Three Months Post Op Success
JupiterinVirgo replied to JupiterinVirgo's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Congratulations! I understand that not tracking seems to be working well for you, but how do you know whether or not you are getting enough Protein? Just curious. My surgeon suggests only 40-50 g of protein a day so it's really easy to get into that ballpark without obsessing over grams. A cup of yogurt, a handful of nuts, Collegen powder in a green smoothie or a cup of coffee and some cheese usually does the job. -
Lowcarb High Protein Pre-Op Diet :-/
Heatherr replied to Ready2Bthin's topic in Pre-op Diets and Questions
For me, I found it easier to stay on the diet if I ate things packed with flavor and foods that I loved. That way I didn't feel deprived. I would slice a pepperoncini open and put some feta cheese in it. Soooo good. I always have shrimp on hand and would pan cook some with garlic or cajun seasoning. Again, it's packed with flavor. I did the same with chicken and sometimes would make a dup out of greek yogurt for the chicken and shrimp. I kept food interesting, so I really didn't feel deprived. Omelets are a great way to feel like you're eating like a king without too many carbs. I make one with 3 egg whites, cheese, veggies and 1 piece of turkey bacon and it's soooo delicious, but under 200 calories. When I want pizza, I microwave some pepperoni pieces to render out the fat and make them crispy. Then a add a dollop of sauce and a slice from low fat string cheese and micrwave again. This make little pizza bits that are very low carb and cures the craving. you can do the same with salami. Microwave it until crisp and use a paper towel to soak up the rendered fat, then top with some provolone or eat as it. buffalo chicken dip.....shred some cooked chicken, add hot sauce or buffalo sauce, a little bit of ranch or blue cheese and cheddar. Bake until bubbly. I use celery sticks to scoop it. -
Any advice, encouragement or hope will be appreciated

The custards sound good. I'm not liking solid food very much. I'd rather eat yogurt or cottage cheese. I have a pumpkin pudding I like...1 can pumpkin, 1 can evaporated skim milk, 1 small box sugar-free butterscotch pudding and then cinnamon to taste. Just mix it up. I was going to try it with vanilla protein drink but haven't yet. -
Start the day with ice water and lots during the day ALSO, Greek Yogurt seems to really get me going. I am like you in the subhuman logs, husband taped my name on the plunger.

Part of me agrees with Susanne, but I must add that nobody knows what this is all about until it is over and done with. Everybody just wants to know what's it going to be like? The protein shakes ARE AWFUL. Stomach them as much as you can...let me tell you this recipe, it's the one I lived on bc it was the only one I couldn't taste the protein: 8 oz milk, 6 ice cubes, 1 scoop choc protein powder, 2 TBS Natural Peanut Butter. Blend up and drink. It's pretty good and it's the ONLY protein drink I'd drink. Just know that the protein drinks are only NECESSARY for the first month or so. When you move to real food you can eat protein bars and they are much better. I do have a feeling there is more to this story, though, than just drinking protein drinks. Just know that you WILL NOT be eating ever again like you do now. If you can't get beyond that, you may not be ready. It was something I was doubting, too, but I was MORE tired of being fat and unhealthy. I'm 4 weeks out and living on cheese, soft meats, and yogurt. I had a spell over the weekend that I ate carbs and it's over. I don't want to be fat any longer and I really found out I didn't miss the carbs, afterall. I ate them and it did nothing for me. Amazing coming from a carb addict. Search your soul and figure what you really want and be content with that decision.

BAHAHAHA! I am so silly! How is everyone? I know I've been quiet on here lately but I've been so busy at both jobs. When I get home I just want to work out and sleep! Confession time..... I don't like needles and yet I pick the surgery that requires needles. LOL Anyway yesterday I had my first fill and it was not bad at all. I didn't look just relaxed. I forgot there isn't alot of protein in full liquids.... So I brought some tomato soup and added a 1/2 of serving of plain greek yorgurt. For dinner me and Fun Boy had a greek yogurt. Beleive or not this keep fill until 830 this morning. Anyway I finally found my port on my own! It is funny how the little things bring me enjoy! God is good Thanks for reading.

It's easy...focus on meat and dairy for your protein. Tilapia fillets = 20 grams of protein Chicken breast = 30 grams of protein Salmon patties = 22 grams of protein 1 cup of cottage cheese = 24 grams of protein 1 cup of ground turkey = 32 grams of protein 1 cup of Greek yogurt = 15 grams of protein

I think you need a new doctor. I think the advice you're being given is dangerous and sets you up to overeat and stretch your sleeve. It also sets you up for low blood sugar, hunger, fatigue, and fainting...that can be downright dangerous if you have to drive and difficult to have a productive day. It's not teaching you to eat the right foods. It's not teaching you to consume sensible portions. It's not teaching you much of anything other than starvation. Re-educating yourself how to deal with food is essential to long term success. I just don't see how this is a sustainable "forever diet". And if it's not....how and what will you transition to when you haven't been given any skills? My clinic sets a goal of 1200 calories and 60+ grams of protein per day during weight loss phase. We can either eat three 400 calorie meals, or six 200 calorie meals...or any combination we'd like as long as net calories are 1200 per day. I personally prefer to do three tiny meals during the day, a bigger meal for dinner, and another tiny meal around 8pm (usually it's got a desert vibe, like fruit or cupcake yogurt, or a chocolate protein bar.) This is how my day usually works: 200 breakfast (oatmeal and coffee with protein shake for creamer/an egg and half a slice of whole grain toast/fruit and yogurt/etc) 200 lunch ( 3 ounces of pork chop or chicken breast with green beans/sweet potatoe with pecans and salad/BLT wrap/chef salad with hard boiled egg/homemade veggie soup and slice of homemade bread) 200 midday snack (protein muffin/half a cup of potato salad/veggie and hummus/etc) 400 dinner (Crab boil/steak salad with eggs and swiss/protien pasta with salad and homemade wholegrain bread/chicken stir fry/stuffed pepper/ vegetarian chili and cheese on a baked potato/etc) 200 after dinner snack (strawberries with chocolate sauce/watermellon/frozen grapes/cupcake yogurt/oatmeat with pecans and cherries/chocolate protein bar) I like a little sweet after dinner, and usually do this after I finish my 12,000 steps for the day...sort of my reward. I eat a lot of really satisfying delicious food. I'm getting an education about portions and making healthier choices. I'm eating a ton of fruits and veggies, lean proteins and complex carbs. I LOVE my diet. I feel better on it. Tons of energy. Exercise is a big part of my day, too...and I have the energy to enjoy doing it. Weight loss has been slow and steady:) Getting close to goal:)

I'm eating upwards of 6 times a day. I won't say 6 "meals" because folks tend to think "Plate full of food" when it's really not that way at all. I'll have a protein shake in the morning, most times I add frozen fruit to it I'll have a protein snack a few hours later, this could be one of Kay's Naturals, or some greek yogurt or other protein heavy snack I'll have something else protein heavy a few hours later Later in the day I'll have a sandwich or something, super high grain count breads, low/no fat cheese, lean meats I'll have another snack of some nature, typically fresh fruit or some oatmeal I have another shake later, I'm using Casein protein for muscle recovery overnight And I'm getting upwards of 128oz of water a day as well. Spend at least an hour in the gym each day on top of what I do all day for exercise. Been going fairly smoothly thus far.

Pouch Rules for Dummies - Found this to be interesting
Sweettoothless replied to shoregirl75's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Same. I emailed it and messengered it to myself and then took screenshots just to make sure I don't lose this info. Now just to make sure i am reading this right, this is info for after 6 months out? Is water loading ok on a smaller scale for <6months? And if you aren't taking a protein shake or protein milk in place of a meal, how the heck do you get the protein powder in during the early months? Especially since i am guilty of soft meals like low sugar yogurt or cottage cheese with pp mixed in as a nice meal (i am one week into month 3). -
Yikes! That's the toughest post op diet I have ever heard of. Usually the Mexican doctors are the toughest, but your doc has them beat by several weeks. You'll have to see how you feel after the surgery. I was supposed to be clear fluid 1 week, full liquid 2 more weeks and then mushies. I started drinking liquid yogurt in the second week because I could not handle the protein drinks and I was having dehydration and nutrition problems. In fact, my American bariatric follow up doctor was horrified that I was not moving on to food sooner. Everyone is different. Do your very best and listen to your body - you will be a little fragile for a few weeks after. Good luck!

Jello and yogurt yes. pudding only 4 oz/day. Tonight I ate 1 tbsp part skim ricotta with 1 tbsp pureed chicken mixed together. With some tomato sauce maybe 2 tsp worth and sprinkled some low fat mozzarella on top. I thought it was good. Ate 3/4 of it. Lots of tunafish/ chicken/ egg salad -

I am still taking my capsule... Now that I'm past having to crush pills. Agreed. Effexor is very bitter, I had to pour it over yogurt to offset the taste. -
For the hospital you just need a phone charger (I got an extra long one that was 10ft)......chapstick, comb or brush, tooth bush...but the hospital will supply that if you forget......maybe a pair of undies....I also brought PJs but that's not necessary.....but made me feel better when I changed into my own clothes..... For home have what ever liquids you plan to drink, Protein drinks, a couple of cans of creamed Soup, broth and maybe Greek yogurt, depending on what your diet will be for the first week......For the creamed soup when you open a can you won't be able to eat very much....put the rest in a ice tray and freeze it for later.....two ice cubes were the perfect serving size for me. Then when you're past the stage the ice cubes are great for seasoning chicken when you bake it. As far as what to expect at the hospital your doctor's office would be your best resource as everyone is a little different....if you have specific questions I'll do my best to answer them.

ISOPURE aka ISOPUKE
Rev Me Up! replied to Sunny702's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I may not be very popular in saying this, but I never was able to meet my Protein requirements during liquids for this reason. All protein liquids made me sick. I couldn't even smell them. I spent the first 2 weeks drinking full sugar gatorade (diluted), Water, iced tea (unsweetened), and some Soup broth - no protein. As soon as I was cleared for full liquids I started drinking liquid yogurt, kefir, and milk. I didn't really come close to my protein requirement until I was able to eat chicken and cottage cheeese, and even then it was a small amount. Really focus on your hydration right now - that is the most important thing. Get liquids in and then do your best with the protein. You might want to dilute the Isopure 50/50 with water and see if that helps. Don't worry about the weight, it will come off either way. -

I haven't been that tired, take chewable vitamins , I took my pain meds as needed, my sipping has slowed down bad on my part, I have not ran into any problems with yogurt or cottage cheese, the only 2 things I have tried so far I'm going to try egg tomorrow puréed with tiny bit of mayo ,
