Weight loss WITHOUT surgery?!?
Michelle920 replied to rosemaryb's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I can totally relate, except I'd been dieting over 35 years. I've gained and lost probably 400lbs. I'm afraid to do the math!! When my weight was creeping up again, I started running through my diet repertoire to decide which one to go on next, but I was sure I'd just gain it back so I had a consultation with my surgeon and never looked back. I'm sorry your insurance doesn't cover it. But if there is any way you can swing it financially, do it!! I have zero regrets. It's been a bit of a roller coaster and I've had a small regain, which I'm losing now, but all in all, I'm a success!! -
I didn't think I'd be one to fall off the wagon
monalyssa33 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had surgery in February 2017 and lost about 110 pounds before surgery and another 80 after surgery (at my lowest, which was 210). In the last year and a half, I've gained about 40 pounds. Around the same time I started gaining, I also moved out of my parents' house and now live alone. My biggest problem has been sweets and fighting sugar cravings. My activity level hasn't been consistent either, but I'm more concerned about my eating than anything else. I guess I just need some motivation or some encouragement to get things back on track and ideas to get started again. -
Weight loss immediately following surgery?
gal friday replied to brandytanny's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Yup. I came home from the hospital at 9 days post-op (I had non-surgical complications) and when I weighed myself a week later I was down 19 pounds. I was worried I wouldn't lose any more weight after I came home, but in my second month I was down another 10 pounds. -
I didn't get good restriction until my 4th fill. Now I have to be much more careful when I eat and there are things that I can't eat anymore. Bread kills me. But I'm not losing much either. I'm averaging 1.5 pounds a weeks so far. But when I look back at the constant gaining that got me here, I'm happy. I just have to be patient.

Hi everyone I am 1 month out from surgery. I desperately need to know things are gonna get better because I am really starting to get depressed. I don't want to live the rest of my life fearing to eat. Please give me some suggestions. I am at the puree stage but everything I try makes my me feel sick or gives me cramps in my stomach after I eat it. Even liquids feels like a big ball is stuck in the middle of my stomach. I have to let my adult kids come over a literary pat my back and rub it like burping a baby to get gas bubbles out my body. They only good thing about this is I have loss 32 pounds since my surgery but it has come at a high price. If it were not for the support I receive here I would be so depressed. I can't talk about this with anyone else. The people I have talked to and casually mentioned the subject of Weight loss surgery think it is crazy to have part of your stomach surgically removed. ...I can't reverse what I did but I need to know things will change. Thank you for your support.

My psych eval was super easy and I had the nicest psychologist (who has had WLS, so that was extra great). My eval was scheduled for 2 hours, but it took less than 1 hour. She asked me basic questions about what have I done to lose weight before, what are the potential complications of surgery, what do I feel the outcome of surgery will be, etc. She also had me answer random questions like what is 8745 backwards, draw a circle inside a triangle, and other odd things like that. I asked her why she did those and she said it was to demonstrate that I can follow directions. She also asked about depression, anxiety, etc. I have some anxiety, but it wasn't a problem as I'm still a functional person . In all, it was a very pleasant meeting and I knew immediately that she'd approve me for surgery. Try to not stress about it.

I'm a week and a day post op and I have only lost 13 bounds all together I feel kind of depressed about that because I think I should have lost more weight than that. Ant feed back???

It isn't an essential part of the process, but more of a preference on the part of your surgeon. The extensive pre-op diets that some docs impose doesn't really shrink the liver, but is said to help reduce the fatty/slimy coating that is often present on us fatty liver/obese patients. My doc doesn't do the major pre-op diet program, just the day before clear liquids bit, but then he also does liver transplants aside from his bariatric practice, so I guess he is used to dealing with livers in crappy condition. He said my liver was in good shape when he was in there (and I gained a little in the weeks leading up to surgery, for what that's worth!)

HELP - the more I exercise, the more weight I gain...
GuyMontag replied to ngon251978's topic in Fitness & Exercise
That's why I think charting your body fat percentage is much more beneficial than following weight or BMI while exercising. -
My psych eval was similar to yours. I didn't have to do any tests or use a computer. The psychiatrist I had was nice and asked me about my weight and family history. I don't know it is in other states, but the only way to not pass a psych eval is to admit to depression, even if it was in the past. *insert quote from Oprah or Maya Angelou here*

HELP - the more I exercise, the more weight I gain...
brianb replied to ngon251978's topic in Fitness & Exercise
Post is getting a little old, but have to say this has been my experience. B-52 nailed it. All the tearing of muscle creates inflammation which, I believe, is mostly Water retention. My weight always jumps for a few days after starting a workout. I jumped 3 pounds almost overnight this last time. This initial weight gain though falls off within a week then I usually see a huge weight drop. -

@60&goin4it Yep finaly did. The other Josh did mine Dr Murout.. I loved him. Dr Roller said that I would. Everything is great for me also other than I havent lost a pound.... I lost about 40 lbs right before surgery and was told not to worry but Im like come on. Anyways My original Surgery was Oct 12 but got cancelled at Phys Hosp becasue my heart went Crazy So It was put off till Nov 16th. So Im only 3 weeks out... Able to eat fairly good and drink just fine... All in all a really good experiance other than the no weight loss thing. Neat to see a fellow Roller Weight Person and Neighbor. I'm from Bentonville. Confused on which surgery to look into
60&goin4it replied to tbella67's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
@@tbella67 I was the same as you when I first went to see my Doctor, I was going in for the Sleeve. They said I was a good candidate for the RNY Bypass. Scared me, it sounded so invasive!!! So I did my research, talk to people who had had all three from the band to the RNY bypass. After all my research & talking over with the Dr. who has done over 4000 Bypass surgery's I decided to do what he suggested was right for me, the RNY bypass. I had it done Oct.8th this year & have been very happy with the results & wasn't near as painful as I thought it could be. Much easier. If you have acid reflux they say the RNY bypass is a better choice. I have a friend who had the RNY Bypass, at the same time his 2 younger brother's had the sleeve. After they all reached their goal, his brother's who had the sleeve began regaining most of their weight. My Dr. said, what he has seen now after the sleeve has been out for awhile, that some people were regaining their weight more often than the RNY Bypass. I didn't want to go through the process again. Don't let this discourage you what ever you choose. Many people have been successful with the sleeve, as well as the band. I know the RNY bypass is working for me so far. I have lost 21 lbs in 7 weeks since surgery. I don't even feel like I have had surgery except no hunger & I get full quickly. Best of luck to you what ever you choose!!! -
Well... Basically, i had stopped following the rules, and had emotional eating problems. I just strated eating a lot, basically. I'm trying to get back to the mindset that i had when I started my weight loss journey. Thank You for your reply

3 wks post op - questions about port pain, exercise, and weight loss
labec1130 replied to wurly's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just read in another thread about the same problems with weight loss. It was stressed there that if you are eating too little calories that your body could go into starvation mode and reserve all your calories thus little to no weight loss. 600 calories a day with such vigorous exercise seems like too little to me but I may be wrong. Ask your Dr. of course and dont get discouraged. It will come to you. You seem to be quite dedicated so I know you will experience incredible results. It does however require something I know I dont have much of...and that of course is patience:) -
I have spent the last 15 years yo-yoing in my battle with my weight. I used fad diet after fad diet and never could find an actual lifestyle that helped me be healthier. For the first time I'm actually learning to make better choices and I'm building healthier habits. It makes the weight loss feel even better to know that I'm learning to change my relationship with food instead of hiding behind whatever diet I was on at the moment. I try very hard to keep in mind that the surgery was a tool, not a permanent solution. It gave me the opportunity to change my life but those changes have to come from me. Reading stories like yours and seeing the progress you have made is really inspiring. You look great and I'm sure the lifestyle changes you have made make you feel great too! Newb to the board, but banded since 7-28-04
EmileeKaye replied to Pattman's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I just recently joined here also, I was banded in June 2004. Wish I would have found this place earlier! Congrats on the weight loss! -
I had my lap band surgery in October 2005. I initially lost 28 lbs. I have had seven fills since 2005 but I now weigh what I weighed before the surgery. I have cut back to about 1500 calories a day. I can feel more restriction right after a new fill but in a couple of weeks I don't notice the restriced feeling anymore. Has anyone experienced a similiar situation? Thanks JB

Hi! My name is Erin! I'm a 32 year old woman who has the pleasure of living in sunny Florida. I am lucky enough to live a busy life with great friends, a wonderful family and a job I absolutely love!! Unfortunately, I hate my weight. I'm embarrassed about my body image and even though I've tried for what feels like MILLIONS of times to lose weight - I always end up gaining more. I never really thought I'd be one to consider surgery but at this point, I feel like it's the only option that will actually work. I'm ready for my body to be able to keep up with the rest of me! I look forward to getting to know the people of this forum. I'm so nervous right now because I am at the very beginning stages and I have no idea if my insurance is going to cover my surgery. It -is- a covered benefit, but who knows if that means it will be covered for me! Wish me luck!
