Cranky sleeve is not so cranky anymore!
mchap25 posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
So excited that all of a sudden this week I am tolerating more food. Still not getting in necessary calories, but I can now tolerate yogurt and cottage cheese. Protein drinks are good too and I can finally eat 1/4-1/3 cup of food per meal for at least 2 meals a day. Adding a third tomorrow. I'm even getting more and more fluids in everyday. But here's the best part: My daughter gave me a hug yesterday and backed up and said, " What's that?" I looked at her funny and she lifted my shirt and pressed on my rib. Then she said "I've never felt that before. I'm so proud of you mommy." -
I don't do no carb or even low carb. I look at the quality and source of the carbs. Simple carbs, "white" carbs (white Pasta, white rice, refined sugars, etc...) I stay away from. However carbs from vegetables, or Beans I don't worry about. You also need carbs for energy. My homemade Protein shakes have carbs from the greek yogurt, fruit and veg I add to them. They fuel my workouts. If I am having a day where I leave the house at 8am and don't get back until I may allow more carbs than on days when I'm home all day.

Snacks or no snacks, I'm confused
BLERDgirl replied to quiltermom65's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
As mentioned different programs have different protocols. Whether or not to incorporate snacks is something to discuss with your nutritionist. In the beginning I could eat very much. It was easier to break up my meals into 5 small ones so I could hit my Protein goals. As I progressed I could handle 3 meals and an afternoon snack if I needed it. Some days I don't and even now some days I may need 2 snacks. Especially if it's a busy, active day. Some days it's something light like sliced cucumbers. Some days it's an ounce of nuts. I stick to pistachio, cashew or almond. I also always have a water bottle with me so that makes getting the water in easy. I don't need to not drink 30 minutes before eating, but I do still give myself a 30 minute window after eating. My day typically looks like this: Wake up: Drink 4 - 8 ounce of water Breakfast: 8/9am - typically a high Protein shake made with Protein powder and greek yogurt Gym: 9 - 10:30 - water aerobics Running around/errands: Drink 20 ounces of water Lunch: 12/2pm Afternoon: drink at least 30 ounces of water Snack: 3/4 high protein snack if needed Dinner: 7pm Rest of the night drink water. Sometimes I go to the evening water aerobics class from 6 -7. On those days I will always have a high protein snack on the way home. Usually nuts, sometimes a Protein Bar. -
Hate chewable multivitamins!

I ordered liquid ones from GNC and at first they tasted good but after surgery I just couldn't handle them. Felt sick every dose. I tried in powdered Protein and yogurt shakes. Still bad. Finally I started putting them in a half of strawberry premier shake and putting in blender. I spent too much money to waste the Vitamins. -
I start the soft foods on Monday. After a week of yogurt I want something to look forward to and plan.... Ideas? What did yall do?

That is good to know! I will start paying attention to the types of carbs I get. I was avoiding anything that had carbs other than my proteins and shakes. I had no energy. I have added oatmeal and Greek yogurt and legumes. I will pay close attention how my body reacts. I am in my 5th week post-op and I am still learning. It's like an information overload! Lol

I need help with breakfast
Debbie623 replied to MIMISAN's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 3 weeks post-op. I eat Greek yogurt or cottage cheese with applesauce. I plan to try egg salad next. These are all easy. You can buy the eggs already hard-boiled to make your own, or find a good deli. Are you a Pinner? I have found many good recipes on Pinterest. Good Luck!! -
I need help with breakfast
Djmohr replied to MIMISAN's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
In the beginning I ate yogurt. Then I added high Protein low carb granola to my yogurt. Now I simply have a protein shake for breakfast although today I had mine very early so I ended up having cottage cheese late morning which is a staple in my house post surgery I cannot eat eggs, they actually make me feel sick but if I could I would definately eat them. They only take a few minutes to prepare and the protein is high, also you can do so much with eggs. I have heard others leverage retried Beans as well. -
Hi @@chelleshocked ... it's 4 weeks post op for me and I'm also feeling good! I can't believe how much better -- and more "normal" -- I feel from week to week. eggs are awesome, and so is Greek yogurt! A few days ago I made Eggface's ham, cheese, and triple onion bites (aka crustless mini quiches), and they're fab! You can substitute ingredients easily if you aren't allowed to have meat yet. http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/2014/10/its-world-egg-day-8-eggceptional-recipes.html

You can do it!!! The struggle is tough but I try to focus on how full the meat makes me and not think about yogurt and oatmeal and refried beans cause I love them to!!!! Lol we will just keep keeping on! It's exciting to realize poor choices and move away from them. Makes me feel like I'm really changing and really doing this!!! Good luck Hun! ???? -
Ranch dressing...never again!
MrsRoboto replied to lucky1gg33's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Have you tried the Bolthouse Farms Ranch? It's a yogurt dressing and it is SO good. A much better choice than regular ranch, you get more bang for your buck. -
I drink premier protein shakes. They have 30 grams of protein and only 150 calories. I should also probably tell you that I have a VERY small sleeve. I'm one of those hated people that never ever feel hungry.....just a light headed faint feeling when I miss eating. I work 12 hour shifts. So I drink a protein shake at 6am. Then eat a light Greek yogurt (great value brand, 80 calories, 12 grams of protein) around 10-11am. I eat a cheese stick (6 grams of protein, 50 calories) around 2-3, then drink another protein shake when I leave work at 7pm. When I get home I nibble on whatever my husband had for dinner. Generally I'll have about 3-4 bites of chicken or hamburger or whatever protein he made. I drink to bottles of water while I'm at work then work on a third before I go to bed. I can drink fluids pretty quickly, but can't eat anything thicker than puréed very well. I definitely can't/don't eat bread or starch in any way shape or form. I throw in the 40 calorie fudgesicles, edie's Popsicles 30 calories, Refried beans with cheese and sour cream on days off, cottage cheese. I'm not great with fruits or veggies yet. I hope this helps!!

Creative Puree meals ?
Kindle replied to PattyGirl24's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I used regular mayo for everything. Never worried about fat. Actually, come to think of it, blending avocado with the egg salad was really good, too. I never really used sour cream that much, I used plain Greek yogurt instead, just for the protein factor. -
Food for unplanned air travel at one month out
lauraellen80 replied to lauraellen80's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks for the suggestions-- it gives me some ideas. @Menelly--I may try some of those, though I can't do nuts yet. I'm still full on 1/4 cup of food, so I'm sure the cheese and meat would be plenty. I don't think I'm supposed to do Protein bars yet, either. @missheidi47-- Thanks for mentioning the cafeteria. I kinda forgot about that! @BLERDgirl--I'll check out the yogurt things. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to have nut butters yet. I'm going to call my surgeon's office when I land tomorrow, so I'll ask (have to anyway, since I am probably not going to be back for my follow-up appointment on Tuesday.) @VSGAnn2014--Things are just so up in the air with my dad at this point, I don't know when or how much I'll be able to get away from the hospital. And it's about 45 minutes from my parents' house, so I won't be able to just run home and scramble some eggs. As for the Protein shakes, I'm not allowed to do Premier or other ready-to-drink ones. I have baggies with my Protein Powder, and I'm planning to just buy a little bottle of milk when I get thru security to mix one. It wouldn't be a long flight, but at such late notice, I couldn't get a direct flight and have to change planes in Atlanta. -
Food for unplanned air travel at one month out
BLERDgirl replied to lauraellen80's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Get some of those yogurt things in squeeze tubes. Just check the labels, they are aimed at kids so they may have a lot of sugar. However they freeze great so they can help keep your other food cold and you can eat them when they thaw. Also get nut butter in the tube packs. I know Target sells single servings of Justin's almond butter like this. get some oatmeal packets as well. You may want to open them and grind them finer and then seal them in zip locks, but this way you can get hot Water and a paper cup and mixed them. -

Once you are there, you will probably be able to get Greek yogurt, maybe hummus in the cafeteria. Maybe cottage cheese on the salad bar. You could try tuna in the pouch. Have a safe trip, and I hope your dad is doing well. I'm sure that your family will be so glad to have you there. -
Sleeved June10th 2015 and STILL at a stall!
seesuzyshrink replied to AmberWarstler's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I think one HUGE mistake I have made is eating fat free refried Beans (which I love). I can only eat 2-3 tablespoons but since they are loaded with carbs...I guess it adds up if I eat them several days a week. And yes, I have just realized that the yogurt I eat daily has 15 carbs!! So...out that goes. Sounds like eggs, cheese, chicken and fish for me from no on. Trying to stay away from sugar-free foods because of the apartame. Let's see what the next week brings! -

alindsey replied to AmberWarstler's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
It's hard in the beginning I was getting like 50-100 I quickly realized Beans were a bad choice in the carb department! As well as some Protein powders I was using that had to many carbs in them. I stay away from potatoes, oatmeal, yogurts and other carb rich foods. Also sugar free foods caused me to stall also but I'm in love with my no carb Isopure Protein Powder so I enjoy that as a treat! I do once a week carb cycling by allowing myself like 50-100 carbs that day in yogurt, nuts, beans or oatmeal just for a little trick-a-roo to my metabolism and to avoid stalls! -

Greek yogurt, peanut butter flavored protein powder, and ice cubes in the food processor makes a great frozen yogurt treat. -

Here's what I've learned from my doctor, nutritionists, nurses, and all of your doctors, nutritionists, and nurses: Weight loss is a life long process. You need to lose most of the weight in the first few months, or you won't be successful. If you don't lose a lot of weight pre-op, surgery won't be successful. No pre-op diet needed. Only Protein shakes the week before surgery. Low fat diet before surgery. No prescription pain meds after discharge from the hospital. Prescription meds for about a month. Only Motrin is allowed for pain from no on. Never ever take Motrin ever again. You can only drink Clear liquids the first week. You need to be on clear liquids for as least two weeks. You can eat very soft foods while in the hospital. Protein Shakes only for two weeks. Protein shakes only for four weeks. Don't graze all day. Make sure you eat every two hours. Take only small sips of Water. You must get 64oz water every day. Don't drink water half hour before eating. Make sure you drink 64oz water. Don't drink water half hour after eating. You can return to work after a week. You'll be off work 4-6 weeks. No carbonated beverages ever again. No carbonated beverages for the first six months. You will probably start to be lactose intolerant. Eat Greek yogurt, it's high in protein. meat is better for you than fresh fruits and vegetables. You'll stretch your sleeve very easily and gain all your weight back. It's really hard to stretch your sleeve. After 6 weeks, you can eat the same as everyone else. You'll never eat the same again. No alcohol for 6 months. No alcohol for 1 year. No alcohol ever again. Over the counter Vitamins are fine. You can only take bariatric vitamins. And my personal favorite, just for me: "oh you're passing out due to being malnourished? Ok, for the next three days, only drink water, don't eat anything." Okey Dokey, then... ????

You've gotten good suggestions. In Store Vitamin Shoppe ad GNC are great places to go. Whole Foods and most drugs stores also carry Protein shakes and powders. I am the rare person who hated the taste of premiere protein. I like Isopure. I can drink their green tea, black tea with lemon and coconut waters. I also liked CVS brand Protein powder. Try to get a variety and try to find one that can be mixed with Soups and teas. I also ate and still eat loads of FAGE 0% greek yogurt. Early on I used to make a Soup by pureeing Beans, straining it and thinning it with vegetable broth. Add in a ½ scoop of unflavored protein powder and it makes for a great high protein, nutritious soup.

Sleeve limitations
Bufflehead replied to liatleder's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
At 2+ years out, my normal diet includes meat, fish, eggs, green veggies, healthy fats (olive oil for the most part), fruit, tree nuts, black coffee, tea, and yogurt. Things that I have occasionally include dairy (other than yogurt), beans, ground nuts, and pulses (such as lentils). Things that I avoid other than on very special occasions are grains, refined sugar, alcohol, and starchy veggies. And by "very special occasion" I mean basically Christmas and Thanksgiving, not "my niece's graduation" or "my mother's birthday." I have learned through very hard experience that with that last group of foods, if I let them into my life, they take over and I am on a rapid road to re-gain. There are definitely some people who can practice "everything in moderation" after the sleeve and not re-gain their weight, and I am not one of them. All that said, I enjoy my food, I love my life, and I do not feel deprived. There isn't any food that I can't physically tolerate (to the point of throwing up or getting food stuck, or dumping), but both leavened bread and carbonation make my tiny stomach very uncomfortable, so I avoid them. Well, I have a few sips of champagne on those special occasions but that is it. Anything more just hurts and defeats the purpose. -
I'm a puker too.....never vomited before the surgery even with the worst stomach bugs. Now it's several times a week. After a panic thinking I had a stricture and 30 minutes on the phone with my doctor I was told it's because I have a very small sleeve. I've also found that I do not tolerate BBQ seasoning in any way shape or form. Or sausage. Also that if I'm eating anything that is not Mushy or puréed then I need to take a Gas X about 3 bites in. But mostly I just stick to protein shakes, yogurt, cheese sticks, and Greek yogurt ice cream bars. Then one or two bites of whatever my husband is eating.

Need snack/meal ideas for work at 2-6 weeks post op
BigViffer replied to theatrejo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
lauraellen80's post is excellent. Buy the tupperware cups and don't purchase individual foods. More preservatives are in those for some reason. In my case, I packed cottage cheese, applesauce and greek yogurt. Better develop a taste for greek yogurt, it's a lot higher in Protein than American so you don't have to eat as much. Don't worry, it will be funky at first but you will acclimate to it soon enough. I buy the Faget plain yogurt in the big tub and add Torani sugar free flavoring or PB2 Protein powder to suit my tastes. Applesauce is not high in protein, but it is in Fiber and you are going to want that. Dried apricots, prunes and figs can be put into a blender with your protein powders for a well rounded food/drink combo. Those individual tuna bags are awesome, but try to avoid the canned chicken and tuna salad. They are too high in fat. Also, get a good shaker cup. Damn things cost $15 sometimes, but you will have it by your side at all times and you don't want one that leaks after being washed a couple times. Don't ask me how I know. Crystal Light Water enhancers are a lifesaver for me. The water at my office tastes like pool water to me, so that helps mask it. Hope this helps!
