    Marijuana

I live in Denver and do use mj recreationally. I waited for several weeks after surgery but my doctor and nut said it was fine. I DO get the munchies and am sad about that. It DOES settle my stomach when I'm nauseous. It has A LOT less calories than alcohol. So while I'm sure everyone is different, I won't be using mj regularly anymore after I move out of state next month. Not to say I won't occasionally partake, but the munchies are enough to deter me from being a regular user. Plus, it's illegal in Texas.

21 y/o guy never able to have alcohol again?

I’m a year and a half out. I used to drink whiskey and now even one drink is too much alcohol for me and I get a killer hangover. I started drinking wine, which I didn’t used to like that much, and one glass of wine every week or two is perfect. World’s cheapest date.

21 y/o guy never able to have alcohol again?

I'm 14 months out and can share a bottle of wine no problem and sometimes more of the share ends up in my glass. Since I don't drink as much, I've gravitated to finer Italian and French wines. You can MOST certainly drink post-op, in fact my surgical team warned several times that alcoholism is a real problem post-op. I've had nothing but red wine, except that one day I had two mimosas and slept all afternoon from the sugar crash and the bubbly made me drunk very quickly. Life post op is way different then the picture your doctor is painting but use the honeymoon period post op to your advantage. I"m down 125 pounds and no matter what will never let it come back on but I am certainly enjoying life to it's fullest right now just in smaller bites. I'd give up any alcohol in a heart beat to keep my weight off but right now I'm at a happy balance and within the same 2-4 pounds for the last three months.

    Drinking and the band

Wow Jack, I guess you have more than enough motivation to stay away from the booz. Personally, Pre-banding, a 12 pack of beer would last me about a month. I did not even consider myself a drinker. I just liked to have one after a hard day at work. I have not had any alcohol in the 2 weeks since banding. If I ever do have the hard stuff it is usually at large family gatherings. Then I might have a few scotches or maybe a white russian. I suppose the three or four times a year I usually partake in a few hard ones wont hurt me in the long run.?

    Drinking and the band

Finally, I have been looking for answers about drinking alcohol, and have found it! I am getting banded on the 19th and there are just a few things that i am worried about. One is not being able to drink. I'm a college student at LSU, and my friends and I like to go out to the bars and have a few drinks. And I know that in order to lose wight, you have to give up a few of the things that you enjoy, but a lot of the social scene around LSU involves alcohol and i enjoy having a drink or two. I was just wondering, how long after surgery are you advised to wait before you start drinking again?

    Drinking Lots of Alcohol

Aside from the alcohol lecture, which I'll spare.. Here's a better answer for you.. 3,000 calories should NOT be your daily intake. My starting weight was 333lbs, and according to a metabolism test my first doctor gave me, if I ate 3,200 calories or less a day I would lose weight. Well, it's wrong. It takes me eating 1,400-1,800 calories to lose 1lb a week. If I throw in some days of under 1,000 calories I'll lose 2lbs a week. So lets assume you drink 400c of alcohol a day (that's if you cut it in half!).. and you'll aim for 1,500 calories a day (more or less, depending on your doctors orders).. you have 1,100 calories to eat 3 nutritious meals. It can be done, but are you dedicated to doing it? The band isn't going to magically make you make good decisions. If you mix coke in something for just one drink, you're now down to 900 calories! What if you drink like you do now, you're alloting 100 calories per meal. That's not very realistic. And to humor the idea, you're not an alcoholic.. Many people find new 'treatments' to their obesity when they have WLS. Like Alcohol. So if you don't think you're an alcoholic now, you're very high risk to become one after being banded (or any other WLS).

    Drinking Lots of Alcohol

You, my friend, sound like a chronic alcoholic. You need AA. You may not want to hear it but that's what is necessary. No doc is going to band you until you get that addiction under control.

    Drinking Lots of Alcohol

I think it has more to do with the emotional side of the surgery. Reports say that most people who are not emotionally preparded for the surgery will do one of two things. Turn to alcohol or to over eat to ruin their success. I'm not a drinker, but after surgery I have realizrd I did have a eating disorder. It's not easy, it's a work in progress that I battle minute by minute On Discovery TV last Saturday this very thing was discussed. It was agreed by all Dr. that if a person drink over 1 to 2 drinks a day they would not do the surgery. Reason being there was something else going on emotionally, that needed to be fixed before the surgery.

    Sleeved And 21

I have the same alcohol tolerance as pre-op now. It just takes a little longer to work back up. Haha, I still party. Nothing has really changed. It only happens once a month or so anyway.

    Can't sleep!

So I've been an insomniac for decades and like 10 years back I went to the doctor and got a scrip for anti depressants and anti anxiety drugs, slept pretty good for a few years. Then it started again. Then he gave me a scrip for a sleep aid - which worked for about 6 months. Now I'm off EVERYTHING - and BTW - it is HELL ON EARTH coming off both Paxil AND Xanax reliance! Then WLS and a massive drop in weight. I slept pretty well for a few months afterward, even got off my CPAP after dropping 100+ pounds. Now I get 2 or 3 hours a night if I'm lucky. I started taking 3.5 ounces of red wine every evening for heart health and in hopes the slug of alcohol would help me sleep. It helped for a few nights - probably all in my head. I lay there and toss and turn and force myself to "rest" instead of getting up. If I get up and do something like read or watch TV I'll be up all night doing it. I've taken hot showers, take melatonin sub lingual. I have a heated mattress pad since I am now cold all the time since losing the weight. I am comfortable in bed, the room is very dark and quiet - I even wear ear plugs. OTC stuff may work for a week or so then stops. So anyone got any tips on how to sleep well?

    Drinking Lots of Alcohol

I know I am new here and it might not be my place but...... I honestly think you should seek help for your alcohol addiction... Then if needed consider lap band. To be honest the lap band just sounds like a way to make you feel better about drinking.

    Drinking Lots of Alcohol

I agree with the suggestion to talk to your banding doctor honestly about your alcohol consumption, and it's affect on being banded. I was told last week by the psych I'm seeing that when she had even a glass of wine, her weight loss stalled for 3 days(she is banded also). I have been stuck since May, and realized that's when I started having a couple of glasses of wine a week(well, along with other bad habits for weight loss). Not enough calories to be that big an issue, but I stopped a week ago, and I'm down 5 pounds this week. So, I have to think there is something to it.

    Drinking Lots of Alcohol

Some of you have looked into this too deeply. I drink because I like it! perhaps I am addicted now, if so, I do not care. Getting the band is too lose weight. There is nothing deeper than that into this. My question is purely function. Can I drink with the band? Not should I stop drinking because you all think I drink too much. Thanks to those who were kind enough to give me honest answers about drinking with the band. I will have the surgery soon. An alcoholic is anyone you don’t like who drinks more than you do. I am a drinker with writing problems. Always remember that I have taken more out of alcohol than alcohol has taken out of me. Alcoholism is the only disease that you can get yelled at for having. Alcohol is the anesthesia by which we endure the operation of life. When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading. I drink therefore I am. Alcohol is living proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy. Reality is an illusion created by a lack of alcohol. I can’t die until the government finds a safe place to bury my liver. Irish coffee is the perfect Breakfast because it contains all four adult food groups: fat, sugar, caffeine and alcohol. I’m not as think as you drunk I am. Not all chemicals are bad. Without chemicals such as hydrogen and oxygen, for example, there would be no way to make Water, a vital ingredient in beer. There are better things in l
  14. Hey everyone, I'm Angela. I'm a 31 year old nurse (You'd think I'd know better then to let this happen to me...). I've been overweight now for the last 12 years. Basically since I got married. The interesting part is that I lost the husband, but not the weight LOL. Too bad it didn't go WITH him. I'm 5'4'' and 250. My heaviest was 275, and about 4 months ago, I busted my ass at the gym, along with a diet (shake and whole foods plan) and got down to 221. I've since, gained it back. I had a consultation with Dr Paul Cirangle in San Francisco and it went well, I'm just not sold on the Band. It's invasive, it's surgery (although smaller then any other option out there), and it's "permanent". I feel like I should be able to succeed without the Band, however, obviously haven't up to this point. The one thing that Dr Cirangle said that resonanted most with me, was that the band helps you fill your stomach from the "top down" not the "bottom up". That made my analogical mind think "coffe pot percolating method", so its a "drip down" kinda picture. That made sense to me. I know I'm addicted to food, and unfortunately, unlike alcohol, drugs or even sex, you HAVE to have it to survive. So where that leaves me, I don't know. I'm an emotional eater and have portion control issues. Just thought I'd come here to see what I could find, and talk to some people who've been here too. Thanks, Angela

    A Sad Milestone

Just so I'm hearing this right, you are replacing one addiction with another addiction. So now is the best time to get your S*** together and stop with these unproductive behaviors. I wish you could see a therapist for help, that is highly advised. You said your BF doesn't know you had the surgery? How could he not know. How did you explain the incision scars to him? This is a great time to sit down with him and tell him what's going on and ask for his help in getting back on track. Eat protein, protein, protein, no alcohol, no carbs, lean low fat foods with some veggies. You can do this1 Make healthy eating your new addiction and focus on small portion size. Please keep us informed.

    Drinking Alcohol after VGS

I drink anything that isn't mixed with soda - wine, Margaritas, vodka cran. I am restricted mostly by lowered tolerance. Tread carefully when you reintroduce alcohol. Where it may used to take you four drinks to get drunk, it might now be one. I had my first drink (few sips of wine) about 30 days out, but it was New Years Eve. I'd wait as long as you can, but a minimum of that. For instance, I did NOT drink on Christmas because it was an uncomfortably "too soon" risk I wouldn't take. I now regularly enjoy a drink when I want one, which is really only about once every week or two for me. Not much. I'm about 4.5 months out, but its been that way for me since right around the 3 mo post-op point.

    Drinking Alcohol after VGS

"Hello! I am 20 months post-op. I have been maintaining for a 13 months. I can drink fluids just as I did pre-op. I get grief from other sleevers cause I drink sparkling Water all day long. It has not and will not stretch my sleeve" Sleeve of steel may be the exception- - surgeons and bariatric professionals have seen more failures than one individual who is able to break the rules and be successful. For the general population it is NOT recommended to push the limits and the rules . Even gastric bypasses are seen DAILY stretched by such behavior. No one is saying dont do it-- don't let it become a habit. Studies show that obesity is easily replaced with alcoholism or other addictive behavior- shopping and gambling as examples. Life is about moderation- obesity isn't because any of us practiced that very well--- the rules are like AA 12 step to keep you on track and not testing your limits.

Alcohol is a Transfer Addiction !!

Hi guys. Just came across this thread and wanted to say thank you for all the supportive words you've shared here. I'm currently on my way to quitting alcohol, so I really appreciate your help. Actually, I'd also be grateful if you shared more of your experience on giving up that ****.

Alcohol is a Transfer Addiction !!

I'm aware that my reply comes a little late, but thank you for sharing your story and shedding light on the dangers of transfer addiction. It takes a lot of courage to speak up about personal struggles, and I hope your journey towards recovery continues to be successful. However, dealing with addiction and withdrawal symptoms, such as described at https://sunlightrecovery.com/fatigued-after-alcohol-detox/, can be challenging. It’s important to understand that recovery is not a journey you have to go through alone. Seeking the help of experts in the field can greatly aid in the process of managing addiction and withdrawal symptoms, as well as starting a healthy lifestyle faster.

    Hashimoto's Thyroiditis

I too, am hypothyroid and was not a huge eater. I would eat 1200 a day, walk a mile a day, not drink any alcohol and was only able to maintain being morbidly obese. If I went down to 500 calories a day, starving myself, I could lose weight. That is an unrealistic plan for anyone. My nickname was Olive Oyl as a little girl, so weight was never an issue until the last 10 years. This surgery has given me a chance to regain me. I am 9 days out, from surgery, and down 12.5 pounds. Does it work?? You betcha!!! Thyroid or not.

  23. Jessica, have you talked to your psychologist about this? Have you thought about getting counselling to work through the issues you are experiencing? Sadly the statistics are not good as far as 'transferance addictions' and VSG. Some people can turn to alcohol, some to gambling, and some to shopping. Also, some people still over eat, and then vomit often. I am not saying any of these things will happen to you, but unfortunately they can. The only advise that I can give you is to try taking to a counselour now so start working on these things so hopefully you can make your life better, and avoid having such a tough time before you get the VSG. Good luck!!

21 y/o guy never able to have alcohol again?

THIS👆 I think it all depends on how you handled alcohol before starting this program. If it was very casual for you before, then you have a better chance of being able to control it after. Same goes for me, I can handle a glass or two every now and then, but I can definitely see the potential for addiction transfer if you're not careful.
  25. I know this post is older but I was reading everyone's stories and desperately need help. I am 38 year old female and 12 years post RNY and removal of gallbladder. I became lactose intolerant immediately after surgery but have had severe abdominal pains for years after drinking wine, alcohol, etc. I thought it was an ulcer but just had upper/lower scope done a few weeks ago; removed a couple polyps from colon but no big deal and no ulcer seen. I have been having bad headaches for years with chronic constipation, bloating, gas, vomiting and Dr after Dr to find no answers... A couple days ago I became the most ill of all!!! I started having the most severe stomach pain imaginable with extreme bloating, all of my joints hurt, face is swollen, I feel poisoned and feel like something just isn't right in the intestines... Me and my husband decided maybe it was gluten intolerance so we threw out everything that contained gluten and de-contaminated all dishes, etc. I have had low iron always but with the constipation already being so bad it makes it really hard to want to take iron supplement.... I have been sitting here all day, in tears at times from the pain, and just don't know what to do. Trying to get into Gastro Dr here is a month wait. Please help....
