  1. Weeks 3-6 are common stall weeks. If you're still stalled after that, then look at switching things up.
  2. Every year our boys' PE hosts a Turkey Run and invites staff to run the mile. Never have I EVER even thought about walking it. Too embarrassed about how I looked, what would jiggle, how long it would take me, that I'd be huffing and puffing... you know all the reasons why. Today, I RAN with them. RAN!! Some of them were still faster, but I had to giggle at all the stragglers who would all of sudden find the energy to run when their librarian was coming up behind them! We were supposed to do 4 laps. I ran 6 and walked 2. So proud of myself. I never, ever thought I'd be a runner. EVER. I started a Couch to 5K app in July, and now I can run 40 consecutive minutes! I'm running 2.5 miles 3 days a week, and I'm signed up to run a 5k in February with the school's team.
  3. I travel at least a week a month. Will typically buy yogurt and hard boiled eggs for breakfasts as well as a case of water to keep in my hotel room. I will typically go to a Whole Foods or Sprouts and grab something for lunch, shredded chicken, salad with chicken, or other protein option I can find. I do lots of business dinners and have had great success just talking to the waiter/waitress about what I can eat and find most very accommodating. You just have to get comfortable with speaking up.
  4. Have you tried avoiding protein shakes all together? My surgeon doesn’t allow them. They want their patients getting protein from real food. I thought that was odd when I first heard about but after doing this for three months, it totally makes sense now.
  5. Couldn’t agree more with all the advice above. The goal is a future healthy life style. The first weeks weight loss is not a predictor of that. It’s hard in the first month or so to see the light, but if you work the process you’re going to succeed. We all seem to use the scale to measure success so I get it. I did the same thing and did experience the three week post op stall. I too was frustrated and concerned, but I held steady, it passed and I continued to see success. I’m three months out and have surpassed my original expectations.

    Hungry

Hello everyone! So my surgery is scheduled for 11/24 a week away! I am now on the clear liquid diet. I am struggling, especially when husband has to cook and eat something. I try not to let him know it bothers me. I usually go in the office or bedroom to get away from smell. How do yall get past this?? Any suggestions?? Stacy

    Contrave After Sleeve

I've not done this, but I do know Contrave affects cravings and reduces hunger. Given you are already only eating 800-1000 calories a day, I would question why this is even needed. Have you consulted with the nutritionists at your practice? Every place is different, but at mine, they expect me to be at 1200 calories at 6 months, maybe more if I am exercising seriously 5-6 times a week. Have you tried increasing your calories to see if that would help?
  8. I am 6 months post op from sleeve surgery. I've lost 73 pounds from my highest weight, but only 58 pounds since surgery. I'm eating 800-1000 calories a day, getting my protein and liquids, taking all my vitamins and exercising 5 or 6 days a week. The weight loss has stalled over the last 2 months, and I am so frustrated. I feel great physically, but am discouraged and disappointed. My primary care doctor spoke to me yesterday about trying Contrave. Have any of you tried it after surgery? What was your experience?

    November 2020 sleevers

I hit 299 lbs this morning after being stalled for 3 months. My body really didn't want to go below 300. I'm down over 110 lbs since surgery and still have a lot more to go but my doctor said my progress is normal and apparently I'm just more of a slow and steady loser so this should continue. Overall feeling great!

Hey lovely, I went to my doctor and asked them for WLS through the NHS and they were marvellous. There was no shame, embarrassment or judgement and he made me feel so comfortable and at ease throughout the appointment. And in my opinion, that’s the hardest bit. Taking the courage to ask and enquire. Once that’s over, you’re good to go 😄 I’m 16 weeks post op now and I feel amazing! Feel free to hit me up for any more info or support xx
  11. I’m a December bypass patient! December 17th pre-op evaluation December 29th surgery date and January 3rd is my 1 week review I’m excited and getting ready for my new lifestyle. Came here to get some supplements and connect with folks who understand the excitement I am feeling. Also the anxiousness and feelings of not being ready quite yet for what I need to get before going into the hospital.

    Gastric sleeve

I’m on day 10 post op. I had the sleeve too and I got the hunger feeling started yesterday but I noticed I didn’t have enough protein intake. I guess I have a mindset of 40-48g of protein but my dietitian advised me today that I can take more proteins. I was counting the bone broth as my protein intake which made me hungry a bit although I’m using the Paleo/Keto friendly broth with 10g of protein. I changed it today and I’m not hungry. Can’t wait for the soft/puréed stage next week. I started watching videos on YouTube and it’s interesting and I found them helpful for our next stage.

Did your doctor not give you a diet to follow? You really should be eating bland, liquid food right now. 9 weeks post op, there is really nothing at Christmas you should be eating other than mashed potatoes and some sugar free jello. Sent from my SM-N975U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Type of diet?

Some plans provide caloric goal, others portion size & some a combination of both. Mine was just portion size (1/4 cup to begin increasing to less than a cup at 6 months & goal) & low carb, low fat, low sugar & high protein. There were days all I ate was protein & nothing else to begin. I slowly added vegetables to one meal a day (about a tablespoon) & gradually increased the amount & added some fresh fruit as the weeks & months passed. In maintenance, I’m still careful about portion size, keep an eye on my calories, avoid processed foods & keep to lowish fats, lowish carbs (only complex whole & multi grain carbs) & low sugar. As most have said above, it is always best to follow your plan unless you can’t & then work out an alternative plan with your dietician. Also ask them for more direction & recommendations around calories, nutritional advice, etc. It’s important you feel comfortable & confident about your eating plan.

Exactly. In maintenance you discover what works for you & allows you to continue to maintain your weight & if that includes the occasional snack that’s fine. I keep macadamia nuts, roasted fava beans & nut squares in my cupboard - lowish fat, lowish carbs, about 100 calories & 3-7g protein. Mainly to have on hand if friends drop by for a drink or cup of tea but I do sometimes have a nibble. Fava beans last week, nuts a couple of weeks ago, nut squares … can’t remember.
  16. Hello All! I wanted to let you all know that I was hospitalized Friday 11/12 until late afternoon Saturday 11/13. I ended up in the ER early morning on Friday 11/12 with severe pain. All kinds of tests and a CT scan were done. The test results confirmed I’m diagnosed with Rectus Sheath Hematoma. (Rectus sheath hematomas result from bleeding inside the vascular rectus muscle layer of the abdominal wall.) My doctors say I will be in this pain anywhere from 2 to possibly 4 weeks. Tylenol and Tramadol are the medications to manage pain. I have to wear a binder and use a heating pad to help soothe the pain. Bed rest is all I can do right now. I can’t even stand for know more the 5 minutes at a time. My doctor said it’s a very tough setback and recovery to have rectus sheath hematoma cause of severity of the pain.
  17. I’m in San Antonio. Try South Texas Surgeons…. I was more than 30 bmi but it cost $9,900 and they sheduled me 2 weeks after initial consultation.
  18. Chicken. Yuk. my favourite meat now makes me want to vomit! Even watching other people eat it… im 16 weeks out and this has been a thing the last 3 weeks. Prior to that I was fine. steak, beef, lamb, pork and bacon are all fine. However i’m now not as interested in meat as I was before and simply eat it for protein. From the get-go I can not handle sweet stuff… no way. Even sweet drinks or protein shakes are a no no I’m also going off anything with flavour lol 😂 spices, garlic, herbs. I don’t like cream or heavy sauces. I am turning into one of those ‘fussy eater’ types I used to despise because I would eat everything! i just crave plain pasta with cheese.

    Type of diet?

As everyone said, there are as many different eating plans as there are surgeons. My doctor's plan was lowish-carb (not keto low, but controlled). It emphasized protein first, then veggies and not pushing my restriction. He said if I did that calories would take care of themselves and it did work out that way. I tracked (and still do) everything I eat so that I am aware of how many calories I am taking in and what the macros are. I actually also eat about 6 mini-meals per day rather than 3 "big" meals. But if eating that way isn't working for you, try the more traditional 3 meals per day approach. Low-fat has never worked for me as it leaves me hungry, but your body might react well to it. Different bodies thrive on different approaches. At 6 weeks out, you are still very early in the process. Ask your bariatric program what they recommend and then adjust as needed to accommodate your body's needs.

    Trying to sleep in pain!

After 1 week I can sleep comfortably on either side or my stomach. I’m 272 now. Surgery 11/9.

    Type of diet?

The answer is: Yes! All of the above. Low cal, low fat and low carb. At least low complex carbs (like bread, cake, rice, potatoes, pasta, etc.). Simple carbs, like vegetables and fruits are welcome. One suggestion: eat 3 "big" meals instead of 5 small meals. And by "big" I mean until you feel your stomach full. Then don't drink any fluids for an hour (I go up to two hours) and that will stave off the feeling of "hungry", because you're not flushing the food out of your stomach. The point is to fill your little stomach to capacity (not over!) and keep it full for as long as possible. If you eat small meals, you'll always feel hungry, and may end up eating 6, 7, 10.... small meals, which add up to more calories than 3 full meals. IMHO, at 6 weeks, you should be cleared for raw veggies and fruits, so have 3-4 oz of meat each meal, then fill up on salads and fruit. Then stop. No snacking in between meals, because you still feel full. Should shoot for 600-700 calories a day at this stage, all included.

    Week 6 - Down 20lbs PO, 42lbs Total

From the album: Post Op Progress - Sleeved 10/13/21

It's the beginning of Week 6! Starting soft foods today and out of a two week puree stage. I'm also down 20lbs post-op (lost over a full 5 week period). 42lbs down total from May 2021. This is the most weight I've lost all together (previous record was 37lbs). I'm giving myself a reward (a Disney bag) at 50lbs total. Looking forward to it.

Pants Size and Other Bariatric Sites

I'm not a woman (women's sizing was obviously invented by misogynists... absolutely terrible) but I will say that when my weight loss slows, it means I'm about to drop inches. One week I only lost 1.6 lbs (I tend to average about 3-5) and lost a full inch off my waist and hips. But even for men, sizing is "creative". My favorite jeans are one particular cut of Wrangler and they tend to run big, so I'm into a 36 in those, but if I buy the Cowboy Cut jeans, I'm a 40. Go figure. I've lost 56 lbs since surgery and in the same style jeans (Lucky 221s) sized down from a 40 to a 34.

    Type of diet?

My clinic's nutritionist was on board the low-cal train—and I actually stopped losing weight for a while because of it (not just the 3-week stall). It all came to a head (there's a post elsewhere on here about this) and I fired her. My new nutritionist has me on a balanced diet of proteins, carbs, and fats, based on my activity level (active). I intake 1000-1400 cals a day depending on actual activity level; most programs are far less. And I feel like all I do is eat and drink 🤣 I will say this: fats are essential for hormone regulation, ESPECIALLY for people for whom estrogen is the primary hormone.
