  1. Mine are way better too. And they never were bad until I got really overweight, in my late 20s. Then I got big cracks in them. I was also a new nurse at the time, standing on my feet for 12 hour shifts. I'm pretty sure I read a long time ago that it has something to do with the fat cushion in your heels wearing down from carrying too much weight. Sent from my Nokia 7.2 using BariatricPal mobile app
  2. You know, now that I think of it, my feet also have been lovely since losing the weight!

    anyone over 60?

Hi Elizabeth! I was sleeved a year ago at 67 and feel better than I have in many years. I had a smooth recovery and continual weight loss, although very slow at this point. Slow and steady wins the race (well, not in the Olympics). Good luck, and ask any questions!
  4. Can you share with me what your experience going from Sleeve to RNY has been like? I am trying the medical managed weight loss option right now but so far it’s not helping with the reflux. What are the biggest differences to you between the two procedures and how they affect your daily life? Thanks for sharing.
  5. I disagree on losing less weight 2nd time around. It may be harder but if you follow the rules you will lose the weight. Example I weighed 296 day of surgery VSG I lost 14 lbs first month. I weighed 180 day of surgery RNY I lost 12 lbs first month !!!!! There is 116 lbs difference in starting weight for those 2 surgeries and yet 2 lb difference in weight loss.

    Frustrated

Your weight mgmt. program will want you to be in good health prior to an elective surgery. Diabetes that is not well-controlled will lead to poor healing.
  7. like the lizonaplane said, the two-week (or however long the surgeon requires) pre-op mostly-liquid diet is to shrink your liver so it's easier for them to get under there to operate. in addition, some insurance companies require a 3-6 month professionally-supervised diet. I think this is to see if you are able to stick to a plan long term. I lost a ton of weight on mine, so if it was supposed to prove to them that I could lose weight without surgery, then I wouldn't have been approved. I do think it's to show you're committed and can stick to a plan.
  8. I've heard a few people who had the sleeve saying that they stopped losing weight early on. Sorry that you're going through that! I've had pretty slow weight loss myself when I compare myself to others due to my hypothyroidism and not being able to really exercise due to my back injuries and arthritis, but I was still recently able to get to my goal weight even after multiple really long stalls throughout my journey including the most recent one being 47 days long. If you look into revision, other than gastric bypass, you could also see if your insurance will cover the duodenal switch or loop duodenal switch surgery and if you can find a surgeon who will perform it. The sleeve is literally the first part of the surgery, they just add the intestinal bypass portion and you statistically lose the most weight with the DS. So it's an option to look into. I hope you can either find something that will work to pick your weight loss back up or a revision that'll work for you. I'm so sorry you're struggling and I hope that things work out for you.

    Scared to death!

I was incredibly hungry during all of weight loss phase. It was too early for what you ate, and that's concerning....because endangering yourself this early on is bad news for being able to make health protecting choices in the future. While probably not world ending (honestly cheese and refried beans were on my soft foods list)....it makes me think you need more support than you're getting. I know some people experience a tremendous decrease of appetite. I was not one of them. I was every bit as hungry as I'd ever been and more so.....so I totally feel your pain. Please be concious that you need to follow your instructions carefully so you don't injure yourself. Causing a leak in your stomach suture line will result in a hell of a long hospitalization, and VERY serious potential problems. You don't want to go there. You don't want to risk the smallest chance of it. It's that bad. I wouldn't be me...without plugging the bariatric therapist...so I'm gonna say you should see if your clinic will give you a referal. Lots of folks are resistant to this, but it's just not a bad idea. What could it hurt to give it a try?
  10. Hey all, I was sleeved a little over a year ago. alittle about me, surgery day I weighed in at 386. I’m 6’3” and prior to the sleeve I was in the gym 5 days a week most weeks. I’ve been the same weight since 5 months post op, currently weighed in at 315.No matter what I do, more intense workout, sleeve reset, eating more protein, more water, more greens. ( all those were doctor suggestions). Nothing seems to work, kinda like before I even had surgery. Even got to the point where both the surgeons nurse practitioner has said quote “ I don’t have any answers for you”. The surgeon suggest the sleeve reset because he said I had to be over eating. Which I don’t. I eat like a bird most days i got a second opinion 2 months ago and she put me on a 1600 calorie diet, she thought I was under eating and I struggle to eat 1600 calories. my worst fear was when getting the surgery was it wouldn’t be effective and I understand that I’ve lost like 70lbs. That’s all fine and grand I feel better but I’m only 10 lbs from my lowest weight I achieved on my own and that is extremely disappointing to me. I was told by the surgeon prior to surgery that the weight would melt because I was already active quite a bit. I’ve contemplated getting it revised to the bypass but with the slim success of the sleeve I’m quite reluctant to go get another procedure. im really getting to the point of not caring anymore. The doctors all say my labs are good, no thyroid problems or anything like that. im at a loss, this was supposed to be a nice tool to use to change my life and it just seems like it broke early. thanks for reading and letting me vent Matt

    Lost

I would definitely make sure your hematologist becomes a part of your surgical team to ensure your safety and prevent clotting issues. He can provide guidance to you and your WLD team. My husband has Factor 5 Leiden which was diagnosed after he developed extensive bilateral pulmonary emboli (blood clots in his lungs), found he had bilateral clots in both legs (no symptoms at all) while in hospital recovering from a heart attack. I insisted on a hematology consult because he was receiving heparin shots twice daily and was on daily aspirin and Brilinta (given after cardiac stent placement to keep platelets from clogging the new stent causing another heart attack) and should not have been making clots! Hematologist did the necessary tests and found the factor 5 Leiden. It’s an inherited disorder so now his mom’s death made more sense…she died due to extensive bilateral pulmonary emboli. We had our son tested and he has it as well. So far, he’s had no clotting issues we know of. However, he definitely needs to lose weight and will need weight loss surgery, I’m sure. I’m concerned about how he will do as well. My husband takes Eliquis twice daily and does quite well. He does not do well with heparin…drops his platelet count AND still developed DVT/blood clot in his leg! After my DS I received heparin injections twice daily but was discharged home on low dose Eliquis twice daily for two weeks. Sorry for the long post! Best wishes to you!
  12. After having a lap band for 13 years with not so great success, roller coaster weight loss, and the inability to eat certain foods at all, I am having it removed in the future and wanted some I put as to getting the gastric sleeve while they take it out. Anyone else switch and have any insight or advice as to good move or not? I’m 68 and in relatively good health.
  13. That’s amazing. I actually had the same issue but I considered it a great success because I went from 323 to 180. At one point, due to barely eating and exercising like crazy I got down to 160 but I was ill. Nonetheless, I’m guessing I’m back up around 215 now at this point postpartum and basically wanna lose another hundred pounds. I’m going to go all the way but I hear stories about people only dropping 30 pounds on their second surgery and I don’t think it’s worth it These questions are really helpful. Thank you. Your case, it sounds like it was perfect! Congratulations! But you know what I had the same fears the first time I had surgery – and I would be the one that didn’t lose the weight and it wasn’t true. I need to lose 70 to 90 pounds at this point and my concern is not the rate of speed but whether or not it’s worth going through a life-changing surgery the results may only be a third of what I’m looking for

    Waiting period question

I am in Wisconsin and in badgercare as well. I believe you have to be in a weight management program for at least 6 months. Where in Wisconsin are you from/ where would you go for surgery? I started the process through SSM Health Weight Management in November and will be having my surgery August 20. Sent from my SM-G770U1 using BariatricPal mobile app
  15. My thighs don't rub together when I walk anymore and this has never happened to me, even when I weighed my lowest adult weight of 150. I'm 225 right now. I don't understand why they're not rubbing together. Maybe because of the loose skin they have kind of fallen down? Lol. I don't know, but I'm not complaining! R.I.P. Boobs

Hm. I know this is from a while back but I wonder what will happen to me. I had a breast reduction in 2003. I was a 40 band size then and the cup size was a K.. I got down to a DD after the reduction, which was great. I had my son in 2010 and they grew back to a K. Now, they did a lift with the reduction so even though they grew back they don't look really saggy. Now that I have lost all this weight, the cup size has remained the same. I was a 48K (U.S, 48H U.K.) and now I'm a 38K (or 38H in U.K. Sizing). I still want to lose at least 35 pounds, and hopefully more. I wouldn't mind if the cup size went down. I am sick of having to pay so much for bras. Sent from my Nokia 7.2 using BariatricPal mobile app
  17. I'm am so sorry you are dealing with this. While i'm only a week out from surgery i stayed in the hospital till today because my nausea and vomiting were so severe. I would think of certain foods and throw up. Food aversion is terrible. My Doctor kept me because throwing up severely isn't normal. Did your doctor prescribe nausea meds? Mine work slightly and reduce my vomiting and retching by about 50% so i can stomach somethings. Also, 70lbs is a lot not sure what your starting weight was but still that's a lot of weight if you are at a lower bmi. My suggestion if you are getting any where with your doctor, go to the hospital you could have a stricture or something going on.

    Driver's License

My DL expires in April next year, hopefully I can give them a lower weight 😂 I actually think the weight reflects what I was 9 years ago (180..I had done a WL program where I got down to 167…then went back up over the years…pre-surgery I was at 245. My actual *highest* is 270; 20 years ago. …so my goal is to be my drivers license weight in 2 months 🤣🤣

    What Led To Revision

I was revised from the sleeve to bypass last Thursday due to severe GERD and a hiatal hernia. Within about a month or two of being sleeved, I began developing reflux. It took almost 2 years to consult with a specialist who confirmed that I had developed GERD (and over time the hiatal hernia) due to the sleeve surgery. Please be your best advocate and speak up if you feel something isn't right. I took very potent PPI's for almost 3 years and that led to damage to my esophagus. I feel so much better already, and I am losing weight as well!
  20. Wow I got my lap band in 2008 also. Just starting the revision process. Am prepared to self pay but hoping my insurance will cover surgery. My weight loss center staff is very good with working with insurance companies. Keeping my fingers crossed and doing a lot of praying.

    Sleeve Chat Room

Hi @DeneeD-this thread is really old and might not get much notice! I’d suggest starting a new thread. I’m just about two years out. Starting weight 286, now 140. This surgery has been life changing for me. My recovery was pretty easy. Expect the first 2-3 days to be rough, and then every day after that to get better and better. Follow the guidelines your team gives you. Be kind to yourself, practice healthy self care and be patient! Reach out for support when you need it, there is a wealth of knowledge here. Start exercising in whatever manner you can tolerate as early as you can and keep it up! I now hike, run, kayak, bike, attend kickboxing classes, and love it all. Keep track of non-scale victories to motivate when the scale is being stubborn. Track your intake vigilantly! Remember that you didn’t put on the weight overnight and you won’t lose it overnight either.

    What fears did you have?

I am three months out from gastric bypass (April 14). I had no problems drinking water right afterwards, nor was there any throwing up. The hospital supplies the meals so no broth is necessary to bring there. I was able to walk and use the bathroom within the day. I stayed one night. The first week at home is a little rough as you simply don't realize how much you use your abdominal muscles for just sitting up or down. I slept a lot the first few days. I tried my best to not use very much of the pain meds as sadly, addiction can occur even with less strong ones. I didn't pick up any grandchildren for about two-three weeks. But overall, I feel really good. I began exercising where I could (beginning in May) so for the first month and a half I just made it a point to walk for 15 minutes every day. The next month (June) I upped it to one mile. I used the 99 Walks app which for some reason I find quite motivating. For July I went for a mile and a half and I hit my goal a few days ago. For August I'm planning to walk 1 1/2 miles every day for a total of 46.5 miles. Then in September I'm going for 2 miles per day. In addition to the walking, I;m going to a YMCA class two days a week. It has been so very long since I worked out at all that my muscles are very weak so as I stated, I started where I could and be successful. I have learned that this surgery is truly not a sprint but a marathon. It comes with a steep learning curve. But I'm very grateful that now I don't just tell my body I'm going on a diet (and quit a few weeks or days in). With the surgery, now my body tells me "You've eaten enough now" or "Want to find out who is boss now? Swallow something high sugar and I'll quickly let you know exactly how I feel about that! Remember your days of 'toilet hugging drunk'? I can show you what 'toilet hugging intestine problems' too!" I'm currently 60 pounds down and I feel so much better! The doctor took me off insulin (think four shots a day) the following morning as well as Atorvastatin. As my weight comes down, I'm planning to get off high blood pressure medications too. It's a little weird, but very worth it all!

    My before and after.

Ok ready to post my final before and after photos. Before is around 350lbs, 3 or 4xl shirt. My highest ever confirmed weight was 356 and this was very close to that date in 2014. The other is today, wearing a size medium shirt. Surgery was June 12, 2020, weight 334lbs, 6’4” BMI 40. I hit this weight (193) about 10 months post op and have been maintaining fairly evenly since (up a couple down a couple etc). For anyone on the fence about surgery, do your research but don’t let the scary stories you read here overwhelm you or give you a false sense of their frequency. Yes, bad things can and do happen in any endeavor. No one has a crystal ball, but the statistics of health issues from being obese and the statistics of coming through gastric surgery safely and enjoying positive results speak for themselves. I never dreamed I would feel this good again. I didn’t even think I was that fat…. Just a “big guy.” Looking back at old photos I’m mortified. Looking forward I’m so optimistic and full of life and joy. I feel like this is the “me” that has always been in there, hiding, hoping, waiting to come out. What “you” do you have inside longing to come out and face the world?
  24. I have this scale and LOVE it: https://getfittrack.com/products/fittrack-smart-body-bmi-scale 100% bluetooth, syncs right to the app. It has a ton of helpful stats and info. I use the Baritastic app, which has been an adjustment after being a long time MyFitnessPal user, but I love that it connects directly to my surgeon's office. I also log my weight and measurements in there. I also use the Monitor Your Weight app to track weights and measurements. I like it for all the data and graphs it provides. This is an extra, Baritsastic essentially does the same thing, I just like the additional level of detail this app provides. I have a FitBit Versa 2 that syncs with Baritastic, which is super handy. I also have a Cubii Pro, that syncs with my FitBit. I have yet to find a single app that does it all, but I don't really mind having multiple apps. If you're going for simplicity, I would say the scale and Baritastic are probably all you really need. Congrats on your surgery date! I'm sure you'll do great!

WHERE ARE MY AUGUST 2021 PEEPS?

Good for you! Just the thought of being healthy is keeping me on track. I have so many comorbidities and I'm hoping to get off my medicine, or even decrease my dosage. I've been unhealthy so long that I'm not comfortable in my own skin. Hopefully, when the weight comes off and I feel physically better, I can get into trying new things.
