Maintenance is not what I expected.

@@MelissaKSea I'm sorry to hear you are struggling. I understand the frustration. With your band empty does this feel like loosing weight as if you had not had WLS? I wish I had some good advice. At four years out I'm sure you have read about band to sleeve revision. Finances and risk another surgery may be an issue

    Sleeve Vs. Bypass

I have posted how I came about my decision before, and since I am lazy, I will copy paste..... I went in wanting the sleeve. My surgeon asked me what my expectations were, and what my main concerns were. Each of my smaller concerns she would stop me and say... either will do that. Then I asked the big one... When I am old, which one would be better. When I am 70-80, or in a nursing home, or if I am in a horrible accident, if I needed a full time feeding tube to help keep me alive, which one would work, and which one would be a huge problem, and she said.. Get the bypass if you are concerned with 50 years from today. Feeding tubes are easy to insert in the stomach that is left inside. With a sleeve, theres nothing to put it in other than the sleeve or intestine, and quality of life would dimish. Diabetes runs in the family. I don't have it now, but I don't want it later. RNY can do that for me. She also said that in HER practice, 20% of the RNY she performs, are a revision from sleeve. She said that in her patients with sleeve, many show that after 3 years, they no longer feel ANY restriction at all... and that they are regaining weight. Long-term, she has seen much better maintenance with the bypass.
  3. REVISION (pre)- the nurse for K.Hollis required I be on a liquid diet for 1 week for insurance purposes. I gained 2.6lbs after they unfilled me. I do need to call the insurance myself you know GO OVER HER HOMEWORK TO SEE IF office is jackin w me or is this FA real.i started out w/ A lap-band @ 220.. Then kept looking for easy food to eat cause of all the vomiting issues 5years later I weighed 231.? And now on 4th day liquids and I'm 225.4 at wt in 4days ago I was 228 and the receptionist read aloud the notes they wanted me down to 220lbs before they submit to my insurance PHCS - ALLIED.. Anybody got those insurance? I just want a price what's my 20% gonna be either way if insurance don't do this for me. I'll pay for it cash. I was thinkin maybe this June If get an answer but it take 2-3 weeks after a submission the nurse said. Lookin maybe July sheeshhh idk.
  4. This is when I tell ppl to be very assertive in your care and your band. my story and I am going to make it short was where I started to have reflux. my PA and surgeon treated me for that by increasing prilosec and using Carafate and onesdastron(SP). but what I should have said since I have never had any trouble and at the point had lost 81 lbs. I was a compliant bander. but I should have insisted on a barium swallow. I didn't and on july 4th I was in severe pain . went to the surgeon and had a barium swallow which showed a little slippage but I had a lot of damage done to my esophagus which I have never healed from. my band is in place but any amount of fill causes my damage to flair up. now I have no fill and slowly gaining wt. and have to start all over with a revision. I love my band and treated it well. but I needed to know when to assert myself and this is your time. make sure everything is okay.
  5. I revised 3.5 years ago lost over 160# and have kept off 150 of em. My experience was band relied on restriction /pain...the sleeve less so. my sleeve is predictable calm and doesn't magically toss back "bad" foods. What it does is reduce hunger and capacity ...which combined with following bariatric guidelines achieves weight loss. The sleeve has been what the band promised but never delivered.

    Banded in 2009

I was banded in 2011 lost abt 75lbs but now gaining it back plus IMG acid reflux, hearburn. Its crazy. Licorice helps and sometimes I put a little baking soda in water and drink it down. Relief! But so much sodium. I discovered Slippery Elm tea works best very soothing. Anyway told my doctor he prescribed nexium but I don't want meds. Still I have an appt for an xray to see what's going on with the band. I'm hoping I'm OK but something's going on. I actslly don't want a revision. If they have to go back in I just want them to take it out. Do they do that, remove the band? What has to be the situation? Curious! Thanks!!

    Banded in 2009

Dear Banded, Don't be upset. I had the same exact same thing happen to me. Only I had my band in for 6 years..I found a Dr. and his office that really wanted to help me. I fought for what I wanted and got it. As of May 18th 2015 I got my revision with a better band. You have to fight for everything you want as far as this surgery. Don't be upset about you weight gain because that will help you get on step closer to a revision. Just please fight for what you want. If you live on Long Island perhaps I can really help you. Please e mail with any questions you have. @msannie720@aol.com. I will be glad to help. I know what you are going through and it's not fun. Just hang in there. Your revision will come,
  8. I tend to feel that reputable Mexican surgeons are just as competent as American ones and you save a ton of money by going there. That being said, I have heard good things about twilight surgery, but I haven't had any awful experiences with traditional anesthesia and I used an American surgeon who uses traditional anesthesia. Now...you can have procedures done on both your front and your back at the same time. A full body lift which is an abdominoplasty and a posterior body lift with the possibility of buttock augmentation can be done at the same time- they just flip you over mid surgery. I was flipped for two of my surgeries...one I had an abdominoplasty with lipo to my back, so there was a flip involved, and one I had a posterior body lift which was all my back, but a revision of my thigh lift which is all on the front. They just lift you up and toss you onto the other side like a slab of beef. So...yes you can have your back and front done in the same surgery and yes I agree that arbitrarily disregarding plastic surgery in Mexico is uneducated. As for twilight surgery, I don't have enough research to really give an educated opinion.

    Banded in 2009

Hello, here to introduce myself! I was banded in 2009 and had a very successful few years. Weight loss was quick and first, then slower, but steady. I got within 20lbs of goal. I loved my band! But about 3 years ago, I suddenly developed really severe GERD out of nowhere. Then started vomiting everything. Sometimes even Water. I found myself in the ER more than once. Scary. I've had a million upper GIs but they don't show a slip or any obvious reason for the sudden pain and discomfort. I have had a complete unfill for 2 years, now, but still sometimes have these symptoms (not as severe, but still uncomfortable). I've tried to keep the weight off but I'm slowing gaining again. Hard because the best foods for my health are the hardest to keep down. Over 2 years I've gained 25lbs back. Not awful, but the scale is heading in the wrong direction and it's frustrating, because I really do try. My surgeon is advocating for a revision to RNY but insurance isn't too excited. My BMI is 31 and no co-morbidity. The band is obnoxious but not actively killing me at the moment, so it isn't an "emergency". Despite everything, I refuse to be angry about this. I don't hate my band and I'm not sad I did it. But I do hope that they will officially retire the band surgery. It just does not seem like the safest long term option. I'd love to hear of anyone else has had a similar story, and if they found a positive resolution.
  10. Do your research. I was considering the band until I started to research more. I found out that my hospital is no longer even doing the lap band due to high failure rates. Seems like this is the going trend. I also talked to a few people I knew who had been banded. Both have had revisions and removed the band going with bypass instead. I'm glad I've done my research. I still am. Right now I'm in limbo waiting to go to my hospitals seminar. Lots of time to research....
  11. Acid reflux is usually the culprit that changes people from the sleeve to bypass. I know I was one of those and thank goodness I went that route. First, I have never had a single bout of reflux or Gerd since surgery. Second, I have seen so many people that end up taking the chance of going with band or sleeve and end up having to have a revision. The sleeve can cause people who have never had reflux to get it. I am glad my bariatric team educated my fully on this. I wanted to do this only once.

    BAND FREE! YES YES

@NewNewMe I was banded in 05 also. I also had a lot of damage from scar tissue, my surgeon couldn't even do the Sleeve revision at the same time as band removal. I am so thankful he was able to clear enough out, and that my stomach healed enough, that he was able to do the Sleeve. I hear that a lot of doctors wont do the lapband anymore... I am surprised that any still do knowing the complication rates.

    BAND FREE! YES YES

Congratulations! I had my revision on 4/30/15. Had a band since 11/5/05. I am so glad to be rid of that horrible thing! I see people here looking to get one and I want to scream "don't do it". I get why they want to. You think it is less invasive and reversible. But when my doc told me after surgery how bad my stomach looked from that band and how close I was to my stomach closing off. I was really shocked. I am so glad it is done! So far I love my sleeve!
  14. I did not have a drainage tube & I'm fine. Revised 5/27/15.
  15. Band removed & Sleeve done 5/27/15. Mind you I was first Banded in 2010 then Band replaced in 2014. I had success in the beginning with the Band, then the slips & not being able to tolerate food. Also the Band is not a FOREVER thing in which is not told in the beginning. I work in the medical field & 3 Nurses that had the Band for 7 plus years revised to sleeve & the Scar tissue from the band had started attaching to the Liver. My scar tissue wasn't bad at all being that I just had it replaced in 2014. I'm in the healing process but thanking GOD everyday that I not only maintained, but that I'm making it through day by day. Much success to each of you.

    Pro's & Con's of gastric sleeve surgery?

I aslo has a revision from band to sleeve. I wish I could have had it done all at once but I had the band removed in January (slipped after pregnancy) so much scar tissue had to do two surgeries. I can say I loved my band, I lost 100 pounds from that band but once it slipped that was it for me. I was sleeved 3/25 and I am down 30lbs. NOW it seems to me I lost weight faster with the band but that may just be in my mind. I am only 9 weeks out and I still have a long way to go. I had my band since 2008 and it did me well. So far I like the sleeve, it's new so I have nothing bad to say about it YET.

  20. In 1983 I had WLS. it failed miserably in that I lost no weight. I did not gain any either because not a day passed where I was not throwing up I lost hair got diagnosed with osteoarthritis etc. While i was able to carry 4 lovely chikdren to term weight loss seemed forever out of my reach. I have been 305 lbs for over 30+ years. Finally two years ago I persuaded my GP to refer me to the Bariatric program in Canada. I waited months to see the doctor only to be told some people never lose weight, he was just the first step and it would take another 3 years minimum for approval for a surgery date IF I GOT APPROVED. SO I started the process and started researching my prior surgery and revisions. Turns out only two doctors do the type of serious revision I needed. One via our healthcare plan at a hospital in Hamilton, Ontario with a 5-8 year waiting list and a self-pay in Montreal that charged min. of 25g with outpatient status. I turned to Mexico and out of all the coordinators I chose Bariatric Pal and I researched the holeee double hockeysticks out of the doctors recommended. You can see who I chose in my profile. What made the difference in my gruelling 4 1/2 hour surgery and my recovery? Not only my gifted medical team but the unwavering determination of Bariatric Pal Team not leaving my side. They spoke for me, fed me, contacted my loved ones, made sure I walked, ate and rested once I was discharged from the hospital and even waited at the airport to make sure I made my flight after a delay at the border. I haven't thrown up in a month. I am 25+ lbs down and loving this new gastric bypass life. I LOVE dr. Ponce de leon If you want to talk to me about going to Mexico. Hit me up. I will be happy to listen and answer any questions you may have.

  22. Im june 23. Band to bypass revision. Sooo excited but cant wait to get rid of this band so i can get a good nights sleep again. Reflux sucks
  23. I had my band in 2011 and lost 47 lbs but started having pain in my port and getting really bad acid reflux so they took most of the fluid out and I gained 30 lbs back. I had to do the 3 month diet, psych evaluation, & physical therapy all over again. I had my last nutrition appt April 10th & was finally approved for revision by Aetna May 22nd. ????

    "You will fail"....question

I don't dump over anything. I had a hardcore sugar addiction before my bypass revision and thus far I don't have cravings for sugar. I don't do a low carb diet so I do eat fruits so maybe that takes care of the sweet tooth I have. I never have cravings for cake or cookies or anything I was struggling with just a few months ago... Just my two cents.
  25. I think there is a dedicated section for sleeve to bypass revisions-- hope you connect with those knowledgeable folks! The most recently-active person with sleeve to bypass that I'm aware of is Band07. Best wishes & kudos for your tenacity in dealing with all that!
