Protein How Do You Get It In
Newfoundlove replied to Anewlifeforme23's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I still can't stomach the Premier Protein drinks. I can choke them down if I have to but am trying other sources. I LOVE cottage cheese and Greek yogurt but currently can only eat 1/4 cup at a time and I'm 17 days out so I still need to supplement. Two days ago I made a Mediterranean Tuna Salad which is really good and I get a good amount of protein from the tuna. At this time my NUT wants me to get 60 grams of protein at least, so I''m still supplementing with shakes (and probably always will). I add Unjury Vanilla protein powder to my yogurt too. I did find a decent mixture that is currently working for me. 1 scoop Unjury unflavored Protein Powder, 1 tsp of Crystal Light Margarita mix powder, and I mix this with about 24 ounces of water as I have a 26 ounce water bottle I use daily. I drink this usually in the morning and can get it down pretty easily within an hour or so. I get 20 grams of protein along with a good amount of water too. Tonight I am making Tilapia for family dinner so I should get a decent amount of protein in from that and these other sources. -
Good question. I don't know. I just know that mashed potatoes was always mentioned to me during that phase. In fact, I was told to only count Protein grams at that phase so I never thought about the fat content. Of course, be sensible and don't eat too much, especially since there isn't any protein in them either! lol. but a few bites should be fine if you can have some protein of some sort first. I was usually eating a yogurt or cottage cheese before I got to the restaurant so didn't really need to eat much anyway. If I was with people that didn't know about my surgery, I would order the closest thing to what I thought I could eat and just pick at that. Sometimes I couldn't eat hardly anything but would just say that I wasn't feeling 100%.

I found greek yogurt to be too stiff most of the time. I mix it with water and thin it down. It is pretty good that way!! Hugs!!! -
I love it! 2 tbsp has only 45 calories, 1.5g fat, and 7g of Protein...I often mix it in FF Cherry Greek yogurt. YUMMY!

I'm definitely not perfect. I've been know to slip in some doritos or a muffin here and there. But what works for me the VAST majority of the time is to eat on a schedule. I eat 6 times a day: Breakfast, morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack, dinner, and evening snack. I eat a set amount at each of those time, I don't just mindlessly eat until I'm overfull. Since I'm eating every 2-3 hours, I really don't have TIME for unplanned snacking. I also just practice the usual trick of not keeping the junk food in the house. I definitely think having scheduled and defined Snacks is the way to go. I'm much less likely to sit down and eat some chips or something junky if I'm due for my afternoon yogurt in less than an hour.

If you're discouraged about never achieving restriction, read this...
Bullwinkle posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Nealy two years after being banded, I finally have restriction! I was banded 05-05-07 with a 10cc band. I've had 6 fills and, although I knew the band was there because I frequently got stuck, I never got full from eating. In fact, the only reason I ever stopped eating was (a) because I guilted myself into stopping, or ( because I was so miserably stuck that I would throw up, and then was scared to eat anything else. I even went to the doc last July for an unfill, but he didn't do that and, instead, had me swallow that white stuff to check my opening, and I was told that I had plenty more room for more fills and that I was eating too big of bites. So, since July, I worked on eating more slowly, chewing more thoroughly, and not getting stuck. It worked for a few weeks, but I just found myself being able to eat more food. I gained a few pounds, lost a few pounds, regained those pounds -- I was the poster child for the yoyo effect. I came to this forum nearly every week and read of others' success -- success that eluded me. I reasoned, "Well, I've got 7cc in my 10cc band, so I should have restriction and feel full." But, I didn't. So, I simply resigned myself to the fact that the band didn't work for me. It happens. I guessed that I was just one of the statistics. I mean, I could eat nearly 4 or 5 cups of food at a meal....easy. I would get stuck because I didn't chew my meat well enough. But, if I chewed really well, I could eat 2 hamburger patties, a large salad with ham bits and shredded cheese and dressing, and 2 cups of yogurt...at one meal...and still had room for 6 or 7 sugar-free Cookies without getting stuck or, more importantly, without getting full. But, guess what? I made an appointment and went to the doc yesterday to discuss it. The nurse checked what I had in there and discovered that I had lost some Fluid from my band, refilled everything to 8cc's, and......drumroll, please..... I HAVE RESTRICTION! I went to work after the appointment and drank a cup of coffee with Splenda and cream. I immediately noticed a difference. I was belching a little after a few sips. When I had my clear broth for lunch, I felt myself getting full....on broth...I was amazed! For dinner, I had 1/2 cup of sugar-free yogurt and 1/2 cup of egg salad with celery and onion bits...and for the first time since I was banded, I was full. Hones-to-goodness comfortably full. Not that "I ate too much Thanksgiving dinner" miserably full, but I knew that if I had eaten any more, that I would be miserable. Do you know what this MEANS to me?! This means that I am FINALLY at the stage where I am eating 3/4 to 1 cup of food at a meal, and feeling full! I NEVER THOUGHT IT WOULD HAPPEN FOR ME! In fact, I told my husband this morning that I might be too tight now because I experienced a wee bit of heartburn last night when I laid down to sleep. But I know that the band will ease a bit in the coming weeks, and it will be okay. And now that I know how to use this tool implanted inside of me, and now that it's working at proper restriction, I can get down to losing this weight properly. I've already been exercising four times a week, and now I FINALLY have the help I've been yearning for. When I got on the wii balance board this morning to exercise and get my BMI and weight, I had lost 1.8 pounds since yesterday morning! Instead of seeing the chart line go UP, it had gone DOWN. I weigh 248 this morning. I was 292 when I was banded 2 years ago. So, take heart, mates......if you think that you'll never hit that sweet spot, YOU WILL. If I can, then anyone can! PS: I was admonished by the doc to come back every six months -- on my anniversary date, and 6 months later. So, I have another appointment for another fill on May 5th, if I need it. And another appointment in November to reassess the situation. For anyone who is discouraged about never hitting that sweet spot, I hope this post helps. Never give up. Never give up. Never give up. Talk with your doc, follow the lap band rules, keep getting fills/unfills, and just keep going forward. You'll get there. -
More than likely, Carlene is right. You've agitated the esophagus and it's become a vicious cycle of inflammation/throwing up, etc. However, it has been said that severe bouts of extreme coughing can cause slippage. I would back of any solids, try liquids, including warm liquids only for a few days. Even things like yogurt, pudding etc - but if things don't improve within a week, I'd sure let me doc know what's going on. This is just my opinion and what I might do for myself. Please consult your doctor if you are truly concerned.

Eating meals
SouthernGirl76 replied to SouthernGirl76's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
No decrease in the amount it's been like that since they introduced eggs. Yogurt and cottage cheese are fine and I measure out around 3 ounces for those. I feel like I'm a being paranoid but really don't know. -
How much Protein were you hitting right after post-op?
FluffyChix replied to vsgnewbie77's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hahahaha! I do think diluting them makes them go down easy, but I never had issues drinking anything liquid. Also if you hate prepared drinks, maybe consider making your own. You don't even have to use protein powder. You can use things like yogurt, cottage cheese, Fairlife FF milk. It will all add up. Add peanut butter powder, spinach, blueberries, avocado for creaminess--even walnuts and things. Then blend the crap out of it until it's TOTALLY smooth and homogenous. You thin it down with Fairlife FF milk until it's a drinkable comfortable consistency for your new anatomy. Then you control how sweet it is. I use liquid stevia and mine are way less sweet. One of my faves was Bananas and Cream (Isopure powder) mixed with decaff coffee blended with a bit of ice for a Cocomo Joe Frapp. I also loved Premier Protein Bananas and Cream shaken with decaff and served over ice. Really cut the sweetness and was liquid like iced coffee. But some do not tolerate the Whey Concentrate from Premier. -
I had been having the same symptoms, but my Dr. and I think it's actually triggered by taking Zoloft. If you're on an antidepressant, one of the possible side effects is gastrointestinal issues (reflux, vomiting, etc). Zoloft and Cymbalta are the worst offenders, though I understand the other antidepressants can also cause this problem. If you're taking an antidepressent, see if your reflux/pain/vomiting follows shortly after you take your meds. If it does, bring it up with your doctor. I'm now eating yogurt with my zoloft and it has toned down the reflux significantly. However, I'm getting off the Zoloft as soon as my dr. gets back into town.

Couch to 5K - Week of 04 ? 10 November
DeltaDawn replied to losingjusme's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hi! Eating for me is still a matter of control and portion. I basically eat about 1500 calories a day and find with that that I am losing about 2 pounds a month... I know it is slow, but I need the calories to keep the running going. On my long run day I have to take a snack with me en route, or I run out of energy. I eat a lot of fruit, salad and yogurt, very little meat and some carbs. Hope this helps. Tomorrow is my 19 km run... wish me luck! Dawn Banded Arpil 4th, 2006 Montreal 358/158/148 -
I had shredded chicken, marinated in Italian dressing. and I'm about to have some Dannon Light and Fit yogurt to take my meds with. However, I take off for St Louis again tomorrow, which means I'm back in the territory of traveling and well meaning co-workers. Ya'll pray for me.

Pre-Op Protein Supplements / Collier Patients
bronco replied to jennyl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've been using "body fortress 100% whey protein" from Walmart. Very inexpensive and tastes relatively good. Virtually no carbs. I mix a scoop in about 8 oz milk in am and pm to get my Protein while in the liquids phase. I expect to use this the rest of my life. That "whey" I get all the protein that I need. Sometimes you might mix it with Slim Fast optima or another powder if the taste bother you. Also use Dannon light and fit yogurt and cottage cheese. One thing I learned from others here was to start in the am if your tight with a warm liquid. I use 8oz of broth when I take my liquid IB gel caps in the am. -
I was banded May 7th. I had at least one protein shake for energy a day. Mix it with 3 or 4 oz. of water, 2 ice cubes; makes it thick and cold. I also mix a dannon lite yogurt (5gm protein) and some vanilla extract, protein powder and spoon it for breakfast; it is nice to eat with a spoon. I just had a fill today, and am on liquids for a day, then soft foods for a day. You can blend anything on the liquid days for variety, such as chunky soups. Eating enough protein helps keep you full longer.

I gave up my sugar free in 5th day post op
Redapples replied to Redapples's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My pureed stage will be yogurt, fish, chicken avocado etc.(that's on my plan) I will be able to have more than liquids. I have diet drinks that I will drink. Remember I'm only doing 8 oz of reg tea a day to help me. I was to weak I'm sure my team would have agreed with me instead of me passing out of low sugar I had to what I needed to do. I know this is not heard of doing this is my journey I'm not promoting to give into sugar just sharing my experiences. Sent from my SM-N920T using BariatricPal mobile app -
Protein and Weight Loss (unrelated)

I think you misread my original post. I was saying My nutritionist was Only counting My Liquid protein for my goals. He did not count my Oikos triple zero yogurt as me reaching my protein intake. He wanted to make certain I was absorbing the nutrients I needed. Not that other proteins don’t add up just not every gram of protein is absorbed especially in the beginning. I was on 2 shakes a day and still as everyone else eat your protein first etc. i am now a little over 4 months. I am on (30 grams protein) shake/mix a day pulse to eat my proteins. I can substitute a protein supplement for a meal if I choose. I have been reading up on it too. The reason being our stomach is small, the surface area is small especially in the first few months as it is swollen and as time goes on the swelling goes down and we can eat a little more. With less surface are. Less acids to break down foods, the stomach is also emptying quicker so not holding it there as long; so shorter time to be absorbed/digested. The liquid proteins are already broken down and more easily absorbed into out system. If you google it especially the bypass it actually shows some percentages of what bypass patients actually absorb at different phases after surgery in the medical abstracts. Not saying at goal weight you no longer or do need a shake. That is there general guide/goal they gave me. I was referring what information was given to me and me alone. Medical information changes all the time so I don’t know if this is new information or just something some surgeons are now paying attention to. -
Protein and Weight Loss (unrelated)

80 is my 'cap' for protein. I usually hit around 70 to 75. 80% of the time it is WITHOUT protein shakes FINALLY. I have occasionally gone over and hit like 82-85 a handful of times. I don't stress too much about a few points over as I am typically hitting under 80 anyways 95% of the time. I finally got fruit incorporated (the low carb ones) and am working to remember to incorporate veggies too. Developed bad bad habits from liquid days and then protein shakes galore...and then finally eating protein, yogurt (which has some protein too) and some fruit...and forgot my veggies! From what I recall, the focus when eating for me...at 4 months out is: protein, followed by veggies followed by fruit. -
Tale of a bariatric diet goody-two-shoes...
playlikeworldchamps replied to Teachamy's topic in Rants & Raves
Love getting sushi at wegmans. Yum! I eat more variety now than before weightloss Before I would have cheeseburgers, pizza, subs, wraps, bagels, etc etc all the time. I was fat and didn't feel that great from that food. Now I will have yogurt or eggs for breakfast, a burger or tuna or chili or even a few pieces of cheese for lunch and a small amount of whatever we are having for dinner. I eat guacamole, beans, fresh fruit, cucumbers. I have a trail mix I make with almonds and dark chocolate m&ms. I don't get bad cravings anymore or rarely. When I do a spoonful of peanut butter stops it short. Life is very good! There is no need to get in a rut or be a goody2shoes. Quantities are small so make each bite count and be high quality and also delicious. Life is too short to eat rice cakes and green slime (I think you mean kale protein powder shakes!) but I will eat purple slime - blackberry/strawberry Greek yogurt shakes! Yum! -
could you eat and drink normal after bypass revision
kswin79 replied to bikerchick519's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had RNY bypass revision after lapband done in 2013 about 2 weeks ago and I am able to drink water without sipping also and I am on Presoft foods already per my doctor stating in paperwork if I felt ok to move to Presoft go forward so that consist of soups, unsweetened applesauce and Oikos Triple Zero yogurt and I have been fine I have appt today for my two week follow up but I had a very bad allergic reaction and I am on three meds to help me not get a ulcer and prednisone to help with the itchy, red breakout. It’s been only two days since I been on the prednisone but I can tell it’s working already still a little itchy but the rash is fading. I think it’s just us healing but the food part is weird bc I thought it would feel major restrictive like the band was but it’s not been so far hopefully our pouch is fine.. I’ll let you know what the doctor states today about us being able to drink n soups two weeks in a no restriction feeling yet? Thanks for sharing also I really can relate.😊 -
We LOVE making our own smoothies. Here's a bunch of ingredients you can mix and match for your own smoothies. When I feel like we are coming down with a cold a superfood antioxidant filled smoothie is our first remedy! Making your own is the healthiest way to go! Nonfat plain greek yogurt Unsweetened Almond milk silken tofu blueberries, peaches, or strawberries (we use frozen) spinach almond butter Protein powder - vanilla, strawberry, or fuzzy navel would be good. stevia, nectresse, or splenda If you really want to get them somewhere else, try checking their website or store for nutritional information. I suspect they are loaded with sugar.
