Weight Loss Advice 'ignores Body Changes'

Well, day 21 of 120 days to goal by following 730 cals a day and high energy output and .......... nada. zero, zilch. I have yet to lose any weight.
  2. Trust me it will get so much better! I was the same way! 65lbs and only down 2 sizes! I was so mad and frustrated for so long but then seriously in the blink of an eye I am in a 12... And a 10 is not far behind (I just bought the 12s last week!!) That chart someone posted with the inches of hips and size seems to be right on target for me. Congrats on all the weight you have lost!
  3. I don't see how it can't help. I have low back problems and visit a chiropractor a few times a month. My low back issues are a combo of my weight making my spinal curvature hyperlordosis as well as my sacro/illiac joint being out of alignment, which is probably unrelated as much to my weight.
  4. I don't have any major back problems but I did have problems with sciatica at least twice each year. Now that I've dropped some of the excess weight I haven't had sciatica in the past two years. Hope the surgery helps with your pain and back issues.

    Not losing consistently

Thank you. I'm afraid to stop weighing daily. In the past, the only time I've been consistent in my weight loss has been when I weighed daily and kept myself accountable. I'm terrified if I stop, I will weigh myself only to discover I'm 20lbs heavier. I know it's not rational though, but the fear and anxiety is real.

    Not losing consistently

I've averaged about 10 pounds a month in the 6 months since I've had my surgery (down 64 since surgery, 94 total). My loss is much slower than I expected it to be and even got discouraged early on because my surgeon asked me why I wasn't losing more weight at my first 2 post op appointments. I've noticed that I tend to lose on a pattern and I stall every month for 1-2 weeks around my period. It's frustrating but it's my bodies way to dealing with this process so I've come to accept it. I started this process a year ago July 19th and I'm down just under 100 pounds so the frustration and stress has been worth it in the long run. I would like to lose another 37 pounds to reach my ultimate goal.

    Not losing consistently

As a diabetic, your kidneys are already stressed. Ketosis adds stress (per my nutritionist, CNP, ENT and Sur) so it's not advisable, at least it was not advisable per the professional overseeing my case. I know every program, surgeon and doctor is different. 1. I'm not a normal weight person so until I see results (aka, I'm in a normal or even overweight BMI), I can't say life is better or not. 2. I was actually happy with my body. I was never ashamed to be fat, I worked out and had good relationships with my friends, family and husband. I didn't care once what others thought of me and my weight. I was however, sick, and that's why I had the surgery. Yes it helped that, but I am more stressed now than I was before. Before I knew what I was doing, where I was failing. I feel like I am fumbling in the dark at the moment, just hoping I'll come across the right formula.
  8. I was sleeved in Aug 2014 and lost 130lbs and got to my goal weight of 165lbs. In January 2017 I got pregnant (not on purpose) and had my baby Oct 2017. My starting weight when I got pregnant was 172 and I gained about 43lbs. I am down to 195lb so I still have about 25-30 to lose. I had my first child (July 2009) when I was 270lbs and everything was MUCH harder and I only gained 19lbs. I ended up having a c-section with him but I am not convinced that was weight related so much as it was a provider issue. He was 8.4lbs (I am 5'10) but I measure super small during both pregnancies. I didn't have gestational diabetes with either pregnancy. With second baby weighed 8.8lbs and I measured small (several weeks behind) as well. I was unable to breastfeed either baby but that is unrelated to weight. Definitely concentrate on yourself first and THEN get pregnant. As almost a 4 year veteran I am struggling to get the baby weight off and it gets much harder as you get further out because your pouch isn't as restrictive. Plus during pregnancy you will find a way to eat more. As for deliveries- I had a unnecessary c-section with my first and a successful VBAC with my last in Oct '17. Find a provider that is supportive of low intervention methods and willing to wait it out and let you move during labor. There was an 8 year gap between my deliveries and had I known then what I know now I wouldn't have had to a c-section the first time.

    Too Many Meds

I am still taking my BP meds. Unfortunately because I'm so close to goal and still having BP issues, my doc thinks it is likely hereditary rather than weight-related. My mom, dad and brother all have BP issues too so that would make sense. Luckily I had no other co-morbidities.

    Too Many Meds

I am type 2 diabetic I was taking maximum of diabetic tabs. plus insulin in evening. I was in the hospital 2 days and the day I left I was given 10u insulin and that was the last day! I am 4plus mo. and my morning sugars are around 116 I still take a BP med. but it is now a low dose. The weight loss is a bonus! Good luck to you!
  11. This is my last month of waiting! I have my last NUT appt at the end of this month and we submit on Oct 5th! It's literally almost here! Now if I can just avoid gaining any weight between now and then!
  12. My read of it is that they aren't specifically talking about weight loss diets, but general good health, so a 2000 calorie diet is the typical "standard" adult diet (that's what most of the RDA's are based upon - then you adjust those according to what calorie level is appropriate for your individual weight maintenance needs.) Their findings aren't really anything new, but merely a continuation of the evolution of nutrition science, which still holds that for optimum health we need a balance of various micro and macro nutrients, spread through the various food groups. One of the salient points they bring up, one that I have long followed, is that the quality of the food, whether they be carbs, fats or proteins, is a lot more important than the quantity. This is why these fad diets that hold to certain magical macro counts or ratios tend to be pretty silly - and we see that sometime in these forums. Some may hold to that magical 20, 30 or 40g carb count, and then skip the "carbs" in that apple or broccoli to save up for that Snickers bar in their carb budget. I never worried about carb or fat counts while I was losing (and still don't) as the restricted calories and protein minima in the early post op world took care of that; rather I just worked to maintain as healthy a balance of foods as I reasonably could within my calorie budget; on average I ran around 100g of carbohydrates per day, but I was still working to slow down the loss rate at the six month mark. I actually increased my average carb count selectively at around the 4 month mark to promote better exercise endurance, and my weight loss trends improved (they stayed steady rather than declined as is typical) as that probably helped promote a marginally better calorie burn rate. The other benefit of using a more "normal" diet during the weight loss phase is that the transition to maintenance was much easier, as my maintenance diet is fundamentally the same as the "loss" diet - just more calories from the non-protein side of the diet spectrum (as protein should already be at a maintenance level during the loss phase.) I didn't have to learn a new diet for maintenance, nor have to switch diets to lose again if needed - just adjust the calories as needed.
  13. you're right, probably not bariatric patients - but for normal people, 2000 calories a day is pretty standard. So is 225 carbs. Unfortunately, it seems like few of us bariatric types can eat like that and maintain our weight. Not fair, but, it is what it is...

    Cardio

To be honest, I would choose the elliptical (and usually do) - but mostly because it challenges me more and makes me fitter. The more my heart rate gets up and I sweat, the more I am training my heart and lungs, and improving my cardiovascular health. The fact that it is also making my weight melt away (11 lbs last month) is a bonus. Walking is proven great, and anything is better than nothing. Do what you will continue to do long-term.

    Stuck Already?!

The first 4-6 weeks after surgery aren't for losing weight, they're for healing. It's very common for people not to lose weight, even gain some weight, during the healing phase.

    Stuck Already?!

Please don't take this the wrong way. It only been 5 days. The first 10 pounds (maybe more) was water weight. You now need to either burn 3500 cals or cut 3500 cals from your food intake in order to loose 1 pound.! Also some people gain a few pounds from the surgery itself ( from the IVs's).
  17. Hi everyone, I just wanted to give you guys an update. I was sleeved on 6/18 and my weight was 246. My average before that was 255. First few days where very hard! By the end of the week was feeling great. Second week my head hunger was getting the best of me. I even cheated and ate 4 fries. I felt no restrictions and it did not make me sick. I was more ashamed of losing control than anything else. I have started WLS Group and I am hoping to start therapy to help with my food addiction. My incisions are hardly visible! They don't even have scabs on them anymore :s I never got nausea or vomited and have been able to eat whatever I put in my mouth. Well, 3 oz of it at least. Now am on pureed foods and that is going great. My favorite thing to eat is chicken breast from a can pureed with my husbands awesome salsa. For the 4th my family made me ribs in a crock pot so that the meat was tender. That was so good and satisfying. I continue to take all my Vitamins (Calcium 1500 mg a day, a multi, Iron, and b12 sub (all from Bariatric Advantage)) every day. I also take Carafate 4xs a day. I drink between 50-70 oz of Water every day. I know I am not dehydrated because my pee is light. Oh I also take something for acid reflex but not sure the name. I have no symptoms of acid rflx. I do not drink Protein drinks because my nut/case manger/surgeon said that it is not necessary but I am thinking I want to try some.. I have read a lot about Premier from costco, I think I will try those. SV (or scale victory): I now weigh 225 lbs NSV: I had to retire one ring finger because it fell off. My clothes are fitting too big My face is thinner and I no longer get sun glass imprints on my cheeks I don't think about food all day a lot energy My hubby cannot keep his hands off me... hehe! No longer take meds for diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol I can cross my legs when I sit My knees don't hurt when I sit down to use the bathroom (btw bm's are normal) My fears: tearing my sleeve not being successful at weight loss my food addiction What I am looking forward to: riding my bike... I want to do this so bad but I have not been cleared yet a new wardrobe running a marathon living longer going on a cruise and wearing short shorts! What I do to feel normal: I go to mc donalds every morning and order a decaf coffee I got to restaurants and stick to Soups If you guys have any questions, please ask! Thanks for reading. Veronica
  18. I am happy with the weight loss.
  19. Ok I know nothing about insurance, I'm 24 years old, and I never had medical insurance, I live in Houston, TX and I was looking into getting insurance that will cover lap band, I now weigh 268 lbs, and I've been overweight my whole life but this is the biggest I ever got, I need help and information, I'm getting so depress because I don't want to gain anymore weight.

Well, you need to check the requirements of the insurance. I have UPMC and they require a 6 month diet, fitness, etc. with no gain. If your insurance requires it, then it needs to be done to show you can change your lifestyle with the band and eat correctly and exercise. All of this has to be documented by a doctor or the surgical group. It is tough I know, but the 6 months do go by fast and if you need to show a loss, it usually is only a few pounds a month that is documented. You are going to change your lifestyle if you get the band so no better time to start than the 6 or 8 months before you get it.

Back trouble, will this help with insurance?

You need to get all the information you can, what BMI does your insurance require, what BMI are you at now? Do you have any other comorbities, diabetis, other problems from your weight? it is always worth a try, but you should be able to get the medical policy from your insurance and be able to tell from that if you have a shot at coverage. Good luck.

    Completely Devastated

I was devastated too when my insurance said NO to the sleeve but yes to RNY. I have a failed band right now and wanted to convert to the sleeve per my Dr. I never really wanted RNY but since they are still looking into the sleeve and won't pay for it now, I may have a long, long wait before they will reconsider paying for it. In my case, due to health reasons I'm considering by-pass. I am a low weight, so I am concerned. Will your insurance pay for RNY?

Rhonda, thanks so much for that info. I think I need to wait until I get a denial. Assuming that happens, I would definitely go for the peer to peer strategy. Would like to get the name of your surgeon, though. My sister is on ACCHS and is interested in WLS. ] Hi, AZ! My surgeon is Dr. Steven C. Simon, MD at Arizona Weight Loss Solutions. His no. is 480-419-2280. His office is located on Tatum Blvd, on the SW corner of the Desert Ridge Mall Entrance. He does his surgeries at Paradise Valley Hospital. Either way, I wish you and your sister the very best with getting your WLS needs met. I know Dr. Simon would be excellent at negotiating any needed support for treatment. Ronda

Back trouble, will this help with insurance?

It can't hurt to give the appeal process a shot. You're 15 pounds heavier. Your back is causing you problems. Have you been to an orthopedist? If not, go. After the evaluation ask if he/she thinks weight loss would help and if so, would he/she consider writing a letter to support your appeal process. And have a physical. With 15 more pounds, you might have other problems that are undiagnosed, like HBP and high cholesterol or even Type II Diabetes. Just cover all the bases. Some insurance requires a BMI of 40 or higher by itself or 35 and at least 2 co-morbities. So see if the 15 pounds and a year made a difference in anything. And follow up on the back problems.
