  1. Hi, Just got revision from band to gastric bypass. There was a seven month wait between taking the band out and getting the bypass. I've been mostly subsisting off protein-added soy milk. I cannot, CANNOT take the taste of artificial sweeteners anymore. Drinking the Protein shakes bring tears to my eyes. Weird how taste buds change after surgery. I could handle them after the Lap band surgery. But drinking has been weird. There was a time a couple days ago I think I swallowed too many Vitamins at once, and I felt a sharp pain near my tummy. The initial pain isn't there, but now when I drink, I get a weird achy pain near my left hip. I hope I'm not leaking. Not to mention my body has been achy as heck. Especially my mid and lower back... Sigh. Well, a week and a half left of liquids. Then I can be on mushy foods and I can get protein in without and sweets or artificial sweeteners.

You've had your sleeve for a few months, do you find yourself hungry when you shouldn't be? that is one of my fears, that the hunger that shouldn't be happening won't be gone. I know some of it is "head hunger" but I have my concerns about the hunger. I do get hungry at times but it's never when I shouldn't be. It happens when I haven't eaten for some time and am 'really' hungry. I can go quite a long time before that happens as well. I do get cravings occasionally but I am no longer able to binge like I used to. It all takes a while to get used to to be honest. There are a lot of people here who have had their sleeves far longer than me and will be able to better advise you. I'm still learning! Your surgery seems to have been very successful and looks like the band helped quite a bit too. Best of luck. Thank you. It has been and I am very grateful for having the opportunity to have the revision surgery. My band was good whilst it was working efficiently and I did lose a lot of weight with it although you will find that most people lose more and faster with the sleeve. Mine's slowed down now but that is fine as I am still losing and not gaining weight. I haven't heard anyone say that they are dissatisfied with their sleeve or regret having it done. Good luck x

    New Lap Band

I have had my Band sicne 2007 my weightloss was wonderful and then in mid 2008 it just stopped, no matter what I do it does not go down it goes up. I have been filled and un filled as we call it here. I have suffered three different times from a dilated esophagus, my band gets very tight weeks after the fill, I vomit so hard that I sob afterwards. I have developed all over again GERD, night reflux and a bit of a cough. I have re gained 20 pounds and all I get from my Dr. is well maybe this is where your supposed to be with your weight, well no I don't think so. I requested a revision with the same Surgeon last year and I was refused twice by my health plan due to new guiodelines and such. I exercise daily and walk and yes I even still watch my diet and no matter what I am regaining and not losing. My question is can the lap band become defective after so many adjustments in the port and a few times the nurse could not find the right area in the port and I would get stuck several times. would a new Lap Band help resolve these issues I don't know and the last time I seen the Dr. he was in such a hurry that he rushed me through the appointment due to his office being over booked. I eat very little due to the pain with swallowing and the vomiting. I contacted the Dr. on Thursday and well no one even gets bak withme. Maybe I need a different Bariatric Dr. This surgery is supposed to help the patient not make them get worse.
  4. Hi I had my band out with sleeve revision on 9/12/13. In the recovery room I developed a large baseball sized hematoma at the site of my port removal. They put pressure and ice on it so it subsided some and my blood counts were ok, meaning I didnt lose too much blood. My question is this. Has anyone else had this happen? I now have a hard lump about the size of a bar of soap at the site. My Dr says it should reabsorb. How long does it take. Its really annoying and now that Im losing some belly fat, it kind of sticks out. Yuck. Thanks, Kathy
  5. I want to go from band to sleeve. I was to,d I need to do the whole pre op work up again which I am finding really annoying. Apparently insurance will approve removal at this point but won't even consider revision until I do the whole thing, psych, support group, etc. I just hope I don't do it all and then they still decline revision since I'm below a bmi of 40. I am like 36 right now. It might be worth your while to contact Lindstrom Obesity Advocacy. Initial consult is free.

  7. It took me 4 years to lose the weight I have so far. I requested a slow-fill-course because I kept having to have ortho surgeries over that time. I wanted to have enough nutrients to heal well. And so I did and here I am, starting over- getting the basics back down; how much protein/carb/veg per day, etc Now, I'm struggling with finding my green zone. I think for the first time. my weightloss was primarily due to pain (theres no hunger with screaming pain!) and also inflammation around the band-site i.e.: a false restriction due to painkiller meds & stress of not working etc. Now, I'm also dealing with another unexpected complication. I'm working through it. NOT giving up on my band even though I've been maintaining around 160# for about a year- 25# from goal- so close. I'll make it! I spoke with my PA at last visit and told him I'd seen many posts about band failures. He told me that percentage-wise, I was the exception to the rule for "their" bandsters. "Most are have gone with revision to the sleeve" he said. So I asked him- "In your opinion, were the revisionist bandsters' failures due to impatience (want a quick fix) and not following instructions and/ or eating around the band?" At first, he wanted to avoid the question- mumbled a little. I asked more specifically & precise in a way he couldn't talk around. He ultimately said YES! That's why the majority failed. He said many people, aside from not wanting to give up old habits, want that next best thing, i.e.: latest fad. The sleeve, as the next best thing, many people jumped on board. A Quick fix. Quicker weight loss. Not as much patience required to lose the weight- at least in the beginning. I've read about complications on all the WLS forums here. There's a percentage in every category genuinely struggling with complications. (not lazy non-compliers or quitters) It's like that with ANY kind of surgery, not just WLS. There's always going to be a certain percentage of failed procedures. There's also a percentage of failures due to patients not following doctor's orders. Can't just heap everyone into one category. And then there are the successes! To my amazement, I've found so many band-success stories here. I've found a good many bandsters who've lost upwards of 150-200#, found their green zone, and are living happy lives in band-synchronicity. I'm not at green zone, nor at goal yet. Even so, I expect to be one of the many band-success stories And I will!
  8. Hi has anybody on this site had a band and revise to a gastric sleeve and then been Resleeved?

    KS - Southwest Kansas

I'm from Wichita. My surgery is Dec 8 so it's almost time! I'm having a band to sleeve revision and they removed my band two months ago. Ended up in Intensive Care with a gastric bleed from the band erosion so I'm a little skittish, but still excited and committed!
  10. I am a band to bypass patient. I was banded in 2010, lost about 30 lbs, and began having issues. I was unfilled about 2 years and then started having swallowing issues. I started researching revision options summer 2014 and was sold on the sleeve. I read and watched every sleeve-related article or video I could find. When I had my consult in January, the doctor was all on board with the sleeve so I went for my pre op tests which included a esophageal manomtry (which is awful) and other GI tests. Long story short, the band damaged my esophagus and it was slowly swallowing which is why I'd get stuck even with thick liquids. Because of this my doctor felt the bypass was the better option and I trusted what my doctor suggested because he knows, I don't. I wanted whatever I was going to be most successful with regardless of what I thought I wanted. I'm almost 10 weeks post op and very happy with where I'm at and where I know I'm going. No vomiting and no swallowing issues!

    The Journey has officially begun!

Thank you so much. I know most people aren't happy and excited to go to the doctor but I was. I couldn't even sleep last night. A little weird i know but I just can't wait to have this darn thing taken out and have the revision done. Counting down the days till my next visit. 12 days.....lets get it! 12. I just got back from Baja California from having my lap band removed and getting a gastric sleeve revision. I have to tell you that I was a little scared to go to another country to have surgery (at one point terrified actually), but I had talked to a lot of people who'd been to this particular team. I could find no complaints, whatsoever, about the doctor, the assistant doctor, the anesthesiologist, or the hospital. I had a very good preliminary discussion with the doctor regarding my particular situation (which was problematic to be sure). He happily reviewed my CT images of the slipped band (and also had his radiology department consult) and addressed my concerns. I have to tell you that I am beyond pleased with the care I received while there. If you are considering going to Mexico, and you're just not sure, IM me, and I will provide my phone number so you can ask me any specific questions. I'll sum it up here. I recommend Dr. Illan and his team without hesitation.
  13. I just had my post op appointment. The reason why I had to get the sleeve was a decision made by the surgeon. Before when I had the surgery it was a plication with a lap band. Then he revised it to the sleeve surgery. When the surgeon before the surgery did it he messed it up. It wasn't done correctly. So basically this surgeon revised it and the best bet was to make it a sleeve. I am losing a lot of weight now but it is getting too much. I am losing too much weight on this.

    New here!

Hi welcome. There is a singles forum but nobody posts to it. I am 3.5 years post band to sleeve revision single, enjoying life!
  15. I had my revision surgery done on Dec 1st and I'm doing very well so far. I had the sleeve done 3 yrs ago and despite losing quite a bit initially, I did not have long term success with it at all. I also had issues with acid reflux after the sleeve. In just 4 weeks I have noticed a significant difference with the bypass regarding my acid reflux...it's gone! So I still have ALOT of work to do, but know that the revision surgery is possible and can be done. Good luck to you!

    Swell around port

I just had my second port revision this past friday because it had flipped and I'm also swollen from where the port is. I have been applying an ice pack and that seems to be helping with the swelling. It's all worth it..

    Port Revision?

There is someone on here that had a port revision and went from a standard port to a low profile port. Maybe if she is still around she can chime in. I do know that she was very happy she had it done and if I remember correctly it was no bid deal. Maybe some of the others that have been here for a while remember her and can point you in her direction.
  18. I'm curious about what others may be eating at about 7 weeks out from surgery. I'm around 700 calories per day with a 50% protein 20% fat 30% carb ratio. I had a revision from sleeve to RNY and after the initial 20 pounds lost the rest is coming off extremely slowly. Its hard to get the 75-90 grams of protein in without relying on 2 shakes a day. I'm looking for tips on what to eat to get my protein in with eating 3-4 small meals per day. (1/2 a shake or no shake if possible) Thanks in advance for sharing!
  19. Hi! Am en route to have my lapband revised to the RNY (most likely- not sold on the sleeve...) and I am trying to figure out how much time off from work I need. When I had the lapband surgery, I spent a day in the hospital with gas pains and just a little sore. If I had the job I have now back then (middle school teacher- so I can be fairly sedentary if needed) I think I would’ve been able to go back to work within a few days. I mean, I just had a baby with no drugs, had to be stitched and I was going on long walks the day after. I also had ankle reconstruction and went back to work in 4 days (including a weekend). Not saying that I am super tough, just a seasoned surgery patient- there are way more that I could list :) Those who have had both surgeries, how do you think the recovery time and pain compares? Thanks! Amanda
  20. With our history or losing and gaining multiple times, of course it's normal to feel some terpidation. And you can help yourself by knowing tha you probably will gain back at least some of what you lost. There are statistics out there the can help you understand the percentages. I put back so much, that I opted for a revision. I have no regrets. But no, this is not a cure. For me, I feel my weight has always been, and WILL always be , an issue. But the decision to do this has been one wild rider and I only wish I had done it sooner!

    The Losing Battle

Julie I think you are right ... The revision talk is all I see ... I lost 40 lbs and creeped 20 back since 2008. I'm currently getting mild gerd symptoms .. But it's because I am eating around the band and not excising like I should be. I wonder if the band has slipped. But I can't go through another surgery. Hello, New To Site... 6 Days Post Op Band To Sleeve

  23. I've been having trouble on/off for the past 1 1/2 years with my band. It's finally decided my band has slipped and I'm scheduled 9/8 for a removal of the band and revision to RNY. As the days tick by, I'm getting more and more nervous about the revision. I definitely have a case of the 'should I, shouldn't I's'. Just dont know what to do. The advantages of continued weight loss are clear. But I'm scared to death of the possible complications. Any one else have these feelings, and if so, how did you come to terms with your decision? Are u happy with your decision? I'd love to hear your story, and suggestions.

    Surgery for removal scheduled

Peggy1011, Everyone who has revised from lap band to another surgery has a different story, we don't really know yours. I had the band for 14 months, never lost weight, developed GERD and was able to have my band removed and it was covered through my insurance. I was so disgusted with WLS at the time it was removed that I said I would not revise. Had it removed in October of 08 and during that time started putting even more weight on and got even more depressed until I decided to go ahead with revision to RNY still a bit unsure of the results even though my own daughter had it done less than a year after I was banded. I had to go through the same hoops to get the RNY and even more since I was revising so it wasn't easy. I also joined a support group prior to my RNY and found that to be helpful to me. Having a daughter who lives at home go through RNY with ups and downs and being there to take care of her during that time helped also as I knew what to expect and sometimes to expect the unexpected! I've actually done well with my revision and don't regret it a single bit. My daughter had what they call a minor complication with a stricture but they stretched her new stoma during two endoscopies. Removing the lap band was easy revising to RNY eight months later a bit more painful and the recovery is longer. I'm only post-op 10 weeks but have dropped over 50 lbs and I feel much better now. So I waited to revise and so in some ways it wasn't because I was afraid of RNY but afraid of failing at yet another WLS. Now I look at it as I chose the right procedure this time. So take care and it's normal to have second thoughts, Nancy.
