Hi Kiwi, Rolesville... about 10 miles north of Raleigh. I am sooo ready. Started researching this about 2 years ago but only did something about it in January.
  3. Unfortunately, i dont think i am. I am getting better but i am definitely nowhere near 64 fluid ounces and 60-80grams of protein daily:( Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App Is it a hunger growl? Are you satisfied/full when you eat? Increasing fluids is hard but it helps with healing and weight loss. Do your best to try to get your fluids up. Try different fluids. I like the crystal light fruit punch. Also no sugar added hot chocolate. I add it to 10-12oz instead of the 6oz of Water the box calls for. It helps put me at my fluids goal. Somethings i can drink quickly others not so much. How much protein are you able to get? Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using the BariatricPal App
  4. good I'm glad to know and even at 1000/1200 are u still loosing? HW 289 CW 230 bypass 11/22/16 yes - but very slowly. But I'm also 19 months out. I don't think I went over 1000 until I was almost a year out. I remember being at around 800 for several months, then 800-1000 from about six months to a year out.

    Completely Undecided.

I chose the sleeve, which was also what my surgeon felt was my best option. I'm peri-menopausal and I've had severe anemia in the past, so I didn't want to have the malabsorption that RnY creates, since I'm in dire need of Calcium because of my age and Iron because of my medical history. My BMI was 40.5 and my only co-morbidities were hypertension and sleep apnea. I've always been very active, so I wanted the surgery that would give me the best chance for weight loss with the least possibility of causing drastic changes in my ability to be active. I'm only a couple of months out of surgery, so I don't know yet if I made the right choice, but I feel good, I'm down 38 lbs since surgery and I feel the best I have in 10 years. Good luck in your decision, I struggled with it for months but finally made the decision and it was a relief to stop swinging between VSG and RnY.

  7. Healthy_Life2 is giving some really solid advice and feedback. I appreciate her comments. I am only 2 months out so can't comment on weight regain. I can say that I have made a complete 180 in my lifestyle choices. I am extremely diligent in following my post-op dietary plan. I track daily caloric intake using the MyFitnessPal App and then go over my macros in the evening to make sure I am on target. I wouldn't even call it a diet--because that's such a temporary thing. I am looking at this as a new lifestyle. I have deviated from the standard plan provided by my doctor (I did discuss it with him and my nutritionist) and I am following a very low carb keto style plan (although too high in protein intake to be a true keto diet). This type of lifestyle provides me with very clear guidelines of what I can and cannot eat--which makes choosing foods easy, I do track calories too and set a limit to how many calories I can consume in a day, but this isn't hard since I am usually very satisfied sticking to my plan. Even if my ability to eat more increases, I feel like I can make good choices that may increase the volume of food that I eat without causing me to over-consume. When they say the sleeve is only a tool, they do mean it. Losing weight post-op is still a lot of work and requires a lot of discipline. The big difference is you are no longer fighting against your high set point, so instead of heating a plateau and suffering terrible hunger and cravings, you don't have that set point fight against you. The volume restriction is also helpful, but as Healthy_Life2 said, you can eat more frequently and undermine this process. I also now get up early in the morning to hit the gym before work and I love that "me" time. Even though this new and still "exciting" for me, it's a lifestyle that I can be happy with for the long term. I do not miss sleeping in late or eating carb heavy foods. I hope I still feel this way 2 or 5 or 10 years from now, but I am definitely happy right now. I can say that you need to be mentally prepared to make major lifestyle changes after you have the surgery (before as well!!). You need to have a healthy lifestyle plan in place and be 100% committed to following it through after surgery. I think the people that commit to following a healthy lifestyle plan will be successful long term. The people that only follow the post-op plan "most of the time" and "only cheat a little" are probably not following the plan very much at all and are cheating a lot!! I have gone to a few support group meetings and there are so many people that show up that can't understand why the weight isn't coming off them, while their friends lost so much. After talking more, it turns out that, as a result of surgery, they cut down their portions of crappy processed fast foods and other junk foods, but they continue to eat the same crap they ate before surgery (just less of it). That's not how you get down to a 25 BMI!!! You have to use this opportunity not only to cut down on your portions, but change your food and lifestyle choices. The people that make these changes and stick to it don't seem to have issues with regain (other than the normal 5-10 pound fluctuations that should be expected).

Do you know how much your fills were? Also, what size band do you have? I have a 4 cc band with a total of 1.9 cc fills, and that puts me in a pretty good spot. My husband has a 10 cc band and has three fills totalling 7 cc, and he can still eat more than he should. Proper fills geared to each individual is what makes this thing work. Don't give up yet!

few questions from a new sleever...

Day 4 will start to look up...the first few days I measured 1 oz drinks, and took them every 5-10 minutes. I would wake up in the middle of the night and sit for an hour sipping...everyone is different, but just keep some liquids going.
  10. I am five days post op. Banded 12/10. I still have terrible gass pains= at least that is what I have decided this increadible tightness under my left breast area is. As soon as i take a sip of anything I am double over in pain. I have been out on errands and taken gas - x like there is no tomorrow and it still miserable. I really was under the assumption this surgery would be a walk in the park and I should be back to normal by now, but man do I still fell like crap and have to be at work tomorrow.
  11. I was sleeved last Monday 2/1/10 and went for my one week post op yesterday and had lost 22lbs.:biggrin0: Im a little concerned because I dont want to lose too fast and I am only on full liquids this week. DOes the weight loss slow down? and when?:001_unsure: Also today I am extremely nausous and wnat to know if anyone has any suggestions for improving that?? THanks, Lou:001_smile:

    Eating And Drinking Beverages?

You should not do the same thing for the same reasons with the sleeve...if you eat and drink at the same time, you will not get the nutrients that you need to get from food....plus if you drink and dont wait the 10-30 min you should before eatting you will not get the sense of "fullness" that you should get...this is what I was told by my NUT at my session....

    Eating And Drinking Beverages?

Go to the forum on one year surgiversary; Sleever drank a soda 6 months out; IT RUINED HER SLEEVE. in over a year she has only lost 39 lbs; the carbonation expanded her stomach. She kept drinking too. My advice; never drink soda again! I too was addicted to DIET COKE! Here is how I kicked it; Crystal light "ENERGY" It contains caffeine ; On 10 pre op: I started replacing one DC with this and drank less and less DC each day ; only on CL ENERGY A DAY. day 6 DC was too sweet. Day 7 till now NO DIET COKE! I don't even miss it like I thought I would.( and with no withdrawals ) Remember- these addiction and bad habits are just that BAD HABBITS. All other diets I have every seen say; NO soda, bread, bad carbs, or sweets This is the same way no different; we have to change our brain HABBITS and our hand to mouth; and exercise HABBITS . Please don't go through this surgery without committing to change for life. And. EAT TO LIVE; not live to eat! Trust me this is the hardest thing I will ever do!
  14. Some of dh's family has been here and so we have been going to do a bunch of tourist type stuff here in Houston. Anyhow, I don't know if its been the stress, the fun, the spending, the lounging, but I have been eating with wreckless abandon. Thousands of calories a day for like a week. I'm scared to get on the scale. So I haven't. Today, as we left the house for another excursion I grabbed my size 22 capris (that are stretched more to a 24 at this point) and they pooched. (pooched= when your jeans zip up but your stomach pushes out so much so that the zipper may go at any moment.) I have a few larger-than-necessary shirts for working out or sleeping, (cotton size 4x shirts), that I was forced to dig into to wear tonight. I didn't have time to break down standing in my closet and admit that 95% of it isn't gonna fit. I know now without stepping on the scale that I am at my all time high weight, probably over 280.. in other words, more than when I was the day I went into the hospital to have my dd a couple years ago. I scanned through the digital camera and saw further evidence. I was shocked to see how huge I have become in photographs. The shape of my face stretched out- my neck is starting to disappear. (I'll post a couple of the pics on here when I have the chance because there's absolutely no way I'm posting them anywhere else.) Ahmmmmmm...... Please let surgery happen soon. I think I might go do the the nutritionist mtg & psych eval anyway. Dh doesn't want me getting my hopes up for it to happen anytime soon. I get irate in my head when he says that. Feels like he's telling me no and since I've already got a father I don't want my dh telling me no. (Can you tell I'm still throwing an internal tantrum?) Sounds ridiculous even when I type it. Somethings gotta happen soon or 'oh my' I'll have nothing to wear out of my house!

    Day 35: Life of Sleevey

Thanks for sharing crosswind. It is good to hear-I am only 6 days post op and I called my surgeon today to ask him if the damn sleeve worked because I am able to eat like 6 oz of fat free cream soup in like 10 minutes. He told me that once I graduate to solids, it will be different..the food makes you full very fast. Your posting also helped clarify for me...thank you!
  16. I am 7 months post-sleeve and for the past 2 weeks, I've had issues with my vision. I've always had fantastic vision and only used light Rx glasses for when my eyes get tired from working on the computer. I'm talking 20/10 vision. Suddenly every day my vision is getting worse. Up close and far away. Everything is blurry, I'm having to squint as I drive and as I type. So... I went to an optometrist over the weekend, thinking, maybe I'm just getting older and these years of working on the computer are catching up with me. The doctor did his tests and said my vision had definitely gotten "worse" since my last visit (about 2 years ago). My left eye is 20/20 with a little help and my right is 20/40. He decided to dilate my eyes and noticed a "freckle" on my retina on my right eye that wasn't there before. That was the one and only thing he could find that was off, he told me that I need to see an Ophthalmologist for further testing because he "has no idea what's going on" VERY REASSURING lol. He also informed me that my new glasses won't fix whatever underlying cause is making my vision so bad so quickly. I have an appointment next Tuesday to see the Ophthalmologist...so we'll see what is really going on. Just wondering if anyone had anything similar happen with their eyes and what the cause was. It could be completely unrelated to the surgery...so I'm just curious Hope you're all doing fabulous!!!!

    November 10 date!!!!

I started mine on 10/1. My surgery date is 10/21 so I was 3 weeks too. I thought 3 weeks was going to be awful - the first day was the hardest but the first day was also the most eye opening. I realized just how much I ate for no reason. When fixing the kids' breakfast and their lunch I would just put food in my mouth. Then I would eat my own. I would snack during the day then cook dinner and pick while I was cooking, then eat, then pick at the kids' lefts overs then pick while I was cleaning up. It was so eye opening for me. I am 15 days in now and I have struggled and I have had urges to just break down and eat but I have not. You can get through the 3 weeks and it goes by faster than you know. Good luck on everything for you.

I belong to the Slipped Band club

I just had revision surgery a month ago too - fixed a hernia too - and removed the gall bladder. That was BRUTAL!! But, I am not doing any lifting yet -I was told to wait a little longer. Maybe because I just had a tummy tuck too with muscle restriction. I do however feel fantastic so far with no more reflux. I get filled on Thursday and will report back if there is a change. Some bad news though - gained some weight - maybe as much as 10 pounds!!! (afraid to look) Let me know what you find out :glare:
  19. I think I lost 10 pounds during my 22 day pre-op liquid diet. I must have really missed the boat on the 14 pounds a week think.

10 pounds down and I screwed up today. I took the kids to Friendly's for dinner and was going to have a salad and diet coke. Well, I just lost it when I saw the menu and ordered buffalo chicken fingers and a BLT and proceeded to eat it. I don't know why- I was wracked with guilt and actually felt very sick by the end. That was an hour ago and I've had diarreah 4 times since. Yuck and now of course the negative self talk keeps happening. I will NOT screw up the next few days of this liquid thing. I just don't know why I choose to set myself up to fail. this is something I struggle with. do I not deserve to lose the weight? why not? I do deserve it and sometimes we make mistakes. I told my thin sister and she told me to stop feeling sorry for myself and move on. She said she overeats too sometimes but the difference is that she doesn't beat herself up and think she's a bad person like me...... why can't I just be normal?
  21. Hi All, I am Renee' from Washington state. I am a wife to a wonderful man (together for 17 memorable years), mother to 2 fantastic children, one beautiful daughter (who has given me 2 beautiful precious granddaughters and a wonderful son-in-law) and a handsome fun loving son. I think my weight story starts in my memory when I was about 10-11 and in 4th grade. I really was not extremly overweight just "chubby". I now do not even think I was that chubby but the teasing from the other kids assured me I was. Once I hit teenage years, I started dieting and got quite thin. I had my daughter at the tender age of 16 and after birth started the "Jane Fonda" craze. It was easy becasue at 16 and 17 you have all that energy anyways. I even got thinner then before pregnancy. At the age of 24-25 the weight started creeping up slow at first, then I was in a car accident that messed up my back and neck and the weight really started to pack on due to the lack of phyiscal excercise (which I really needed to lose and keep it off). I remember when I hit about 200 lbs, I was looking at my knees and I thought something was wrong with them because they looked different, not really realizing it was because they were fatter. From that point on, I think I blocked out my weight gains, even though I have weighed myself every week now for 26 years and have kept a weight diary just as long. I had joined Nutrisystem when I was about 27 and was able to lose about 35 lbs at that time. I joined a TOPS group about 1999 and got down to 246 at the time I stopped going. What a wonderful group of people. I have joined Weightwatchers at least 3 times, all with some degree of success, only to stop going due to finances or other reasons and gain it all back and then some. In 2003 I really started looking into weight loss surgery. I even attended a couple of seminars put on by the surgeons only to find out my insurance did not cover it. In August 2008 I weighed in at my highest weight ever, 305lbs, an extreme amount on a 5'4" frame. At this point my knees were so bad I was heading for a wheelchair fast. I learned in 2005 that I have Degenerative Joint disease in both knees and also arthritis in both knees. In October 2007 I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes. My father died at the age of 39 (when I was 12) from a heart attack. He was extremly obese as well. Being a long haul truck driver did not help his weight. All of these aliments and all the odds against me and having such a wonderful family, I finally got serious about doing something about my morbid obesity. Wow what a hard word to say about yourself, morbid obese, morbid meaning death. When the realization came, it hit me like a ton of bricks. I was way too young to keep on living this way and my family watching me suffer, how unfair to them. In April of 2008 I started the battle with my insurance. Even with all my co-morbitities and several doctor recommedations and appeals, I lost. Talk about a punch in the stomach, it hurt hard and deep. It also did something else, it made me so determined to find a way to get surgery, that I was like a freight train with a vengeance! My husband attended yet another seminar with me that my surgeon Dr. Lee Trotter was putting on, this was in early September 2008. Out of all the seminars that I had gone to, this one was "the one", the one that really insipred me, informed me and gave me the strenghth to pursue a Bariatric Surgery. It was at this that I learned about the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy. I had heard and read up to this point about RYN and the band. I was leaning towards the band until this seminar. After I got home, I researched the VSG and at first thought I must say I was like no way, I am not removing a good portion of my stomach! The more I researched though, being that I would have to self-pay, the band would have extra costs for fills and possible slippage (which would be extra cost which I do not have), and the RYN was way more extreme (and more costly) then I wanted to go. At the seminar the surgeon handed out the paperwork if you were interested in WLS you had to go out and get several tests. Within 2 weeks and the hard work of me and my husband we got the finance part figured out and I got all the tests that were required. I made my appoinment with Dr. Trotter. At the first appointmnt we discussed the different surgeries. I shared with him my research and felt that the VSG would be best for me, he agreed. I was able to make my sugery date for 2 weeks later on October 20th, 2008, a date I will never forget! The day of surgery I was at 292, down 13 pounds since my high at the end of August. I remember being so at peace, I knew this was for me. My surgery went well and I went home after about 28 hours. My surgery cost me 17,000.00 which included 1 year monthly followups with Dr. Trotter, labs done every 3 months and a BIA (Bio-electrical Impedance Analysis) at each visit. My experience from start until now has been phenomenal and I would do it all over again in a heartbeat! Within 3 months of surgery I was off of all my diabetes medication. I am still currently on Hypertension meds but only a half a tablet a day now. I can now walk more then a mile at at a time which I could not do for so long! To date (8/1/09) I have lost 93 pounds since surgery (just 9 months) and 106 lbs (less then 1 year!) since my high last August 25th, 2008! I am like a whole new person which and I am so thankful to have met Dr.Trotter and for his tremendous talent, experience and compassion, he helped me get my life back! My family is so supportive and I am so glad I am here for them and they for me. I wish each and every one of you reading this, the best whether you have had surgery or seeking surgery! Dont give up, you are worth it! Renee'

    Confused About Carbs

From the point of 10 days before my surgery and even now 10 days after, my dietician gave a 4 cup/day guideline of milk allowance. I use an excellent, pre-mix Protein drink called EAS - Carb control. I get it at Sams Club by the case for around $30. 17 grams of Carbs and less than 1 sugar. Good luck to you next week!!
  23. @@Stevehud Wow, 10-15g of carbs a day is extraordinarily low. The bariatric paper referenced above indicates (CHO = Carbohydrates): "Clinically, it has been proven that a low intake of carbohydrates may cause some damage to the human body. A severe restriction of CHO (in diets of about 15g of CHO per day) may lead to an increase in low-density lipoprotein (LDL), following the increased consumption of foods rich in fat and low in nutritional value, thus raising the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Furthermore, diets rich in fatty foods can induce a state of insulin resistance. Over time, these diets may cause acute ketonemia, which can lead to metabolic acidity. Additionally, the specific recommendation of a high-Protein intake and totally eliminating CHO from the diet has serious consequences to patients’ health, such as Vitamin and mineral deficiencies and ketosis, which can lead to cognitive alteration and an increased glomerular filtration rate. Furthermore, long-term effects can include nephrolithiasis and osteoporosis." I would be very cautious about such incredibly low carb diets for any extended length of time.
