeping mobile and walking a lot. I'm hoping it's just from not using them for the last few days other than for strolls around the hospital with my IV pole. Now that I'm home, I've been sure to walk for 5-10 minutes every hour to keep the blood pumping.

    Help! Hair loss!

I just had my 3-month post-op appointment and my surgeon said it's pretty much unavoidable. Generally your hair falls out 3 months after the event that triggered it, so my surgeon stresses the importance of protein immediately post-op. I got all of mine in and am still losing hair, but I figure it could be worse and maybe the protein kept it at bay somewhat. My hair is past my shoulders so I think even a small loss looks like more because the hair is longer. I take biotin and surgeon said he doesn't know if it helps, but it can't hurt. I have also heard that zinc might help, but I don't take it. The surgeon also said the surgery itself and the anesthesia can trigger hair loss. Mine started at 10 or 11 weeks. Hopefully this too shall pass.
  13. Thank you so much for your kind words. Looking forward to a healthier 2019. I'm grateful to be on only 2 of the 4 blood pressure meds.that I took prior to surgery. That was a gift in itself!

Switching surgeons - is it possible?

I'm in the middle of that now actually. I haven't gotten as far into the process as you, but I felt the same way about the surgeon with my first consultation. Although I'm doing the sleep study through the first surgeon, I'm doing everything else with the second one who took the time with me and didn't rush me in anyway. The second surgeon is willing to take the sleep paperwork bc it was from a bariatric program. You have to go with who you feel comfortable with. I'm scared of getting the surgery; I've been dragging my feet on it for about 10 years. Now, I make sure I'm with an experienced surgeon who takes the time for me. Good luck!! 17. Hello from VA. I've been banded for a while but due to some health issues I'm re-starting from scratch. October 2006 my band was installed then filled the last week in Dec. I consistently lost 10 pounds per month. I'd lost 35 pounds when I had to have my band deflated for a year (nothing to do w/ the band) and gained back 33 pounds. Now I've begun my journey again. In 2 months I've lost a mere 10.5 pounds. My band was filled in mid Jan. I had another fill 2 weeks ago. I'm not doing as well this time as I did the last. I'm worried my pouch has stretched, dilated as they say because I can eat a lot more food than I used to. I feel Hot drinks or very cold drinks go right through to my "bottom stomach." I don't remember if I felt that the last time. I feel kind of out of sorts. Anybody who's had to get back on track have any suggestions? Congratulations to all the new banders!! I know this process works because it worked for me once and will work again. Pixiedust
  18. I'm so excited!! I got on the scales this morning and I have lost 50.5 pounds!!! I started this journey at the end of May when I was diagnosed as pre-diabetic. My doctor said either diet/exercise or medication. I chose to try the diet and exercise. I had been thinking about lapband for several months and finally decided to have the surgery. Boy have I not regretted my decision!!!! I started out at 228 and am now 177.4!! 50 pounds was my first big goal. Now I'm pushing for 75. My family (other than my husband) can finally see that I am loosing weight. :-) I have also been cleaning out my clothes. I have given away about 3-33 gallon garbage bags full of clothes. I am down to 4 pairs of pants! I couldn't be more excited. I stared out in a size 18/20 top and bottom and am now in a size 13/14 pant and a large top. I actually have a couple of pairs of pants that have elastic waist and they are a size 8/10. They are tight but they fit. :-) If they don't have elastic I have to get the bigger size. :-( I would like to thank everyone on here for their advise and wisdom!! I have read lots and lots of post and feel that I learned alot about what to do and not to do with my band. So, THANK YOU everyone!!!

    Any MN Sleevers?

I'm a little over 10 months out and since surgery I've lost about 85 pounds. Since my highest weight I've lost 190 though. I have been feeling pretty great. No regrets. I thought the holidays would be difficult, but I found that I wasn't as interested in food as I was in past years. I've been in a stall since September, but a few days ago I just felt horribly nauseous all the time and it turned me off from foods that I was having issues controlling myself around (like sugar) and I've managed to start losing again. I had my surgery at HCMC because I work for the county and the insurance paid for everything (except my copay). I've really liked the surgical team there. I'm having a hard time this year getting used to the cold though. I lost all of my insulation, so I keep a sweater and a sweatshirt at work for days when I'm freezing. The last few days I've had to double up on my coats too. :-P

    My incredible year

Thanks for this. I had surgery 10/2/14 so I am exactly a year after you. I hope to do as well as you have!
  21. My surgeon didn't put me on a complete liquid diet. I was allowed 2 protein shakes and one lean cuisine meal everyday for two weeks and I was fine. But to be honest, I cheated a couple of times, but made it. On my surgery date, I found that I still lost 10 pounds. The shakes I used helped me with hunger because of high protein. And I ate my meal late so I wouldn't be awake too long afterwards. Just keep it up, you will make it. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using BariatricPal mobile app
  22. I was sleeved 10/14. I was never nauseous before surgery. Now, things are different. I don’t feel hungry anymore, but when it’s close to a time for me to eat (for example when I wake up in the morning before I eat breakfast), I feel nauseous. Same if I have a late lunch - I will feel nauseous until I eat something. After I eat, nausea goes away. Problem is, I don’t have much appetite, nothing is appealing when you’re nauseous so it’s hard to force myself to eat a few bites to relieve the nausea. Has anyone else experienced anything similar? Tips to relieve the nausea?

    Just Starting

You can watch some great YouTube videos by Erin Branscom (My Level 10 Life) about the process. I liked them so much I joined her facebook group, and I never do stuff like that (I don't agree with everything she says). I have never heard of anyone coming home on oxygen. Mostly for sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass (the most common WLSurgeries) they are done with small incisions, and I can't imagine why you would need to come home on oxygen unless you required oxygen before surgery. At the consult the surgeon will probably take a medical/surgical history and talk to you about the various procedures. I haven't had surgery yet so I can't answer most of your questions.
  24. Hello all! I'm having surgery on 10/19 with Dr. Marsden in DFW. Anyone else on the site use him? He seems very nice and I know he's done thousands of procedures - just curious if anyone else has used him? Any advice, or what to expect would be much appreciated! Looking forward to my last diet ever

    HELLO restriction!

Most feel it is due to a fluid shift in your body and it makes sense to me. If I am really tight in the morning and go run for about 10-15 minutes, everything opens right up. Gravity messes with fluids and when you've been sleeping all night fluids settle. When you are up and moving things improve.
