How much do you save on food?

I agree with butter. The Protein shakes, Vitamins, etc all add up. I think you'll spend less on eating out but it will be made up in special things like I mentioned. Plus your kids may not eat what you're eating. Say you make fish because it doesn't bother your sleeve and your kids don't like fish...our youngest decided to become vegetarian just as we started eating meat. Of course when we were vegetarians he wanted meat daily...can you tell he's a teenager? Sent from my iPhone using VST
  2. Hi, I'm trying to decide between sleeve and bypass, and I know the vitamin requirements are more stringent with bypass. Are the vitamins you need to take after bypass all available in chewable/liquid/small tablets, or do you have to take capsules or large tablets? I can't swallow capsules and struggle with larger tablets. Also, how common are vitamin deficiencies after bypass? If I've had B & D vitamin deficiencies before (I had a B12 deficiency when I was vegetarian that did not improve with supplements...had to start eating fish and eggs to correct it, and have to take at least 10,000 IU of Vitamin D daily to have normal levels), am I more likely to develop vitamin deficiencies if I get bypass? I'm afraid of the malabsorption if I may not respond as well to supplements...

    Vegetarians and Vegans

I've never struggled with my vegetarian diet. My single greatest struggle has been with evil sugar. I don't underatand how a meat diet could be more filling (or better in any way to be honest).

Dr. Atkins, pioneer of the ketogenic diet

and cardiomyopathy which started the ball rolling. It was caused by an infection over a decade before his death. Here's one for you. I had CLEAN arteries and normal heart and pretty perfect labs. Despite PCOS, I had managed to keep my pre-diabetes at the PRE level for over 10 years. Developed breast cancer. Had massive doses of chemo and left side radiation that gave a big dose to my breast bone. 5 years later I'm diagnosed with mild atherosclerotic plaques. Left atrial enlargement. Fluid around my heart. And a fibrous growth on my pericardium. So when I die are you gonna say that damned low carb Atkins diet she followed caused her heart problems? Or will you be more accurate and give the full HISTORICAL facts that in greater than 85% of women with left breast neoplasms who undergo chemotherapy and have left side chest radiation with mediastinal exposure suffer from CHF and CVD? Cuz it's the same analogy. The guy got a virus. His heart enlarged and was never the same after that. Our very healthy, thin, 40 year old friend got the same virus. He survived 9 years before he died waiting for a new heart. BTW, his BP was crazy bad too after his heart enlarged. He was btw, a vegetarian. John died less than 50 years old from heart failure. At the time of his death, he had plaques up the wazoo. But the reason for his CHF was cardiomyopathy, cardiomegaly brought about by viral infection.

    Your favorite banded breakfast.....

Though the nutritionist at my doc's office doesn't believe that you should force yourself to eat breakfast if you don't want it, I do eat it even though I'm not hungry per se in the morning. I eat it because if I don't, I always come in under 1000 cals for the day, and I need to stay above that because I have so much weight to lose. Also, i'm vegetarian and if I don't have 3 meals, I can't get in the 50+ g Protein my doc recommends for my height. So, I usually eat either (1) 80 cals of FF Total Yogurt with 1 c Kashi (total of 220 cals and 26 grams of protein, which always sets me up to meet my caloric/protein goals), (2) 1 morningstar veggie sausage patty (80 cals) or (3) 2 wedges of laughing cow cheese sandwiched between 2 pieces of Kavali crackers (140 cals). lunch is usually my biggest meal.
  6. Dont give up on the Protein -- we dont have a choice - its really necessary. Though I dont crave the foods that I used to love pre-op, I dont really dislike anything. I'm loving Veggies, all kinds of lentils, fish and chicken. I bet you'll find more food that your sleeve loves as you reach 3 months. That was when I was cleared for solid food, and I found that I loved fish. Pre-op, I was not too keen on non-vegetarian food. I just used to have eggs. Now, I eat fish atleast thrice a week. Hang in there, and take care of your body!!
  7. I know I'm not long term yet, but since I have had both a lap band and a bypass I feel qualified to answer. With the lap band I NEVER had that comfortable feeling of fullness. I always felt queasy rather than full and vomited often, depending how the first bite landed. I ALWAYS regurgitated meat of any kind, that's why I'm a vegetarian today. With the bypass I get that nice "whew, I'm full" with no feelings of queasiness, and I haven't vomited once since I got my bypass. I got my band a month before yours and it worked well for 5 years, but I also developed s slip, a hiatal hernia, and even with the fill pulled out I was vomiting up almost every other thing I ate. I don't miss it it all, and like elcee if I knew then what I know now I woulda gone straight to the bypass. Good luck!

    Vegetarian post op

My doctor did not have me on straight liquids right after post-op - I went straight to the pureed stage. For the first couple of weeks, I LIVED on blenderized lentil soup! My favorite is the one from Trader Joe's in the big can. All vegetarian, inexpensive, high protein, and DELICIOUS!! My surgeon is a huge fan of lentils post surgery - calls them one of nature's most perfect foods. He says that fish is the other perfect food. Not sure if you are lacto-ovo, vegan, or a pescetarian, but if fish figures into your plan at all, it is a great back-up protein once you get to soft foods. I also do non-fat vanilla greek yogurt, mixed with PB2 (powdered peanut butter). The combo packs a huge protein punch and is absolutely delicious! Cottage cheese is also great in the soft food phase.

    Confession Time

Yesterday was the closest thing to a pre-op day I've had since surgery. My son and I decided to spend the day together running around, and we left the house with me not even realizing that I hadn't had anything to drink other than two cups of coffee, and nothing at all to eat. Stopped by the health-food store and among the neat little things we picked up were a small container of their Kashi -- not the brand, but the salad-type thing with parsley, seeds, quinoa, soybeans... good stuff, but all vegetarian, so all carbs. Ate probably half a cup of that. Then made chili for dinner, ate a whole scoop so there were a lot of Beans, then later I had a date-roll coated in coconut... I think it was all fruit, there were no ingredients listed on the package, but THAT was all carbs! There was plenty of snacking on 'legal' stuff in between too. Just a munch, grazy, snacky day with too many carbs. And I JUST realized it was all a head hunger/bad habit thing. Didn't really realize that as it hasn't been an issue for me up til now. Damn.

    How Bout New Zealand

Hey there Ange, Just read your post. I agree that the Optifast was the most terrible 2 weeks of the whole process. With the Optifast I used to put frozen berries in my shake and blend them up together - either strawberries, raspberries or blueberries. That was the only fruit I used since that was all they told me to have. I did have the urge to chuck a banana in with the vanilla shake but decided I had better just do as I am told. I certainly missed the meat though - sure I would never make a vegetarian. But good luck with it, if you can do these two weeks you can do the whole process well.

To fill or not to fill?

Hi Nancy - Please forgive me that I do not remember you are a vegetarian (I doubt I ever will, so please do not become too exasperated with me! ) I am 100% with you on the calorie counting thing. I only use fitday to get real with myself. I do not, no way, no how, track everyday. I don't care to be focused on that either. I do have to disagree with you about though. Counting calories without the band does nothing for your hunger level, and would have been unlikely to give you any kind of long term success. Being banded manages that overwhelming drive to eat - the trick is to get your hunger level set at the proper place. Not so low that you're starving your body, even though you don't feel hungry, and not so high that you are consuming too much fuel to lose weight. That is the only reason I occasionally check in at fitday - just so I have a ballpark idea of what I'm consuming so I can judge if my plateaus are regular body resting periods or due to excessive caloric intake. I also am not one to lecture about liquid Protein calories. The volume required to stretch your pouch enough to give you the "full" feeling can be easily obtained with lo-cal veggies and tofu. There are lots of ways to manage your band journey successfully, and I think Protein shakes are a viable addition for many of us. Many bandsters do not agree, but if I am successful in what I'm doing I tend to tune out the naysayers, no matter how experienced they are. The "rules" are only a starting point, a place to touch base when we get into trouble to help give us insight and possible solutions. Aside from that, we all find the way that's best for us as individuals.
  12. I am banded two years ago and have lost nearly seven stone. until you start having fills, you won't get decent restriction that you can live with - everyone is different. my surgeon was Martin richardson, THG Bromsgrove. Had brilliant support and aftercare package, so would recommend him/it/them. I've recently had a problem following two long haul flights in two months, which meant my band got a bit sensitive to the de-fills and fills that I subjected it to. I've spent the last 3 months being sick a lot, which has resulted in low levels of albumin in my blood, which has shown as swollen feet and legs. I wasn't keeping enough Protein down to ensure my liver was able to manufacture the albumin apparently. I'm now on a high protein diet (I'm vegetarian, so takes a bit more thought) and my band seems to have settled down, so I've stopped being sick, don't know how long it will take for normal functioning to resume, but it will. also had some problems in the recent past with night cough, but that is fine now, as long as I don't eat too late. even though ive had a few problems, it has all been worth it, my general health and energy levels are so much better and I look good now too! one word of advice - take advice from the clinicians rather than going to other bandsters first - we're all on a journey and what works for them may not be the best advice for you. having said that, there is great support to be had from sites such as this one. good luck! karen

4 weeks out - what are you eating?

If you're past the healing stage, I'd skip the Soup and move on to solid foods. My typical day looks like this: Breakfast: scrambled eggs or small eggbeaters omelet with a little cheese and vegies or Kashi (protein fortified) oatmeal Lunch: deli meat, lettuce or spinach, grated carrots, a little lite mayo, and maybe a little cheese on a sandwich made of Mountain bread (a flatbread, thinner than a tortilla, that doesn't cause me problems) Dinner: salmon or other meat with cooked vegetables or Kashi Golean mixed with greek (high protein) yogurt and a little honey Snack if necessary: yogurt or an ounce of cheese or a piece of deli meat I figure it's good practice to mostly eat the solid Protein that will help me stay full when I reach ideal restriction, so I stay away from soup and Protein drinks and try to make more solid choices. You can make a small pizza using mini pita bread or a small tortilla as a crust, if that's what you want to eat :-) Pita, sauce, sauteed vegies, sausage or pepperoni (I use the vegetarian versions), an ounce of mozzarella. Yum :-) Maybe instead of thinking about a cup, think about 8 ounces? My nutritionist's suggestion was to try to stay within 4-6 oz per meal, with half of that made up of protein and the rest vegies and complex carbohydrates. Hope that helps - you've made great progress so far - congrats, and keep up the good work :-)

    What can I do?

Im always shocked when post-ops are eating fast food chili...I think "Are you guys nuts?? Recommending anything from a fast food restaurant!?!". Until I looked up the nutritional info online just now. A small chili has 220 calories, 7g fat, 22g carbs and 18g of protein. It could be way worse and I was surprised that those numbers weren't much higher! It's not an option for me because I'm vegetarian but.. I get why it's an option for some!
  15. I've tried my Protein shakes a ton of different ways. Lactaid worked very well for the last couple of weeks but as of yesterday I just can't do the Protein Shakes. I am almost gagging trying to get them in. I have tried half water/half milk. I have tried adding flavorings. It's just not working. I ordered some protein hot chocolate and a nectar sample pack yesterday but it won't get here for a while. I am really concerned about getting the protein down. I tried some scrambled eggs with a little cheese this morning and they were SO heavy in my tummy. I don't think I want to try again for a while. I had some of my mozzarella bake with a little bit of ground up hamburger. I officially do not like ground up hamburger. I may end up being a vegetarian before this is all done. I am feeling so discouraged today. I just want to CHEW something that doesn't make me want to hurl. I am on the verge of tears which I know is stupid.

    Too much food?

I think you might be able to eat the whole sub because it's a veggie sub. Are you a vegetarian? (I am). I am wondering if you could eat it all (plus bread) if it included meat protein (I'm guessing not). Your calories don't sound like they are excessive. You might do better having some solid protein for breakfast instead of the shake--it would get your metabolism going and keep you full longer. My dr doesn't like us to drink protein shakes once we are on solids bc the protein in them is more bioavailable so your body doesn't have to work as hard to process it--which makes you stay full for less time and contribute to losing more slowly.

    Are you vegetarian?

Congratulations on making a fantastic choice for your body, the animals and the planet! I work at being vegan all the time, but slip up and have dairy pretty often, too. I was wondering if I could do vegetarian or vegan post-surgery, and I'm glad to hear it's possible! Did you ever use Protein powder? If so, what kind? I know Vega is vegan, and if you get the natural flavour, it's not very sweet. I'm hoping it will work for me when I need it!

    Abdominal pain and excessive gas

Yes it definitely could be. I am a vegetarian but I do eat seafood. I have just never had it last for this many days. On Monday for lunch I had a hibachi grill with all veggies and shrimp. It started hurting around 7pm that night. Even yesterday it kept coming back( the bloat). I only had liquids on Tuesday and that may have made it worse. Only due to I was so nauseated. I'm going to try to eat normal today and see if it helps. That you for the link, I'm definitely going to read it and try to stay away from gassy foods.
  20. "A guy on this forum, who works here, says whey isolate is just fine. To make whey isolate, they denude the whey of much of its nutrition. AS the guy pointed out, Gibbons, I think is his name, the denuding process strips out fats but it is a mistake to think one can be healthy with no fat. There are good fats and our bodies need them. The Proteins in whole whey are good fats and good for you and you don't eat mass quantities of the stuff." I'm pretty sure that guy did not say or imply that "one can be healthy with no fat". I seem to recall that he indicated that fats, along with Protein and carbs, are all "macronutrients" meaning that they are all three required in relatively large quantities. Whey isolate is not a source of healthy fats. But I don't recall him suggesting that anyone should limit their diet exclusively to whey isolate. There are many sources for healthy fats. I believe that he indicated that whey isolate is an excellent source of highly digestible and exceptionally high protein content. Not familiar with the term "denuded" but protein can be "denatured" using either heat or acid. Whey isolate is produced by a filtering process (as the guy mentioned) and is not denatured. Denaturing actually changes the molecular structure of proteins effectively making them smaller in size. The result is that they pass very, very quickly through the walls of the intestine and into the bloodstream. Denatured proteins are sometimes the protein of choice for body builders but they are very expensive and seldom used or recommended for bariatric patients. As I recall, the guy that made that post indicated that he is not vegan or vegetarian but has friends and family that are and he has great respect for those who make that choice. I also think he favors organic, but does not exclude other options. And just for the record, that guy's name is DLCoggin but some folks just call him Dave. You're gonna love the new you!!

    Pre-op diet is a b***h

That sucks Are you a vegan, hence no chicken stock? There's so much sodium in those broths anyway. Vegetarian with multiple food/medicine allergies. Hence the reason I always read labels and write companies about ingredients. I can never trust catch all phrases like "natural flavorings". Most products are very good about clearly labeling things, but some are vague. Guess I'll just stick to low sodium vegetable broth and miso. That's a lot of extra planning added onto our already crazy busy Bypassed Lives. Totally worth it of course. I quite enjoy measuring out everything and adding it to MyFitnessPal. Makes me feel like I'm working my goal full force.
  22. *Blushes* I am actually a Vegetarian. Considering going Vegan. If I didn't eat veggies, I would starve to death. I actually lost weight quicker, and my muscle tone was better after going veggie. Maybe it was because I was more aware of what I was eating, and what I was putting into my body? I don't know. All I know is, this is the only body I have for this lifetime, and I have already damaged it to a degree I care not to think about, and if I can avoid any further damage, I will. Complicated answer to a simple question (Bowing theatrically, and exits stage left)
  23. Here are some sample menus from the past week (from low cal to high cal). I rarely eat exactly 1200 calories per day. I might do 800 calories one day and 1400 the next. But my weekly average is consistently 1200 per day. I rarely eat Breakfast, I never did prior to being banded and I’m just not hungry in the morning. I’m mostly vegetarian (I do eat fish, dairy and eggs). I might eat chicken breast or ground beef once a month. <o></o> 838 calories, 93 carbs, 34 fat, 25 Protein Breakfast: Small coffee, one cream, one sugar 113 calories Lunch: President’s Choice Indian vegetable biryani rice (0.8 serving), 200 calories Dinner: President’s Choice cheesy macaroni (1.25 cups) 425 calories Snack:<o></o>Orville Redenbacher's Smart Popcorn Mini-bags 100 calories<o></o> <o></o>1213 calories, 161 carbs, 39 fat, 68 protein<o></o> Breakfast:<o></o> Small coffee, one cream, one sugar 113 calories<o></o> Lunch: Slice of cheese pizza 345 calories Dinner: 2 cups of spaghetti with parmesan cheese (no meat) 595 calories Snack: Atkins Advantage Bar chocolate Mocha Crunch (0.9 serving) 198 calories<o></o><o> </o> 1620 calories, 141 carbs, 85 fat, 60 protein Breakfast: coffee with cream 90 calories Lunch: tuna wrap 500 calories (purchased at my work cafeteria) Dinner: President’s choice cheesy macaroni (2 cups) 600 calories Snack: cranberry muffin 350 calories <o></o> I live in <st1><st1:country-region w:st="on">Canada</st1:country-region></st1> so some of the brand names are different. I don’t have any problems health-wise except that I’m chronically anemic. <o></o> Looking at my menus I do see that I still eat a lot of Pasta, breads, and cheese, all of which I used to binge on prior to being banded. I used to be able to eat a WHOLE cheese pizza - now I can only eat 1 slice. I now eat much smaller quantities of these foods. I do recognize that my diet is short on fruits and vegetables (I really don’t like many – I know that’s ironic coming from a vegetarian). I usually have a cup of fresh strawberries 3 times a week and a salad about once a week. I'm still struggling to get to a good fill - I know I probably shouldn't even be able to even eat pizza and rice.
  24. Maybe a quality breakfast would help as well. There are lots of vegetarian breakfast options. I am a slow loser too and I can relate! The coffee for breakfast jumped out at me though. Good luck sweetie!
  25. I don't drink my calories with coffee, juice (etc), but I do take two Protein shakes per day. I'm not on a very low-calorie diet. I'm doing about 1000-1100 calories and 130 grams of carbs/day. Also, I have a cheat day once a week, when my caloric intake is about 1600-1800. My weight-loss within the last 4 months has sped up but is still slower than many bandsters (I'm losing about 2 pounds/week). I prefer not being on a strict diet regime. It keeps me from feeling deprived or counting the days until my diet is over. I'm a lacto-ovo vegetarian and I get in about 45 grams of protein through real food. I don't eat eggs or milk that often though. I take a scoop of Optimum Nutrition 100% whey two times a day with milk. This means that I get the extra protein from the powder and I am now consuming milk everyday, which I find beneficial. This usually brings my protein consumption to 95 grams a day. I could probably find ways to increase my protein without the Protein Shakes and without increasing my caloric intake (while being lacto-ovo veg), but I'm pretty lazy and I'm still within my caloric budget, so this works for me. By the way, if anyone's looking for a Protein shake, Opt. Nutrition (double chocolate, mocha cappuchino, or delicious strawberry) tastes pretty good and is low-carb (3 grams/scoop).
