    Doubts?

I also thought about the "aggression" on my body... but then I looked at my photos and saw a much more serious aggression... 75 pounds packed on in 10 years, sleep apnea, knee pain, back pain, bloating and gas, fatty liver, moving towards diabetes... I could not understand how I got so far, how I let that happen to me, how I did that to myself. Now I am happy and my body seems to be very accepting of the harm reduction approach I took. Knee pain is gone, sleep apnea is gone, fatty liver is gone, bloating is gone... I am positive I could not do it without my sleeve.
  2. I'm 31 and mom to three kids: 6,5,2. My start weight was 325 but I'm now At 302. I have one dietitian visit left on sept 11 and then she will submit and hopefully get the approval and be able to schedule me. She said the surgeon is in the hospital on 10/15/12 so. I'm hopeful that will be my date! I'm actually having a duodenal switch (DS) but there isn't a specific board for that, so here I am. Doctoring at Abbott northwestern in Minneapolis, mn with dr. Leslie. For pre op diet, I was required to lose over 15 lbs and then do liquids for 2 days prior to surgery. We are planning a family vaca to Disney early next year and I'm looking forward to fitting on an airplane seat! What things are you looking forward to doing that you haven't been able to do for a long time or ever?
  3. My surgery is a week from today and I woke up with a totally sore throat.....it's almost swollen shut. No fever or any other symptoms I am praying it's allergies. I called my surgeon's office today and OF COURSE didn't get a call back. I know most times surgery can't be done when you are sick but I also don't want to take my medicine since I was supposed to be off everything except my blood pressure meds 10 days before surgery After working so hard to get to this point since last May I do not want to be denied last minute!! Anyone know if it's okay for me to take allergy/cold meds? or any natural remedies okay for me to do? I am on the liver shrink diet so didn't want to even try honey
  4. My periods have never stopped, but were very mild and light. After surgery and 40 lbs, my periods were horrible. I should have about 10 more years before menopause. I can't wait. I hope for your sake they don't return.

    My Journey

Hey everyone, my name is Frank. I'm 29 years old and I'm a paramedic in the Tampa Bay Area. I'm currently 326lbs and was 356lbs at my heaviest. At 6'3" I carry the weight a little better than some are capable of doing so when I talk about getting the sleeve done a lot of people seem surprised and try to discourage me from doing it. These people never saw me at 220lbs 10 years ago and I was a stud. A femur fracture and some tough events in my life lead to a steady weight gain and I've battled with it for some time now. Back in August 2016 I did my research and made the decision to move forward with my decision to get a VSG. My surgeon is Dr. Richard Gordon out of Largo, FL and I will be having the surgery at Mease Dunedin Hospital just north of Clearwater. My insurance requires 3 months of a physicians supervised diet so I've been doing that. I've also met with the nutritionist, had my abdominal Ultrasound, a sleep Study and this week will have an endoscopy done as well as my psych eval. All that willl be left after this week is one more meeting with my physician as well as a pre-op EKG, Chest X-Ray, and Blood work. Hoping for a mid-January surgery and excited for the lifestyle change that comes with it. I love reading all of your individual journeys and hope to share as much of mine as I feel comfortable with. I feel like this adds a special level of support and accountability that my peers who haven't experienced this can't provide. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  6. Well, I started to lose a little hope for getting approved. The doctor's office was moving and hired a new (inexperienced) insurance coordinator when I finished all the insurance prerequisites. I felt like I worked for the doctor's office because of all the calls I had to make to the insurance company with verifying what was needed and what was missing. What should have took only a couple of weeks took 2 months. I'm a woman of faith so the delay started me wondering if this is God's way of saying I should reconsider the surgery. I just completed the Daniel fast for 10 days and lost 6 lbs. Now I'm around 200 lbs at 5'3 BMI 35.4. My mind fluctuates every now and then but I still have the overshadowing feeling that I'm so tired of battling this weight. Will be scheduling surgery tomorrow!!!!!!

    Newbie From Birmingham

Hi Jazzy. I am a Gadsden girl who had my sleeve done by Dr. schmitt on March 19. Dr. Miles checked on me and followed up with me as well. I have had no problems at all and am down 37 pounds. I believe that having either of these doctors gives you such a great base for having a good sleeve experience. Feel free to message me if you have any questions. Good luck!!!!!
  8. O he's actually the only surgeon I've ever read about on these forums who's said that. Anyone else who's mentioned that their surgeon said anything about the gain/loss thing after plastic surgery has said they were warned a 10-15 lb gain either way will affect results. I don't know that there's been any research on this to know for absolute sure, but since there's evidently some difference in opinion, I'd sure want to be at a fairly stable weight before taking the plunge (and ms.sss, I know you and I have had this discussion before, so I'm just reiterating it for the sake of the OP)
  9. Reporting in that I had a great day today. Stuck with my meal plan and had a really good workout at the gym. Thanks again to everyone who provided words of encouragement. It was just what I needed! I'm still getting used to talking about weight loss and being honest when I have a bad day. I usually just suffer in silence because I'm so mad at myself and embarassed. Just about all of my friends and family members are thin and it's impossible to talk to someone who thinks having 10 pounds to lose is a big deal. I have to say I'm actually looking forward to my psych consult. Pretty sure it is going to be more helpful than I think.

Who are you telling before surgery?

I actually told a patient of mine, who had a RNY over 10 yrs ago & I thought would be supportive....his friend actually said to me "have u heard of the new chocolate diet?" I was speechless, however my thoughts were seriously lady don't you think I have exhausted other options...Hind sight is 20/20. For others wondering my co-worker said "if you broke ur foot u would use crutches right, same thing with surgery" Sumtimes we all can use crutches : )

    Any Hunters on here?

I'm hoping to get banded in early October or so.... This should give me plenty of time to get over the initial pain etc.. for our November 15th opening of rifle season! I was with my husband last year when he got a monster 8 point. This buck was huge - bigger than most of the 10 + pointers on the pole! My turn!

    Traveling . . .

I had my band put in Oct 10ccband. First fill blind poke three tries 3cc in. Second two pokes dig dig 3cc in, third three pokes dig dig 1ccin RESTRICTION!!! Ya good weight loss happy. Fourth wanted to tweak a little only had restriction in the morning fill 1cc five pokes dig dig. Next day no restriction I think I have a leak. Drive another 200 miles for fluoro and she is able to get 5cc out I should have 8cc plus doc put in 2cc at time of surgery (that is 10 in a 10cc band) she adds 1cc more Fill # Five now I should have 11cc no restriction at all I have a leak. She said sometimes the tube collapses and you can’t get a true read. She said you don’t have a leak because I got something out. They don’t want to take any responsibility for f-ing it up. The obvious problem with having bands in Mexico is the after care. I knew this and yet chose to go for it. If I go back to my doc it is $2500 to replace port and tube. Then what who do I have do the fills? I should have had a sleeve that is what my doc is famous for and there would have been no fills, no leak and it was $2000 more than a band so in the long run cheaper after you factor in the cost of fills and heart ache!! ANYONE OUT THERE DO NOT HAVE NORTH WEST FILL CENTER IN ARLINGTON WASHINGTON DO YOUR FILLS. QUACKS!!! So where do I go from here?? Right now after I beat myself up I am doing nothing can’t afford it so I am trying on denial to convince myself that I have restriction. Any suggestions???

    Scale is NOT MOVING

salsa1877, :Hi ! I would love to know what have you been eating and what type of activity are you doing? I had my surgery on 10/8/07 and have lost 30lbs. I don't think I am eating enough or maybe not the right foods. For instance forr breakfast I had a bowl of life cereal, lunch I had baked tortilla chips and picante sauce. Dinner was a 1/2 order of a chicken and mashed potatoes dish from 54th street restaurant. I try to walk at least every other day. What do you think?

    Just Getting Started

Thanks for the responce, ladies! I really do think that I'm off to a good start... I have approval from my PCP, a letter from her giving me the okay for surgery, a letter from her stating her medical opinion of why it's necessary, as well as a report of my past 6 months on the IsaGenix diet. From my understanding of speaking with my DR - I need to track 30 days of exercise, diet and weight loss (for my insurance's request), and need to lose 5-10% of my bodyweight before they will approve the surgery. I'm meeting for an orientation in the next two weeks, and hope that from there I can get my psych eval, the labs and the ekg. The surgeon's office said a "typical" case gets everything approved and completed in 90 days. She also told me that the "harder I work and more anxious I am" the quicker I'll get in. Gives a girl a little hope, no?

    Pre Op Diet

I was on a two week liquids/lean and green diet. I had a Protein shake for breakfast/lunch, then a salad for dinner with chicken, shrimp or pork. Large salads with lots of other stuff, too. Artichoke hearts, tomatoes, carrots, broccoli ... everything. Large restuarant size. Lost 10 pounds and the Dr said my liver looked great and was easy to work with. BTW, I did not eat anything the day before surgery as I didn't want to be sitting in the bathroom a couple hours after surgery ... if you know what I mean.

    your VERY first steps

Go to the Allergan site, they have a list of doctors that you can look up by location. www.lapband.com I called my insurance company and: 1) made sure they cover the band 2) asked what the requirements were and had them fully explained to me 3) got a person at the insurance compnay who will be my "complex case manager" that I can call and ask questions of anytime I need to 4) asked for all of those insurance requirements to be sent to me so that I have them in writing. 4a) got together with my PCP and made sure all the ducks were in a row 5) asked the insurance company what surgeons they would pay for me to see-got that in writing too 6) compared the insurance list to the Allergan list 7) picked a couple and called and started asking questions and signing up for information sessions 8) attended an information session 9) made an appointment with the surgeon for a pre-op consult 10) made an appointment for the psych consult, got that done Now I'm waiting to see the surgeon on the 27th.

    Whats up with pasta?

If you can get a small amount of pasta down, with a meat sauce, like 10 pieces of ziti, does that mean you need more restriction?

How fast did you get to goal?

    How long til regular food?

I was on liquids until my post-op visit, which was 10 days. Then I went to mushies for a week and regular food after that.
  21. How long was it before you could eat regular food after you were banded? I had the informational seminar on Wednesday and they gave us the diet layout and I can't start regular food till 11 weeks after surgery! :faint: It seems that that is a lot longer than other people have had. I'm on full liquids from 3 days after surgery to week 3, then on pureed food till week 5 and soft foods (is that what's considered mushies?) week 6-10. I have my first consult with the surgeon on Thursday and will definately be asking about the post-op diet! Just wondering what the average is here.
  22. Hi everyone I was banded on Monday Nov 19 and subsequently discharged on Tuesday. My doctor told me that I could pretty much start back on the same diet I was on for the week before surgery (high Protein low fiber) So I'm eating oatmeal, mashed potatoes, etc. I was afraid to start eating those things because of what I've read here - but I figured he "saw" what he was working with and only HE knows how he positioned my band... Now onto my problem ... If not for the pain I'm having at my port site (which is about 3 inches above my belly button) and at one of my insicions on the left .. I don't feel any different. I got up a few hours after surgery and started walking so that the gas would be tolerable - and it has been, so far. I am able to drink normally (I expected to only be able to have tiny tiny sips) and I honestly haven't been "super chewing" my food and have not had any issues. I'm almost starting to think that they cut me up and didn't put anything in there :paranoid ... I mean shouldn't I feel SOMETHING ?? The only thing I am doing is limiting the amount I eat - and stopping when I'm full ...
  23. It started last night. I had a fill 10 days ago and have been doing fine...last night I made the mistake of taking a tiny sip of water after I ate and I got sick and threw up....then today for lunch I ate and got sick......How would I know if anything slipped during this throw up fest I seem to be having all of a sudden.

    Protein Shake Alternatives

I'm so sorry that all of you are going through this! Can't imagine the anxiety prior to every meal, and then the pain of vomiting afterwards. I hope that you find a lot of other options through this board. I had surgery on 10/26 and I'm still on full-liquids. One of my options is egg-drop Soup and yesterday I made it twice because I needed a break from artificial sweetners (the taste just gets stuck on my tongue and I can't stand it!) I was nervous because I thought "but, scrambled eggs aren't until I'm on mushies - Stage IV", but the way the egg is cooked in this soup makes it like silky strands that just dissolve, rather than pieces of egg. I had it twice yesterday, took it really slow, and had no issues. I appreciated the ease of making it, the convenience of having everything on hand (chicken broth and eggs) and the fact that an egg has 6grams of Protein (while I'm also getting in the Fluid of the soup). While it's not an amazing amount, like the Protein shakes, it is something. I also want to mention that when I just can't take my protein shake, I have a carnation instant breakfast(no sugar added). I was given this on my last day in the hospital when I was moved to stage 3 liquids. In terms of protein, it's only 13grams, but it's much thinner than my protein shake and it just seems "milder". Again, not the best source of protein, but perhaps an option (and at $3.99 for a box, it's not much of an investment either). I wish you all the best of luck!!!
  25. After the surgery, I developed a serious problem with constipation. I tried several things to resolve the problem including Probiotics, Metamucil, and laxatives; without success. The only thing that was effective was using glycerin suppositories. I just couldn’t accept inserting a suppository up my rectum every three days for the rest of my life as a viable solution. This was a serious problem. Then almost by accident I stumbled on a simple solution. I found that eating an apple or two each night before I went to bed corrected the problem. But it was important to also eat the skin of the apple. I have followed this regiment for the past 10 months and no problems. My mother who did not have surgery also suffers from this type of problem. I suggested she eat an apple each night before bed. But she says she can't because she has false teeth and the skin gets stuck. I was at my monthly bariatric surgery support group meeting yesterday and another person said they experienced the same problem because of her false teeth. She wanted to know if I had any solution. I thought about it and decided that perhaps one could blend the apple. I experimented today. I cut the core out of the apple and blended it with the skin to the consistency of apple sauce in my Ninja blender. I soon discovered that I needed to add a little liquid to make it blend properly - about a quarter or half cup of (no-sugar) apple juice. It seems like it might work. But since I still have my teeth, I am not able to perform a complete test. So if you suffer from constipation and if you have false teeth and are up to an experiment - try blending an apple a day with the skin (but not the core) and let me know (1) does this type of apple sauce get stuck in your teeth and (2) does it solve your constipation problem.
